The Ebola outbreak in Sierra Leone is devastating… Sierra Leone Government Cancels Christmas To Prevent Ebola Disease From Spreading The holiday season is sadly looking more and more bleek for the Sierra Leone community via Gawker Sierra Leone will ban all public Christmas and New Year’s celebrations in an effort to curtail further spread of Ebola, Agence France-Presse reports. The government’s Ebola response unit told reporters on Friday that soldiers would be deployed to keep people in their homes. Public gatherings had already been banned, The Guardian reports; these new restrictions are intended to keep people in Freetown, the nation’s capital, where Ebola is rampant, from traveling to see family members elsewhere in the country where the disease may not have yet taken hold. According to a World Health Organization (WHO) report released on Wednesday, Sierra Leone and its neighbors Guinea and Liberia account for all but 15 of a total of 6,388 Ebola-related deaths worlwide (out of a total of 17,942 cases). In the week before December 7, Sierra Leone confirmed 397 new cases—three times its neighbors’ combined total—and in the last three weeks, AFP reports, Sierra Leone reported 1,319 new infections. Man In Liberia Who Didn’t Have Ebola Denied Entry Back Into US Before Dying Via The Root reports: Two Americans with Ebola have been flown in from Liberia over the past week and treated with a “secret serum” in the hopes of helping them successfully combat the deadly virus. However, Ebola has already taken its first American victim. To be fair, 24-year-old Nathaniel Dennis did not have Ebola, but the fear inflamed by the rapidly spreading disease that has already killed more than 800 people in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea certainly contributed to his death, his older sister, Natasha Dennis, told The Root. “The first case of Ebola was in February, March. Why wasn’t it more contained then? What happened to the education of the people to make it get to this point right now? My brother, he’s still a victim of Ebola, but he’s a victim of the hysteria it caused,” says Dennis, 27, who lives in California. It all started following a family vacation to Liberia, where the siblings’ mother, Precious Dennis, lives as an educator. Nathaniel decided to stay in Liberia once the trip was over when the music lover found a job at a local radio station. After about a month, on July 24, his mother awoke to find her youngest son comatose on his bedroom floor, his body stiff and his eyes rolled back, Natasha Dennis said. His room was in disarray. “That’s when the Ebola outbreak started getting really big; of course, any time anyone’s sick they have to confirm that it’s not Ebola, so they put him in quarantine right away and he was there for three days just being treated for Ebola. All his tests came back negative,” Dennis explains. “So at this point we’re calling the embassy, we’re trying to get him out, everyone’s telling me that they’re not flying into Liberia at this time, no one can help us, there’s nothing they can do, things like that.” When Nathaniel Dennis was released from quarantine, the family attempted to get him evacuated to Ghana to receive the treatment he needed—which was just a respirator and a dialysis machine. However, Ghana wouldn’t let him in, given the Ebola scare and having closed its borders to Liberia. “My poor brother,” Dennis says. “He lasted a week, and at the end, he just needed a ventilator to keep him breathing, to help him, and they didn’t have that.” Nathaniel Dennis died on July 30, with a doctor telling the family that the cause was kidney failure. The family’s frustration did not end there, however. “What we still don’t understand is that the next day after my brother passed, they sent a plane to go get these doctors that do have Ebola, and I think that’s the most frustrating part for us. We can’t understand,” the grieving big sister tells The Root. So, who decides who gets treatment and who gets to die when this Ebola outbreak hits maximum hysteria?? Via Daily Mail reports : A rare fish known for gnawing through men’s testicles while they are out swimming has been found in the River Seine in Paris. The sharped-tooth Pacu is a Piranha-style creature with a variety of nicknames, including ‘The Nutcracker’. Mainly found in steamy South American waters, it is known for gliding below male swimmers and taking a nibble out of their most sensitive organ, sometimes allegedly ripping it off and swallowing it. A fisherman in Paris called the river police when he reeled in the frightening looking fish, which can weigh as much as 25 kilos, last Friday morning. ‘He sent us an image of the picture through his smart phone and it turned out to be a Pacu,’ said a police spokesman. ‘It is a fish with a very dangerous bite!’ The Pacu, which is of Brazilian Indian origin, is technically a vegetarian, but tends to be attracted to male genitalia for unknown reasons. There have been unconfirmed reports of fishermen in Papua New Guinea having their manhoods ripped off by the fish. When one was found in Denmark last month, Copenhagen University professor Peter Rask Moller said: ‘All we suggested was that swimmers keep their pants on until we know if there are more of these fish out in our brackish waters.’ When Pacu turn up in strange places, it is usually because the owner of an exotic aquarium has dumped one. ‘Pacu are commonly kept in aquaria because they are fairly docile, but look like piranhas,’ Peter Moyle, a fish biologist, told the Los Angeles Times last month. ‘They grow quickly in captivity and, unlike goldfish, will outgrow aquaria, so owners release them into whatever pond they can find locally.’ The Seine is nowadays considered too dirty for swimming in, and police said that the chillier weather would soon ensure that fish like the Pacu would not survive. Veterinarian Faces Charges After Treating A Person Ever been treated by an animal doctor for a foot problem? No? Welp, apparently no one told this guy that it wasn’t the best idea. via Fox News A veterinarian has been charged with practicing medicine on humans without a license after a man said he had to have three toes amputated because of improper care. Greeley detectives wrote Dr. Fran Freemyer a ticket for the misdemeanor on Wednesday after the 58-year-old man told police he went to Northern Colorado Medical Center in late June and doctors said he needed the toes removed. Police Sgt. Susan West said Thursday the man went to the vet with a foot ailment, and the vet gave him ointment. The problem got worse and he went to a hospital.| Freemyer told The Associated Press on Thursday he was treating a dog for skin cancer, and a woman who owned the dog took some of the medicine home and gave it to a neighbor without his knowledge. “I don’t treat people,” Freemyer said. He said the dog, a Jack Russell terrier named “Scooter,” had lesions on his back and he rubbed it with a thick topical ointment and sent the dog home. He said the woman who owns the dog somehow got some of the medicine, and when a neighbor complained of a similar ailment on his foot, the dog owner thought the medicine would help. If you thought bunnies were bad, it turns out freaky group sex having guinea pigs are worse! Via The Local Germany : Münster University’s biology department keeps 13 very vocal male and female guinea pigs together in one big cage outdoors. On it, a sign states “These animals live in non-committal, mixed-gender groups and mate with every possible partner.” The Bild newspaper reported on Friday that the guinea pigs are so noisy – particularly at night – that the institute for neuro- and behavioural biology’s next-door neighbours have filed a complaint at Münster’s administrative court. “The Guinea pigs are unbelievably loud and stink to high heaven. It’s unbearable,” said 69-year-old Pavo R.. On Thursday, a judge confirmed to the paper that the cage was too close to the couple’s house. It is just two meters from where their garden begins. Legally, it should be three meters away. But the institute says the cage can not be moved, and a spokesman from the North Rhine-Westphalian university told Bild that they hoped that “the ruling doesn’t mean the end of their renowned behavioral research.” SMH. Cross your legs, male readers. We have some breaking fish news out of Sweden. A local fisherman surprised animal experts in that country last week when he caught a pacu in the Øresund channel. This relative of the piranha is known as a “ball cutter” because, well… “There have been incidents in other countries, such as Papua New Guinea, where some men have had their testicles bitten off,” said Henrik Carl, a fish expert at a Danish museum, speaking to an English-language newspaper in Sweden, adding: “They bite because they’re hungry, and testicles sit nicely in their mouth.” Man.
