Big Boi, Rutina Wesley, Joey Lawrence Reminisce On ‘When I Was 17’

The stars remember flunking tests and having no underwear on the latest episode. By Mawuse Ziegbe Joey Lawrence on “When I Was 17” Photo: MTV “When I was 17 years old, I went to go [take] my driver’s license test,” Big Boi remembered on the latest episode of “When I Was 17” . Although the young MC was already showing tons of promise and was well on his way to hip-hop stardom with fellow ATLien and Outkast spitter Andre 3000, there was one task that eluded the budding star. “I was so worried about trying to parallel park. I was always trying to slide this way, slide that way. I’m so nervous about that, I get in the car, I’m driving and the man’s like, ‘Well, you did great and everything, you can parallel park, but you didn’t put on your seatbelt, so you failed.’ I was like, ‘Damn.’ ” Like Big Boi, “Blossom” hunk Joey Russo was a talented teen dealing with fame. Unlike the young MC, Russo had to handle a unique professional experience that only comes with the ability to spark teen girl hysteria with a flip of your pretty, pretty hair: having your own doll. “Of course I have a Joey Russo doll … or 30,” Lawrence’s mother Donna quipped. Although the plastic Joey doppelganger was mom-approved, the TV teen idol didn’t think the plastic likeness truly captured his image. “Doesn’t it look a cross between something from “Grease”?” Lawrence said, examining the figure decked out in mid-’90s finery like ripped jeans and a leather jacket. “It’s like Danny Zuko meets me, sort of.” Lawrence did concede that making the Russo doll was a cool process “because you’d go and they had the molds of your head and you had to sign off and say ‘Mmm that nose is nice.’ ” The doll-makers got the noses fine, but they needed some motherly advice when it came to plastic Russo’s too-hot-for-TV-parts. Mama Lawrence insisted the doll be outfitted with some underwear. “I didn’t want there to be any attention on areas that shouldn’t be discussed,” Lawrence’s mom explained. Whoa. “True Blood” starlet Rutina Wesley was still flirting with the idea of fame when she was 17 and of course, what better way to live out starry-eyed dreams than to appear in a production of the musical “Fame.” “What I love about ‘Fame’ is it’s sort of like I was living ‘Fame.’ I was going to a performing-arts high school, [and] I knew the hard work it took to be there. The auditions were brutal for that show, I remember I had to dance, sing and act, and it was really tough,” Wesley recalled. As die-hard fans of “True Blood” know, the actress found her true home was in the spotlight. “The theater at my school was awesome,” she laughed. “It was a 1,400-seat auditorium, so, being in that auditorium at 17, and having, like 1,400 people cheer for you was, like, one of the most amazing feelings that I’ve ever felt, energy-wise. It just felt right.” “When I Was 17” airs Saturdays at 11 a.m. on MTV. Film Festival Buzz: Natalie Portman, James Franco, Joaquin Phoenix And More

