Amanda Bynes’ DUI Arrest: More Details Emerge

Actress’ dad tells People his daughter wasn’t drunk, while TMZ reports that Bynes returned to the bar after her arrest. By Kara Warner Amanda Bynes Photo: Handout/ Getty Images Amanda Bynes was arrested in Los Angeles last Friday on a misdemeanor driving under the influence charge after reportedly getting into a minor accident with a Los Angeles Police Department officer. The “Easy A” and “She’s the Man” actress has not yet released a statement on the incident, but Bynes’ father recently told People magazine that his daughter was not intoxicated at the time of her arrest. “She was not drunk,” Rick Bynes told the mag. “I was told that she blew a zero on the Breathalyzer. She didn’t have a single drink that night. My daughter doesn’t drink.” Poppa Bynes went on to say that the police officer who arrested his daughter was at fault because he pulled out in front of her as she was turning. He blamed the actress’ seemingly intoxicated behavior on her being “upset and very emotional” in getting arrested. According to TMZ , Bynes’ emotional state wasn’t so compromised that she couldn’t resume partying that same night. The site claims the actress and a few of her friends attempted to return to the bar at the Standard Hotel in Hollywood just hours after her arrest but were denied re-entrance by hotel staff. Bynes was given a citation and released from police custody on $5,000 bail. She will have to report to court when a hearing date is set. A few months before the release of “Easy A” in 2010, Bynes declared on Twitter that she didn’t enjoy performing anymore and planned to retire from acting. Her retirement lasted all of 35 days, as she tweeted in late July of 2010 that she was “unretired.” Amanda’s dad cited his daughter’s break from acting as the reason the tabloids go after her. “She is a good girl,” Rick Bynes told People. “She just chooses not to work, and because of that, people go after her.”

Bassnectar Calls Lupe Fiasco ‘Wicked’ On Vava Voom

With ninth album out Tuesday, Bassnectar tells MTV News he tries ‘to make all music thicker and heavier.’ By Akshay Bhansali Bassnectar Photo: Shaun Hollingsworth, Bassnectar With beginnings in death metal, Bassnectar (born Lorin Ashton) is so much more than that today, though metal is still clearly a large part of who he is. Besides catching his long air thrashing during his epic live shows, one need only listen to a couple of tracks on his latest album, Vava Voom — “Pennywise Tribute” and the album’s closer, “Chronological Outtakes” — to know his metal flag still flies high. Over nine albums, in a career that spans longer than a decade, fans have come to adore Bassnectar’s exceptionally diverse sonic palate. Of course, there has been one constant over the years: His desire to make every release heavier than the last. When MTV News caught up with Bassnectar in Miami recently, he shared, “Musically, I really focus on playing and making what I love, and I don’t let myself get bogged down with, ‘Is this the newest? Is this the freshest? Is this the most popular sound?’ “What I don’t want to do is impose rules on myself,” he continued. “I don’t like to think of myself as having one particular style. I just like to make all music thicker and heavier, whether it’s rock music or metal or punk or classical, downtempo, dubstep, whatever it is. I just like to take heaviness and apply it to forms of music.” On Vava Voom, out Tuesday, Bassnectar has continued his legacy of sonic exploration. “Ugly” and “Ping Pong” are bass whoppers. “Empathy” is sheer cinema, reminiscent of a lost “Tron Legacy” cut. “Do It Like This,” featuring his frequent collaborator friend ill.Gates, is almost an indescribably sumptuous mix of rock, hip-hop, glitches and wobbles. The album also features Amp Live, Jantsen, Mimi Page and Tina Malia. And then there’s the title track, featuring bars by rapper Lupe Fiasco. “That was one of the most interesting collaborations that I’ve had recently, partly because of the friendship I was able to make with him,” Bassnectar revealed. “Voom” is a Southern bass track with a pitched-down hook, similar to chopped and screwed with a scaling melody reminiscent of ’80s Atari games and early Neptunes production, before breaking into a dubstep-flavored ending. And Fiasco adds primo bars. “He’s a really creative person, and he rhymes fully improvisationally,” Bassnectar revealed. “So, he makes one sentence, and then you play back that sentence, and he comes up with another one. There’s two sentences, and then he says the third sentence. And then, basically, this crazy poem unfolds. It was wicked.” Bassnectar sold over 200,000 tickets on his U.S. tour last year, and with Vava Voom out Tuesday, he’s back on his tour grind through July, with demand for his live stage show greater than it’s ever been. “Last year, when we sold out Red Rocks, which is a 10,000 person venue, it happened a couple of weeks in advance. And I was speechless,” he shared. “This year, it sold out in one day. And after selling out in one day, we added a second show that’s going to sell out as well, so it’s just a stunning time.” Related Artists Lupe Fiasco Bassnectar

