‘Sweet Valley High’ To Be A Musical, Diablo Cody Confirms

‘It’s going to blow people’s minds,’ screenwriter tells MTV News about the in-the-works adaptation. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Diablo Cody Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images Diablo Cody explored the life of one particular “Young Adult” author in her screenplay for the Charlize Theron film. Next up, she herself is taking on the challenge of adapting a beloved young-adult franchise, “Sweet Valley High,” for the big screen. And while she’s knee-deep in work for the project, when MTV News caught up with the screenwriter at the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards on Thursday night in Los Angeles, she revealed one very juicy detail about the adaptation. “Oh my gosh! OK, so I am so excited about ‘Sweet Valley High.’ There’s original songs being written for it right now, which is the most exciting development. They’re amazing. They’re being written by these Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning songwriters from Broadway who are the best,” she gushed, confirming that the film will be a musical version of the novels. “Brian Yorkey and Tom Kitt, who wrote [the Broadway show] ‘Next to Normal’; they’re amazing and I’m sorry, I could go on and on. But I’m very excited about ‘Sweet Valley High.’ It’s going to blow people’s minds. I haven’t really had the chance to talk about this yet, so it’s exciting.” The Francine Pascal novels (which debuted in 1983) follow the lives of twin teenagers, Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield, who live in Sweet Valley, California. The series is full of puppy love, teen angst and the kind of drama and comedy that keeps people tuning into the CW and ABC Family week after week. If you’ve never read the books before, Cody assures you that you can still love the movie. “It [has] a lot of familiar ’80s awesomeness for fans of the series, and if you’ve never heard of ‘Sweet Valley High’ you will want to,” she said, noting that casting plans are still to be determined. “Obviously I will be playing the twins. Old-fashioned ’60s-style split screen,” she joked. Kristen Stewart A ‘Good Fight’ In ‘Snow White,’ Charlize Theron Says

‘The bitch brought it!’ she tells MTV News at the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards about ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ rival. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Charlize Theron attends the 2012 Critics’ Choice Movie Awards Photo: Getty Images It’s no secret that we are very excited about Kristen Stewart’s first big non-“Twilight” movie, “Snow White and the Huntsman,” which made it through to the Sweet 16 in the MTV Movie Brawl 2012 . We’re excited not only because Stewart is the star, but because she is playing an action-star version of Snow White and faces off against a very formidable Evil Queen in Charlize Theron. The last time we caught up with Theron, she hadn’t yet filmed the big fight sequence with Stewart but admitted that she hoped her Evil Queen might get the best of Stewart’s Snow White. “I’m just really, really, really hoping I get to kill her,” she said with a smile. “That is how the story ends up, right?” We’re pretty sure that isn’t how the story ends — especially since we happened to bump into Theron again at the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards on Thursday (January 12), and she seemed to be changing her previous tune. When we asked the Oscar winner and Best Actress CCMA nominee for “Young Adult” if she’d filmed the epic fight sequence, she didn’t seem too keen to divulge any details. “Yeah,” she admitted, “but I don’t want to talk about it.” Why didn’t Theron want to talk about it? Did the fight not end in her favor? “I don’t want to talk about it. No! No, it’s going to be a surprise,” she said, resisting our probing questions. “Dammit, I give you way too much. People have to pay money to go see the movie to see what happens.” Theron finally relented a bit and revealed that Stewart’s Snow White does, indeed, kick some ass. “She was a good fight,” Theron said. “She was a good fight. The bitch brought it! There you go. Now you have something.” Stick with MTV News all night for the 2012 Critics’ Choice Awards winners , and don’t miss all the fashion from the red carpet ! Justin Bieber’s Next Album Is ‘Ridiculous’

