America The Oscar hopeful directed and starring Ben Affleck crossed the $100 million mark, a notable feat for a historical drama. The title took in $2 million over the weekend. Internationally it has grossed $56 million, THR reports . Rick McCallum Bolts from Lucasfilm The Star Wars producer said Saturday via Lucasfilm’s StarWars.com that he is leaving the company to produce a slate of smaller independent films including a Russian pic about the Babi Yar Massacre that Sergei Loznitsa will direct; a film by Laurence Bowen about the boy soldiers of Sierra Leone; and an action drama with Tomas Masin about two brothers who escaped Czechoslovakia during the Cold War while being pursued by thousands of Soviet soldiers, Variety reports . Kennedy Center welcomed eight performing artists to its wall of fame Sunday at a festival Kennedy Center Honors event. Actor Dustin Hoffman, TV host David Letterman, blues singer Buddy Guy, ballerina Natalia Makarova and the rock group Led Zeppelin (John Paul Jones, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant) were saluted during the affair’s 35th annual installment attended by the President and Mrs. Obama, Variety reports . Holdovers Solid As Newcomers Bow Tepid in Specialty Box Office Oscar contenders Silver Linings Playbook and Rust and Bone held solid in the specialty realm as they expanded. The overall box office had dreadful debuts from TWC’s Killing Me Softly and LD Entertainment’s The Collection . But Weinstein’s David O. Russell-directed Silver Linings held nicely with a per-theater average of just over $9K as the movie added four cinemas in its third weekend, Deadline reports . Helen Mirren ‘Unsure’ Over Reprising Queen Role Helen Mirren has admitted she felt “very unsure” about reprising her Oscar-winning role as The Queen in an upcoming London play. “I don’t like going back to things,” the 67-year-old said. “I like to go forward.” But she was won over, she went on, by the “extraordinary team of artists who are putting the play together”. The actress was speaking at the European Film Awards in Malta, where she received an honorary award, BBC reports .
As ads for pharmaceuticals go, this clip for the anti-depression drug Ablixa is textbook perfect. Wooden actors progress from sad to happy with the help of digital dark clouds, sun rays, and, presumably, the being advertised. And there’s the de rigueur reading of possible side effects. Ablixa is not an actual prescription drug, however, and the video, which I’ve posted below is actually a viral ad for Steven Soderbergh’s upcoming Side Effects , in which Rooney Mara plays a woman who turns to prescription drugs to battle her anxiety when her husband ( Channing Tatum ) is released from prison. The weird thing is that the Ablixa ad is so pitch perfect that I’m not sure why I should be watching it. As far as I can tell, the spot leaves nothing in the way of clues to the movie other than that Ablixa will probably figure into the plot and that some of the more serious side effects that the drug can cause may come into play. If you follow the prompt at the end of the ad and head to the Ablixa website , things do become more amusing. You can participate in a video analysis with Dr. Jonathan Banks, who’s played by Jude Law, and is a character in the movie. Even if you answer ‘No’ to Banks’ questions about whether you suffer from feelings of helplessness, suicidal thoughts and a lack of appetite or sex drive, the good doctor still suggests you may be a candidate for Ablixa. It’s a sad day when we have to report minimal nudity in theaters, but this week is shaping up to be practically skin-free in the cinema. The wide releases include the Brad Pitt action extravaganza Killing Them Softly (2012), which is a total sausage fest, with only Linara Washington appearing in her panties 54-minutes in. Also opening is the fright flick The Collection (2012) which spectacularly fails to reveal any stereotypical horror hoots. Your only hope for a stocking stuffer is the limited release Silent Night (2012), which features a topless Cortney Palm running from a murderous Santa. The rackarin is Baccarin on Homeland! The second season of Homeland has been thrilling in every way- except for the dearth of skin.
