Adele’s ‘Rolling In The Deep’ Is MTV’s Song Of The Year!

British belter’s hit tops MTV’s list of the Best Songs of 2011. By James Montgomery Adele Photo: Columbia Was there any doubt? Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” has topped MTV’s Best Songs of 2011 . The megahit so dominated 2011 that calling it the Song of the Year is putting it mildly. And we’re not just talking commercially — though it was the year’s best-selling track — or critically, mostly because focusing on those details fails to tell the whole story. In a lot of ways, “Deep” was bigger than all that. It was a genuine cultural touchstone, the rare zeitgeist-seizing thing that kept crossing genres and platforms and demographics (quick, try to name somewhere you didn’t hear it) until there really were no borders left to bust. It was a complete throwback, a reminder of an era when folks actually bought music and one single could drive an album for months and months. It was the rarest of phenomena in these increasingly temporal times, an actual defining piece of work — not just for Adele, but for the entirety of 2011. Try as hard as you might, you probably can’t name the biggest song of 2010, but in 10 years’ time, you’ll still remember that “Rolling in the Deep” owned 2011. That accomplishment is all the more noteworthy when you consider that “Deep” dared to focus on emotions that fall outside the usual parlance of pop, circa 2011. It is not about partying or falling in love or material excesses. It does not try to be uplifting or inspiring. There is not a single Will Ferrell sample to be heard anywhere. It is, simply put, a total bummer of a breakup tune, with Adele sifting through the ashes of her failed relationship, the scorned lover who can’t help but lament that, really, “We could’ve had it all.” Of course, she’s not exactly a shrinking violet, either, and “Deep” seethes with genuine anger too. No matter how classy her voice may be, there’s nothing quite as real as her promise to “lay your sh– bare.” It strips away the artifice and adjectives and exposes the raw nerve that pulsates within anyone who’s ever had their heart broken. And, really, that’s everyone. So given that sentiment, perhaps it’s not exactly shocking that “Deep” was such a massive hit. Then again, given everything else, maybe it is. A deceptively simple song, it rolls along on little more than a stubby guitar line and pounding, primal drums and yet it packs a 10-megaton wallop, thanks entirely to some ugly emotional bloodletting and Adele’s sonorous, searing pipes. When she hits that chorus, you not only feel her pain, you can relate to it. That’s what sets the truly great songs apart from just the good ones, and “Rolling in the Deep” is unquestionably a great song, one that you’ll remember for years to come. Which is why simply calling it the Song of the Year is selling it short; it’s something bigger entirely. Consider it the anthem to end all anthems, the feel-bad song of our time, the antidote for the Auto-Tuned masses. But maybe it’s best just to call it Adele’s coronation into the ranks of the all-time greats. She’s now and forever the Queen of Pain . Long may she reign. Lindsay Lohan on Playboy Pics: When Nature Calls …

Lindsay Lohan is feeling the call of nature these days. The star, who poses nude in Playboy in a Marilyn Monroe-inspired layout, says that was the simple reason she decided to bare all for the men’s magazine. The nearly seven-figure payout probably didn’t hurt, either. “Sex and sexuality are a part of nature, and I go along with nature,” Lohan told Playboy . “I think Marilyn Monroe once said that. I certainly agree with her.” To guys everywhere, the Lindsay Lohan Playboy pictures are either arousing or amusing. But to the “actress” herself, they are completely empowering. “It’s a very male-dominated world we live in to begin with, so knowing yourself and being comfortable with your body is an important thing for me as a woman.” Lohan, who is vacationing with her sister Ali Lohan in Hawaii, puts great importance on “knowing yourself and your body because it gives you confidence.” Amid a slew of legal problems that have landed her in jail over the last few years, says she now knows how to make better decisions with her brain, too. “Looking back, I probably would have listened to and taken more advice from the people whom I admire and would have followed through with it more.” “My stubbornness at 18 and 19 years old got in the way,” she adds . “During the past five years, I’ve learned that time flies faster than you think, and you only live once. You have to learn from your mistakes, live your dreams and be accountable,” says one of the least accountable people to have ever lived. The Playboy spread will be released early (it’s now coming out late next week) after the cover and some of the inside photos were leaked online.

