Porn Star Teacher Stacie Halas Loses Appeal to Get Job Back

Disgraced porn star teacher Stacie Halas, a.k.a. Tiffany Six, has apparently lost her bid to reclaim her job after being fired from her job at a California middle school. Halas had hoped not just to get her science teacher job back, but to set a precedent for people looking to escape an embarrassing personal history. No dice. A three-judge commission put a stop to both, saying firmly and unanimously that Stacie Halas should not be teaching in the classroom. “We were hoping we could show you could overcome your past,” Halas’ lawyer Richard Schwab said. “I think she’s representative of a lot of people.” Despite Schwab’s (true) claim that Halas’ past “does not involve anything illegal or anything that hurts anybody,” Judge Julie Cabos-Owen sided against her. Such a past matters, she ruled, in an age when technology makes porn easy to access and hard to bury , and the Internet will continue to impede her. “Although her pornography career has concluded,” the porn past inhibits her ability to be both an “effective teacher and respected colleague,” Cabos-Owen said. Stacie Halas, 32, was continually deceitful about her nine-month career in adult films before she went to work at the school, the judges also noted. Schwab said Halas “attempted to be honest and forthright, but was embarrassed and humiliated by her past experience in the adult industry.” Halas was fired in April from Haydock Intermediate School in Oxnard after online videos of her in porn were discovered by students and teachers. Student claims that the teacher was moonlighting as a porn star were initially dismissed after school officials said they couldn’t find any images of her. However, they were using the school’s computers, which don’t allow access to porn; downloads of Halas’ sex videos from smartphones outed her.

Fiscal Cliff: Averted By Last-Minute Deal!

A full two hours after a midnight deadline, the U.S. Senate overwhelmingly passed a deal Tuesday to avert the feared fiscal cliff of tax increases and spending cut. The bipartisan bill passed 89-8. Budget cuts will be put off for two months and income tax cuts for individuals earning less than $400,000 or couples earning less than $450,000 are preserved. The measure now goes to the U.S. House where it faces an uncertain future in the GOP-controlled body. However, the Senate’s margin of passage sends a message. It is not expected that the House will reject the bill (although anything is possible) and thus allow taxes to rise on almost every single American. “Glad it’s over,” said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) after the vote. “We’ll see if the Republicans in the House can become functional instead of dysfunctional.” A statement from House leadership made no promises, though a vote could come as early as New Year’s Day. The House is scheduled to convene at noon. Under the Senate fiscal cliff package : Taxes would stay the same for most Americans. They will rise for individuals making over $400,000 and couples making over $450,000, with the top rate increasing from 35 percent to 39.6. Itemized deductions would be capped for those making $250,000 ($300,000 for couples). Taxes on inherited estates will go up to 40 percent from 35 percent. Unemployment insurance would be extended for a year for 2 million people. The alternative minimum tax – a perennial issue – will be permanently adjusted for inflation. Child care, tuition and research and development tax credits would be renewed. Reimbursements for doctors who take Medicare patients will continue, but it won’t be paid for out of the Obama administration’s health care law. Milk prices should remain relatively stable. What’s not addressed is the debt ceiling, and the so-called sequester – a series of cuts in federal spending that would have taken effect Wednesday – beyond March 1. Going over the fiscal cliff would have reduced the budgets of most agencies and programs by 8-10 percent, and Congress will have to resume those talks soon.

Hugh Hefner and Crystal Harris: Married!

