Complete, Remastered Hour of ‘Orson Welles: War of the Worlds’ radio broadcast!

The War of the Worlds was an episode of the American radio drama anthology series “Mercury Theatre on the Air”. It was performed as a Halloween episode of the series on October 30, 1938 and aired over the Columbia Broadcasting System radio network. Directed and narrated by Orson Welles, the episode was an adaptation of H. G. Wells' novel, 'The War of the Worlds'. The first two thirds of the 60-minute broadcast were presented as a series of simulated “news bulletins”, which suggested to many listeners that an actual alien invasion by Martians was currently in progress. Compounding the issue was the fact that the Mercury Theatre on the Air was a 'sustaining show' (it ran without commercial breaks), thus adding to the program's quality of realism. Although there were sensationalist accounts in the press about a supposed panic in response to the broadcast, the precise extent of listener response has been debated. In the days following the adaptation, however, there was widespread outrage. Because the program's oration included a segment in which “radio has a responsibility to serve in the public interest at all times,” the news-bulletin format was decried as cruelly deceptive by some newspapers and public figures, leading to an outcry against the perpetrators of the broadcast and some confirmed suicides. ————- The Full, Unedited 1938 Welles Production is brought to you in 7 parts: (Part One) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4wf5TPVz56A (Part Two) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUBisKB5l98 (Part Three) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejt_aWUrEp8 (Part Four) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2aYZPkHEp_s (Part Five) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wxLjcz1oE8 (Part Six) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4fFLmXZ9Lmk (Part Seven) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QuDdAe17OL0 ————— For more on “Yellow Journalism,” please indulge in the following: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellow_journalism added by: jeffissleeping

Angelina Jolie and George Clooney to Play Marilyn Monroe and Frank Sinatra?

Um, OK! According to author Andrew O’H agan , Angelina Jolie will play Marilyn Monroe in the adaptation of his recent novel, The Life and Opinions of Maf the Dog, and of His Friend Marilyn Monroe . The book is told from the perspective of Monroe’s Maltese terrier, a gift she received from Frank Sinatra (who will supposedly be played by George Clooney, natch). No word yet on who will play the dog, but how long before Brad Pitt’s name surfaces? Now if you’ll excuse me, there’s a mountain of salt I have to choke on. [ The Guardian ]

How Does ‘MacGruber’ Compare To Past ‘Saturday Night Live’ Films?

‘We weren’t worried about the ‘SNL’ aspect of the movie,’ Will Forte tells MTV News. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Photo: MTV News Let’s play Rank the “Saturday Night Live” Movies! We’ll go first. “The Blues Brothers” did it first and, arguably, best. “Wayne’s World” has got to be up there, and for some strange reason, we have a soft spot for “Coneheads.” At the other end of our highly subjective spectrum, we’ve got “It’s Pat,” “The Ladies Man” and “Blues Brothers 2000” duking it out for last place. Where might Will Forte’s “MacGruber” fall? The early buzz on this adaptation of a sketch about a wildly incompetent action hero is largely positive. Forte himself isn’t bothered by the comparisons to “SNL” flicks past. If you ask him, the varying reception of those films is about on par with the way decades’ worth of movies have been embraced — or rejected — by the public. “The ‘SNL’ track record is about the same as the movies-in-general track record,” he told MTV News. “There are a lot of crappy movies out there and a lot of great movies. Sure, there has been some ‘SNL’-based movies that have sucked; there have been some great ones.” And the great ones, as anyone who plays Rank the “Saturday Night Live” Movies can attest, are certainly in dispute. No one will argue against the enduring appeal of the first “Blues Brothers” or “Wayne’s World” films, but it gets trickier from there on out. Just ask “MacGruber” director Jorma Taccone. “It’s funny, because I feel like there tends to be a lot of bad stuff talked about ‘SNL’ films online, and some of those films I think have a lot of funny parts to them. I’m actually a fan of ‘Ladies Man,’ and I’m a fan of ‘Night at the Roxbury.’ Those are funny movies to me. This movie is not at all those movies. It’s entirely different than people are thinking it’s going to be.” For one, half of what flies across the big screen in a series of curses and explosions would never make it onto network TV. And, more importantly, MacGruber doesn’t blow himself up one minute into the story (as happens in all his “SNL” sketches ). The bottom line is that everyone involved had their eyes less on fidelity to sketch comedy and more on making a killer movie. “We weren’t worried about the ‘SNL’ aspect of the movie,” Forte said. “We just tried to make the best movie we could.” Added Taccone: “We just wanted to take this character who we loved, who’s a tremendously flawed individual, who’s somehow loveable, and stick him in an ’80s action movie.” Check out everything we’ve got on “MacGruber.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Stephenie Meyer’s ‘The Host’ Could Begin Filming Next Year

‘Twilight’ author’s first adult novel is well on its way to the big screen. By Christoper Campbell Stephanie Meyer Photo: MTV News With the film installments of her “Twilight” novels not yet fully completed, Stephenie Meyer is already well into the development of her next film franchise. According to Deadline.com , the adaptation of the author’s first adult novel, “The Host,” could go before cameras as early as next year. Published in 2008, the book involves benevolent yet parasitic aliens who have taken over the minds of almost all the humans on Earth. Upon its release, Meyer described the plot to MTV News as ” ‘Invasion of the Body Snatchers,’ if the aliens had won.” Although financing is not yet in place and no definite shooting schedule is planned for the sci-fi/horror hybrid, producer Steve Schwartz divulged that “Truman Show” Oscar-nominee Andrew Niccol is currently working on his third draft of the screenplay, with the author’s close involvement. Niccol is also signed on to direct the film. Schwartz, who is now budgeting the project with co-producers Paula Mae Schwartz and Nick Wechsler, again noted that Meyer handpicked the filmmaker because Niccol’s directorial debut, “Gattaca,” is one of her favorite science-fiction films. However, his hire was not immediate. “We spent time with Andrew,” Schwartz explained. “Listened to his vision, introduced Andrew to Stephenie and she responded. There is very good chemistry in this group. Stephenie is a very smart collaborator, and she had an intuitive strong hunch he would be the right guy. Based on the script we’ve seen, we think she was right.” Fans will have to wait and see if Meyer is also right about her dream cast for the film, which she told MTV News in 2008 includes Robert Redford, Matt Damon and both Ben and Casey Affleck. Another uncertainty is when — or if — Meyer will ever finish her two planned sequels to “The Host.” Regardless of whether or not the adaptation spawns further novels or movies, a 2011 shoot could put “The Host” in theaters before the “Twilight Saga” ends, depending on when the second part to the two-film adaptation of “Breaking Dawn” is released. Plus, with Meyer’s announcement of the “Eclipse” spin-off novella “The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner,” there’s now a tease that Summit Entertainment could extend the hot vampire film series even further than a fifth installment. Would you go see the film version of “The Host” in theaters? Let us know in the comments! For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .
