One Direction Prove Themselves During ‘SNL’ Debut

The boys also show off acting chops during ‘Manuel Ortiz Show’ sketch. By James Dinh One Direction performs on SNL Photo: NBC It’s usually the more seasoned artists that take to the “Saturday Night Live” stage as musical guests, but this season of the late-night NBC show has welcomed newer acts to provide entertainment mid-laughs. Back in January, Lana Del Rey raised eyebrows for delivering a pair of performances that didn’t sit right with critics. And on Saturday night, it was One Direction, who continued their Stateside domination with some smooth performances on the Sofia Vergara-hosted episode of “SNL.” Beginning with their mega-smash “What Makes You Beautiful,” One Direction worked each side of the Studio 8H stage. Dressed in blazers, vests and cardigans, Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan crooned the feel-good track while showing off their boyish charm. When the boys reappeared later on for a performance of their song “One Thing,” they came with a bit more playfulness. As one of the groups behind the recent boy-band resurgence, the guys proved they have more than enough talent, teenage allure and overall packaging to keep them on the charts. 1D also got into the acting action when they made a brief appearance on “The Manuel Ortiz Show” skit. With the help of some wigs and mustaches, the British pop band acted as Spanish children of a rather dysfunctional family. And like all guests on Manuel’s show, the singers strutted onto the stage doing the skit’s signature dance. One Directioners got a double-dose of acting from the boys when they made their national television acting debut on Nickelodeon’s “iCarly” earlier in the evening. MTV News recently caught up with some of the show’s actors, who had nothing but positive things to say about the British music sensations. While iCarly herself, Miranda Cosgrove, found the bandmates “really funny,” another castmate, Nathan Krauss, admitted his initial uncertainty in regards to their acting chops. “Having One Direction on set was really cool. We didn’t really know what to expect from them, because we had heard that they didn’t really have any acting experience because they have a lot of lines and are almost in every scene,” the actor explains. “But we were all very pleasantly surprised. They did very, very well, especially Harry, because he had to pretend to be sick the whole time.” What did you think of One Direction’s “SNL” set? Tell us below! Jason Biggs Goes Full Frontal In ‘American Reunion’

Cast talks to MTV News about seeing everything in the fourth theatrical flick of the ‘American Pie’ series. By Ryan J. Downey Jason Biggs in “American Reunion” Photo: Universal Pictures Jason Biggs famously humped a dessert in what became the most memorable scene in “American Pie.” Now, more than a dozen years later, an older (but obviously not much wiser) Jim Levenstein ups the ante in “American Reunion” by going full-frontal in that very same kitchen. “My penis — the nerve, you ready? — went and got an agent after the first test screening of the movie,” the actor joked with MTV News while doing press for the fourth theatrical “American Pie” flick, on which he served as a co-executive producer in addition to reprising the role that made him famous. “It tested through the roof, my penis did. It was the highest-scoring character in the movie. It scored a 97, which — I don’t know if you’ve been to these things — is amazing. It went and got an agent, signed with [Creative Artists Agency]. I’m not even with CAA.” “American Reunion,” as the name implies, reunites the cast from the raunchy but warm-hearted teen comedy series that began with “American Pie” in 1999. “American Pie 2,” “American Wedding” and a handful of direct-to-DVD “American Pie Presents” movies followed. In “Reunion,” the gang gets back together in their old town. Jim is still married to “band camp” gal Michelle (Alyson Hannigan). Now raising a young son, the couple is going through some difficulties adjusting to adulthood. After a night out with Stifler (Seann William Scott), Finch (Eddie Kay Thomas) and the rest of the boys, Jim awakens in his old kitchen stark naked. Michelle and Selena (Dania Ramirez) burst in on him unexpectedly and they see everything. So will audiences when the film opens on Friday. “If they didn’t show Jason Biggs’ penis [in ‘American Reunion’], I was out,” joked Scott, who also served as a co-executive producer. “Or John Cho’s mustache,” added Thomas. “I needed both of those things in big bold letters at the top of the contract. Neither are on the poster, which is weird.” Biggs is aware that the risky full-frontal scene puts “Reunion” in the same category as last year’s critically acclaimed drama “Shame,” which generated quite a bit of buzz thanks in part to Michael Fassbender’s similar bravery. “‘Boogie Nights,’ ‘Shame’ — those are [my penis’] competition. It’s an elite group of penises out there right now,” Biggs said, smiling widely. “The thing is, he’s got a lock on the comedy. Well, that’s not true, because of [Jason] Segel [in ‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall’]. Really, it’s those two penises that are in the hunt for all of the sort of primo comedy penis roles.” “How I Met Your Mother” star Hannigan had some thoughts of her own about Biggs’ career aspirations. “It’s weird that [your penis] so desperately wants to be an actor,” she weighed in. “I always thought he would be such a great director since he’s always telling you what to do.” Biggs laughed loudly, conceding, “Ahhh, well done!” Thomas and Scott agreed that the latest chapter, which was written and directed by the “Harold & Kumar” duo of Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, carries on a tradition of authenticity. “The whole movie kind of comes from that honest place. It’s not like, ‘Oh, let’s show some boobs,’ ‘Oh God, I’m terrified I’m going to be a virgin for the rest of my life.’ And ‘Oh, my god, it’s really scary that we’re 30 all of a sudden and we’re at our high school reunion,’ ” Thomas said. “I think Jon and Hayden wrote a script that came from an honest place,” he added. “That’s what got us all onboard for this one.” Check out everything we’ve got on “American Reunion.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . ‘Hunger Games’ Star Josh Hutcherson: What’s Next?