Fedde Le Grand Headlines Steampunk Cosmic Opera Act II

NYC EDM event also features Felix Cartal, Zedd, Funkagenda, aerialists and LED screens. By Akshay Bhansali Fedde Le Grand Photo: Andrew Rauner NEW YORK — Due to post-Miami-EDM fatigue, Thursday night’s Cosmic Opera Act II may have only been for New York’s super-committed dance music fans. With 1,500 or so tickets sold, though, for those in attendance, the high-concept Opera-meets-EDM party was an exceptional effort. Dubbed “Imbroglio,” the second Act of CO was set in a steampunk world, with the experience meant to evoke the fire, angst and turmoil that comes after two people first meet and fall in love. It was similar to the way that EDM and Opera did in February when Cosmic Opera debuted, featuring Swedish House Mafia’s Axwell as headliner. “There’s fire and gritty performances, and aerialists battling it out in a Thunderdome above the audience,” Cosmic Opera founder Justin Cohen told MTV News Friday (April 6). “We have this claw chandelier, it’s actually the heaviest chandelier in the world right now, and everything is moving, which goes along with that story of this is Imbroglio Act II. And now things are getting a bit crazier.” And crazier it did get, but in a uncontrived, cool way. Fire-wielding performers spit flames around the Opera’s organ-like DJ booth and stage-flanking runways. A unique 360-degree laser was featured in a spectacular light display. “Eyes Wide Shut”-esque masked performer couples ambled about the crowds, shifting from infatuation to clash and back. Forty-foot-high LED screens moved forward and backward, and the chandelier claw would descend down into the audience lined with lights. And Cohen and his team tapped a talent pool certainly capable of bringing an angsty, aggressive, hard-hitting audio experience to New York both nights in dBerrie, Funkagenda, Felix Cartal , Zedd and headliner Fedde Le Grand . Rising star Zedd continues to dazzle, and it’s worth noting that for being a nice, young, smallish (in size up there onstage) guy, he continues to lay down among the more explosive sets in dance music. And Thursday night was no exception. The venue’s six LED screens depicted flames, and five dancers in white wigs and silver attire hit the stages’ runways for Zedd’s Opera entrance number, with Zedd signaling with his hands, “Let’s do this.” And with that, his onslaught began: Fans chanted back Angger Dimas & Bassjackers’ “Ria.” Giant lengths of steam shot out into the crowd for Dada Life’s “Kick Out the Epic Motherf—er,” and the audience seemed in a frenzy for Knife Party’s whopping “Internet Friends.” After an electric set ended with a new song, and Zedd’s new mash-up of “Slam the Door” and buddy Skrillex’s “Cinema” (Zedd revealed to MTV News he calls it “Don’t Slam the Cinema”), he handed the baton over, literally via a performer, to Dutch house music star Fedde Le Grand , who headlined both nights of COII. A sumptuous violin solo performance led into Le Grand’s headlining organ-DJ booth, steam-punked out with pipes and a baritone saxophone. And then FLG began his set with a hearty remix of his hit “So Much Love” and followed with room-shaking hit after hit. Calvin Harris’ “Feel So Close,” Steve Angello’s “Knas,” Benny Benassi’s “House Music” and Arty’s “Around the World” were all part of his arsenal. But so were some stellar reworks. Steam shots drove the crowd mental when FLG dropped opening performer dBerrie’s remix of Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know.” An unknown bootleg of OneRepublic’s “Apologize” was masterful, as was a provocative “Leave the World Behind” vs. Eurythmics “Sweet Dreams.” After Fedde Le Grand’s two-hour closing set and a three-hour production breakdown, Cohen and his team readied Friday night’s final showing of Cosmic Opera Act II, which will see the Felix Cartal join in the festivities. Nari & Milani Lead For Miami Music Week Track Of The Week

While ‘Atom’ currently tops list, Porter Robinson and Martin Solveig weigh in on Bingo Players’ ‘awesome’ ‘Rattle.’ By Akshay Bhansali Photo: Opium Group After a weekend showdown that saw Knife Party fans edging “Internet Friends” just past initial leaders Nari & Milani , “Atom” fans have reclaimed the lead again in the Miami Music Week Track of the Week competition. Steve Angello must certainly be proud: Not only is a song from his Size Records label, slated for release later this week, in the lead, but Swedish House Mafia’s “Greyhound” currently has just under 15 percent of your votes and is holding firm at #3. Of course, the most popular song to come out of Miami is the topic of much discussion, for fans and artists alike, and MTV News was lucky enough to bump into a couple of your favorite EDM stars to have them weigh in. ” ‘Rattle,’ by Bingo Players , everyone is playing it,” Porter Robinson told MTV News in Miami. “I’m playing it as well. And this is by no means a criticism. These songs are getting played out so frequently because they have merit and because they are awesome.” “I heard the Bingo Players track ‘Rattle’ a lot!” Martin Solveig revealed to MTV News recently. “And it’s just an instrumental so it’s interesting, and it’s coming from artists that don’t have the exposure of the Swedes or David [Guetta].” Well, these two clearly have their favorite picked, but you the fans have until Thursday at midnight to cast your final vote for who wins Miami Music Week Track of the Week! Madonna Introduces ‘Amazing’ Avicii On Day Two Of Ultra Music Fest

