Exclusive: Swedish House Mafia Unleash Zedd’s ‘Save The World’ Remix

Sebastian Ingrosso, Steve Angello and Axwell tap rising star Zedd for a remix of their current single. By Akshay Bhansali Swedish House Mafia Photo: Kevork Djansezian/ Getty Images Fans of Swedish House Mafia know the holy trinity of house — Sebastian Ingrosso, Axwell and Steve Angello — as not only superstar DJ/producers in their own right, but also as tastemakers in the music business, launching impressive young talent into a completely different stratosphere. In Miami, at their Masquerade Motel: One Night Stand party in March, Swedish House Mafia debuted the epic “Nillionaire” by rising electronic dance music star Alesso (signed to Ingrosso’s label, Refune), who has since gone on to have tremendous Beatport.com chart success with his “Pressure” remix (originally by Nadia Ali, Alex Kenji and Starkillers) and his remix of SHM’s latest single, “Save the World.” Now, they introduce you to Zedd , a.k.a. Anton Zaslavski. Hailing from Kaiserslautern, Germany, the 21-year-old Zedd comes from a family of musicians (his father was in several bands and played classical guitar and his mother taught him how to play piano) and began producing electronic dance music in 2009, though he also plays in a metal band called Dioramic. He began receiving EDM acclaim after winning two Beatport.com remix competitions and has had dance charting success with his singles “Autonomy,” “The Legend of Zelda” and “Anthem.” Zedd has also collabed on mixes for a few folks you may know: Lady Gaga, Black Eyed Peas, Diddy and dubstep star Skrillex. The three Swedes are unleashing Zedd’s new mix of their hit single “Save the World,” an electro house banger that has been making it into superstar DJ sets and gathering nods from some of the biggest acts in dance music. “Respect to mister @zedd for his killer Save the world tonight remix, thats the one you’ve been waiting for!” Afrojack tweeted recently. MTV News has the exclusive premiere: Stream “Save the World” (Zedd Remix) in the player above. The song will be made available for purchase in the next two weeks. David Guetta ‘Honored’ To Have Rihanna On ‘Who’s That Chick’

‘I saw her again and she was like, ‘That record is stuck in my head!’ ‘ producer tells MTV News about infectious club hit. By Akshay Bhansali David Guetta Photo: MTV News David Guetta has made himself at home on the U.S. charts, teaming up with a long list of heavyweight collaborating partners that includes the Black Eyed Peas, Madonna, Lil Wayne, Taio Cruz and Flo Rida. The electronic dance-music producer recently added Rihanna to that list, and he spoke to MTV News about their collabo, “Who’s That Chick.” Guetta originally produced the track for Rihanna’s return-to-pop/R&B album, Loud. But when it didn’t make the final cut, Guetta decided to release “Who’s That Chick” on his own, with the Barbados singer featuring. After just three weeks on the Billboard Dance/Club Play Songs chart, “Chick” is sitting at #3, and at #51 on the Hot 100. And given that the song almost didn’t happen, it’s an impressive feat. “Bu, which is Akon’s brother, was doing the A&R on the new album for Rihanna [and] came to me and asked me for some tracks,” Guetta recalled during a sit-down with MTV News on Wednesday. “And I was feeling terrible because I’m such a huge fan but I didn’t have any beats that would fit. I just didn’t have any ideas. Sometimes two artists wanna work together, but it doesn’t mean it’s gonna happen, because you have to find the right idea.” Luckily, Guetta was able to overcome his temporary beatmakers’ block. “I came up with the idea for the song for ‘Who’s That Chick,’ and I said, ‘That’s it. It’s perfect!’ ” Guetta continued. “I went to see her in London; she was having a concert. And just before the concert, I went to see her backstage and I played her the record and she was like, ‘Yeah, I like it.’ But I think she was doubting it a little bit. And then after the concert, I saw her again and she was like, ‘That record is stuck in my head!’ And I was like, ‘OK, let’s do it!’ Finally, which is really amazing for me, we did it as ‘David Guetta featuring Rihanna.’ It’s a great honor for me.” Remixes of the club jam are now available digitally, including additional edits and mixes by Adam F, Afrojack and Guetta. Fans can also look forward to not one, but two music videos for Guetta’s “Who’s That Chick,” which have been shot and will drop in the next few weeks. (Stick with MTV News as we serve up more details.) Meanwhile, Guetta’s greatest hits album, One More Love, is due on Tuesday and includes the Rihanna-assisted banger. Afrojack Talks His Part In Chris Brown’s ‘Look At Me Now’

