Kaskade And Dragonette Vocalist Team Up For ‘Fire In Your New Shoes’

‘I wanted somebody who was on the pop-electro sound already,’ Kaskade says of choosing Martina Sorbara as his collaborator. By Akshay Bhansali Kaskade Photo: MTV News Earlier this year, progressive house-music producer Ryan Raddon — known to his fans around the world as Kaskade — found himself body-checking pop-music goliaths when his album Dynasty debuted at #5 on the iTunes album download charts, knocking Justin Bieber out of the top 10 that week. The album spent three consecutive weeks in the top 10, an indicator of popular music’s current appetite for faster beats per minute as well as a credit to Kaskade’s own skills. And while Dynasty features a mainstream dance collaboration with Dutch music titan Ti

Lindsay Lohan Is A ‘Fragile Lost Child,’ Lawyer Says

Stuart Goldberg declined to take her case after meeting with Lohan over the weekend. By Gil Kaufman Lindsay Lohan Photo: Dave McNew/ Getty Images Even with a 90-day jail sentence and a 90-day bid in an inpatient rehab facility to follow, a lawyer who met with Lindsay Lohan over the weekend about possibly taking up her case said the actress still doesn’t appear to fully understand how serious her situation is. According to People magazine, Chicago attorney Stuart V. Goldberg met with Lohan, her mother Dina and younger sister Ali at Lohan’s West Hollywood apartment this week after the “Mean Girls” star was dropped by her former attorney , and he came away concerned that his potential client is living in a fantasy world. “My impression of Lindsay is that she’s a fragile lost child — a sleeping beauty with her head in the sand. I found her not fully forewarned of the consequence of her actions,” Goldberg reportedly told the magazine. “I’m concerned that she’s not disciplined or tethered enough to the reality of adult consequences. … She doesn’t seem to have the awareness of what’s going to befall her.” Criminal defense attorney Goldberg was contacted after Lohan’s attorney, Shawn Chapman Holley, quit the case following the backlash against the 24-year-old actress’ actions and alleged comments following her sentencing, which included revelations that she had the phrase “f— u” stenciled on her middle fingernail during the court appearance. After explaining to the Lohans that his requirement for taking on Lindsay’s case was “100 percent loyalty and zero tolerance for dishonesty,” Goldberg said “they didn’t seem to understand the urgency and gravity of the situation.” Additionally, TMZ reported that unnamed insiders said Goldberg may have split because Lohan’s manager said they couldn’t afford to pay him, while a source in the actress’ camp said it was because of personality issues. Much as she did during her probation hearing last week, Goldberg said Lohan took copious notes in a notebook during their six-hour meeting, while sister Ali asked “astute” questions, but in the end he declined to take on the case. He said at one point he worried that Lohan might be in a “dangerous state” and asked the actress — who has struggled with addiction issues and spent time in several rehab facilities — if she had thought about hurting herself. “She started sobbing quietly. She was genuinely in pain,” Goldberg said, adding that Lohan was “like Teflon” to his comment that she should get out of the toxic environment of Los Angeles. “It just slid right off her. She seemed to have some inner deep sadness that that was her fate.” Related Photos Lindsay Lohan Goes To Court The Highs And Lows Of Lindsay Lohan Related Artists Lindsay Lohan

M.I.A. Says MAYA Is ‘A 3-D Album’

