On Friday, co-producer Orian Williams shot down a report that Gossip Girl star Penn Badgley would play late singer Jeff Buckley in a biopic Buckley’s mother, Mary Guibert, has been planning for years. “Penn is not involved in the film at all,” Williams told the Los Angeles Times . And he’s still not! In that film. But Badgley has been cast as the iconic musician in Greetings from Tim Buckley .

‘Green Lantern’ Special-Effects Wiz Took ‘Artistic License’

Ryan Reynolds, director Martin Campbell and designer Neville Page explain creatures’ creation to MTV News. By Kara Warner Ryan Reynolds in “Green Lantern” Photo: Warner Bros. Nowadays, it seems moviegoers don’t see anything that isn’t at least partially CGI-enhanced — especially when talking about summer blockbusters and comic book movies. Not that we’re complaining. A movie like “Green Lantern,” which opened Friday (June 17), wouldn’t be possible without a heavy assist from computer-graphics specialists and visual-effects teams. When MTV News caught up with the film’s star, Ryan Reynolds, director Martin Campbell and creature designer Neville Page at the premiere this week, we asked them about the challenges involved in acting and working with so many non-existing environments. “I had pretty strong visual cues to work with,” Reynolds said. He explained that he was mostly working with actual people, actors who wore green-screen suits and were later replaced or enhanced with CGI in postproduction. Campbell said that although a lot of the time the actors were playing off “tennis balls on C-stands,” they all learned to work from nothing. “You’re sitting in a blue cave for god knows how long, and after a while, it’s fine,” he said. “You sort of adjust to it, you get used to it like anything else, it becomes the norm. Regarding the specifics of the film’s visual and CG-related feats, Page admitted that the alien characters, Tomar-Re and Kilowog (voiced by Geoffrey Rush and Michael Clarke Duncan), proved to be particularly difficult. “As soon as I saw the comic book design of it … I thought, ‘How are we gonna get a chicken guy to work realistically next to Ryan Reynolds and not have people laugh?’ ” Page said of designing Tomar-Re. “Kilowog was a similar character,” he added. “Obviously, we’re mindful — very mindful — of the fanbase and their expectation of what they are hoping to see,” he explained, mentioning details like body-part proportions and skin texture. “But at the same time, you have to take artistic license to bring these things to true, CG, cinematic life,” he said. Let’s Guess the Plot of the Ouija Board Movie!

About once a year we hear something new about the Ouija movie , which, as far as I can tell, is the first movie based on a “game” where there isn’t a winner. It’s not a game, actually. It’s cardboard. It’s a flattened cereal box with the decoder ring taped to the outside. Since you’re surely intrigued by this inanimate slab’s transformation into a “supernatural action-adventure movie” and the news that Mr. and Mrs. Smith scribe Simon Kinberg was hired to polish it, let’s take a couple of cracks at the plot.

Relativity to Release Soderbergh’s Haywire in January 2012

January isn’t exactly the time of year when you want your film to hit screens, but maybe Steven Soderbergh ‘s Haywire will defy the “dumping grounds” curse! After all, in addition to starring MMA fighter Gina Carano as a double-crossed covert ops specialist, it’s written by Lem Dobbs ( The Limey ) and has folks like Channing Tatum , Antonio Banderas , Michael Angarano , Ewan MacGregor , Michael Fassbender , and Michael Douglas filling out the cast. Mmm, Fassbender. Yup, we’re in. Relativity will release the film January 20, 2012. [Press release]

REVIEW: Page One Goes Inside the New York Times, But Also Beyond

A few weeks ago at the edge of one of the Brooklyn parks, I passed a guy at a table hawking New York Times home-delivery subscriptions. “Already got one,” I said. Like a Jehovah’s Witness crossed with a Doberman, he clamped down on me. “How many days?” he demanded, probably thinking I was one of those weenies who just gets the weekend package. “Seven,” I said. “I’m hardcore.” He didn’t laugh. He didn’t even look disappointed — maybe more disgusted than anything. Whatever his spiel was, he didn’t get a chance to deliver it, and he looked kind of lonely to boot: Either he’d been trying to preach to the converted all day, or he’d encountered too many devoted digital subscribers. Either way, I hope his lack of sign-ups was a good omen.

Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin Reportedly Set to Star in Jason Reitman’s Labor Day

Now that Jason Reitman has wrapped on Young Adult with Charlize Theron, he’s reportedly set to court another Oscar-winner, this time Kate Winslet, for his next project, Labor Day . The film — based on Joyce Maynard’s 2009 book about a single mother who takes in and falls in love with a possibly sinister stranger (to be played by Josh Brolin) — has the chance of being crazier than Winslet’s other recent film, Roman Polanski’s Carnage , where she screams at Jodie Foster, Christoph Waltz, and John C. Reilly for two hours. Mildred Pissed , more like! [ EW ]