Tom Cruise Reflects On ‘M:I’ At ‘Ghost Protocol’ Debut

Actor also gives MTV News a Les Grossman update at Dubai premiere. By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Tom Cruise at the Dubai premiere of “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” Photo: MTV News After four “Mission: Impossible” films, Tom Cruise has seen his fair share of action sequences as special agent Ethan Hunt. So many of the series’ famous set pieces come to mind almost instantly: infiltrating Langley in “Mission: Impossible,” climbing a rock face freestyle in “M:I 2” and now the stunt outside Dubai’s Khalifa Tower in “Ghost Protocol.” When MTV News’ Josh Horowitz caught up with Cruise at the latest film’s premiere in Dubai, he asked the actor which famous action sequences he looks back on with the most fondness. “It’s hard to say, because each one has been so different, and each had different kinds of challenges,” Cruise said. But few will deny that the iconic rappel into the heart of CIA headquarters is the series’ defining moment. Cruise recalled the challenges he had filming that scene. He credits director Brian De Palma for the scene’s success. “I remember when I was doing it, my head kept hitting the floor. … I was running out of energy, and we were running out of time,” Cruise said. De Palma said if they didn’t get the stunt on the next take he would be forced to pull it off with tricky editing. “To one of the stunt guys, I said, ‘Give me your pound coins out of your pocket,’ ” Cruise said. “I put the pound coins in my shoes, the tips, so that’s what allowed me to be able to balance and keep off the floor for that whole shot. That kept my face from hitting the floor.” That wasn’t the end of it, though. Cruise needed to maintain that position for the rest of the take. “De Palma knew that we had the shot, and he just held it and held it. I was like, ‘How long can I hold off the floor?’ Brian had a fantastic laugh, and then he said, ‘All right, cut.’ ” One of the projects Cruise has been attached to for a while is the long-gestating “Tropic Thunder” spin-off for his scene-stealing character Les Grossman . There have been no signs of progress toward production, so Cruise updated us on its status. “It’s not where we all want it to be,” Cruise said, suggesting that Internet shorts may be the way to go. “[Les Grossman] is so much fun to do. There are all different kinds of things we’re thinking about.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Adele In No Hurry To Record 21 Follow-Up

‘I haven’t even thought about my third record yet,’ Adele tells Billboard. By Gil Kaufman Adele Photo: Jon Kopaloff/ FilmMagic Everywhere you went in 2011 it seemed like Adele was there. With such hard-to-escape singles as “Rolling in the Deep,”
“Someone Like You,” “Rumor Has It” and “Set Fire to the Rain,” she ruled the charts and radio on her way to landing the year’s best-selling album with 21. If she were taking a page from the Rihanna playbook, that would mean that right about now, the British belter would be hard at work on a follow-up to her smash. But, in keeping with the long, slow burn of “Rolling” and her generally less hectic pace, Adele recently told Billboard magazine that she’s taking her time with album #3. Still unable to speak after recent surgery to remove a benign polyp from her throat, the six-time Grammy nominee emailed the magazine that she’s looking forward to some “do nothing” time in the near future. “I imagine I’ll be 25 or 26 by the time my next record comes out, as I haven’t even thought about my third record yet,” said Adele, who is 23. “I’m just gonna lay some concrete, set up home and just ‘be’ for a bit. I’ll disappear and come back with a record when it’s good enough. There will be no new music until it’s good enough and until I’m ready.” She’s had plenty of time to do the latter, given that she canceled all remaining 2011 dates in October to rest her voice and recover from the surgery. The good news is, the surgery went really well and, while it may take a bit of time to build her chops back up, going forward, it will be much easier to sing than before, she said. “And mentally, I won’t be worried about my voice onstage anymore,” she said, speculating that by February — the Grammys are February 12 — she’ll be ready to sing again. Explaining that she was inspired by late British siren Amy Winehouse’s self-created artistic method, Adele said she sees no upside to having a specific, market-tested plan as an artist. “Who f—ing cares if people don’t get it or don’t like it? I’d rather trust myself, to like what I’ve done and stick to my guns than make music I don’t like, wear clothes that don’t suit me and flutter between genres because I’m scared I won’t be relevant if I pass my ‘sell by’ date,” she said. “Amy tattooed that in me! She made music because she was good at it and wanted to. And she was a huge artist who was always a bigger fan. That’s why I gravitated towards her and listened when she sang and spoke.” She’s also careful about overexposure and not taking every opportunity to hawk 21 just to move a few more units. “If I did everything, my artistry and music would become diluted,” she said. “Performances and interviews travel globally and instantly nowadays because of YouTube, Twitter, Facebook and blogs. I’d be repeating myself and be overexposed if I did every TV and every magazine cover I was given the opportunity to do.” Refreshingly, she also admitted that “my career isn’t my life,” saying she leaves work at the door when she comes home and has stuck with her same group of friends and advisers, from obscurity to worldwide fame. “Of course I’m bowled over by people’s response to 21, and when I meet artists I love, it blows my mind,” she said. “But it baffles me as well. I go home and my best friend laughs at me, rather than going to a celebrity-studded party to rub shoulders with people who know me but who I don’t know. I’m Z-list when it comes to that sh–.” MTV is also celebrating the Best of 2011 , so tune in all next week to see our panel of experts count down the top EDM artist of the year as well as best overall song and artist of 2011. Adele’s ‘Live At Royal Albert Hall’: No Flash, Plenty Of Substance

Adele’s live concert film — due November 29 — is a straightforward affair, which is quite perfect, actually. By James Montgomery Adele Photo: Jon Furniss/ WireImage There is something to be said about a film that delivers exactly what it promises. And Adele’s brand-new “Live at the Royal Albert Hall” concert flick does exactly that. There are no backstage vignettes, biographic set pieces or interviews with breathless fans. Instead, as the title implies, there is just Adele, live at the Royal Albert Hall (or, as she puts it, “Royal Albert F—ing Hall”). Of course, there’s nothing wrong with that. Because rather than fill 90-odd minutes with artfully acute black-and-white montages or various bits of fly-on-the-wall ephemera, director Paul Dugdale makes the very wise decision to feature nothing more than Adele’s bright, brilliant face, her contagious cackle, her rather impressive grasp of profanity and, of course, that voice. It’s the catalyst behind her massive 21 album (10 million sold worldwide!) and the entire Adele sensation, really. And for those fans yet to see her live, thanks to ongoing vocal issues , that’s really all they could ask for. Because “Live,” which hits stores November 29, presents Adele at the height of her powers (and humors), onstage for an emotional homecoming show at one of the planet’s truly iconic venues (“I’ve seen the Spice Girls here and Enrique Iglesias here!” she gushes). Filmed less than two months ago — which may explain the lack of bells and whistles — it is a simple, straightforward, almost Spartan concert film, the kind of thing you’d watch on PBS (and not in movie theaters worldwide, which fans will get the chance to do ). While that may sound like a criticism, it strangely works in this context, mostly because it lets Adele shine. She sings the hell out of songs like “Hometown Glory,” “I’ll Be Waiting,” “Turning Tables” and “Chasing Pavements,” breaks down in tears following a truly epic “Someone Like You,” and vamps through “Rumor Has It.” She goes huge on “Set Fire to the Rain,” belts out Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me,” lilts through a fizzy cover of the Steeldrivers’ “If It Hadn’t Been for Love” and, in a truly powerful moment, dedicates her version of Dylan’s “Make You Feel My Love” to the late Amy Winehouse. Of course, there are also the lighter moments, like how she endlessly drinks warm honey out of a mug with a Dachshund printed on the front, expresses her sheer amazement at playing a venue the caliber of the Royal Albert Hall (“I’m sh–ting myself!” is how she puts it), dishes on former flames, professes her love for Dolly Parton, continuously waves to fans in the audience (even when she’s singing a crushing breakup tune) and laughs her way through a false start of “Take It All” (“That was a sh– note; let’s start it again”). And “Live At the Royal Albert Hall” presents it all. In a lot of ways, it comes about as close as any concert film to replicating the experience of attending a real concert. In the screening I attended Tuesday, I actually had to remind myself not to clap at the conclusion of a couple songs. I’m not making that up, either (though it would make a nice front-of-box quote). And in that regard, it is a tremendous success; you definitely get the full experience. Adele is luminous, compelling, funny and profane throughout, and like I said, her voice is in tiptop shape. So if you’re in the 90 percent of fans who own 21 but have yet to see her live, you’re definitely going to love it. If you were expecting high art, best to look elsewhere. Then again, it’s not like the title of the film didn’t give you ample warning. Have you seen Adele live? Let us know your thoughts in the comments! Related Artists Adele