As the nation narrowly avoided plunging over the fiscal cliff , Crystal Harris and Hugh Hefner took a plunge of their own, getting married on New Year’s Eve! The couple tied the knot in a small ceremony at the Playboy Mansion. Hugh Hefner and Crystal Harris were originally supposed to walk down the aisle in June 2011, but she called off the wedding days before it was scheduled. They reconciled earlier this year and got engaged just a few months ago. Then the pair finally married their roller coaster romance official Monday, and from the looks and sounds of it, a joyous time was had by all as we bid adieu to 2012. Hef tweeted out the photo above after the ceremony, offering fans a look at Crystal’s dress and writing “Happy New Year from Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Hefner!” Harris, who’s already going by “Crystal Hefner” on Twitter now, added, “Today is the day I become Mrs. Hugh Hefner. Feeling very happy, lucky, and blessed.” This is the first marriage for Crystal, 26, and the third for Hugh, 86, who has four adult children from his two previous wives. Why are you drawn to this particular subject matter? In 2008, I co-authored a definitive biography about John Holmes (A Life Measured in Inches) with Michigan born Jennifer Sugar . During the book’s development, Jennifer and I interviewed several women who had worked during the golden era and they shared some great stories. It just seemed to me to be a natural next step to write another biography focusing on the females of the classic erotic film era, especially since I’d already made a lot of connections throughout “Inches”. I was fascinated as to how and why they had decided to work in sex films. It’s an interesting topic partly because the subject of adult entertainment was completely foreign to me prior to working on these two books, yet I grew up during the same era as many of the women I’ve featured. I felt it would be worthwhile to flesh out the women’s personal experiences and find out if there was a common denominator linking their histories, their childhoods, lifestyles, and so on. I also wanted to document their stories and felt I was the right person to do so, given the fact, I have no connection to the adult industry and I had already co-authored a book on an adult film icon. When you started working on the book, did you have a certain type of audience in mind? It was and is my hope that this book will appeal to mainstream audiences in addition to retro adult film fans because it is centered on renegade women who made a rather unorthodox life choice. This is a story about women, and about how they were able to integrate into a world that most people couldn’t even begin to fathom. At the same time, this is also a story about coming of age. Many of the women in this book share a deep bond that could never be fully appreciated by outsiders because of their unique vocation. Unless you have walked in their shoes, it’s very difficult for many people to comprehend or rationalize their lives and reality. These ladies have experienced something that entitles them to a lifelong membership to an exclusive club. Involvement in sex films was (and still is) taboo during the time they entered the entertainment industry. Prior to 1988, it was illegal to participate in adult themed films so that makes their era even more significant because they had to be discreet. I would like to engage readers into lives of these females, and I hope the book reveals that in reality, these women are real people not unlike anyone’s next-door neighbor. They are not the depraved individuals many people in society have created in their minds. What did the research process entail? Did you uncover anything that came as a complete surprise? In order to compile the book, I set out to interview all twenty-five women with a specific list of questions that would entail their childhoods, careers and present day. The interviews were conducted in person, over the telephone, via email, and by skype. I transcribed all of the interviews myself and organized them while incorporating film reviews into the chapters within the context of each story. I screened approximately 125 feature films for the book. In addition to my questions, as we began to do the interview, generally, I would allow them to veer into a direction that they wanted to discuss or have made known. I was surprised to realize how educated and articulate many of the women I featured are which reaffirmed my belief that there are many reasons why they each chose this line of work, even when there were other options available to them. I’ve often said since having completed this book, that these ladies are some of the strongest and loyal people anyone would ever want to meet. You mention in the book that both Rhonda Jo Petty and Seka personally encouraged you to write this book and put you in touch with some of the other women. Were all your interviewees so excited to have their stories told? Actually, I would have to say that most if not all of the women were excited to have their stories told. The ones who were not willing to share their stories declined the offer to participate in the book, which is something I completely understand. It isn’t easy to put yourself out there, so to speak, and it hasn’t been an easy road for any of them, especially after leaving the industry behind and attempting to transition into another line of work. There are many