MDNA superstar makes first UMF appearance as Swedish house producer cements status as an EDM standout with headlining gig. By Akshay Bhansali Avicii and Madonna perform at UMF on Saturday Photo: Getty Images MIAMI — Swedish house music producer Avicii is currently one of the most popular artists working in music — yes, in music, not just his native EDM. And that star standing was only reinforced on Saturday night when he headlined a gig on day two of this year’s Ultra Music Festival . Avicii (born Tim Bergling) packed in every hit he could into his closing set on Ultra’s Main Stage. “Fade into Darkness” had tens of thousands of Miami fans chanting back the song’s catchy hook, as did his “Silhouettes” and Mark Knight’s remix of Florence and the Machine’s “You’ve Got the Love.” Every hand was stretched sky-high in a version of air piano when the DJ/producer’s now-familiar chord progressions on the anthemic “Levels” filled the stage; they stayed up for his collabo with rising star Nicky Romero , “NicTim.” Plus, the main-stage set looked as good as it sounded thanks to the work of visual designer Vello Virkhaus . Fireworks and sublime, smoky lighting textures added to the ambience. But to really understand just how big of a deal Avicii’s show was we have to take you back to the top of his set. As fans pushed closer to the stage — with virtually every square foot at UMF occupied, some resorted to climbing up into trees for a view — the set went dark and a taped segment featuring will.i.am, David Guetta , Afrojack, Carl Cox and Avicii came on. Each artist remarked on how popular dance music has become as Madonna’s “Music” played in the background; the clip appeared to be an excerpt from the brand-new UMF film “Can You Feel It?” Toward the end of the segment, Avicii praised Madonna for using EDM beats in her past work. It then cut to Madge extolling the power of live music. Just as it began to occur to the crowd that Madonna might actually be at Ultra, there she was, striding to the front of the stage. “Hello, everybody, I’ve finally made it to Ultra Music Festival,” she said. “I’ve been here in spirit for many years, but it’s good to be here, finally. In my world, music and dance are not separate,” she continued. “Electronic music has been a part of my career since I started, and I can honestly say, ‘A DJ saved my life.’ “How many people in this crowd have seen Molly?” she then asked with a coy smile, making a reference to the drug MDMA, which not only had the crowd roaring back at the nod to rave culture, but also happens to be a thinly veiled wink at her new MDNA album title . “Are you ready to dance? Are you ready to sweat? Are you ready to make some noise, mother—-ers?! This next DJ is amazing! Get ready for Avicii!” With that, the lights came up on Avicii at the decks. Madonna then glided into the DJ booth to rock out with Bergling to her latest single, “Girl Gone Wild.” She stayed for the duration of the song, smiling, singing along and laughing with Avicii. Of course, Madonna has always been a friend of EDM. After success working with the likes of William Orbit, Paul Oakenfold and Stuart Price (a.k.a. Jacques Lu Cont), she paid homage again to the club culture she loves over the weekend. (She even teamed up again with Orbit on MDNA, due out on Monday.) Two things were crystal at the conclusion of Saturday night’s festivities: EDM fans are ecstatic Madonna has come full circle in her career, and considering the pop queen’s co-sign, Avicii’s star has never been brighter. Ultra Music Festival’s ‘Best Of Bass’ Pre-Party: Smog Vs. Basshead

Miami’s Mekka hosts 12th Planet, Pendulum, Drop the Lime and more. By Akshay Bhansali 12th Planet Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/ Getty Images MIAMI — Nestled in a series of rooms at Mekka downtown, Smog vs. Basshead, a party conceived by bass-music champions from L.A. and Miami, on Thursday night again realized a frenzied hands-in-the-air steamfest. For the third year in a row, hundreds of partygoers screamed their lungs out, pumping their arms to the warbles and drum and bass. For all the talk of dubstep and drum and bass being mostly underground, judging by the event’s attendance, the genre is booming — and pioneers like 12th Planet (born John Dadzie), a 13-year California bass veteran and Smog label head, couldn’t be prouder. “It started off as a party at the White Room, and Basshead is a label based out of Miami,” 12th explained to MTV News after his set. “The label actually put out my first dubstep release, so we were kind of always routed together, and we just decided to join forces because, being from California, it’s hard to break into other markets. “We got the opportunity to work in Miami, and the first show was a hit. And the second show, last year, was the biggest Smog vs. Basshead. And then this year, just as many people. So, I’m totally excited — totally stoked.” The world SVB creates bears a comparison to the large-scale EDM event taking place a few blocks away. While the bass get-together might not reach the scale of the Ultra Music Festival , a variety of artists gathered for a series of fiery performances, taking fans into day-break. “It’s just five room of bass — straight up!” 12th proclaimed. SVB featured 16bit, Noah D, Flinch, Jaun Basshead and more. U.K. bass aggregator, feeder and video-sharing community UKF boasted a Pendulum DJ set, Zeds Dead and Kaon Sound. The Trouble & Bass room had Drop the Lime, AC Slater and Toddla T. The Metalheadz room was headlined by Goldie & Bailey. “All these guys making great, great music. We even had Foreign Beggars come down,” 12th said about his former tourmates, an electronic hip-hop collective that recently caught the eye of deadmau5. “They’ve never even played in Florida. I think that is the appeal of this party: You are going to hear the best of bass music.” Miami Music Week is going down, and MTV News is on the ground!