New movies from Ben Affleck, Casey Affleck, Danny Boyle and others are drawing attention at this year’s Telluride and Venice film festivals. By Eric Ditzian Natalie Portman at the Venice Film Festival last Wednesday Photo: Danny Martindale/ Getty Images Around this time last year, George Clooney’s “Up in the Air” opened at the Telluride Film Festival and rode that initial buzz to six Academy Award nominations. A year later, another crop of high-profile films have premiered at Telluride and the Venice Film Festival, including new work from Danny Boyle (director of 2009’s Oscar winner “Slumdog Millionaire”), Darren Aronofsky (“The Wrestler”) and Ben Affleck (“Gone Baby Gone”). Which films will we be feting in the weeks and months to come? Here’s a look at the most buzzed-about movies from both fests. “Black Swan” Just days before Aronofsky jetted off to Venice to present his follow-up to “The Wrestler,” the director confessed to MTV News that he gets very nervous before one of his film’s premieres. “When ‘The Wrestler’ showed at Venice the last time, I walked out in the middle,” he said. “I couldn’t handle it. I snuck back in the end. It was not a pleasant experience.” Aronofsky may have been nervous, but “Black Swan” was indeed well-received, with rapturous praise reserved for star Natalie Portman that immediately makes her a Best Actress Oscar front-runner. Pete Hammond of Deadline Hollywood dubbed her turn a “dazzling tour de force.” The film follows Portman as a ballerina ready to take over the lead role in her company’s production of “Swan Lake,” until a rival dancer (Mila Kunis) shows up and begins to drive Portman toward madness. ” ‘Black Swan’ is a brilliant mind f—,” wrote Peter Sciretta of SlashFilm . “It is one of the boldest films I’ve seen produced by a Hollywood studio in years.” “127 Hours” Danny Boyle debuted “Slumdog” at Telluride in 2008, a decision that came to be seen as a wise one, and the critical darling went on to sweep the Oscars months later. Boyle’s back now with a true story about a hiker (James Franco) who becomes trapped under a boulder in the wilderness and must saw off his own arm to escape. Like Portman, Franco is being discussed as a potential Oscar nominee. “[Franco] pulls off a virtual one-man show,” said Stephen Farber of The Hollywood Reporter . “The actor already has demonstrated tremendous versatility, and just this year, viewers have seen him as one of Julia Roberts’ lovers in ‘Eat Pray Love’ and as Beat poet Allen Ginsberg in ‘Howl.’ Here he manages to create a radically different character — an extroverted adventurer who is forced to turn reflective. Expect Oscar to come calling next year.” “The Town” Ben Affleck’s heist drama does not premiere until Wednesday (September 8), but anticipation is high based on the director’s past work and the new film’s impressive ensemble, including Jon Hamm, Blake Lively, Jeremy Renner, Rebecca Hall and Chris Cooper. “It’s hard to disavow a movie when you’ve written, directed and acted in it,” Affleck told The New York Times . “This is an emblem of the person I want to be going forward.” “The King’s Speech” British director Tom Hooper might not be well- known on American shores, but his new film just might be the buzziest one to debut at Telluride or Venice. Colin Firth stars as member of the British royal family who overcomes numerous obstacles to become King George VI. He’s joined by Helena Bonham Carter, Geoffrey Rush and Guy Pearce, among others. “After several additional screenings and a rare standing ovation Sunday night as part of a companion tribute to Firth … the film has provoked talk of widespread awards recognition,” said The Hollywood Reporter . “While other films also attracted partisans, ‘The King’s Speech’ was seen as having the broadest support across a broad array of awards categories.” “I’m Still Here” The questions began early in 2009: Just what the heck was going on with Joaquin Phoenix , with that bushy beard and the unhinged public appearances? Phoenix and Casey Affleck filmed the entire unraveling, and now audiences are starting to decide for themselves: documentary or mockumentary? Trouble is, not everyone is convinced they’ve come to the right conclusion. ” ‘I’m Still Here’ finally addresses the question of whether Joaquin Phoenix’s decision to give up acting to pursue a hip-hop career was on the level or a setup. The answer seems to be: a bit of both,” reports Variety . Affleck, of course, is not exactly setting the record straight, which only amps up anticipation for the film. “Elliptically, I would say … I sincerely don’t want to influence people’s interpretation,” Affleck told reporters in Venice, according to The Associated Press . “I can tell you there is no hoax. It makes me think of ‘Candid Camera’ or something.”

Jessica Alba Calls Her ‘Little Fockers’ Character ‘Totally Crazy’

‘I play a pharmaceutical sales rep who is very, um, outgoing,’ Alba tells MTV News of the Ben Stiller/ Robert De Niro comedy. By Kara Warner Jessica Alba in “Little Fockers” Photo: Paramont In addition to kicking butt in Robert Rodriguez’s “Machete,” Jessica Alba is also appearing among the star-studded cast of “Little Fockers,” the third installment in the franchise that features Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro playing out their often awkward son-in-law vs. overprotective father-in-law relationship. “I play a pharmaceutical sales rep who is very, um, outgoing and has no sense of personal space,” Alba recently told MTV News. She hinted that her character might inadvertently try to get a little too close to Stiller’s lovable Gaylord Focker. “She says exactly what’s on her mind and she has no filter at all,” the actress explained. “She was really fun because I’m pretty much the opposite of that.” Alba admitted that keeping a straight face on set was a big challenge, since most of her scenes were with funnyman Ben Stiller. Still, she had a blast, she said, particularly with her character’s freewheeling ways. “It was just fun and pretty liberating to play someone who was just so open and so free and totally crazy.” “Little Fockers” is set a few months after the events of the last installment, “Meet the Fockers,” as Stiller and Teri Polo’s parents-to-be busily prepare for baby. Producer Jay Roach told MTV News earlier this year that Stiller’s attempt to remain calm is thwarted by a familiar face (and former nemesis). “It’s Owen Wilson coming back with a new passion for Ben’s wife, Teri Polo,” Roach said. “And of course it’s hidden and it’s all under the surface, but it causes a lot of new wrinkles in the relationship between all of them,” the producer explained. In addition to Alba and Wilson, “Fockers” will also feature Dustin Hoffman in the role of Stiller’s father opposite Barbra Streisand, an addition to the cast that was only recently made due to the film reportedly coming in under budget. “Little Fockers” is due in theaters December 22. From the saucy Jessica Alba in “Little Fockers” to James Franco’s grueling journey in “127 Hours,” the MTV Movies team is delving into the hottest flicks of fall 2010.
