Bad Timing: Army Vet Wins The Lottery And Makes It Rain Just Days Before Leaving For Afghanistan!!

“Wow” is all we can say… An Army veteran from Fayetteville won a quarter million dollars in the Georgia Lottery days before his return to Afghanistan. Gregg Curry, a father of three and a master sergeant with the Third U.S. Army Forces Central Command, bought a winning Cool Cash ticket while stopping to buy a bottle of water with his wife, Mary, lottery officials said Friday. Curry, 47, returns to Afghanistan Monday. He was home for two weeks from Bagram Airfield, where he’s been stationed for seven months. He’ll be in Afghanistan another five months. He told lottery officials that he plans to use his $250,000 to pay bills and take a vacation after his tour. What a helluva going away present! We appreciate your work to keep our country safe Mr. Curry, be careful over there so you can come home and make it rain on your wife! Source

R.I.P. Solider Killed In Car Accident On His Birthday After Surviving A Suicide Attack In Afghanistan!

Damn…maybe ‘Final Destination’ is real… A Purple Heart recipient survived a deadly suicide attack in Afghanistan, only to perish today in a violent car crash at his own birthday party in Long Island, officials said. Smithtown resident Seamus Byrne, 33, had been celebrating his big day with friends at Napper Tandy’s Irish Pub and was walking home at 1:45 a.m. when he was hit. Byrne, who lived just a half-mile away from the pub, was in the cross walk headed home but realizing he had forgotten to say good night to one well-wisher, according to father-in-law James Gallagher. When Byrne turned back, that’s when a 1998 Honda driven by Michael Armentano, 24, also of Smithtown, plowed into the vet, cops said. Armentano has no priors and was not impaired, officials said. Cops are still investigating, but have so far ruled the tragic crash as an accident. “He was just a really good guy, full if vigor and he loved his family,” Gallagher said of his fallen son-in-law. “It’s a tragedy.” Byrne, a member of the Army National Guard’s Fighting 69th Infantry Regiment, was deployed to Afghanistan in January, 2008, his family said. He was in a Humvee when a suicide bomber attacked nearby, killing nine and severely injuring Byrne. The Kings Park, LI, native suffered a concussion was hospitalized for several months. He’d been home in Long Island for two years but still struggled with Post Traumatic Stress Disoder, according to Gallagher. Still, Byrne persevered and worked as a carpenter. He and his wife Michelle had purchased a home two years ago and were raising their kids Seamus Jr., 10, and Ashley, 3. R.I.P. to you Seamus Byrne, you served your country and we appreiciate your sacrifice. That being said…to get hit by a car on your birthday is some ol’ BULLSH*T! SMH Source

Restrepo’s Sebastian Junger Will Head Back to Afghanistan After the Oscars

Today, the pair are Oscar nominees for their searing and critically acclaimed film about the war in Afghanistan. Which doesn’t mean the story is complete, of course: Junger and Hetherington will head back to Afghanistan in April.

Krauthammer and Shields Spar Over Pelosi-Taliban Joke and Rush Limbaugh

Charles Krauthammer on Friday made a humorous comparison between the Taliban's popularity in Afghanistan and Speaker Nancy Pelosi's (D-Cali.) approval rating in America that clearly riled Mark Shields. So put off was Shields that he not only took issue with Krauthammer's joke, but he also went after something conservative talk radio host Rush Limbaugh said about Pelosi earlier in the week (video follows with transcript and commentary): read more

Ed Schultz Indifferent to Westboro Baptist Protests – Until Elizabeth Edwards’s Funeral Targeted

Now they've really gone and done it as far as Ed Schultz is concerned. Speaking with Schultz on his radio show Thursday, Schultz's producer James Holm described plans by members of the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kan., notorious for their protests outside funerals of American soldiers killed in Afghanistan and Iraq, to stage a similar protest during the funeral of Elizabeth Edwards. The discussion between Schultz and Holm was preceded by Schultz gushing about Rev. Al Sharpton meeting with FCC officials in a thinly veiled attempt to censor Limbaugh for racial insensitivity. First, Schultz played a clip of Sharpton's remarks, not citing where they were stated, while Schultz brays his approval
