Emma Roberts Channels Ke$ha In ‘Celeste And Jesse’

‘I got to bring together every pop star and fold it into one person,’ actress tells MTV News. By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Elijah Wood and Emma Roberts Photo: MTV News PARK CITY, Utah — Emma Roberts has always been a friend to MTV News, particularly at the Sundance Film Festival . Last year in Park City, we were fairly sure that we got Emma to drop a massive “Scream 4” spoiler — namely that she wasn’t going to survive her encounter with Ghost Face — and we were right … partially. At this year’s Sundance, our conversation with Emma was not so grim. The up-and-coming actress has a starring role in “Celeste and Jesse Forever,” a comedy about a divorcing couple struggling to maintain their friendship during an intense period of transition. In the film, which also stars co-writer Rashida Jones , Roberts goes against type as a pop star named Riley, who is an amalgamation of various musical icons. But according to the actress, there’s one particular singer she took her cues from. “I got to bring together every pop star and fold it into one person,” she told MTV News about her role in the film. “[But] my hair is definitely Ke$ha . I have these fabulous long, blond, slightly ratty extensions. I miss those dearly.” Of course, hair alone does not make a pop star. Roberts had to sing and dance to get into the role, rocking out with a dance anthem that was co-written by Jones herself. “We recorded a song that Rashida co-wrote with a bunch of people, and it’s just wildly entertaining and inappropriate and it’s kind of a dance anthem. It was fun,” she said. “You know when you listen to songs and they yell at you to have fun? That’s kind of what we decided to do, because I love being yelled at to have fun and dance!” Who doesn’t? The 2012 Sundance Film Festival is officially under way, and the MTV Movies team is on the ground reporting on the hottest stars and the movies everyone will be talking about in the year to come. Keep it locked with MTV Movies for everything there is to know about Sundance. Lana Del Rey: ‘I Don’t Love Live Television’

Before ‘Saturday Night Live,’ singer said, ‘You can’t expect too much.’ By Gil Kaufman Lana Del Rey on “Saturday Night Live” Photo: NBC It’s been a rough few days for singer Lana Del Rey. Her instantly legendary awkward network TV debut on “Saturday Night Live”
has been dissected, dissed and defended endlessly since last weekend. But the one thing we haven’t heard in the wake of the polarizing performance is how Del Rey feels about how she did. While she still hasn’t officially commented on the criticism, the singer spoke to the Fuse network just days before the “SNL” gig and said that, frankly, live performance is not really her thing. “You can’t expect too much from my show,” Del Rey said, explaining that her real fans are probably aware that she’s more of a songwriter and studio musician than performer and that she thinks people who come to see her show are really just there to hear the songs they already like. “Sometimes I feel less nervous than other times,” she added. “I don’t love live television. The only tip I have is just pray and just hope that things work out.” That attitude pretty much fits what Del Rey told MTV News
before “SNL,” when she said she finds singing on TV “weird.” “[It] depends on the day,” Del Rey said. “Depends on what’s going on with my family and everyone around me. If I have other things to think about, or I’m trying to get things done for somebody else, and I’m not in my own way, then … I’m like, ‘This doesn’t really matter.’ Sometimes it seems more important to me than other times.” And though everyone from “NBC Nightly News” anchor Brian Williams to actress Eliza Dushku and singer/actress Juliette Lewis (whose tweets have since been deleted) piled on Del Rey in the moment, since the dust has settled a bit, another actress has come out in defense of the singer. “Whitney” star and stand-up comedian Whitney Cummings, who faced her fair share of criticism when her NBC sitcom debuted last year, posted a blog on Thursday in which she pleaded with haters to chill out. “I have many random thoughts. First, everybody calm down,” she wrote. “It’s a little troubling that when a young girl fails at something that we keep kicking her why she is down. I get very protective of girls, especially young performers, because they live a hard, emotionally challenging, often physically challenging life where you are constantly given reasons to be insecure and have panic attacks. I totally get the stuff about her not deserving to be there and I don’t mean to insult musicians in any way if that’s how they feel obviously, but this is an opportunity to show us how hard being a performer is so maybe they can all be cut some slack.” Cummings honed her act for years on the stand-up circuit before breaking through last year with her sitcom and a producer and co-creator credit on “2 Broke Girls,” and she said she doesn’t feel qualified to judge Del Rey’s performance. “It takes a long time to get good, and even when you are good, you can be challenged by new venues and being televised, and cameras, and the uh…fear and terror of being slammed by critics and bloggers,” she wrote. “Plus if you are a woman you also get fashion criticism and if you’re a pretty woman you’re accused of having plastic surgery and if you’re not you’re ‘busted’ and people blog about how they don’t want to f— you … it’s not ideal.” Add into that mix the self-hate and self-criticism that many artists have, and Cummings said even when things go perfectly, it’s still hard. “So when it goes bad, it’s just the worst vortex of misery,” she said. “If she fell on her face, she was there, she felt it, and her having lived it is punishment enough. We don’t need to keep bashing her unless it makes us feel better about ourselves which … isn’t an ideal reason to hate someone.” Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Lana Del Rey Related Artists Lana Del Rey

As the star of ABC’s new show “Scandal,” as well as a role in the next Quentin Tarantino film, Details magazine caught up with the actress before she takes off into stardom. And got her to pose in only a blazer and some boots! On being recognized by strangers: “I guess what they’re going to say they recognize me from.” If it’s a teenage guy? “You’re the blind girl from Fantastic Four !” A European? “It’s always The Last King of Scotland .” A lesbian? “ She Hate Me !” The one performance that everyone recognizes her for is the long-suffering wife in Ray . “That’s the wild card in Uno.” On going to college to study theater: I wasn’t invested in the fame part. On her new ABC show “Scandal” where she plays a character based on Judy Smith, the real-life PR guru who advised Monica Lewinsky, Michael Vick, and Wesley Snipes : I’m really fascinated with how people become who they are. French Star Alexandra Lamy Shows Her Golden Globes at the Golden Globes [PIC]

Tinseltown’s most titillatingly named awards show was held in Los Angeles last night, and while the Globes were dominated this year by non-nude flicks like The Descendants and The Artist , ’twas not all covered on the awards-show front. Brightening up an exceptionally dull ceremony, French actress Alexandra Lamy (who was there supporting her husband, The Artist star Jean Dujardin ) got so excited at her hubby’s Best Actor win that her foxy French funbaguette popped out of her gown (top). Talk about Holly-WOOD! Plus, Nudity Hall-of-Famer Michelle Williams picked up a Globe for her perv-formance as Marilyn Monroe in My Week with Marilyn , as did her fellow Hall-of-Famer Kate Winslet for Mildred Pierce . Nude stars Laura Dern and Claire Danes were surprise Best Actress winners for their shows Enlightened and Homeland , though sadly neither slipped a nip on the platform. ‘Homeland’ Wins Golden Globe For Best TV Drama

New Showtime series beat out fan favorites ‘Game of Thrones,’ ‘Boardwalk Empire.’ By Terri Schwartz Claire Danes at the 2012 Golden Globe Awards Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images There was a new collection of faces in the nominee pool for best dramatic TV series at the 69th annual Golden Globes . With the exception of “Boardwalk Empire,” which won the Globe in this category last year, all of the contenders were newcomers. There were the dragons and other medieval intrigue of “Game of Thrones” and the ghosts of “American Horror Story,” but Showtime’s thriller “Homeland” ended up being the show that took home the award. Creators Alex Gansa and Howard Gordon took to the stage to thank virtually everyone involved in the making of “Homeland.” They both credited everyone from the show’s stars, Claire Danes and Damian Lewis, to the writing and directing crew for making this one of the most critically acclaimed new shows of the season. “I cannot tell you how wonderful it is to be standing here on behalf of all the talented people that helped to make this show,” Gansa said during his acceptance speech. Gordon added, “I want to thank everyone who watches and enjoys this show because it makes this very special for us to do.” The new Showtime series follows a CIA agent (Danes) who comes to believe that a Marine (Lewis) who had been held captive by al-Qaeda as a prisoner of war has actually been turned by the enemy and now threatens the United States. Everyone else, however, considers the Marine to be a war hero. The CIA agent must turn to a fellow operative to investigate the Marine and prevent another attack on American soil. The series is based on the Israeli TV show “Hatufim.” “Homeland” beat out fan favorites “Game of Thrones” and “Boardwalk Empire,” as well as the critically acclaimed “Boss” and “American Horror Story.” This is its first Golden Globe win of the night. Stars Lewis and Danes are also nominated for Best Actor and Actress, respectively. ‘Descendants’ Wins Golden Globe For Best Drama

George Clooney also won a statuette for his performance in the Alexander Payne film. By Amy Wilkinson George Clooney in “The Descendants” Photo: 20th Century Fox No tissues were necessary for the cast and crew of weepy drama “The Descendants.” The Alexander Payne-written and -directed film took home the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Drama, beating out star George Clooney’s other film “The Ides of March,” along with “The Help,” “Hugo,” “Moneyball” and “War Horse.” “We had an extraordinary ensemble cast of young and older actors, veterans and newcomers, but our quarterback was George Clooney,” said producer Jim Burke during his acceptance speech. “Besides giving a career-best performance, in my mind, he was a generous actor who helped everyone do his best. So thank you very much, George. And if this movie becomes a timeless movie, which I feel like it will be to me, I feel like it’s because of our filmmaker and friend, Alexander Payne.” “The Descendants” received five noms from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, including Best Performance by an Actress (Shailene Woodley), Best Director (Alexander Payne), Best Screenplay (Nat Faxon, Alexander Payne and Jim Rash) and Best Performance by an Actor, which Clooney won . Clooney also paid tribute to Payne in his acceptance speech, saying, “Thank you very much to Alexander Payne, who makes wonderful films and is a great friend.” The flick, about a widowed land baron (Clooney) who’s forced to reconnect with his young daughters, has racked up plenty of awards-season buzz (and was among MTV’s top 10 films of 2011 ). The film earned seven nominations and won Best Actor for Clooney at the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards on January 12. The nods at tonight’s Golden Globes could be a harbinger for things to come, as the Academy Award nominations will be announced January 24.
