Swedish House Mafia Focus On Future Releases, Expanding Tour

Trio parts ways with annual Pacha Ibiza residency in 2012. By Adam Stewart, with additional reporting by Akshay Bhansali Swedish House Mafia Photo: MTV News There’s a good chance your ears are still ringing from Swedish House Mafia ‘s takeover of Madison Square Garden , which was streamed live, over the weekend, but now that New York is back to normal and you’ve had a chance to watch the “Antidote” video a hundred times, it’s safe to say that Swedish House Mafia fans the world over are anxiously awaiting what’s next from the rock stars of house music. After months of rumors and chatter on studio work, MTV News sat down with the boys to see just what their plan of attack for 2012 and beyond really is. “There’s stuff in the works,” Steve Angello said. “Obviously, we always have stuff in the works .” “But there’s something that’s really close,” Axwell teased. Whether that means an album or the formal release what’s being dubbed “Inks” (which is rumored to be the new SHM single and debuted as the MSG opener on Friday), any chatter of fresh SHM tunes is certainly welcome news to their loyal following. But SHM admit they aren’t sure what form any of their releases will take. “We haven’t decided yet,” Angello admitted. “We would like to obviously present something, more of a fuller experience,” Axwell added. “[But] we still have to be together in the studio to finish it,” Angello continued. Even though “Save the World,” their remix of Coldplay’s “Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall” and “Antidote” have unequivocally pacified the masses, it is perfectly clear that everyone wants more. “We really are focusing on getting together and finishing stuff,” Axwell said. “We kind of cleared our schedules a bit and [are making] fairly clever decisions of when we are doing a tour — let’s rent a villa, let’s put in a studio, let’s work! Those kind of things.” Part of that focus includes parting ways with their now-legendary, Monday night gig at Pacha Ibiza, where for three years, they held residencies with The Dark Forest and most recently Masquerade Motel — both were must-sees for anyone’s visiting the Balearic shores. “This coming year we’ll probably do more shows,” Angello explained. “But it will be more spread out. Seventeen shows in Ibiza might be 17 shows around the world instead, which I would prefer now because — it’s a big world.” A world that’s actually become a lot smaller in a sense thanks in large part to SHM courting the masses into one big EDM family. In all likelihood, this coming year, the Mafia will continue charting new territories and pushing the boundaries, all the while making us smile. “You’ve seen how we work through the years,” Angello said. “It’s just growing and growing and growing — and we’re gonna grow some more — and hopefully Axwell is gonna grow a beard!” “I’m trying!” Axwell laughed “Mustache is not a problem. It’s the rest of the beard that’s a problem. It’s called a ‘model’s’ beard. I prefer to call it that. I have a model’s beard.” What tunes are you looking forward to Steve, Ax and Seb releasing? Skrillex Is MTV’s EDM Artist Of 2011!