former performers and artists who don’t want their pasts to catch up with them. The people who accepted my offer to be a part of the book were very excited and happy to have an opportunity to set the record straight on many issues, not only about themselves, but also about the adult entertainment industry in general – the good and bad. Many of these legendary ladies have struck a chord with fans that resonates to this day. What do you think is the difference that sets them apart? All of these women started their careers during the sixties, seventies, and eighties decades, when the adult entertainment industry was still relatively innocent and unsophisticated in comparison to today. The number of performers were far fewer, and fans were able to get to know and relate to the various personalities. The men who worked as performers did not have the benefit of sexual enhancements. If you couldn’t get it up and/or maintain an erection for however long it took to shoot a scene, basically, you were gone. That is why there were only about fifteen to twenty men working in the industry during the golden era. I believe that the amount of women who enjoyed a career during those years were proportional to the amount of men who were employed which created a family atmosphere and a great camaraderie among the actors, directors, and crews. Many of the crews who worked during the classic era of adult films were people who had worked in mainstream Hollywood, but couldn’t get enough work in order to sustain them so they came over to the other side. These were often well regarded, directors, producers, wardrobe, hair and make-up artists, and scriptwriters who showcased the stars of the films, the women, to show off their best features. Prior to the 1980s, the movies were shot on film rather than videotape which added a certain luster and rich quality to the pictures and created an aura of mystique around the women and the presentation of the actresses. I also think that in those days, women (and men) didn’t aspire to be “Porn Stars” like many young women and men do today. The group I’ve written about sort of migrated into the industry for various reasons; some of them already had careers in other fields or they were established actors who had done stage, television or film work, and so this was really another extension of acting in many ways. A few of the women in the book entered adult films in their late-thirties, which would be unheard of today, so it was very different on so many levels. Some of the females entered films solely for the money while others got involved to rebel against their parents or society. The sixties and seventies, and even the eighties decades to a certain extent were rebel rousing, free spirited decades. Nowadays, society seems to have reverted to using safety nets, and people are regimented, regulated and guarded. As a whole, we are no longer risk-takers. These women have the common thread of being pioneers in the adult industry, but were there any other similarities in their stories? There isn’t anything glaring that binds every single profile, but I’d have to say there are commonalities shared between a few of the women featured in the book with respect to their childhoods. Some of the ladies experienced some kind of family trauma either in the form of abusive caregivers, or issues of abandonment, or neglect, but I wouldn’t necessarily say that is why they chose to work in the pornographic film industry. There are innumerable people in the world who have experienced the same kind of challenges, but they don’t choose porn. Some of the ladies claim to be exhibitionists which certainly helps to explain why they were able to engage in sex on camera, but again, not all were entirely comfortable with that process so there are exceptions to that theory, too. The one element they all have in common is their intelligence and street smarts and their inner strength as women and as individuals. They have to be tough to have done what they did which was (and is) not acceptable in the eyes of society – no matter how liberated and accepting we claim to be – and survive. I greatly admire their ability to hold their heads high. These women are not in hiding obviously, or they wouldn’t have agreed to be a part of this book. At the same time, they need to still exercise caution as a part of their everyday lives, because there are still situations and enough reasons to keep their porn personas and their real identities separate – as much as is possible in this day and age with the available technologies. Who was your favorite person to interview? It’s very hard to choose one person out of the entire group because I enjoyed all of the interviews for different reasons. It’s funny, while proofing my book I could still hear their various voices and the intonations used when making specific points, which is kind of interesting. I’d have to say that Kay Parker stands out in my mind as one of my favorite interviewees because she has such a fascinating way of looking at life. She is a highly spiritual person and mentor and an attuned individual to the rhythms of people and of the universe. I very much respect her devotion to her faith and her positive outlook. She is warm and wise. Director Julia St. Vincent has become a good friend of mine, and one of the reasons I enjoy her so much is because she has tremendous wit and a great sense of humor. She cracks me up, so for