Drug Kingpin Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman Escapes Prison Again Drug kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman escaped through a one-mile long tunnel that was dug under the shower space of his prison cell in central Mexico, authorities said Sunday. After security cameras lost sight of Guzman late Saturday, guards went into the cell and found a hole 10 meters (33 feet) deep with a ladder, said National Security Commissioner Monte Alejandro Rubido. The hole led to the huge tunnel with a ventilation and light system, Rubido said, adding that its exit was in a building that was under construction. A motorcycle on a rail system was found in the tunnel and is believed to have been used to transport tools and remove earth from the space, which was 1.7 meters high and around 80 centimeters (2.6 feet) wide. Rubido said 18 prison guards will be interrogated by prosecutors in Mexico City. Until Guzman escaped, Rubido said, “the day had gone on normally and at around 8:00 pm he was given his daily dose of medicine.” The maximum-security prison is located 90 kilometers (55 miles) west of the capital in Mexico State. Guzman had been jailed there since February 2014. It is the second time in 14 years that Guzman has broken out of prison. The last time, in 2001, he hid in a laundry basket to escape from a prison in western Jalisco state. El Chapo is back on these skreets! EPA/MARIO GUZMAN

Alabama Man Dies After Cops Pepper Spray Him A Black man in Tuscaloosa, Alabama died after officers used pepper spray to subdue him when he resisted arrest, police said on Saturday. Via RawStory : Police received a call on Friday night that a man armed with a gun was sitting on a porch at an apartment complex in the city, Tuscaloosa police said in a statement on their Facebook page. Police later identified the man as Anthony Ware, a 35-year-old African-American, the Tuscaloosa News reported on its website. When officers arrived, the man ran into nearby woods and was chased by officers who used the pepper spray before placing him in handcuffs as he resisted arrest, police said. He later collapsed as he was walking out of the woods, police said. Police conduct in the United States has been under scrutiny over the past year after a series of deaths of black men in confrontations with police that have provoked protests over the treatment of minorities by law enforcement. The Tuscaloosa News reported Ware was pursued by six police officers, including at least three white officers as well as a black officer and an Asian-America officer. Police plan to release video of the arrest from a vehicle dash cam and body cameras, Tuscaloosa’s assistant police chief, Ronnie Dunn, told a news conference on Saturday, according to the Tuscaloosa News. Police said they tried to revive Ware when he collapsed and that he was rushed to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead. The Tuscaloosa County homicide unit will investigate the death, police said. A representative from the Tuscaloosa Police Department did not return calls for further comment. Police brutality has to end!

Pastor Accused Of Killing Wife To Have Gay Affairs Before she was killed in 2013, Karen Shahan sent an email saying she knew of her pastor husband’s sexual preferences and his attempts to carry on affairs with two men outside of Alabama, according to prosecutors. Via AL reports: Richard Shahan, formerly a pastor in Homewood, was charged last January in connection with his wife’s murder. He is set to appear in court for a pretrial hearing Thursday morning before Jefferson County Circuit Judge Laura Petro. In a document filed Wednesday, prosecutors responded to a request from Shahan’s attorneys, Wendell Sheffield and John Lentine, seeking specific facts necessary to prepare the defense. Witnesses, numerous emails and statements from Shahan himself demonstrate that he was involved in romantic relationships with a man in Nashville and another in Europe, Deputy District Attorney Patrick Lamb wrote. In an email sent to an unidentified recipient in February 2012, Karen Shahan wrote that she told Richard that he had to choose between the two lives he was trying to maintain, according to the prosecution’s filing. “I told him that he cannot keep both lives. That he will have to lose one of them. I said that if he was having any interactions that were not right before God that he should go to God and be completely honest with him because he knows anyway. I told him that God will reveal it to me. I told him that any texting or gmailing that does not bring glory to God has to go…” Karen Louise Shahan’s body was discovered about 11:15 a.m. July 23, 2013, inside the family’s Hugh Circle home. She was stabbed to death and had several small defensive wounds, according to court filings. In the document filed Wednesday, prosecutors say that email and text message conversations between Richard Shahan and his two “paramours” include explicit sexual statements, as well as a reference to Karen’s death: “I’m in a legal marriage contract [sic]. There is not an acceptable way for me to dissolve that and continue with the things that are important to me (my job and children)…There is only one way I could become legally ‘single’ and I have to wait until God grants me that gift. It will come; the woman I live with is slowly killing herself – she is diabetic and refuses to take care of herself physically. Her mother died early with the same disease and did the same thing to her body. So I pray and wait. It will happen in God’s timing.” The filing states that Shahan also wrote emails noting that, because of his job, his sexual preference had to be kept secret and he could not get divorced. In a November 2011 message to his European paramour, Shahan mentions his hopes for the future. You going to jail today!