Dutch dance producer tells MTV News how he contributed to C. Breezy’s Lil Wayne, Busta Rhymes, Diplo collabo. By Akshay Bhansali Afrojack in an MTV News Skype interview Photo: MTV News Afrojack already had reason to celebrate as he headed into the New Year. The Dutch dance-music producer’s pop-dance single “Take Over Control,” featuring singer Eva Simons, made the top 25 on Billboard ‘s Dance/Club Play Songs chart in December. And now his second U.S. release, packed with hip-hop heavy-hitters, seems primed for chart success. MTV News caught up with the EDM producer (born Nick van de Wall) for a skype chat last week, and he talked about his contribution to Chris Brown’s “Look at Me Now,” the latest offering from the singer’s upcoming F.A.M.E. album. The track is a fast-rapping flurry of awesome self-indulgence courtesy of Busta Rhymes, Lil Wayne and Chris, with an eerie downtempo beat cooked up by chefs Afrojack and Diplo. The pair of producers previously collaborated on “Pon De floor,” off Diplo’s Major Lazer full-length release, and according to Afrojack, “Look at Me Now” is the product of a beat he’d passed along to the Philadelphia beatsmith. “Yeah, Diplo called me,” Afrojack recalled. “He was like, ‘We are in the studio right now, and we are gonna do a track on the beat.’ And I was like, ‘OK, whatever. Have fun.’ ” Eventually, “Look at Me Now,” was born. While Afrojack sounded casual about the song’s evolution, he said he’s certainly pleased with the finished product. “I just love these kind of people on a track like this,” he said. “It’s like hip-hop, but really weird kind of hip-hop. “Busta’s verse on it is really sick,” he continued. “It’s like I can’t even hear what he said, but I love the part where he goes [ mimics Busta’s rapid flow ], and then pauses and goes rapping really quickly. And I don’t know how to do it, I don’t even try. But it was really, really cool.” So what’s next for Afrojack? Apart from working on a remix for Pitbull , he premiered a new single exclusively for MTV News that we will be sharing with you very soon. All you Afrojack fans stay tuned! Magnolia Shorty Mourned By Lil Wayne, B.G., More At New Orleans Funeral

Fans and supporters gather outside Fifth African Baptist Church to honor late Cash Money MC. By Gil Kaufman, with additional reporting by Akshay Bhansali Renetta “Magnolia Shorty” Lowe Photo: Akshay Bhansali / MTV News As fellow Cash Money affiliates Lil Wayne, B.G., Juvenile, Mack Maine and Baby made their way into the Fifth African Baptist Church in New Orleans on Thursday morning (December 30), hundreds of fans gathered outside the church to pay tribute to fallen hometown rapper Magnolia Shorty . In addition to Weezy and his crew, a number of other local bounce artists made their presence felt at the funeral, including Partners-N-Crime, Kilo G, DJ Jubilee, Big Freeda and Ms. Tee, who was the first female artist to sign with Cash Money, followed by Shorty in 1995, who was the label’s second, and last, female member. The closed funeral began at 11 a.m., and while more than 1,000 friends and relatives packed into the brick house of worship, the street outside was overflowing with nearly 1,500 fans paying tribute to the bounce legend. Many were wearing shirts in praise of Shorty (born Renetta Lowe), 28, with messages such as “R.I.P. Magnolia Shorty” and “We Love You Renetta,” as well as buttons that read “Forever ‘Shorty.’ ” Wayne, Birdman and Mack Maine tweeted their condolences in the wake of Shorty’s murder last week, but on Thursday, it was former Cash Money rapper and Hot Boyz member B.G. who remembered his fallen comrade after the funeral. “Magnolia Shorty was like a sister to me and it ain’t just what she meant to me; it’s what she meant to Louisiana, it’s what she meant to New Orleans,” B.G. told MTV News, noting that he was the one who brought Shorty into the Cash Money fold when she was just 12 years old. “She was the queen of bounce. She was someone you loved to be around. She was the best at what she do. I’m really speechless right now, but it ain’t sunk in yet. … She owned this city, but she was this close to ownin’ the world.” The program for the service featured a photo of Shorty under the headline “A Homegoing Celebration for a Phenomenal Queen.” Shorty was gunned down last Monday alongside an unidentified man in a vehicle that crashed near a New Orleans East housing complex. Her murder came seven years after the November 2003 killing of another New Orleans rapper, James “Soulja Slim” Tapp, whose original stage name was Magnolia Slim and who grew up with Shorty in the Magnolia housing projects and gave her the Magnolia Shorty stage name. The funeral was to be followed by a traditional New Orleans second line celebration in which her casket was be paraded down the street accompanied by musicians, friends, family and supporters. Wolfgang Gartner Calls Grammy Nomination ‘A Total Surprise’