that reason alone, I remember our interview vividly and fondly. Laurie Holmes is also a friend, and one of the things I respect about her is that she is very direct. She doesn’t mince her words, which has sometimes caused friction in her life but she remains true to who she is in spite of the consequences. Seka ’s interview also comes to mind because I interviewed her in person at her hotel in Montreal while she sprawled across her king-sized bed. She was extremely frank about everything we discussed, and in her own way, she is also very comedic and brash. People tend to think of Seka as strictly all business and she is which has been a great way for her to sustain and capitalize on her name and fame, but she’s also a lot of fun. Gloria Leonard is memorable for her great insights and candid comments about her place in the industry. She’s an amazing woman and is extremely bright, as are Veronica Hart , Candida Royalle , and Nina Hartley . These women are individualists. Apart from being a porn star, Nina is an educator and a registered nurse. She completely debunks any notion of exploitation of women in the industry so our interview was quite remarkable. Annie Sprinkle was also a wonderful interview. I love how she has evolved from porn star to activist to ‘Global Goddess’ which is how I titled her chapter. Along with her partner, she is enlightening the world about environmental issues by uniting sex with nature. I think it’s a brilliant idea. Rhonda Jo Petty is another favorite of mine. She is down to earth and unpretentious, and very likeable. Her story is probably one of the most moving in the book. Then there is Marilyn Chambers , who is no longer with us. I interviewed her five years ago for Inches and I was happy that I was able to utilize a lot of our dialogue after she passed in 2009 which was very sad. Georgina Spelvin is another terrific lady and an extremely gifted and interesting person. I really don’t want to leave anyone out here, because all of the girls were and are terrific in their own ways. This would become a ten-page interview if I were to list all of the highlights of our discussions or my reasons for remembering certain aspects of them. I am very fortunate to have had the opportunity to talk to these women while they are still with us. I am honored that they entrusted me to share their stories. Was there anyone you wanted to interview but weren’t able to? I had hoped to interview Mai Lin and Vanessa del Rio but it didn’t work out. That’s okay, because you win a few and you lose a few. It wasn’t anything personal it was more about schedules and communication. I had approached Annette Haven and we went back and forth for about a year or more, but she declined in the end. Porsche Lynn is one of the people I did interview for ninety minutes and when the interview was over, it hadn’t taped which was very disappointing. I tried to reconnect with her, but it didn’t happen. I don’t blame her at all, it was my fault for not testing my device, but I can happily say, that’s the only time there was a technical malfunction during the development of this book. I decided to take those missed opportunities and turn them into something workable so I created a section at the back of the book titled Honorable Mentions. It features a short synopsis on the four women cited above and I added eleven more to bring the total number of women in the book to forty – the number forty is synonymous with the fortieth anniversary of hardcore films this year, 2012. Do you think anyone could be an adult film star given the chance? I think anyone could become an adult performer today if given the chance and if they have the desire and will, but I don’t think they would have the longevity like the women featured in my book do. I truly believe the star system is a thing of the past so I don’t know what the motivation would be for anyone to choose porn, especially when there is still such a stigma attached. If they do make that choice, I would recommend that they have a plan B in place and get an education with the money they earn from their work. One of the greatest travesties involving the women highlighted in Golden Goddesses is that in many cases, there was no contingency plan in place once their careers ended which has hurt them financially. In those days, receiving residuals from films was almost non-existent so the producers and financiers became wealthy, but not the actors, which is often true of mainstream Hollywood in days gone by. What’s next for you? At present, my focus is promoting the book which I plan to do for the next year or so. We will be officially launching Goddesses at a Gala event hosted by Hustler Hollywood on the 29th of this month, followed by a special evening at Larry Edmunds Bookshop on the 30th. Several of the women will be attending both nights so it’s going to be a very exhilarating two days. Twilight Finale Flirted With An R-Rating

There’s a ballyhooed sex scene between Bella and Edward that received a respectable 8 on ML’s Scream-O-Meter , but it apparently was some violence that almost earned Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 an R-rating from the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), which would have caused quite a stir and conundrums in Twi-hard Land, which still counts quite a large crowd of teens among its ranks (not that that crafty crowd wouldn’t have found a way). Still, the ” Restricted: Children Under 17 Require Accompanying Parent or Adult Guardian ” would smack of potential box office blues for a franchise riding on a gangbuster turn-out and a final cash infusion for Summit, the franchise’s distributor. Initially, Breaking Dawn Part 2 received the R because of some extreme violence by way of beheadings, according to the Los Angeles Times. “Certainly, with any other movie, there are a thousand ways to kill people,” director Bill Condon told the Times. “With this one, it’s a variation on the same theme. If they were going to be offended by the idea of beheadings, we would have had no movie.” But the MPAA holds the ratings whip and the filmmaker said that some parts of the film were modified in order to give the multi-billion dollar franchise’s finale a more access-friendly PG-13 (The offending ‘R’ scenes should make for great marketing come DVD time at the end of the day). Sill, this isn’t the first time the world’s favorite vampires have sashayed with the only over 17 threat. Breaking Dawn Part 1 nearly received the R due to a sex scene (sex is often more titillating to the MPAA than violence which it more frequently tolerates, so those beheadings must’ve been doozies!) Kristen Stewart told Glamour that the original sex scenes in the first Breaking Dawn had even surprised her. “It was so weird, it didn’t even feel like we were doing a Twilight film. I was like, ‘Bella! What are you doing? Wow! What is happening here?!’ It was very surreal. We [originally] got rated R. Bree Olson, Kelley Jean, and Tuesday Cross are Tight: The Mr. Skin Interview

We’re big fans of rock music here at Skin Central, but we’re even bigger fans of porn stars, so of course we were thrilled to interview Bree Olson , Kelley Jean , and Tuesday Cross of the porn star-turned-rocker movie Tight . The recently released film follows four adult performers who have never had any trouble getting men to bang heads, Monica Mayhem , Tuesday Cross , Alicia Andrews , and Layla Labelle . With hardcore superstar Bree Olson on hand as manager, they headed to Las Vegas on a quest to become the world’s hardest-rocking raunch ‘n’ rollers. After filming wrapped, lead singer Monica Mayhem left the group and was replaced by another adult performer with a great set of lungs, Kelley Jean , who led the band to a victory on Howard Stern’s XXX Factor talent competition back in April. Bree, Kelley, and Tuesday took some time off from turning the whole world on to talk to Skin Central about groupies, the finer points of band life, and their favorite music for getting it on. We don’t think this is the kind of man-eating pu**y that Nelly Furtado was singing about… Police In Nepal Fear Man-Eating Leopard Has Killed 15 People Via CNN A ferocious leopard may have killed 15 people in Nepal in a 15-month span, its latest victim a 4-year-old boy that the creature dragged away into the jungle to eat. The head of boy was found in the forest a kilometer from his home Saturday morning, said Kamal Prasad Kharel, the police chief of the Baitadi district, an area about 600 kilometers (373 miles) west of Kathmandu. The grisly discovery, which came after teams of people searched for the child, marks the 15th victim in the past 15 months in that remote district in western Nepal. The police chief suspects that a single man-eating leopard is responsible for the deaths. If not, there are at most two of the man-eating creatures around, he believes. Maheshwor Dhakal, an ecologist at the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation in Kathmandu, agreed that it is unusual to find more than one or two man-eating animals in one area. Most leopards live on wild prey. Why are the leopards eating humans you ask? “Since human blood has more salt than animal blood, once wild animals get the taste of salty blood they do not like other animals like deer,” Dhakal said. Oh, so we’re just tastier than deers and whatnot, gotcha…SMH Of the 15 victims in Nepal so far, two-thirds are children below the age of 10. The others are older children and a 29-year-old woman who had gone to collect fodder for domestic animals in the nearby forest, a common practice in Nepal… …”In the case of the children it just leaves behind the head, eating everything, but some parts of the adult body are left behind because it cannot finish it,” Kharel added. WATCH: Sarah Silverman Asks John C. Reilly If He’s ‘A Hobo’ In Wreck-It Ralph Clip

After throughly enjoying Adult Swim alumnus Jim Tozzi’s Psychocats parody trailers for Seven Psychopaths (which made me even more focused and productive in the office), I’m counting the minutes until some new-media smart-ass takes this fun  Wreck-It Ralph clip and makes it funnier by splicing in some of  Sarah Silverman and John C. Reilly’s less, um, family-oriented comedy. Reilly plays the title character of the Rich Moore-directed Disney animated picture, which hits cineplexes on Nov. 2.  He’s Wreck-It Ralph,  a vide0-game villain from a Donkey Kong-like game who tires of being the bad guy and goes on a vision quest of sorts to prove that he can be a hero. His journey takes him through a couple of game scenarios, including Sugar Rush , a candy-themed Mario Kart homage, where he encounters Vanellope von Schweetz, a cutesy voiced cookie full of arsenic.  