Manager Scooter Braun tweets from studio where singer is working on Believe. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: George Pimentel / WireImage With Justin Bieber in full-on album recording mode, his longtime manager, Scooter Braun, has heard just what the teen star is up to and wants everyone to know that Believe is a game-changer for the singer. “Wow!! In the studio with @justinbieber and #Believe is going to be ridiculous!!!” he tweeted about the 17-year-old’s 2012 release. Braun’s message came the same day that Bieber announced that he’s officially working on the project. “Start recording full time for #BELIEVE today. let the fun begin! #newMusic,” he tweeted on Tuesday, hours later adding, “#studio.” But it seems that he’ll take a break to hit up the Consumer Electronics Show, which is currently under way in Las Vegas. “Gonna see what is coming next. #gadgetNERD,” he proclaimed. While Bieber has said that he wants his next release to recall Justin Timberlake’s Future Sex/Love Sounds sonically, in a recent interview with V magazine, he noted that what he’ll be singing is a bit more PG than the topics Timberlake covered on that album. “I’m not going to try to conform to what people want me to be or go out there and start partying, have people see me with alcohol. I want to do it at my own pace,” Bieber says in the issue. “I don’t want to start singing about things like sex, drugs and swearing. I’m into love, and maybe I’ll get more into making love when I’m older. But I want to be someone who is respected by everybody.” Bieber may not want to get too graphic on this album, but vocal producer Kuk Harrell did note to MTV News that he will be maturing on it in his own way. “The only conversation we’ve had about Justin’s album that we’re about to do is it’s really important that it’s the proper transition because we’ve seen him [with] ‘Baby,’ now we’re watching him grow up,” said Harrell, who also worked with the singer on Under the Mistletoe. “And we can’t just throw him into the adult game right away. It has to be the proper transition. There’s a record in between.” Are you looking forward to Justin’s next album? Tell us on our Facebook page! Demi Moore Joins ‘Lovelace’ Biopic

Actress will play feminist icon Gloria Steinem in flick about adult film star Linda Lovelace. By Jocelyn Vena Demi Moore Photo: Jeffrey Mayer/ WireImage “Lovelace” has found its Gloria Steinem. Demi Moore will play the feminist icon, who covered the release of the adult film “Deep Throat” and profiled its star, Linda Lovelace, in Ms. magazine back in the 1970s. According to The Hollywood Reporter, other new additions to the cast include Adam Brody, who will play Lovelace’s “Deep Throat” co-star Harry Reems, and Eric Roberts, who’s onboard as lie detector expert Nat Laurendi. “Lovelace” is currently shooting in Los Angeles, where Moore, Roberts and Brody join Amanda Seyfried (as Lovelace) and James Franco, who’ll make a cameo as Playboy founder Hugh Hefner. The film also stars Peter Sarsgaard as Lovelace’s husband, Chuck Traynor; Bobby Cannavale and Chris Noth as “Deep Throat” investors Butchie Peraino and Anthony Romano; Hank Azaria as writer/director Jerry Damiano; Robert Patrick as Linda’s father, John Boreman; and Sharon Stone as Lovelace’s mother. Juno Temple will play the adult film star’s best friend and Wes Bentley has been cast as her second husband. “Howl” directors Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman are helming the project. According to previous reports, the role of Rat Packer Sammy Davis Jr. has yet to be cast. “It’s going to be really hard and kind of terrifying at the same time,” Seyfried told ABCNews.com about the role in December. “It’s something completely different. I do have some liberties there but I am playing someone that existed in history and had quite an established reputation for something very extreme.” Seyfried is not the first actress attached to the Linda Lovelace role. Seyfried’s “Mean Girls” co-star and Playboy cover girl Lindsay Lohan was set to star in a separate Lovelace biopic before getting dropped by producers more than a year ago. Before Seyfried nabbed the role in this latest biopic, Olivia Wilde had also been mentioned as a possible star. Jesus Take The Multiple Desserts: The Super Chubby Lumpkins Swirlin’ Jawn Says She Smoked Crack To Lose Weight After Her Black Mandingo Left Her Lonely!!