Post-Peeta, the actor has a horror/comedy film and ‘Red Dawn’ on the horizon. By Kara Warner Josh Hutcherson in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate Those of you who’ve seen “The Hunger Games” will more than likely agree with our sentiment that there are a number of things to love about the weekend’s box-office dominator . The film’s success is first and foremost due to author Suzanne Collins’ brilliance, followed by director Gary Ross’ sleek and stylish take on the adaptation and, of course, the performances of the very talented cast. One of those standout performances is Josh Hutcherson’s portrayal of loyal and lovable boy with the bread Peeta Mellark. He’s so good in the film we just can’t wait to see what he does with the character’s arc in “Catching Fire.” Unfortunately, we have to wait about 20 months until that happens, so in the meantime, here’s a look at where and when you can see more of Hutcherson’s work on the big screen. First up is the R-rated teen horror/comedy film “Detention,” which hits select theaters April 13. In the uniquely twisted and slightly outrageous film, Hutcherson plays Clapton Davis, a student of Grizzly Lake High School just trying to make it through the school year when slasher-movie killer Cinderhella descends on the school and goes on a killing spree. “Detention” played at last year’s South by Southwest film festival and received many surprised-but-delighted reactions . It also stars Dane Cook, Shanley Caswell and Spencer Locke. After watching a different side of Hutcherson’s skills in “Detention,” look for the coming-of-age drama “Carmel,” in which Hutcherson plays an artistically gifted teenager who is abandoned by his drug-addicted mother and ends up in the small seaside town of Carmel, California, where he is introduced to the art-forgery community. Hayden Panettiere and Alfred Molina also star. According to the film’s Facebook page, the release date for the film will be sometime in June, to be timed with the DVD/Blu-ray releases of “Hunger Games” and “Journey 2.” In November, we’ll get to see more of Hutcherson’s action-movie skills in the remake of the 1984 film “Red Dawn,” the release of which has been long-delayed due to the studio’s financial troubles. The story revolves around a group of teenagers who resist the occupation/invasion of a foreign army in their town. Hutcherson stars alongside Chris Hemsworth, Josh Peck, Adrianne Palicki and Isabel Lucas. After “Red Dawn” comes out, we very likely won’t see Hutcherson on the big screen again until next year, when “Catching Fire” is released November 22, 2013. Brian Austin Green Sued by Photographer for Assault

You’re not alone, Rob Kardashian. The day after that reality star got in trouble for messing with a member of the paparazzi, TMZ reports that Brian Austin Green is about to face a lawsuit due to his alleged actions against one of these parasites in December. Delbert Shaw will claim in court papers he’s filing today that he was snapping pictures of the couple in Hawaii last year when Fox said to her man: Are you going to let him get away with that? The taunt prompted Green, supposedly, to attack Shaw, resulting in injuries to the photographer and even his iPhone getting tossed into the ocean. He’s suing Green for unspecified damages and notes in the suit that Fox was egging the actor on throughout the assault. No word yet from anyone in Green or Fox’s camp.

