Oscar Nominee Natalie Portman Praises ‘Black Swan’ Director

Best Actress nominee says nod is ‘a wonderful culmination of the 10-year journey with Darren [Aronofsky].’ By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Kara Warner Natalie Portman in “Black Swan” Photo: Fox Searchlight For those who’ve been following the awards season, it’s not too big of a surprise that “Black Swan” earned five Oscar nominations including Best Picture, Best Actress (Natalie Portman), and Best Director (Darren Aronofsky). Portman had already won significant recognition for her role in the ballet thriller at the Golden Globes, the Independent Spirit Awards and 10 regional critics’ awards associations. So while her first Academy Award nomination may not have been unexpected, the actress says she’s humbled by the honor. “I am so honored and grateful to the Academy for this recognition. It is a wonderful culmination of the 10-year journey with Darren to make this film,” Portman told MTV News in a statement. “Making ‘Black Swan’ is already the most meaningful experience of my career, and the passion shown for the film has completed the process of communication between artists and audience. I am so thankful for the support we have received and I share this honor with the entire cast and crew of the film, especially Darren Aronofsky.” This is also Aronofsky’s first Oscar nomination. (His 2008 film “The Wrestler” earned Mickey Rourke the Best Actor award for his performance.) Aronofsky has always seemed to target a niche audience with films like “Pi,” “Requiem for a Dream” and “The Fountain,” so producer Brian Oliver said he was glad that Aronofsky was getting much-deserved recognition. “I’m really happy for Darren. Darren is a visionary filmmaker and it’s finally nice that they recognized him,” Oliver told MTV News. “It’s also interesting to see how well the movie is being received internationally and in Europe, with the 12 BAFTA nominations and the box-office success, so it’s another kudos to Darren, appealing to a wide audience outside a small niche.” With all of the recognition “Black Swan” has been receiving, it was a bit surprising that the film’s impressive range of supporting actresses — Mila Kunis, Winona Ryder and Barbara Hershey — didn’t get any nods. (Kunis was nominated for a Supporting Actress Golden Globe, though she didn’t win.) Oliver theorized that the actresses may have been overlooked because their performances didn’t get enough early praise. “As we saw the race went on, all of our supporting actresses’ names were moving up the list, and maybe the recognition started a little too late for Barbara but she definitely ended up being a contender. She did an amazing job. I think if we had another few weeks before nominations, she would have gotten it and maybe Mila as well,” the producer said. “Maybe the argument too is we split votes. I think a lot of people voted for Mila, a lot of people voted for Barbara, which is great, it’s another testament to Darren, but it probably split their chances.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Black Swan.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . ‘The King’s Speech’ Actors, Director Overjoyed By Oscar Nods

‘Not used to this much joy, or this much champagne at this hour,’ best-actor nominee Colin Firth said in a statement. By Jocelyn Vena Colin Firth in “The Kings Speech” Photo: The Weinstein Company “The King’s Speech” leads all films with 12 nominations for next month’s 83rd Academy Awards . The Tom Hooper-directed flick scored Oscar nods for Best Picture, Actor in a Leading Role, Actor in a Supporting Role and Actress in a Supporting Role, to name a few. The movie’s lead actor, Colin Firth, expressed his excitement over his nod in a statement to MTV News. “Currently celebrating with my colleagues three feet above the ground,” said Firth, who also received a best-actor nomination last year for “A Single Man.” “Not used to this much joy, or this much champagne at this hour.” Firth also spoke to the “Today” show shortly after the nominations were announced early Tuesday morning (January 25). “It seems like I was fired out of a cannon this time last year,” Firth said about his Actor in a Leading Role nod. “And now it’s like I’m orbiting Pluto.” His co-star Geoffrey Rush opened up about his Actor in a Supporting Role nom to MTV News. “As an Australian, I’m as excited to be recognized and honored by the Academy as my character must have been when his London speech-therapy business flourished when the future King of England happened to pop by one day,” Rush said in a statement. “This story has struck such a rich resonant chord with audiences of all ages, which is very exciting — to have your work honored by your industry peers is even better.” Hooper, who picked up a nod in the Directing category, also issued a statement to MTV. “I am absolutely overwhelmed by the twelve Oscar nominations for ‘The King’s Speech.’ I am so grateful to the Academy,” Hooper said. “I am incredibly proud of my extraordinary cast and crew. This is a day I will remember for the rest of my life.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The King’s Speech.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Jaime Pressly and Simran Singh: Most Likely Over

Jaime Pressly is off to a rough start here in Two Thousand Eleven. Less than three weeks after the actress was arrested for DUI , sources say that she and entertainment lawyer husband Simran Singh are calling it quits. “They are done,” one insider says of the pair, who wed in September 2009. “It’s over. I don’t think they have officially filed anything yet though.” Continues a second source , “I think it comes down to she married this guy too fast. He seemed like a good guy but he is super full of himself.” “He puts her down for everything. He picks fights over any little thing.” Sounds like a real catch. The insider adds that Pressly is most heartbroken over how the separation will affect her three-year-old son Dezi. The boy’s father is her ex-fiance Eric Cubiche. “She doesn’t want to confuse him,” says the source. “Her baby is her top priority.” Here’s hoping things are at least resolved amicably for that reason.

Classic Jersey Shore: Drunk Snooki Falls on Face, Tells Off Cops, Hauled Off to Jail

THG’s Jersey Shore recap , while thorough, does not do justice to Snooki. On last night’s special episode, she went on a bender so magnificent that she got lost and couldn’t find the beach FROM THE BOARDWALK, then when she did make it down, proceeded to eat sand. Then she dropped F-bombs on the cops. “Get the f**k off me,” pleaded Snooki , as JWoww and Deena Nicole cringed. “I’m a f**king good person!” A drunk, hilarious mess of a person, anyway: Snooki Wasted on Jersey Shore!

Justin Bieber and Angelina Jolie: Say Cheeeese!

Millions of women would kill just to stand next to Justin Bieber . Sadly, scarily, we’re not really exaggerating. But don’t put Angelina Jolie in that group. The actress posed alongside Justin on the red carpet of Sunday’s Golden Globes, much to her chagrin, apparently. A friend of Justin’s named “jonmchu” posted the following TwitPic yesterday, claiming it was snapped when Bieber met Jolie on the red carpet. But we question its legitimacy. After all, how can any female stand next to this 16-year old and maintain her composure in such a manner?!? Justin didn’t mind the snub. At the event, he Tweeted: “Backstage at the Golden Globes. Everyone is here. This is nuts!!”

Howard Stern on Jay Leno: What a Crook!

Howard Stern is not a fan of Jay Leno . That’s not exactly breaking news. But his tirade against Leno in his interview with Piers Morgan, set to air tonight on CNN, takes it to a new level. The Sirius radio jock, who’s made his feelings on The Tonight Show host known in the past, says Leno is “not fit to scrub David Letterman’s feet.” Howard Stern Slams Jay Leno Among Stern’s complaints? Jay ganks jokes. “Jay is insane. And Jay is a crook. And the world knows exactly what he’s up to. He steals a tremendous amount of material,” Stern told Morgan. “This guy’s ripped off like 10 major things from my show. I don’t know how [Leno’s] beating David Letterman in the ratings… America must be filled with morons who at night lay in bed… the ones who are watching him must be in a coma.” Yup, sums it up pretty well, we’d say.