‘It’s not this one-dimensional, shiny pop album,’ singer says. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Akshay Bhansali M.I.A. Photo: MTV News It’s been called everything from her “most personal” effort and “a towering work” (link http://www.clashmusic.com/reviews/mia-maya) to an outright “turd” , but according to M.I.A. , her new ///Y/&#92 album is really just her … in 3-D form. “I think my album’s really diverse, because I tried to make a 3-D version of who I was. Maybe that’s because I made it in the year when everything was f—ing 3-D, like ‘The World Cup … in 3-D!’ ‘Toothpaste adverts in 3-D!’And I was like ‘Fine, I’ll make an M.I.A. album in 3-D,’ ” she told MTV News. “And … that’s what I did. Sonically, it’s a 3-D album, it’s not this one-dimensional, shiny pop album, or, like, f—ed up dub-step album. It’s just 3-D. You’re not always high all the time, going like, ‘Oh My God, life’s so great! [I’m] at the beach!’ It’s way more complex that that, and I think it has those levels in it.” And ///Y/&#92 (which hits stores Tuesday), is most certainly complex, an album of multi-tiered dissonance, of whoops and wails, squelches and scuzz. From the paranoid rattle of opening track “The Message” to the stoned-out babble of closer “Space,” M.I.A. and her cadre of producers (a team that, this time around, included not just frequent collaborator Diplo — he of the “turd” comment — but also Blaqstarr, Rusko and Switch) go to great lengths to pack the album with as much sonic detritus as possible … everything from pneumatic tools (on “Steppin’ Up”) to screaming jet engines (“Story To Be Told,”) with Suicide samples, handclaps, Tablas, Jamaican radio chatter, muffled gunshots and an army of power chords thrown in for good measure. It’s enough to make your head swirl … or possibly explode. And it sounds that way because, during the year-plus she spent working on the album, M.I.A. very much felt like she would explode, too. Barred from leaving the country, pregnant with her first child, watching her homeland of Sri Lanka slog through the last stages of a bloody civil conflict, she felt helpless, confused and downright frustrated by everything going on around her. And ///Y/&#92 is the sound of her inner turmoil. “The last album was more about the environment and where you ended up and the people you met … on this one, there was just so much going on in my own world, and in my own life — whether it’s personal or professional — [that] there’s just no room for all that stuff,” she said. “And I’m still working off things I’ve seen and been inspired by that I haven’t fully explored in my other two albums. And so, having all that, and then with all this extra sh– that was going on in my personal life, I think it worked out great that I couldn’t leave the country, and I was just, like, locked up in a cave. It gave me time and space to just puke all this stuff out that was going on in my own life.” So while it’s by no means easy listening, ///Y/&#92 isn’t supposed to be. Born out of intense personal strife, it represents M.I.A. at her most cathartic, her most detached, her most free. Does all of that make for radio-friendly pop? Not especially. Does it make for an absolutely compelling listen? Most definitely. “I couldn’t even register another human being, or another influence, or the scene and the music that’s going on outside. I’ve always been like that, I’ve always been out there … and been really connected to everything and everyone before,” she said. “And this was the first time I had to just take time out and I think this is the music that reflects all the stuff that was going on — sometimes it was confusing and sometimes it was great.” Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: M.I.A. Flo Rida, David Guetta Talk ‘Big’ Single ‘Club Can’t Handle Me’

The French super-producer ‘has been a guy who I look up to,’ Flo tells MTV News of recruiting Guetta. By Akshay Bhansali Flo Rida Photo: MTV News Since recording the internationally successful hip-hop/dance single “Right Round,” Flo Rida seems to have found the sound he’d like to follow on his next go-round. The rapper can now be included in an ever-expanding list of superstars turning to dance-music super-producer David Guetta in search of a song to set the club on fire. We recently caught up with the new partners in crime on the Los Angeles video set for their collaboration, “Club Can’t Handle Me.” The song not only appears on the MC’s upcoming album, The Only One, but it’s also slated to be the lead single for Disney’s “Step Up” threequel, “Step Up 3-D.” And working with Guetta means Flo’s not in bad company: Rihanna , Akon , Kelly Rowland and the Black Eyed Peas are but a few of the folks who’ve partnered with Guetta during the French DJ’s two-year ascension on the U.S. pop-music scene. With each song, Guetta’s knack for getting folks to jump to their feet seems to grow stronger. “David Guetta has been a guy who I look up to,” Flo told MTV News. “He’s definitely been big around the world and has always been there to let me know that my music is hot, and vice versa. So I definitely appreciate doing this big record with him.” “I was always playing a bootleg with ‘Love Is Gone’ [Guetta’s original collabo with Kelly Rowland] and ‘Low,’ from him,” Guetta recalled. “One day, his record company called me and asked me if I would produce records for him. I was like, ‘Yeah! Of course! Because I knew it was working in every club I was playing already.” The video’s backdrop is exactly what one might imagine from the title: an opulent, extravagant club party befitting a rap boss and world-renowned club DJ. “This video right here is just, if you’ve ever dreamed about having the biggest party of your life, ‘Club Can’t Handle Me’ definitely represents that,” Flo said. “Lotta energy. Lot of diamonds, ice sculptures. Just showing that boss vibe. So I mean really, the club can’t handle me.” But it was Guetta who probably summed it up best saying, “We are definitely both club people — it’s like our office!” he laughed. Flo Rida’s forthcoming The Only One features production by Dr. Luke (“Right Round”) and guest verses from Jay Rock and Lil Wayne. Landon Donovan Says ‘Finality’ Is Hardest Part Of Losing World Cup