Hold up, waaaaaaaait!! For years, the 44-year-old mother of two was a star in the fantasy fetish community that worshipped the overweight and the feeding that led to it. Simpson had a website where men paid $19 a month to watch her eat. She flew around the world for various events. And she became famous in the British papers. But as the year winds to a close, Simpson has moved on. She left New Jersey earlier this year after her romantic relationship with a man ended and returned to her hometown of Akron. She has turned away from the fantasy world, replacing her pre-recorded videos of her with a blog about her journey to health. She already has lost about 85 pounds, and she hopes to join a gym soon to begin walking in a pool. She has modified her eating, as well. “I realized that I was their fantasy,” she said. “Here I was getting bigger and bigger, and they had their thin wives, with 2 1/2 kids and a picket fence.” Being that she is 600 lbs. Simpson doesn’t believe that she will ever be a Victoria’s Secret model, but she did go through some pretty dramatic model-esque lengths to lose weight… “I’m not trying to be a size 4,” she said. “I’m not trying to be a thin-mint. I just want to be normal and more active.” She has struggled to lose weight for years. She weighed about 200 pounds when she attended Springfield High School in Summit County. Simpson often ate an apple a day along with a weight-loss drink. She said she even smoked crack cocaine for a few months several years ago in an attempt to shed pounds, though she says she didn’t become addicted. “All it did was make me clean my house really, really fast,” she said. ChitChatter: Don Cheadle Talks About What It Takes For A Black Man To Win An Oscar And How Obama Just Wasn’t Gangsta Enough With Jet Magazine

Kudos to the folks over at JET for one of the best cover stories we’ve read in a minute! Don Cheadle is the mag’s front man this time around and he shows his funny side in the feature, probably a good idea since he’s preparing to premiere his new Showtime series “House Of Lies” very soon. He executive produces and stars in the show about a greedy management consultant who has a cross-dressing son and a father who lives with him. Check out a few of our favorite excerpts from the story below: On His Resemblance To Conrade Murray: “(Conrad Murray) is actually my passion project. You hit it! I want to play Conrad Murray, but I want to do him in drag and somewhat mentally disabled because that’s what will get me my Oscar. Oh wait, for Black people you have to be like a prostitute or a gangster. I’ll do him as a prostitute and I’ll definitely get that Oscar!” On His 20 Year Relationship with Bridgid Coulter (the couple has 2 daughters, Ayana, 17 and Imani, 15): “We were married in a pagan ritual,” jokes Cheadle. “No it just wasn’t planned. Our first daughter wasn’t planned and it just happened. So we were like, we’re together. Are we supposed to get married now? After 20 years, I guess we could. It’s just never been a priority.” On Not Being Hollywood: “It’s not me,” says Cheadle. “If I suddenly became ‘that guy,’ it would seem ridiculous. I’ll kill a hooker or something, or get into a bar fight with Jamie Foxx. I dunno!” On Obama: “I think he inherited an impossible situation. I wish he had not been so much of a consensus-seeker. I just wanted to see a more ‘gangsta’ president. Good stuff right?!? Pick up the issue! More On Bossip! Silver Spoon Swag: Stars That Were Born Rich Already! The Paperboy Poster With Zac Efron and Nicole Kidman: Journalism School Musical

There’ve been updates about The Paperboy ‘s casting for awhile, but only now do I realize the gravity of what’s occurring. Um, wow: Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron are sharing a screen! And John Cusack! And Matthew McConaughey, for the hell of it! And — what now? — Lee Daniels is directing! They should call this quaint tale Extra Precious: Based on the Cutie ‘Zac’ by Efron . Synopsis and impressive poster after the jump. Downright old-fashioned and sharp. Reminds me of Young Adult ‘s evocative cover in coloring and detail. From a distance, Mr. Efron’s cheeks look a tad more pregnant than they usually do. I know what you’re thinking, and let me assure you: I’m the father. The Paperboy concerns a reporter who returns to his hometown to save a man on death row, though he’s derailed by the romance he strikes up with the inmate’s lady friend. I have the feeling we won’t get a juicy character study worthy of Nicole Kidman’s involvement in this movie, and that sucks because I’m still reeling from Rabbit Hole . Still, I’m in for Zac Efron’s sacred facial architecture. He’s like a cathedral of tawny hotness. Paperboy Poster [GossipCop]