The Running Man: Abel Ferrara on 4:44, Staying Busy and Bad Lieutenant at 20

I met Abel Ferrara in a café on Mulberry Street. In an hour’s time, he didn’t once take his seat. The filmmaker makes a couple of phone calls, goes to the bathroom twice, shows me the new Web series that he’s developing with Vice TV on, and points me to two different articles about his movies. Unkempt and energetic, the Bronx-born director of such New York notorieties as Ms. 45 , King of New York , Bad Lieutenant , The Funeral and this week’s 4:44 Last Day on Earth is exactly what you’d imagine he’d be like if he were one of his movie’s characters. In a way, he is. 4:44 features Willem Dafoe and Shanyn Leigh as a couple spending their last hours together before the world ends. They’re each in their own separate but related worlds: she paints and listens to Buddhist philosophy while he talks to friends via Skype and decides if he should end two years of sobriety by getting high one last time. The loose nature of 4:44 ’s scenario speaks to the Cassavetes-inspired, improv-oriented nature of Ferrara’s dramas, which are often collaborative processes between actor and filmmaker. This is especially characteristic of Ferrara’s working relationship with Dafoe. “If Willem wasn’t going to play it,” Ferrara told me, “I don’t think I would have wrote the script.” The film marks Ferrara and Dafoe’s third film together, coming after 1998’s New Rose Hotel and the 2007 ensemble piece Go Go Tales (which itself almost became a series on HBO). But more importantly, 4:44 further refines a working relationship that involves Dafoe co-creating not only his character, but also the scenes that, as Ferrara tells it, the actor is “comfortable with, that he believes in, that he understands.” “[We have] confidence with each other that comes from working together,” Ferrara continued. “I wrote the character so that the character I wrote is something he can play. And then, to create a stage for him, a place where he’s going to act, a set, which is a place that’s going to be conducive for him to do his best work. There’s nothing throwing him off…” Paradoxically or not, Ferrara then interrupted himself to perform one of a seemingly Herculean list of multi-tasks. Ultimately, performance is key to Ferrara’s movies because his characters are always performing for each other. They change in almost every scene they’re in, keeping the films that contain them endlessly revelatory, even shocking. Take Bad Lieutenant , which this year celebrates its 20th anniversary of Harvey Keitel’s searing work as a sex-, drug- and gambling-addicted cop seeking both vengeance and kicks as he pursues the men who sexually assaulted a nun. His detour into depravity culminates in an infamous scene where he pulls over two young women, making them simulate giving him oral sex while he masturbates. It’s the type of blunt-force intimacy that has preoccupied Ferrara all the way through 4:44 but arguably reached its flashpoint with the NC-17 Lieutenant . Two decades on, the 60-year-old director looks back on the controversy with similarly matter-of-fact zeal. “It had to be unrated,” he said. “It had to be rated X. It was the opposite: it couldn’t be rated R. We had to be what Hollywood couldn’t be. It was reverse censorship.” Not that he minds the continuing existence of an R-rated version necessitated by such once-powerful video chains as Blockbuster: “That’s just a joke; I’m not counting on anybody watching that.” The editing process is just another way Ferrara fulfills his all-encompassing role as director-cum-emcee. From early conception — “A script is not a piece of literature,” he explained, “it’s a process” — to post-production, Ferrara officiates over his films the way Ray Ruby, Dafoe’s hero from Go Go Tales , presides over his embattled burlesque dominion. He works with regular collaborators like cinematographer Ken Kelsch and production designer Frank DeCurtis to give his actors a proper setting. Then, led by their maestro, they all perform in front of and behind the camera together. But collaboration shouldn’t be mistaken for compromise, that ever-present threat to the natures of complex characters like Keitel’s Lieutenant and Dafoe’s Cisco and even to Ferrara’s singular vision itself. “There’s no such thing as a non-final cut director,” Ferrara said, R-rated Bad Lieutenant notwithstanding. “If you don’t have final cut, you’re not a director. There’s no point making a film. Citizen Kane is a masterpiece, but if I go into the editing room for three hours, I can change Citizen Kane .” Meanwhile, the endlessly moving Ferrara has more important projects than Citizen Kane to worry about: His own, including a planned take on the Dominique Strauss-Kahn case starring Gerard Depardieu — about which the filmmaker wishes to remain tight-lipped. “It takes six months to shoot a film,” he said. “We’re [always] perfecting what we’re doing.” Read Stephanie Zacharek’s review of 4:44 Last Day on Earth here .