DJ/producer cements his breakthrough year with five Grammy nominations, including Best New Artist. By Akshay Bhansali Skrillex Photo: Getty Images Back in late 2010, EDM superstar DJ/producer deadmau5 told MTV News a star was on the rise. He said his friend and former post-hardcore/emo rocker Sonny Moore — producing and performing under the name Skrillex — was going to be a force to be reckoned with. “He’s taking over — I think he’s going to outdo me,” deadmau5 told MTV News at the time. “I think he’s going to be the first artist on Beatport to eat my lunch and take over the top 10. I don’t think anyone in Beatport history has ever done it, but if he does it, I’ll be so proud of him, the little goblin!” Now, the ever-prophetic ‘mau5 has more to be proud of. A lot more. In our Best Electronic Dance Music Artists of 2011 coverage, MTV’s roundtable has named Skrillex the #1 EDM Artist of 2011, underscored by his most recent series of accolades: He scored a whopping five Grammy nominations, including being the first DJ to land a Best New Artist nod. Indeed, Moore’s musical background — both on his own and as a member of his former group, From First to Last — has carried over into Skrillex’s brand of fiery electronica. Skrillex has garnered an audience the world over that includes ravers, house heads and rockers alike. In today’s laptop generation of music, Skrillex is the new “rock.” From his remix of Benny Benassi and Gary Go’s “Cinema” to the recent Avicii pop song “Le7els” (not officially released yet), Skrillex dropped massive re-workings in ’11, in addition to his More Monsters and Sprites EP. He scored video games, produced records for Korn, launched his own OWSLA label and hit almost every major festival in the States, including Coachella and Lollapalooza. An exceptional catalog of releases coupled with an incessant touring schedule has made Skrillex the biggest EDM star of the year. In 2012, he plans to tour 322 of the 365 days. While he didn’t expect to become recognized as this year’s biggest success story, Skrillex’s peers say the swell of critical and fan support is fitting. “He definitely deserves it,” former OWSLA tourmate, DJ/producer Porter Robinson, told MTV News. “I’ve been saying it all year: He’s the most influential musician of this year, in any genre. Incredible sound designer. Incredible songwriter. Amazing performer.” “He’s been in bands before,” EDM artist and collaborator Sofi told us. “He’s an excellent songwriter. He can sing. He’s just so versatile that I think that comes through in his music. He kind of brought this ‘rock,’ ‘raw’ element into electronic music. He’s the punk rock of the new generation.” Even industry veteran David Guetta, who lands at #2 on our list of the Best EDM Artists of 2011, agreed with all the praise heaped on Skrillex. “He’s extremely talented, and I’m very happy for him,” Guetta said of Skrill’s Grammy noms. “It’s a statement: I think it’s really good that an artist from our community is nominated just as ‘an artist.’ Not as a ‘dance’ artist, you know? I think that it’s good that [our] music is now getting the attention and the respect that all the other styles of music, like hip-hop, are getting.” MTV will reveal the best artists, songs and movies of the year. Eve Is A ‘Genius,’ Says ‘Get Em’ Collaborator Wolfgang Gartner

‘This was meant to be,’ Gartner tells MTV News of their collaboration. By Akshay Bhansali Eve Photo: Dimitrios Kambouris/ WireImage When MTV News caught up with rapper Eve and famed electronic dance music DJ/ producer , they were full of compliments for each other. The two collaborated on “Get Em,” the latest single from Gartner’s new album, Weekend in America, which dropped on Tuesday. “She’s a genius,” gushed Gartner, who was born Joey Youngman. “The only two people on this album that I actually worked with in person were Eve and will.i.am. And I would say the same thing about both of them: that they are musical and lyrical geniuses. “The hook that she wrote for this song, there is something that can’t really be put into words about it,” he continued. “I’ve compared it to Sugar Hill Gang before. It’s just got this old-school innocent-chant catchiness to it.” When MTV News’ Sway caught up with Eve, she too spoke very highly of working with Gartner. “I think he’s great,” Eve said. “What’s crazy is that I had just finished doing a record with him, but I had never seen him perform. So I wrote the first verse to the record and felt like I needed to see him perform to finish the record because I don’t know that world. So after I saw him perform I was like, ‘Whoa, that’s a whole other world.’ I think he’s great. In his lane he does amazing work. So I’m happy to be a part of that movement.” In fact, Gartner has roped in quite a few hip-hop collaborators for Weekend, including will.i.am, Omarion and Cam’ron and Jim Jones. But observing Eve do her thing in the studio appeared to be extra-special for Gartner, who plans to shoot a video for “Get Em.” “In the studio with her, just the way that she starts throwing out ideas and the way that stuff comes to her — they were things that obviously I would never think of, but I’m not a lyricist, so my mind doesn’t work that way,” Gartner said. “But the way that she wrote this song over the music, it flows with the song. The words work with the rhythm. It just forms one cohesive sound. “Whereas you hear a lot of dance rap tracks and it’s like they wrote a rap and threw it over somebody else’s beat, she wrote this thing to work with it and get embedded into it,” he continued. “She was obviously feeling the beat. This was meant to be. These two things were meant to be together.” Related Videos Wolfgang Gartner: The ‘Weekend’ Trip Related Artists Wolfgang Gartner Eve

Eve, Diplomats Turn Out For Wolfgang Gartner’s Weekend in America

‘I could go on and on with what I feel for hip-hop,’ the dance music producer tells MTV News of roping in all-star rap features on new album. By Akshay Bhansali Eve Photo: Jason LaVeris/ FilmMagic After a stint in Texas, electronic dance music producer Wolfgang Gartner moved back to his native California, where resumed recording in a new studio. Now that he’s all settled in, Gartner’s got a treat for his fans too: a band-new album that boasts so much hip-hop star power he may become to rap what superstar EDM producer David Guetta is to pop. But longtime fans of Gartner that have been devoted to him for hits like “Undertaker” and “Animal Rights” need not worry: Even with the big collabos, the Wolfgang product sounds no less underground. Weekend in America, which dropped on Tuesday (September 20), features 11 tracks. Thematically, it’s an effort borne of “life on the tour,” according to Grammy-nominated Gartner . “There is definitely a sense of patriotism there,” Gartner (born Joey Youngman) told MTV News recently. ” ‘Illmerica,’ the track came far before I knew the album was going to be called Weekend in America. Once [‘Illmerica’] became a song, I started having these mental images of when you’re flying over the center of the U.S., you see the little houses and you see America. “And for some reason, that’s what this song made me see: the soul of America, which is the bad part and the good part and all of the messed up stuff and the good stuff combined,” the producer continued. “For some reason, that’s just how it made me feel. ” Weekend in America was more alluding to going out on the weekends playing these shows, [where] I’m playing these tracks that I’ve been making. I’m playing other people’s tracks, too, but it’s kind of a culmination of what I see and what I hear out there that influenced the making of this album.” Even before its official release, America tracks like “Space Junk,” “Menage a Trois,” and “818” have already taken off as singles on the EDM scene. But with Tuesday’s album release, Gartner emphasizes what his hard-core fans already knew: He’s got a serious love for hip-hop. Rap princess Eve is featured on the party-hard “Get Em.” Dipset’s Cam’ron and Jim Jones jump on “Circus Freaks.” Omarion belts on “Still My Baby” and as WG fans know, will.i.am gets busy on “Forever,” which was released earlier this year. “I definitely listen to hip-hop more than I listen to dance music,” Gartner confessed to us. “When I’m in my car, all I listen to is rap. Obviously, I’m really into the Dipset crew — that’s like half my playlist right now, the new Jim Jones album. I listen to a lot of old Snoop and West Coast. A lot of old Biggie and the classics. Kanye. I really like Drake, Lil Wayne, that whole [YMCMB] crew. I could go on and on with what I feel for hip-hop.” Of course, with that many hip-hop features on tap, many will draws comparisons to Guetta’s pop crossover success, which has helped to bridge the dance and mainstream music worlds. But while their styles may be different, it’s a comparison Gartner welcomes. “David Guetta has been instrumental in creating the climate that we have now, where I can work with Eve and I can work with will.i.am, and they are receptive, the public is receptive and radio is receptive,” Gartner explained. “He played a role in opening the door up for people like me to do the same thing and have success. I think the dance music community, including myself, owes something to him for sort of paving the way for that.” Weekend in America is available at Beatport.com Next up for Gartner is the video for “Get Em,” with Eve. EDM artists hope to collaborate with each other on