DJ/producer is readying a new album and his first official music video. By Akshay Bhansali Wolfgang Gartner Photo: MTV News After an impressive year boasting strong singles “Conscindo” (with Mark Knight), “Undertaker” and “Animal Rights” (with deadmau5) , Austin, Texas, electro-house maestro Wolfgang Gartner was particularly ecstatic when we caught up with him this week. Gartner, born Joey Youngman, is nominated for a 2011 Grammy in the Best Remixed Recording (Non Classical) category for his mix of house-music producer Andy Caldwell’s “Funk Nasty” (featuring vocals by Gram’ma Funk). In February, he will face off against Morgan Page’s remix of Nadia Ali’s “Fantasy,” David Guetta’s mix of Madonna’s “Revolver,” Mike Rizzo’s mix of Brazilian legend Sergio Medes’ “Orpheus” and the Dirty South and Axwell mix of Temper Trap’s “Sweet Disposition.” “It was a total surprise to me,” Gartner said. “I didn’t even know that it was Grammy nomination time. Somebody on Twitter said, ‘Congratulations on your Grammy nomination,’ and I ran over to my computer and looked on the site, and there it was. Yeah, it’s awesome. Obviously, it’s a milestone to be nominated for a Grammy, especially [with] other nominees I have so much respect for.” While the Grammy nod caps an already-colossal year for the DJ/producer, Gartner isn’t planning to slow down. Next week, he drops Space Junk, a 12-track studio effort full of typically sinister, melody-driven electro-house bangers along with some new sounds. “The response has been great,” he said of Space Junk. “We sent out the promos. I know a bunch of people are playing it so far: Ti

Nicki Minaj Told Jay Sean She Was ‘Going In’ On ‘2012’

Young Money rapper is uniquely ‘fun and playful’ on the track, British crooner tells MTV News. By Akshay Bhansali Nicki Minaj Photo: Taylor Hill/ Getty Images It will come as no surprise to fans of Jay Sean that his new single, “2012 (It Ain’t the End),” boasts bars by Young Money princess Nicki Minaj. After all, his U.S. debut single, “Down,” features Lil Wayne , which was followed by Lil Jon and Sean Paul jumping on “Do You Remember.” Still, the Hounslow hero (Jay Sean was born near the Wimbledon site in West London) was pleasantly surprised to get a phone call from Miss Minaj earlier this year. “It was actually a surprise for me,” Sean told MTV News last week. “Nicki Minaj heard [‘2012’], she called me and … she was like, ‘I love it! It’s sick. I’m going in on this!’ “I’m a fan of Nicki’s. I think she’s incredible,” he continued. “And I had wanted to work with her for a while. But when she picked this song out herself, I was like, ‘Go ahead. Bless it. Please.’ ” Nicki Minaj is one of the most successful hip-hop artists at the moment, all before her debut album is released. And Jay Sean is pleased not only because her feature in “2012” brings the gravity of her presence, but that she attacked the song with a swagger different from her usual form. “A testament to a great artist is the fact that they are able to interpret the song for what it is,” Sean said. “Now, Nicki is a rapper. This is a pop record. She took the message of having fun and enjoying yourself, living like it’s the end, living every minute like it’s the last, and she put that vibe and that swagger on the track … and that voice is fun and playful on it. It was great.” Minaj also appears in the video for “2012” , which was shot last month in Los Angeles. Jay Sean’s sophomore U.S. effort, Freeze Time, is tentatively set for a November 2 release. Jonas Brothers Challenge Yankees, Kings Of Leon To Baseball Game

Before their Chicago tour kickoff, the guys pick their dream rivals for a Road Dogs game. By Jocelyn Vena Jonas Brothers get ready to kick off another Road Dogs season in Chicago Photo: Akshay Bhansali CHICAGO — On Friday (August 6), the Jonas Brothers kicked off another Road Dogs season on the eve of their big tour kickoff . They were not only there to pursue their love of all things baseball, but also to shed light on a cause they needs more attention. “We’re a part of the X the Text campaign with our sponsor Allstate, which is an amazing thing,” Kevin Jonas told MTV News only minutes before taking the field. “So many teen drivers and drivers out there have accidents texting while driving, and it’s such a [great] thing to bring awareness to this.” While this particular game was for a good cause, the guys had a few suggestions for who they’d like to see on the field at a future Road Dogs game to challenge the brothers, the band and their crew to a game. “The Yankees,” Kevin said. Nick added: “I think it’d be fun. I think the Yankees would be a challenge.” With a professional sports team chosen as a possible contender, the guys also nailed down a band they could see themselves playing against. “Kings of Leon,” Kevin said. “We challenge Kings of Leon to a game of softball. That’d be rad. They’re some Southern boys. I bet you they play some baseball.” While the guys had a good time on the field, they weren’t victorious. “Road Dogs played well,” Joe tweeted after the game. “We lost. 14-12 Next time we win.” Nick tweeted that, despite his performance, the guys couldn’t sail to victory. “We lost… But we played well. Final score 14-12,” he wrote. “We’ll get them next time. I hit a home run that was cool!” Who would you like to see out on the field against the Jonas Brothers? Share your ideas in the comments!
