Schultz Warns America: Pay More Welfare Or Become ‘Third-World Country’

The time-temp clock down at the bus station here read 104 degrees this afternoon. We can’t offer readers cooler weather, but perhaps they’ll settle for some comic relief . . . On his MSNBC show this evening, Ed Schultz warned that unless the US pays out more in welfare, we risk becoming a “Third-World country.”  Schultz said it twice, so apparently it wasn’t a bizarre one-time brain camp. Ed’s on a crusade to have unemployment insurance payments extended.  Note: unemployment “insurance.”  So once payments are extended beyond what’s provided for, it’s no longer insurance: it’s welfare. But that didn’t stop Schultz from suggesting that paying more welfare is all that stands between America becoming the next Zimbabwe . . . ED SCHULTZ: It’s unconscionable what we are putting these Americans through.  And I will tell you this: this is how Third World countries get started. A bit later, Schultz floated his cockamamie theory to a “union political consultant,” who was only too happy to agree. SCHULTZ: This is going down the road of a Third World country. This is the issue: what we’re going to do with the unemployed? Tell me if I’m wrong. CHUCK ROCHA: You’re exactly right, Ed.

Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Oprah Top Forbes 2010 Celebrity Power List

James Cameron, Sandra Bullock, Britney and Madonna also named most powerful celebs of 2010. By Gil Kaufman Lady Gaga Photo: Noel Vasquez/ Getty Images Lady Gaga has won a lot of accolades during the past year and met some pretty impressive dignitaries , but crashing the Forbes magazine annual World’s Most Powerful Celebrities list puts her in some truly rarified company. The singer, who launched her latest iteration of her never-ending Monster Ball Tour in Montreal on Monday night, debuts on the list this year at #4. She landed there thanks to high marks for her Web visibility (#1 on the list) and a $62 million haul between June 2009 and June 2010, $31 million of which came from touring (after a gross of $95 million), with much of the rest courtesy of deals with Virgin Mobile, Polaroid, Monster Cable and MAC. Gaga joins a top 10 that is dominated by women, including the once-again #1, Oprah Winfrey, who retook her top rank thanks to $315 million in earnings after ceding it last year to Angelina Jolie (now #18). The list ranks celebs based on earnings over the previous 12 months, as well as visibility in print, TV, radio, online and social media. Beyonc

Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner Dish On Her Culinary Skills

‘I get really embarrassed when people ask me what I cook, for some reason,’ ‘Eclipse’ star says. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Kristen Stewart attends a New York screening of “Eclipse” on Monday Photo: Dimitrios Kambouris/ WireImage Apparently, when Kristen Stewart isn’t making movies, visiting talk shows or dodging paparazzi, the actress is quite the foodie and budding chef. “I cooked dinner for 20 people; I was really proud of myself,” the 20-year-old told MTV News at the red carpet for a special screening of “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” in New York on Monday night. “I get really embarrassed when people ask me what I cook, for some reason,” she added. “I shouldn’t say that I cook anymore. There was like a big BBQ situation and, like, a bunch of steaks and veggies, and I made chicken piccata. I’m so embarrassed right now. But I made homemade marinara sauce starting at, like, 2 in the afternoon. It wasn’t done until 8. It was incredible. The ‘Twilight’ cast showed up.” But even though Taylor Lautner is a fan of Stewart’s cooking, he didn’t get an invitation to the big feast. Maybe it was a vampires-only meal? “I have sampled her food,” he said, when he heard about the dinner party. “I was not at the feast, Kristen. But I have tried her food.” Lautner may have missed out on her marinara sauce, but he did get to sample a more unusual dish Stewart whipped up. “Like, OK, you know kumquats? There’s apparently a fruit called loquats. Yeah, I didn’t know either. And she made a loquat pie.” What would you make for a “Twilight” dinner party? Tell us in the comments! Cambodia Sings

Today Shannon, Heather and I get back on the road and begin what will most likely be the most hectic and exciting three months of our lives. The last couple of weeks has given me more time to reflect on the world, what’s at stake in this election, and how proud I am of my family. Of course, I’m proud of my parents. I’m also very proud of my brothers, who are serving our country in the Armed Forces, and my sister, who is entering her senior year of high school and has so much to look forward to as she gets ready to begin a new chapter of her life. With that in mind, here’s the latest video from Shannon that chronicles our trip to Southeast Asia with Mom and highlights her inspiring devotion to charities that seek to ease the pain of those suffering across the globe. I am truly blessed. And, I want the world to know how much we appreciate our fans’ support. See you out on the trail!

West Virginia and Ohio

We started off the day at the famed Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia where Dad spoke to the University’s Thundering Herd football players during practice and even called some plays for the team. The drive to the campus was breathtaking and I played John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads” on the bus stereo system as we made our way to Huntington.  Our next stop was at a cabinet factory in Jackson, Ohio where we went on a tour and Dad held a press conference.  This afternoon, we stopped by a local fire station where Dad chatted with the firemen on duty and brought them some pizza.  We spent the entire day traveling by bus, rather than by plane; it’s my favorite way to experience the campaign trail because we’re able to see so many local sights and meet people along the way. On a much more serious note, we would like to give a “get well soon” shout out to our bus driver, Johnny, who recently underwent triple bypass surgery.  We want him to know that he’s in all of our thoughts and prayers and we hope he makes a speedy recovery! Song of the Day: “Take Me Home, Country Roads” by John Denver