Bob Burns, a founding member of Lynyrd Skynyrd, has died at 64. The drummer, who played on the band’s first two albums, was killed in a car crash. A Georgia State Patrol spokeswoman said Burns, who was not wearing a seat belt, was killed when his car left the road , striking a mailbox and a tree. He was alone in the car, and no other cars were involved in the fatal Friday crash. Police are trying to establish if weather was a factor in the accident. Burns performed alongside singer Ronnie Van Zant, bassist Larry Junstrom and guitarists Gary Rossington and Allen Collins in Skynyd from 1966-74. Named after their childhood P.E. teacher, Leonard Skinner, the band recorded such songs as “Sweet Home Alabama,” “Simple Man” and “Free Bird.” Burns left the band after becoming exhausted by touring, and Artimus Pyle subsequently replaced him as drummer for 1975’s Nuthin’ Fancy album. He was not aboard the plane that crashed in 1977, killing three of the band’s members, including Van Zant, and disbanding the band until a decade later. The surviving members were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006, at which point Burns rejoined the group for a one-off performance. “Well, today I’m at a loss for words, but I just remember Bob being a funny guy,” Rossington said in a message posted on the Lynyrd Skynyrd Facebook page. “He used to do skits for us and make us laugh all the time, he was hilarious!” “Ironically, since we played Jacksonville yesterday, Dale, my daughter and I, went by the cemetery to see some of the guys in the band and my parents’ grave sites.” “On the way back, we went by Bob Burns’ old house. It was there in the carport where we used to first start to practice with Skynyrd. My heart goes out to his family.” “God bless him and them in this sad time. He was a great, great drummer.” Celebrities We Lost in 2015 1. Stuart Scott View Photo ESPN’s Stuart Scott (1965-2015) will forever be missed. Lisa Colagrossi, a 49-year-old New York TV news reporter for WABC, has died after suffering a brain hemorrhage while covering a story on Thursday. The veteran TV news reporter and anchor was remembered for her professionalism, compassion and reliable reporting after her death in NYC. Fans and colleagues started sharing tributes within hours of the news. Even her hockey team, the New York Rangers, shared condolences on Twitter. To them, the death of a morning news fixture felt like losing a loved one, many said, a testament to the role of local news in an age of global media. Her employer, WABC said in a statement that “Thursday seemed like just another morning, with Lisa Colagrossi doing what she did so well, reporting live.” “She was an amazing reporter, committed to Eyewitness News. She was dedicated to telling a story with honesty, a working woman, a hockey mom.” “She was gutsy and fearless. We here at Eyewitness News are still in shock and we’re trying to cope with the loss of someone we loved and valued.” It’s what New York came to know and expect from Lisa Colagrossi: “authentic, steady, reassuring reporting,” the station continued of “the ultimate pro.” Journalist Colagrossi, they said, could seamlessly “go from tackling crimes to financial news; Lisa could find humor even at the expense of herself.” “She covered some of the biggest stories in the Tri-State for almost 14 years. She started working at WABC the Sunday after the World Trade Center disaster.” Like most journalists, she made a few stops on her way to New York, starting in her native Cleveland before moving onto Alabama, West Virginia and Orlando. In a news town that’s notoriously tough to break into, Colagrossi “out-hustled other New York reporters from the very beginning,” anchor Lori Stokes said. “It’s hard to imagine mornings without Lisa. We here at Eyewitness News are still in shock and we’re trying to cope with the loss of someone we loved and valued.” She leaves behind two sons and a husband. Celebrities We Lost in 2015 1.
