WATCH: ‘Django Unchained’ Star Christoph Waltz Talks Tarantino And Working With Uggie

“I witnessed the genesis,” Christoph Waltz says of this season’s hot awards contender, Django Unchained .  ” Quentin [Tarantino] l et me have twenty-thirty pages as he finished them !” Looks like Waltz and Tarantino have become true creative partners.  But the actor, whose performance is one of the highlights of Django Unchained , would love to get even more involved. He lamented that he wasn’t able to be around for post-production when the film takes shape and “it really becomes interesting,” he said. In a one-on-one interview, I also asked him about foreign actors being stereotyped in Hollywood as villains, and he agreed that — as a good guy in Django Unchained — it always “feels good to break the cliche”.  Plus he spills a secret about working with Uggie , Tinseltown’s top pooch, on Water for Elephants . Websites Go Dark: Sandy Hook Moment of Silence Honors Victims, Calls For Action

Some major websites went dark briefly Friday in a “moment of silence” for the victims of last week’s shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. AOL, Yahoo, The Huffington Post, Digg, and more than 100,000 people and sites have pledged to participate in Causes (dot) com’s Web Goes Silent campaign. People and companies across the Internet were also spreading the word by tweeting their intention to go quiet Friday with the hashtag #momentforSandyHook. Silicon Valley venture capitalist Ron Conway promoted the online moment of silence, which is part of a larger campaign for federal gun control legislation . Conway is leading the Causes campaign along with other big names including Ryan Seacrest, Jack Dorsey, Britney Spears, MC Hammer and Suze Orman. Sites that participated in Friday’s moment of silence were invited to do so on their own, or to embed an official badge with a green ribbon on their sites. Sites using the code appeared grayed out, save for a white box reading “We are observing a National Moment of Silence for the victims of the Sandy Hook tragedy.” Conway joined other tech notables and celebrities to demand action for stronger gun control in a full-page ad in the Wednesday New York Times . The ad was run by Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a lobbying group of more than 700 U.S. mayors which began after the Aurora, Colorado, shootings in July. It was seen a surge in new support after Sandy Hook, although at the NRA press conference today, the group called for more armed security at schools. Time for more gun control regulations?   YES. Fewer guns, fewer tragedies! NO. It’s unconstitutional and won’t stop anything! View Poll »

Brooke Mueller Claims to be "Doing Excellent"

Following just six days in rehab , it looks like Brooke Mueller is on the road to recovery. According to Brooke Mueller, that is. Following an incident in which her assistant found her passed out, Charlie Sheen’s troubled ex-wife has texted Radar Online and said that she’s “doing excellent.” For the sake of the twins she shares with the actor, let’s all hope this remains the case. Sheen, however, isn’t confident. “Charlie fears for Brooke’s health and well being,” a Sheen source tells Radar. “Brooke is in absolute denial about her addiction to drugs. The disease is winning and Charlie feels powerless to do anything to stop Brooke from her downward spiral.” Sheen is busy these days with FX’s Anger Management , but the insider makes it clear: He “will do whatever is asked of him to help Brooke in any way that he can.” The star actually is one to toss money around if he thinks it could save those in need. Recent case in point: Sheen gave Lindsay Lohan $100,000. No, not for sex, people. Come on.