USA soccer star talks about the importance of volunteering at New York conference. By Kyle Anderson, with reporting by Akshay Bhansali Landon Donovan Photo: MTV News If Tuesday night’s forum for the National Conference on Volunteering and Service had happened a month ago, undoubtedly the biggest audience response would have gone to former first daughter Barbara Bush or Ben Nemtin from MTV’s “The Buried Life.” But then Landon Donovan’s 2010 FIFA World Cup heroics happened and captivated a suddenly soccer-loving American public, which meant that he scored the biggest and most prolonged cheers from the crowd of students and young people gathered in the spirit of spreading the word about giving back. Donovan talked about the importance of public service, something he said he got from his parents. “I come from a background with teachers everywhere, and my mom taught special ed for 29 years, so if there’s a definition of giving and service to a community, I think being a special-ed teacher is way up there,” he told MTV News after speaking to the group. The soccer star doesn’t just talk the talk, either. He has been active in a number of different charities and service organizations that he has managed to help through his participation on the U.S. national soccer squad. Most recently, the Los Angeles Galaxy player has been working with a group to try to stamp out malaria in Africa. “The people from United Against Malaria approached me and asked me if I wanted to be a part of their campaign, and for me it was perfect,” Donovan said. “No better way to get awareness than a World Cup. Everybody was watching — the first World Cup in Africa. Ten dollars buys a net that literally saves a family’s lives. The biggest thing is getting awareness out there. Not just awareness in other countries but also awareness in Africa — letting people know it’s as simple as going out and buying a net to help save yourself.” Donovan also shared his musical obsessions (he digs hip-hop but tends to listen to more laid-back stuff like the Fray before games) and talked about how he dealt with the United States’ elimination from the tournament at the hands of Ghana in the round of 16 last Saturday. “We’ve all lost plenty of games in our lives, but when you lose in a World Cup, it’s different and it’s more disappointing,” he explained. “The finality of it all is the hard part. You realize that everything you’ve put in for so long is gone and you have to wait another four years. That’s the part that’s most difficult to take.”

M.I.A. Calls Reaction To ‘Born Free’ Video ‘Interesting’