their down time between cities. By Akshay Bhansali Kaskade Photo: David Rojas/ FilmMagic America’s first touring electronic dance music fest, the Identity Festival , officially launched in Noblesville, Indiana, on Thursday, and the crowd was treated to sets from the likes of Kaskade , Steve Lawler, Chuckie, Steve Aoki , LA Riots, Manufactured Superstars and many more. And from the looks of it, the fans that came out to the Verizon Wireless Music Center were giving the artists as much energy as they were receiving. “INDIANAPOLIS ravin it up in the cornfields, awesome…& thank you!” tweeted Kaskade. “indiana i love u…. thanks for the fun first show for @identityfest my first time with my live show!” Steve Aoki wrote. Producer Rusko tweeted : “Indiana was crazee fun. Tons of bouncing and singing along as the sun went down. Maximum energy!!” And Chuckie sent a message to MTV News saying, “Indiana was epic! Was the perfect start to this crazy ride!! Lesss goooo!” N.E.R.D.’s Chad Hugo, Afrojack, Nervo, Avicii, Skrillex, Pete Tong, Nero and Britney’s Femme Fatale Tour openers Jessie and the Boy Toys are also among the featured artists that will be performing at dates on the tour. In addition to getting big names in the EDM world out to previously underserved markets, the festival also offers the prospect of some of the scene’s stars using the tour as a chance to collaborate with each other. Clearly, Steve Aoki already has big plans for the road. “On the bus, I’m outfitting it with my own studio,” he recently told MTV News. “I’m rigging my monitors. So it’s gonna be a productive month.” And the other creative minds on this tour all seem to be in tune. “Something tells me the Steve Aoki bus is gonna be a fun bus to be on!” Liv Nervo told MTV News. “And the Manufactured Superstars! We’ll definitely be crashing their buses.” “I’m really looking forward to hanging out with these guys,” Kaskade said. “Everyone from Skrillex to Rusko to Avicii. I’ve never really hung out with Avicii. “I mean we got some downtime,” Kaskade continued. “It’ll be like, knock knock. ‘Hey Avicii, I got this melody. Britney Spears’ Tourmates Nervo Tease New ‘Club Records’

Aussie twins tell MTV News they haven’t strayed from dance music roots in spite of ‘amazing’ Femme Fatale Tour experience. By Akshay Bhansali Nervo Photo: Michael Buckner/ Getty Images With Britney Spears ‘ flashy Femme Fatale Tour closing out its remaining North American dates later this month, it’s fair to say that many of Ms. Spears’ concert-going fans have gotten to know Olivia and Miriam Nervo pretty well. In fact, when Brit first announced her Femme Fatale lineup back in April, promising on her website, “Nervo will get everyone on the dancefloor,” dance music fans were ecstatic about the inclusion of the DJ/producer twins whose writing credits include a song for Spears and David Guetta and Kelly Rowland’s “When Love Takes Over.” MTV News recently caught up with the Australian sisters (and former models), and they told us that bussing across the States and sharing the stage with Nicki Minaj, Jessie and the Toy Boys, and Brit herself, has been a stellar opportunity. “We’ve definitely seen both the girls, [Britney and Nicki], and we interact with them,” Miriam, a.k.a. Mim, told us. “You are traveling to each city and you see the same people every day and it really becomes a family. So it’s been an amazing experience.” “It’s an amazing show,” Liv added. “The girls, the lineup really works well together. You’ve got Britney, who I think is looking the best she’s looked in a really long time and who really gives it her all on this tour. And then you’ve got Nicki, who definitely brings her edge to it. I’d never seen Nicki live, and I’m just so blown away. The girl can sing, rap — total respect to her!” As the Femme Fatale Tour winds down Stateside before heading to Europe, Nervo are now looking to expand the fanbase they’ve built in the U.S. But while Liv and Mim have been a part of what might be considered the mother of all pop music tours, the duo insist that they intend to remain true to their dance music and DJ roots. “When we signed the record deal, it was really important to us that we could take our DJing seriously and release club records,” Liv explained of their Astralwerks label. “Yeah, we want to be DJ artists,” Mim added. “That’s what we love so, luckily, we can release some club records alongside our Astralwerks album,” Liv said. “It just so happens that the Astralwerks single that we’re coming out with is with two major club guys: Afrojack and Steve Aoki . It’s called ‘We’re All No One.’ We love it!” While Liv and Mim do the singing on “No One,” the beats are delivered by hard-hitting EDM producer Aoki and David Guetta prot