I’m so proud of our little engine that could. Thank you HFPA!” Emily Blunt, actress, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen (Best Actress – Comedy or Musical) “I’m so incredibly thankful to the Hollywood Foreign Press for recognizing our little movie that could. Ewan and the entire cast and crew could not be more deserving of this honor, and I’m thrilled that I’m able to share this moment among such a fantastic group of nominees.” Ben Affleck , director of Argo (Best Director, Best Motion Picture – Drama) “I want to thank the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for honoring Argo with five nominations. They honor more than 120 actors with speaking roles in multiple languages, thousands of extras in the US and abroad as well as hundreds of extraordinary crewmembers who poured their heart into the film — including the great Alan Arkin, brilliant Chris Terrio and extraordinary Alexandre Desplat, who were nominated today as well and who have my congratulations and gratitude. It’s especially flattering as we’ve seen the film from the beginning as a global story, one that involved and impacted much of the world. Congratulations to Kathryn Bigelow and Jessica Chastain on nominations much deserved.” Tim Burton, producer/director of Frankenweenie (Best Animated Feature Film) “I’m thrilled to be recognized by the HFPA. Frankenweenie is a very personal project for me and the nomination goes as much to the animators who labored frame by frame to bring this film to life.” Mark Andrews, director of Brave (Best Animated Feature Film) “The adventure of Brave began in Scotland, where the mystery and majesty of the land fueled our imaginations. From haggis to highland games, creating this film truly changed our fate. On behalf of everyone at Pixar, we would like to thank the Hollywood Foreign Press for the incredible honor of this nomination.” Graham Broadbent, producer, Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (Best Picture – Comedy or Musical) “ Marigold seems to be turning in to the ‘little film that could’. We’ve had a wonderful ride — it’s been hugely enjoyed by audiences around the world, and that’s really enough for any filmmaker. We couldn’t be happier that the HFPA and SAG are remembering our film, all our cast, and particularly our two ‘international treasures’ Dames, Judi and Maggie. Ol Parker’s script and John Madden’s vision made an experience in the cinemas that was both emotional, transforming and very funny, and reminded audiences of an important universal message, ‘there’s more life to live’ — whatever your age. We are so pleased with our passionate partners at Fox Searchlight and Participant for the care they’ve given our film.” Chris Terrio, screenwriter, Argo (Best Screenplay) “Having a screenplay produced for the first time is a tremendous gift for any writer. To see the script directed by Ben, with the brilliant cast and crew he assembled, and then honored by the HFPA, feels like winning the screenwriter lottery.” Alexandre Desplat, composer, Argo (Best Original Score – Motion Picture) “It is an honor to be nominated again by the HFPA. Writing the score for Argo was a rare experience and I wish to thank Ben Affleck, George Clooney, Grant Heslov and Chay Carter for taking me onboard their flight to Iran. I want to share my nomination with all the brilliant musicians from all over the world who performed on my score.” RELATED ARTICLES: Golden Globes Unveil 70th Edition Nominees Globes Analysis: Hooper, Russell, De Niro Snubbed & Is Waltz Really A Supporting Actor? Globes Analysis: Hooper, Russell, De Niro Snubbed & Is Waltz Really A Supporting Actor?

Early Thursday morning, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced its Golden Globe nominees , and, as you might expect, there were some surprises. Thanks to the Academy’s decision to unveil its Oscar nominations on Jan. 10, three days before Globe winners are revealed on Jan. 13, today’s nominations will have less bearing than usual on Oscar jockeying.  But don’t let anyone kid you.  Academy voters may have nothing in common with HFPA members, but they aren’t impervious to the media’s perception of who’s hot, cold or no longer in the running. With that in mind, here are a few preliminary observations about the nominations: The snubs:  Although both  Les Misérables     and Silver Linings Playbook  were nominated in the Best Musical or Comedy Picture category, those films’ directors, respectively, Tom Hooper and David O. Russell were conspicuously absent from the Best Directors category. Robert De Niro , who does his best work in years in Playbook was also not nominated. Beasts of The Southern Wild  was shut out entirely, although I doubt that will be the case with the Academy.  In some ways, the biggest surprise of all was the cold shoulder that Skyfall got despite its critical acclaim and spectacular overseas box-office success. Adele’s theme song, Skyfall , was the FHPA’s only nod to the film. Dame Judi Dench is among the nominees, but for her work in  The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel . We at Movieline are also extremely disappointed that Matthew McConaughey was not nominated for Magic Mike. The surprises:   Salmon Fishing in the Yemen which netted nominations for Best Film, Actor ( Ewan McGregor ) and Actress ( Emily Blunt ) in the Comedy or Musical category.  (The film may not have done Skyfall numbers, but it also performed surprisingly well at the box office.) Nicole Kidman’s Supporting Actress nomination for The Paperboy should at least get Academy voters to consider or reconsider her performance. Meanwhile,   Rachel Weisz’s performance in The Deep Blue Sea is turning in to the most honored acting role that nobody saw, but that could be about to change. The Head Scratcher:   I realize that the title of Quentin Tarantino’s movie is not Dr. King Schultz Unchained , but it’s a damn shame that Christoph Waltz’s  extraordinary performance as the bounty hunter who frees Django and helps him locate his wife, has been relegated to the Supporting Actor category. Although Daniel Day-Lewis is probably going to win the Best Actor, Drama category, I actually think Waltz would have had a better shot in that race because his performance and Django Unchained are both very different from the other entries. In the supporting actor category, he and co-star  Leonardo DiCaprio will inevitably cancel each other out. Technicalities and politics be damned, Waltz’s performance is as crucial to the movie as Jamie Foxx’s, and I say he got robbed here. Batman Cameo Rumors Bring Cheshire Smile To Christopher Nolan’s Face At Hugh Jackman Salute

Hugh Jackman is way more emo than I thought. But I’ll get to that in a moment.  Among the filmmakers who turned up to praise the  Les Misérables   star at the Museum of the Moving Image’s salute to Jackman in lower Manhattan on Tuesday night was The Dark Knight Rises director Christopher Nolan who grew an enormous Cheshire-Cat grin when I asked him if the Superman reboot he is producing, Man of Steel , would see a cameo by Joseph Gordon-Levitt , or any actor, as Batman, and if he had any objections to a cameo as a continuity move to tie the Supes movie to the 2015  Justice League movie.   “I can’t talk about that.  You know that,” Nolan said cheerily. I didn’t know that, actually, but now that I do, I feel compelled to point out that, despite the frustratingly inconclusive nature of his answer, it’s not a ‘No.’  Yes, JG-L’s camp shot down the speculation as “entirely false” back in November, but if the idea had been ruled out, wouldn’t Nolan be saying something along those lines, too, so that the fan boys could move on? You know how angry they can get when their casting hopes and dreams are suddenly deflated after being allowed to build for months. The impish smile on Nolan’s face as he issued that no comment also heightened my optimism, especially in the wake of the powerful Man of Steel trailer that’s now burning up the Internet. Zack Snyder’s take on Superman clearly aspires to have the kind of psychological heft and dark undertones that made The Dark Knight trilogy so satisfying. If the movie attains or even approaches those standards, a JG-L Batman cameo  would not dishonor Nolan’s work and it would set the bar high for Justice League . No pressure, Warner Bros. Nolan, Hathaway, Weisz Honor Jackman At Museum of The Moving Image Fete Getting back to Jackman, who’s on the fast-track to a Best Actor Oscar nomination , Nolan had much more to say about  the actor, who he directed along with Christian Bale in The Prestige .  The filmmaker told guests at the Museum of the Moving Image fete that though “ruthless” is not a word usually associated with Jackman, The Wolverine star is indeed “ruthless creatively” and a performer “driven by intense ambition.”  The director also said that he looked forward to working with Jackman again, “probably not on a musical though,” despite Jackman’s urging him to direct one. Also praising Jackman were his wife, actress Deborra-Lee Furness, his  X-Men Origins: Wolverine co-star Liev Schreiber , director Mike Nichols, former Saturday Night Live cast member Rachel Dratch , who got big laughs mocking Jackman’s Australian dialect and  two of his Les Misérables  co-stars Anne Hathaway and Eddie Redmayne . In an effusive, rambling speech, Hathaway called Jackman “deep as the sea.” Rachel Weisz offered up an even more intriguing description of the actor, calling him an “incredible cocktail of light and dark.”  She also told the most revealing story of the night:  During the filming of The Fountain , which was directed by her ex-husband Darren Aronofsky , Weisz said that Jackman gave himself so completely to a scene in which his character realizes he’s going to die that “he sobbed for about half an hour after the cameras stopped” while Weisz comforted him.  “He’d gone to the deepest, darkest place a person can go,” she said. “And he wasn’t faking it.” Jackman kept his speech much lighter saying that his Christmas gift wish list was a simple one.   All he wanted, he said, was “a movie with me starring in it to open on Christmas Day.” Follow Frank DiGiacomo on Twitter.