People react more to ‘tomato ketchup and fake blood’ than to clips of real violence, M.I.A. points out. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Akshay Bhansali M.I.A. Photo: MTV News In the days following its release in April, practically everyone weighed in on M.I.A.’s “Born Free” video , calling it everything from “unflinchingly, unapologetically real” to “exploitive and hollow.” It was polarizing, to be sure, but that was sort of the point: “Born Free” was clearly designed to elicit a response. But through it all, M.I.A. herself kept quiet about the video. Until Monday, when MTV News sat down with her to talk about a host of topics, including her new album, ///Y/ (due July 13), and the maelstrom of controversy created by “Born Free.” To hear her tell it, the reaction to the video wasn’t as much hurtful as it was fascinating. “It was just interesting at the time, for me, to see how the Internet works. Because I tweeted [a video purportedly showing the execution of Tamil separatists in Sri Lanka] a couple months before, and nobody really gave a sh–,” M.I.A. said. “And when there’s tomato ketchup and fake blood, people are like, ‘Oh my God, this is shocking!’ And it’s like, ‘It’s ketchup!’ [So] I think it’s interesting how we react to fiction and how we react to realism on the Internet.” Though her critics may have slammed the “Born Free” video, M.I.A. said that in the two months since it was released, the clip has only become more important. In fact, with its scenes of violence against ethnic minorities (in the video’s case, redheads) and its dark, paranoid tone, one might argue that it’s downright prescient. “Thinking about ‘Born Free,’ what, a month on, is interesting because, last week, I guess in [Texas,] they shot the Mexican kid,” she said, referring to the 15-year-old shot by a U.S. Border Patrol agent earlier this month. “Or, think about the boat that went into [Gaza] with all the activists. … Since the video came out, there’s been events. “Or even yesterday, the story about the president being able to shut the Internet down with one button, the ‘kill switch,’ or whatever, which is all really interesting,” she added, talking about a bill being proposed that would allow the U.S. government greater control in the face of a major cyber-attack. (Bill co-sponsor Sen. Joseph Lieberman has said the term “kill switch” is an exaggeration.) “This is not some weird, crazy conspiracy theory, this is mainstream media,” M.I.A. argued. “I wish I was talking about way more underground theories, but [I’m] not, this is just me digesting what I see in the mainstream.” Has a video or song ever opened your eyes about real-world events? David Guetta Wants To Drop Dance Beats On Rihanna’s Next LP

The superstar French DJ/ producer tells MTV News he and the pop diva have discussed a collaboration. By Jocelyn Vena, with additional reporting by Matt Elias and Akshay Bhansali Rihanna Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images When Rihanna released her Rated R last fall, she showed fans that she was in a darker, more serious mood. Tracks like “Russian Roulette” and “Hard” were decidedly more introspective than her past club bangers. But if superstar French DJ David Guetta has his way, he’ll have Rih back to singing tunes like her mega-hit “Umbrella.” “Well, you know I’m a DJ, so I make beats that make you wanna dance,” Guetta told MTV News at the Activision E3 party in Los Angeles. “And I think she was one of the first to do that in that urban world, so you know, I think it would be good for her to do it again.” While the producer already has some material in mind for the pop star, he said it was just a matter of scheduling. “We[‘re] thinking of doing something together, yes,” he revealed. “Yeah, yeah, yeah [the beat’s ready], we just have to make sure it’s okay with her schedule and my schedule cause we … this is what happens. Unfortunately, it’s not only about the music anymore, it’s also about schedules, which is really boring but, you know.” Dutch DJ/ producer Afrojack has also gotten behind the boards, Guetta said, crafting what he hopes will be the next big Rihanna hit. “Like, he was in the studio with me the first time [after] he finished the new song for Rihanna,” Guetta recalled of Afrojack. “He was like, ‘Oh, my God! You gotta hear this! It’s crazy!’ I was expecting some crazy club sh–. He played me that track and it was a good track. I think pop-wise it’s a fatter sound. Musically, it’s as high a level as RedOne, Lady Gaga’s producer.” Rihanna has been vocal about bringing up the energy level on her next album. ” Rated R, I love the sound of it, in terms of the bass,” Rihanna told MTV Korea in February. “I really like the bottom, the grime of it. But if I were to combine that with more energetic, up-tempo pop records, then I think that will be a happy marriage. And that’s where we’ll probably go next.” Where would you like to see Rihanna go musically on her next album? Tell us in the comments! Related Artists Rihanna David Guetta