Kelly Clarkson ‘Stalking’ Adele For A Duet

‘I’ve been trying to sing with her for a while,’ Clarkson tells MTV News. By Christina Garibaldi Kelly Clarkson Photo: MTV News Kelly Clarkson doesn’t mind a little friendly competition. The former “American Idol” winner recently told MTV News she didn’t care if Coldplay “killed” her on the Billboard albums chart (her latest, Stronger, came in second, selling 163,000 to Mylo Xyloto ‘s 447,000). Clarkson might not give a second thought to chart placement, but what does she think about all these other pop divas who have taken over the airwaves? “I always think it’s healthy to have a lot of stuff out there, and there’s room for everybody, because everybody is so different, especially all the women right now in the industry,” Clarkson told MTV News. “We’re all very different from each other, which I think is good. It keeps it not boring.” We have to agree: The “Mr. Know It All” singer is anything but boring, recently telling the U.K.’s Guardian : “I want to punch Adele in the face! She is just too good.” Of course, she was kidding. “That’s a term of endearment for me,” Clarkson laughed. “I think maybe overseas that didn’t read well. I meant more to be funny. She’s just so talented; she’s just so ridiculous it’s upsetting.” Adele — who, like Clarkson, is known for her emotional songs about love and heartbreak — is set to undergo surgery to treat her vocal issues, but when she recovers, we have an idea who might want to work with her. “I’m stalking her currently through interviews. Every interview, they are like, ‘Who do you want to work with?’ ‘Adele! I want to do a duet with Adele!’ ” Clarkson said. “I’ve been stalking her since we did ‘[VH1] Divas’ together, actually, and we were supposed to sing together, and then they changed the concept to where we would sing with somebody from a different generation. That was actually really cool, because I got to sing with Melissa Etheridge , and she’s amazing. That wasn’t like a letdown or anything, but I’ve been trying to sing with [Adele] for a while.” Clarkson will be returning to the “VH1 Divas” alongside Mary J. Blige, Jill Scott, Florence and the Machine, Jessie J and Jennifer Hudson . “I always think competition is healthy, it’s good. Even, like, Jennifer Hudson — let’s say that people that are fans of her don’t know me very well; they’ll tune into ‘VH1 Divas’ or something and be like, ‘Oh, I didn’t know I’d like her,’ ” Clarkson said. “VH1 Divas” premieres December 19 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Never Try to Knock a Kid Off a Bike

Do not, for any reason, try to open your car door and knock a kid off a bike. In this video, seen on Comedy Central’s Tosh.0, one smart ass, sitting in the back seat of a moving car, attempted just that, swinging his door open and attempting to derail an unsuspecting biker. It probably seemed like a funny idea at the time. Until karma, or just a car, came from the other direction … Kar(ma) Smashes Into Kid

Does Adele Have Throat Cancer?

Adele rumors spiraled out of control this weekend after the British soul singer announced the cancellation of all her remaining 2011 concerts and appearances. On Twitter, fans speculated that the chart-topping “Rumor Has It” singer, who has been plagued by health issues, was actually diagnosed with throat cancer. Not the case, says the 23-year-old via her rep: “We would like to reiterate that Adele is to undergo surgery for a hemorrhaged vocal cord. All reports regarding any other condition are 100 percent false.” Adele has battled throat problems throughout the year as her beloved album 21 soared the charts worldwide, and will undergo surgery for the matter soon. Her return date is unknown, but “a full recovery is expected” as she rests and fully recuperates before looking to schedule any new work commitments. We’re already looking forward to when that day comes. [Photo: WENN.com]

Get Well Soon: Adele Cancels Tour Dates To Get Surgery To Repair Her Vocal Chords

Adele’s gotta get that voice that’s earned her millions together. Adele, the British soul singer who has dominated the music charts in the United States and Britain all year with her album “21” (XL/Columbia), will undergo surgery to repair her vocal cords and has canceled her scheduled concerts for the rest of the year, Columbia Records announced. The singer has been plagued with medical problems related to her voice. Early this month she canceled a tour of several American cities – the second time during the year she had been forced to cancel concerts here — saying she had suffered a hemorrhage near her vocal cords and had been ordered to take an extended rest. But on Friday Columbia said in a statement that Adele would have surgery to fix the problem. Though she is expected to make a full recovery, the label said that “doctors have ordered her to rest her voice and completely recuperate before looking to schedule any work commitments.” Ticket-holders for the canceled concerts — six shows in Britain — will receive refunds, the statement said. We hope she gets it together. We need that voice in our lives because she has infinite jams. Sometiiiiiimes it lassssssts in loooooove and sometimes it hurrrrrts insteaaaaad… Source
