Cannes: Brad Pitt Talks Killing Them Softly, Politics, Violence and Marriage

Politics lurched to the forefront Tuesday in Cannes as director Andrew Dominik’s Killing Them Softly took its turn as the spotlighted world premiere here. But this isn’t just any world premiere: This one featured Brad Pitt, who manages to still excite even some otherwise jaded festival attendees. Mobs climbed over each other as the actor entered and exited the morning press conference for his new film about a group of criminals and mobsters vying for self-interest. One can only choose which bad guy to root for. Based on George V. Higgins’ ’70s-era novel Cogan’s Trade , Dominik adapted the story, setting his mob-infused drama against the backdrop of the economic crisis and the election of President Obama in 2008. “What I liked about the book was that it had great characters,” said Dominik, who previously directed Pitt in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford in 2007. “But when I was adapting it, I realized it was a book about economic crisis. I always feel crime films are about capitalism. All the characters are motivated by money only, and I realized also that people in America are concerned about money – and people in Hollywood are motivated by that… I was.” Brad Pitt plays Cogan, a pragmatic hit man whose job is to whack armed robbers who held up a gambling session packed with mobsters. Frankie (Scoot McNairy) and Johnny (Vincent Curatola) pull off the heist in a dingy back room brimming with scowling gangsters. Though a messy job, they manage to take off with the loot, humiliating their otherwise intimidating victims. “[While] reading this story, I realized it is a commentary on the times now, the foreclosure debacle and the economic crisis,” said Pitt, who also serves as a producer on the film. “It wasn’t until the end of the story that I saw it was in fact a microcosm of what’s happening now as a [manifestation] of the macro world.” As with John Hillcoat’s Lawless , which premiered here Saturday, the use of violence – and there certainly is a good amount of it in Killing Them Softly – became a momentary hot topic in the packed press conference with both Dominik and Pitt defending it as necessary and a reflection of society generally. “I don’t understand the obsession with violence,” Dominik said. “It’s like people who don’t want to show children fairy tales. But fairy tales dramatize children’s concerns and emotions.” Added Pitt: “Violence is an accepted part of the gangster world. It’s an accepted possibility when dealing in crime. I’d have a much harder problem playing a racist for instance than, say, shooting someone right in the face.” Continuing, Pitt related violence to everyday life and perhaps inadvertently ushered in 10 minutes of conversation about politics and even his personal life — some of which is bound to generate standalone headlines including rumors about his marriage, how he is likely to vote and even gay marriage. “We live in such a violent world,” he said. “I grew up hunting. If you have a hamburger… Have you seen how they butcher a cow? It’s so violent, it’s morbid. It’s part of the everyday. So violence has a place in film. I don’t see a world without it.” Pitt’s character in the film, which drew early mixed reactions here today, is centered on self-interest. He doesn’t particularly crave violence, but uses it as a means to an end. He’s not bloodthirsty nor does he particularly find murder palatable, but he’s willing to do it as painlessly as possible in order to get ahead. “It’s a metaphor for business — it’s cutthroat but has to be done,” he said. “I’d love someone to develop a documentary about what makes a Democrat or a Republican,” Pitt added. “How do people vote against their own self-interest? I lean Democrat and to the left, but I am interested in how all people think.” At one point, the conversation meandered way off the Killing Them Softly script and the titillating subject of Pitt’s pending marriage to Angelina Jolie came out. He said there is no truth to the rumors that they’ve set a date, but a wedding is in the future, but added, “I’m still hoping we’ll figure out the marriage equality situation in the States before that happens.” Pitt had said some years ago he and Jolie would marry once gays were allowed to be married. He also said they’d “love to do a movie together again sometime.” Despite the film’s not-so-subtle metaphors about the economic crisis and President Obama’s election, Dominik and Pitt said its planned Stateside rollout this September had nothing to do with the pending fall presidential campaign in the US. Pitt did, however, take a jab at the financial fallout that began in ’08 — as well as those responsible: “The economic crisis was criminal, by the way, and there have been no repercussions from that criminality.” Read more of Movieline’s Cannes 2012 coverage here .

Nick Stahl Enters Rehab

After going missing, ‘Terminator’ actor Nick Stahl’s wife says he’s in a rehab facility. By Gil Kaufman Nick Stahl Photo: Stephen Lovekin/Getty Images After reportedly going missing
for several weeks, “Terminator: Rise of the Machines” actor Nick Stahl has reportedly entered a rehabilitation facility. TMZ reported that Stahl, 32, told his estranged wife, Rose, that he has checked into a facility. The actor e-mailed friends over the weekend to tell them that he was doing fine and would be unreachable for the next 30 days while he was getting help. Rose told the site that she spoke to Stahl on Saturday night and that she double-checked with the facility to make sure that he was still there. She had filed a missing person’s report with the Los Angeles Police Department last week after saying that she had not seen Stahl since May 9. Sources claimed that the actor had been seen in the Skid Row area of downtown L.A. and there were concerns that he was once again struggling with addiction. This latest incident was not the first time that those close to Stahl have expressed concern over his well-being. Rose filed papers with the LA County Superior Court back in February asking a judge to limit her husband’s access to their 2-year-old daughter, Marlo, due to his alleged drug and alcohol abuse. She also claimed that she and Stahl were no longer living together. Stahl made his big-screen debut back in 1993 opposite Mel Gibson in “The Man Without a Face.” Since then, he’s appeared in several major studio films, including “The Thin Red Line,” “Disturbing Behavior” and “Sin City.” His most recent role is in the 2011 VOD-released “388 Arletta Avenue” opposite Devon Sawa.

Some Sunday John Travolta Perverted Swirl: Meet Masseur Number 2 “John Truesdale”

Via NYDailyNews: The Daily News tracked down one of John Travolta’s first accusers, revealing him as a hulking 250-pound masseur and certified black belt who works at a posh spa in Atlanta. John Truesdale — formerly known only as John Doe No. 2 — sued the “Welcome Back, Kotter” star for sexual battery only to withdraw the case on Thursday. He was nameless and faceless until the Daily News found him this week. “I thought I was supposed to be anonymous,” the mild-mannered massage therapist said, as he posed for a photo. Truesdale, 40, confirmed he works in the spa at the posh Mandarin Oriental in Atlanta but declined to discuss claims that Travolta sexually accosted him in a hotel suite on the 15th floor in January. At that time the swanky hotel was called the Mansion on Peachtree. “The paparazzi are here for me?” he asked, breaking out in laughter. “I can’t believe it.” Truesdale dropped the suit and his original lawyer, Okorie Okorocha. He’s now represented by Gloria Allred, a move that set off fireworks between the two lawyers. A beefy 6-footer with massive arms, Truesdale is soft-spoken and has a calm demeanor. He’s a certified nail technician, a licensed massage therapist and a married dad. He filed a bombshell $2 million federal lawsuit on May 8, claiming in graphic detail that the “Pulp Fiction” star had “bloodshot eyes” and a “strange” disposition as he stripped naked and started to “hump” a massage table set up in his private suite on Jan. 28. Truesdale accused Travolta of “spreading his butt cheeks.” Then the actor asked for an odd amount of work on his butt muscles, he charged. He said Travolta groped his upper thighs and grabbed between his legs, according to the lawsuit originally filed by Okorocha. The Atlanta man said the Oscar nominee started pleasuring himself with about 15 minutes left in the session and “forcibly” hugged him as he tried to flee. “I can’t talk about (the case),” said Truesdale, a former high school football player and onetime U.S. Army medic. “I’m not allowed to give any comment.” SMH at John Travolta.. ‘Battleship’ Vs. ‘What To Expect’: Brooklyn Decker’s Double Feature