Kanye West’s ‘Power’ Is ‘A Loud Warning Shot,’ Experts Say

Kanye’s message is, ‘I’m here to smack you,’ RapRadar’s Elliott Wilson says. By MTV News Staff, with reporting by Akshay Bhansali Kanye West Photo: Amy Sussman/Getty Images Kanye West returned with a bang on Friday when his new track “Power” leaked online, making it the first offering from Ye’s highly-anticipated next album. The MC has been keeping a relatively low profile in recent months, following his interruption of Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at last year’s MTV Video Music Awards and subsequent apologies. The Symbolyc One-produced “Power” finds West back in MC mode, firing away at his detractors and giving fans a preview of what’s to come on his next project, which he’s been recording in Hawaii with a slew of other artists and producers. “I’m living in the 21st Century, doing something mean to it,” West spits on the opening lines. “Do it better than anybody you ever seen do it/ Screams from the haters, got a nice ring to it/ I guess every superhero need his theme music.” MTV News spoke with a group of hip-hop pundits — both our own and from the wider rap journalism world — to get their takes on West’s latest number. “The song comes out, and it’s like everything stops,” Minya Oh of MissInfo.TV said. “It’s a really strong, aggressive beat that’s not street, but the drums are undeniable. But the lyrics really got me.” West delivers his trademark punchlines, but his rhymes are also imbued with a biting aggressiveness, particularly when he targets “Saturday Night Live.” “F— ‘SNL’ and the whole cast,” West rhymes. “Tell ’em Yeezy said they can kiss my whole ass. More specifically they can kiss my a–hole.” ” ‘SNL’ caught a bad one,” RapRadar.com’s Elliott Wilson said. “[The song is] real rap, like, ‘I want my spot back.’ [It’s like Kanye saying,] ‘Drake is cool; Wayne is my man; Jay, I bow to him, he’s a legend, he’s my father in this — but I’m here to smack you.’ It’s sport: ‘F— all of you, I’m the best.’ ” “Kanye is tired of being messed with,” MTV News’ Jayson Rodriguez said. “The same way we got tired of the Kanye rants or the Kanye antics, he’s pushing back: ‘You know what, I’m tired of you f—in’ with me.’ “It’s a really loud warning shot,” Rodriguez added. “Anybody who had the feeling, ‘Watch out for Kanye’s next album,’ this song confirmed: You were right.” The combination of an embattled West, rapping with the spirit of an underdog but delivering masterful arrangements is nothing new, according to MTV News’ Shaheem Reid. “To me, that kind of embodies his whole career,” Reid said of “Power.” “Because there’s always been people that doubted Kanye; there’s always been people, for one reason or another, that just don’t like the dude. But just like Kobe Bryant wins championships, Kanye West makes classic albums.” Everyone agreed that West now has the game’s attention. “Kanye did what he’s supposed to do,” MTV News’ Sean Lee said. “He said he was back, and artists at his level, when they come back big with records, it’s got to be an event.” What do you think of “Power”? ‘Sex And The City 2’ Samantha Wedding Pics Were A ‘Bait-And-Switch’

Kim Cattrall told director Michael Patrick King: ‘I want to come to the set someday in a wedding gown.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Kim Catrall Photo: MTV News There have been many memorable weddings on “Sex and the City 2.” Who could forget when Charlotte married Trey? Or, for that matter, when Charlotte married Harry? And, there was that lovely little ceremony when Steve finally got Miranda to tie the knot. Then, of course, fans nearly died of happiness when Mr. Big and Carrie Bradshaw finally walked down the aisle in the first “Sex and the City” movie. So when fans saw paparazzi photos of Samantha (Kim Cattrall) in a wedding dress, they thought she was the latest “Sex and the City” girl to put a ring on it. Turns out, they got duped. “That was a completely conscious bait-and-switch,” “Sex and the City 2” director Michael Patrick King told MTV News. He said it was Cattrall’s devious mind that came up with the idea. “[She] came to me and said, ‘I want to come to the set someday in a wedding gown and make everybody think Samantha’s getting married,’ ” he recalled. “And I put it in my head [like], ‘That’s a funny idea.’ Forty-five minutes later, I turned around; she was crossing the street in a wedding gown. I thought, ‘Oh, today?’ ” Cattrall wasn’t able to pull it off all on her own; she got some help from the show’s iconic stylist. “Patricia Field got a gown that fit her within 40 minutes, and she had a veil on and she’s running across the street,” he said. “And what I loved about it was every blog that I saw was like, ‘This looks like a bad idea for a movie.’ And I was like, ‘It is!’ ” Check out everything we’ve got on “Sex and the City 2.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .
