The following message was sent out early today from the phone of a Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid: “Leadership council of IEA (Islamic emirate of Afghanistan) announces that Ameer-ul-Mumineen (Mullah Omar) has passed away. May mighty God bless him.” According to AFP, Mujahid shot back, saying “We strongly reject this claim. We are not aware of such news. Americans have hacked our cellphones with advanced technology and sent the message to the media.” The Taliban in Afghanistan insisted Wednesday that their leader Mullah Mohammed Omar was alive, saying a text message and Internet posting announcing his death were fake. Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid told The Associated Press that the early morning announcement about Mullah Omar was the result of a hack. “He is overseeing operations in the country,” Mujahid told The Associated Press. “Outsiders must have hacked into Taliban phones and the website.” Mujahid blamed U.S. intelligence agencies, saying they were trying “to demoralize the Taliban.” Mullah Omar has led the decade-long insurgency against the U.S.-led military coalition and the Afghan government of President Hamid Karzai. He ruled most of Afghanistan as leader of its Taliban government before the United States and its allies invaded on Oct. 7, 2001, in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks. Does it strike anyone else as strange that the AP is taking statements from the Taliban??? Particularly about folks trying to “demoralize” them? SMH… So much for the “war on terror.” Source Source 2

Allah, take the wheel and drive the children far from this madness! An eight-year-old Afghan girl was killed when insurgents detonated a bomb in a bag which they had given her to take to police nearby, the interior ministry said Sunday. The incident happened in the southern province of Uruzgan on Saturday, the ministry said in a statement. “The enemies of peace and stability committed another unforgivable and shameful crime — an explosive-laden bag was handed to her and she was told to take it to police,” the statement said. “The child, pure-hearted and in good faith, took the bag and moved towards the police vehicle. As she got close to the police vehicle, the enemy detonated the bomb by remote control, killing the innocent child,” the statement added. No police or other civilians were killed, it added. The ministry did not specify which insurgent group was responsible but the Taliban are the main militant group waging a near-decade-long insurgency against the Western-backed Kabul administration. The attack happened on the same day 38 people were killed by a suicide car bombing at a hospital in Logar province, south of the capital Kabul. Maybe there really is a reason for us to be in Afghanistan after all. Source

Delta charged them anyway. A grand total of $2,800. A nice “welcome home,” I guess.