With model-turned-actress in two movies opening the same day, we look back at (and forward to) other stars’ box-office twofers. By Amy Wilkinson Brooklyn Decker in “Battleship” Photo: Universal Pictures If you have a thing for busty blondes, we suggest you pencil a double feature into your weekend plans, seeing as model-turned-actress Brooklyn Decker stars in not one, but two movies opening Friday: the blow-’em-up action flick ” Battleship ” and the pregnancy rom-com ” What to Expect When You’re Expecting .” In the Decker vs. Decker showdown, box-office analysts seem to agree that “Battleship” will sink “What to Expect,” though it’s unlikely either will unseat reigning superheroes of the cinema, “The Avengers,” who are eyeing their third first-place weekend. Nonetheless, having two films open on a single day is a neat distinction for the 25-year-old actress, though one that’s not as rare as you might think. Here are a cluster of stars who have pulled theatrical double-duty (or are set to): James Franco Nowadays, you can’t shake a stick at pop culture without James Franco fetching it, but back in the early aughts — following the cancellation of the beloved “Freaks and Geeks” — Franco wasn’t nearly so ubiquitous. Yet he still managed to star in two films opening May 3, 2002: “Spider-Man” and “Deuces Wild.” We probably don’t need to tell you which one snagged all the dollars at the box office that weekend. Christian Kane Big-name stars aren’t the only ones holding a pair. You may recognize Christian Kane from the TNT heist series “Leverage,” or you may know him from a duo of 2004 film roles. On October 8 of that year, he appeared in the film version of “Friday Night Lights” and the Queen Latifah/ Jimmy Fallon comedy “Taxi.” Dakota Fanning No one saw Dakota Fanning in two films opening February 6, 2009, technically speaking, but that’s only because one was animated. The pint-size actress flexed her supernatural skills in the action flick “Push,” while letting her vocals do all the work as the titular heroine of “Coraline.” David Koechner Another actor dabbling in both animation and live-action on a single release date is David Koechner. The “Anchorman” actor hit the pit crew in Will Ferrell’s “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby” and channeled his inner-animal as the voice of a coyote in the animated “Barnyard,” all on August 4, 2006. Samuel L. Jackson The most recent two-for-one special comes courtesy of the prolific Samuel L. Jackson, whose “Avengers” continues to hammer the competition. But did you know his crime drama “Meeting Evil” (based on the novel by Thomas Berger) also opened May 4? Yeah, we didn’t think so. Channing Tatum Maybe it’s a sign of the apocalypse (or, at the very least, a trend) that four actors had or will have two movies opening on the same day in 2012. Like Decker, Tatum is hitting nearly every demographic with his titillating twofer. On June 29, the 32-year-old will suit up as Duke for “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” and strip down as an exotic dancer for “Magic Mike.” Leonardo DiCaprio Leonardo DiCaprio’s Christmas present to America this year is himself. Twice over. The actor stars in two films opening December 25: “The Great Gatsby” and “Django Unchained.” Which one will egg-nog-fueled audiences choose to unwrap? Only Santa knows for sure. John Travolta Lawsuit Dropped By Second Masseur

Just two days after John Travolta’s first accuser filed papers to dismiss his sexual battery lawsuit against the actor, the second accuser has followed suit. The second accuser, also a male masseur, just fired his lawyer and will reportedly file new papers in an effort to dismiss the lawsuit in the near future. The second accuser had claimed Travolta assaulted him on January 28 at an Atlanta spa resort. Travolta allegedly grabbed the masseur’s penis, etc. It’s the last remaining lawsuit against Travolta, as both the third accuser (Fabian Zanzi) and the fourth accuser who came forward today have not filed. The first accuser, who had claimed a similar junk-grabbing incident occurred on January 16 at the Beverly Hills Hotel, dropped his lawsuit on Tuesday. Attorney Okorie Okorocha, who repped both accusers, claims he doesn’t know why his second client called it quits , but both have hired Gloria Allred . John Travolta is quick to deny reports that he paid off the men. His lawyer, Marty Singer, says, “Not one penny has been paid nor do we have any intention to pay any money for these ridiculous and false claims.” [Photo: WENN.com]

‘Terminator’ Actor Nick Stahl Reported Missing

Star of ‘Terminator: Rise of the Machines’ has not been heard from since May 9, his wife told L.A. officials. By Kara Warner Nick Stahl Photo: Barry King/FilmMagic “Terminator: Rise of the Machines” actor Nick Stahl has been reported missing. Los Angeles law enforcement officials confirmed to TMZ that Stahl’s wife, Rose Murphy, reported her husband missing on Monday, saying that the last time she saw the 32-year-old was on May 9. Sources told the website that Stahl had been displaying some erratic behavior recently and was allegedly spending time in the Skid Row area of Los Angeles. The source also expressed concern that the actor might have become involved in some questionable activities. This is not the first time, however, that those close to the actor have expressed concern over his well-being. Stahl’s wife filed papers with the LA County Superior Court back in February asking a judge to limit her husband’s access to their 2-year-old daughter Marlo due to his alleged drug and alcohol abuse. She also claimed that she and Stahl were no longer living together. There has been no word from Stahl’s reps regarding his whereabouts, but Stahl’s wife has been relatively active on her Twitter account, posting a general thank you for support early Wednesday (May 16). “Thank you for kind words,” she tweeted. Thank you for kind words.. — Rose Murphy Stahl (@TheMrsStahl) May 16, 2012 A quick look at Stahl’s Twitter account shows that the actor has been inactive since May 1, but that he and Murphy might have been working through their problems since the actor tweeted on April 26 that they were not actually separated. Not sure where it got started but @ TheMrsStahl and I are not separated. Far from it — Nick Stahl (@TheNickStahl) April 26, 2012 “Not sure where it got started but @TheMrsStahl and I are not separated. Far from it,” he wrote. John Travolta’s First Accuser Drops Lawsuit

Actor’s lawyer says he’s been ‘completely vindicated.’ By Gil Kaufman John Travolta Photo: Ryan Pierse/Getty Images The first of the two anonymous massage therapists who filed a sexual battery lawsuit
against John Travolta has withdrawn his legal action. According to CNN , Okorie Okarocha, the lawyer representing a client known as John Doe #1, filed papers on Tuesday to drop the client after he discovered that the masseur had misstated the date on which he alleged the incident with Travolta took place at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Travolta’s lawyer, Martin Singer, said the withdrawal means the actor has been “completely vindicated” and added that, “we fully expect that my client will similarly be vindicated with respect to Doe #2, as well as with respect to any other person who makes meritless claims against John Travolta.” Despite Singer’s claims, Okarocha he stood behind the second unnamed plaintiff, who claimed Travolta groped him during a massage in an Atlanta hotel last January. “I can guarantee that John Doe #2 has a truckload of witnesses to back up what he’s saying,” he said. Okarocha said the second therapist’s claims are reportedly backed up by a series of e-mails in which he complains to his supervisors about Travolta’s advances. Reacting to that comment, Singer said the documents he’s seen online purporting to be one of those e-mails, “significantly does not refer to my client at all, nor does it make any mention whatsoever of any of the things outrageously alleged in Doe #2’s lawsuit … Instead, Doe #2 voiced complaints about his co-workers gossiping and being insubordinate.” The fact that the e-mail doesn’t once mention Travolta’s name, “says it all,” according to Singer. “Nothing that is alleged in Doe #2’s lawsuit was mentioned in the e-mail he sent to his bosses, making his claims even more unbelievable … The allegations in ‘Doe #2’s’ lawsuit are unraveling, just like ‘Doe #1’s’ ridiculous allegations, which were proven false and impossible,” he said. Okarocha appeared confident in his case, though, vowing to “mop up” in the courtroom with the witnesses and documents in the case against Travolta. “I think I can show a custom, habit and practice,” Okarocha said, referring to his claims that the actor has sexually assaulted dozens of other massage therapists over the years. “If I bring in 100 people that don’t have an ax to grind, don’t want any money, they’re in 50 different states, they don’t know each other, they’re all massage therapists, they all have dates, they’re at different spa resorts and they say this exact same thing happened, it’s pretty hard to refute.” Unlike the first accuser, Okarocha vowed that his client, “ain’t going nowhere,” and is looking forward to a trial. Travolta, 58, has been married to actress Kelly Preston for 20 years and has repeatedly denied whisper campaigns about his sexuality. Before dropping the first accuser, Okarocha apologized on Friday for putting the wrong date of the John Doe #1 incident in the lawsuit, which his client initially told him occurred on January 16, 2012. Singer was able to produce a restaurant receipt and a time-stamped photo that showed Travolta was in New York, not Los Angeles, on that date. Rather than amend the lawsuit, Okarocha decided to withdraw the allegation from the suit and drop John Doe #1 to avoid hurting the chances of the second plaintiff’s suit. Radar Online reported that John Doe #1 has hired famed L.A. attorney Gloria Allred to represent him. “I represent John Doe #1. Mr. Doe’s lawsuit was dismissed without prejudice which means that he is still legally entitled to file another lawsuit against John Travolta if he chooses,” said Allred. “We are in the process of conferring with him regarding the next steps, which he may wish to take. Our client and our firm has no further comment at this time.”

John Travolta Accuser #1 Drops Sexual Battery Lawsuit

Score one for John Travolta. The first of three sexual battery accusers has moved to dismiss his own lawsuit against the movie legend. The anonymous masseur did not give a reason. E! News has obtained the notice of dismissal , which was filed today in U.S. District Court. So the actor is officially in the clear … with this guy at least. John Travolta’s accuser set off a firestorm last week, but drew criticism early on both for his extremely graphic lawsuit and for contradicting his story. While the man claimed sexual assault at the hands of the actor which took place on January 16, Travolta’s flight records quickly torpedoed his credibility. It’s not all clear skies ahead for Travolta, however. Although attorney Okorie Okorocha has dismissed the original accuser as a client, the legal filing makes no mention of the second John Doe masseur , whom Okorocha will presumably continue to represent in his case. He is seeking $2 million for the actor’s behavior during a similar massage gone awry. Travolta, through his attorney, has vehemently denied the accusations. A third man, Fabian Zanzi , alleges similar conduct aboard a cruise ship. [Photo: WENN.com]