In this clip, Vanellope proceeds to needle Ralph by, for instance, asking him if he’s “a hobo” and commenting on his “freakishly big” hands until he pronounces her “freakishly annoying.” Perhaps because the word freakish gets tossed around, I found myself hearkening back to these YouTube clips featuring Silverman on Conan O’Brien’s TBS talk show and Reilly on Adult Swim as the genius Dr. Steve Brule.  In the right hands their words coming out of Ralph and Vanellope’s computer-generated mouths could be pretty diabolically funny. Missing mothers, lost wives, abusive and indifferent father substitutes —   Looper  may be a movie powered by time travel, but its emotional fuel is abandonment. The new film from  Brick director Rian Johnson is a clever, clever contraption about trading in your future to feed your present, and the lost boys and regretful men who willingly embrace such a bargain already believe they have nothing to live for or look forward to. Thirty years of kicking around with a lot of cash in your pocket looks like a pretty good bargain when you’re gazing down at it from in front of all that time, but when those last few days are running out, you might not be so ready to go. Looper may not have the bell-ringing resonance of Chris Marker’s  La Jetée , one of its touchstones, but it’s a jaunty match-up of genre and character drama that’s far smarter and more finely wrought than almost anything else in the multiplexes. The film’s set a few decades in the future, where technology’s a little better and life in general is worse, at least in the Kansas metropolis in which Joe ( Joseph Gordon-Levitt ) lives.  Looper ‘s setting of a midlevel Midwestern city and the ragged, lived-in feeling of its 2044 are a pleasingly off-kilter approach to its sci-fi premise. We don’t know what the government’s like in this year, or what the larger world’s become because it’s not so important to Joe, a young man who’s building up cash reserves and easing his off-hours with drugs until he’s free to move to France. Joe’s a looper, a job he explains with a matter-of-fact lack of curiosity: when time travel is invented a few years from his present, it’s instantly outlawed and used only by organized crime for assassinations. Murders will have become so hard to hide that it’s easier to send targets back to Joe’s era, where they can be neatly offed and disposed of by eager young men like our hero, guys who have accepted their own disposability. Joe’s self-interest is central to both the film’s premise and the way it avoids most of the tougher theoretical questions about time travel, paradoxes, how the technology works and whether people are using it for more ambitious purposes. He doesn’t care. He started out on the streets, and looping has provided him with a nice apartment and enough money to get high and to buy time with his favorite working girl Suzie (Piper Perabo). Like the town in which he lives, Joe’s nowhere near the top of the food chain, and has no interest in climbing. He’s just waiting on his big payout that will come once he closes his loop by killing off his future self — part of the devil’s bargain that all loopers make. Looper is built around our buying Bruce Willis as Joe’s future self, a feat that rests more on a wry impersonation by a prosthetics-aided (and very good) Gordon-Levitt than on the older actor. When the tougher and more world-weary Old Joe is sent back in time to die, he arrives with a mission in mind, but his younger self has no desire to hear it. The scenes in which the two Joes confront each other at a diner are among the film’s best. Youth and experience are unable to relate — even though they’re technically the same person — because their priorities are completely different. It’s an amusing and dishearteningly well-articulated take on how useless it would be to be able to offer your younger self advice when your younger self isn’t ready to hear it. While it’s no looper contract, we do trade in our future for present enjoyment in small ways all the time (by, for instance, taking up smoking or by spending money instead of saving it).  Looper  offers an even-handed look at both perspectives, even as it sends Old Joe off to make a terrible exchange on behalf of the future and follows younger Joe as he goes on the run and ends up taking shelter on a farm on which a woman named Sara (Emily Blunt) lives with her young son Cid (Pierce Gagnon). After a stylishly noir first half that’s simultaneously futuristic and retro — “20th-century affectation,” Joe’s boss Abe (Jeff Daniels) sneers at his employee’s preference for ties —  Looper becomes more thoughtful and a little more jumbled in its second section, as it slows down for Joe to find some human connection for the first time in his adult life. With touches of  The Terminator ,   the aforementioned Marker film and the inspired-by-it  12 Monkeys , a classic episode of  The Twilight Zone and more,  Looper  is aware of its sci-fi legacy, but manages plenty of unique touches all its own. The depiction of Kansas is one, combining future tech and a farming lifestyle unchanged by the advance in time. A sequence in which Joe’s colleague Seth (Paul Dano) meets an unfortunate fate is innovative in its horror. But despite the fleet-footed flash of its storytelling, what’s most impressive about Johnson’s movie is its dark-edged faith in people being able to change despite the path on which they’ve been set. If all we’ll ever be is a product of the circumstances in which we grew up, then time travel’s almost unnecessary — the future’s predetermined.
