Google Celebrates MLK Day With Special Doodle And Civil Rights Photography

Google is celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr Day with a special doodle and a homepage promotion of a curated collection of Civil Rights photography from the High Museum of Art in Atlanta. Today’s doodle was illustrated by African-American artist Keith Mallett, who’s created various prominent works including the official limited edition print commemorating the 50th anniversary of Jackie Robinson’s historic breakthrough into major league baseball and the cover of Chicken Soup for The African American Soul. Both Franklin Mint and Lenox Collections have created collectibles of Keith’s most popular works. His artwork can be found in many private and corporate collections throughout the world. You may notice that beneath the Google doodle there is also a link to explore photography from the Civil Rights movement. The High Museum of Art holds one of the most significant collections of photographs of the Civil Rights Movement. The works in this exhibition are only a small selection of the collection, which includes more than 300 photographs that document the social protest movement, from Rosa Parks’s arrest to the Freedom Rides to the tumultuous demonstrations of the late 1960s. The city of Atlanta—the birthplace of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.—was a hub of civil rights activism and it figures prominently in the collection. Read More HERE Keith Mallett/Google/High Museum

This Woman Says As Long As She Stays Black, She’ll Never Forget What Jeff Sessions Did To Her Family

If you’ve been on the internet within the past month, you’ve likely stumbled across the name Jeff Sessions. If you’re like me and like to avoid words, things and people that have to do with Donald Trump, you might not know why he’s significant. Well, Sessions is a Republican senator from Alabama who President-elect Donald Trump has picked as his candidate for Attorney General. Of all the people Trump has suggested putting into positions of power, it’s Sessions’ name that has caused the most outrage. Mostly because, in addition to his anti-immigration stance, he has a reputation for being racist. In fact, according to The Washington Post, in 1986, he was denied a federal judgeship because former colleagues testified that Sessions used the n-word and joked about the Klan, saying he thought they were “okay” until he learned that they smoked marijuana. That same year when he was attempting to become a judge Coretta Scott King wrote a 9-page-letter to Congress asking that he not be nominated because he used his office to suppress the Black vote in his state. The host of the Tax Season podcast was wanted for being a felon in possession of firearm while NYPD was looking for him due to his involvement in the shooting. Shortly after the incident, which went down at a T.I. concert, many speculated it was Taxstone seen running away as Troy Ave licked off shots in his direction. Community Colleges Reaching Out To ITT Tech Students To Help Continue Their Education

Community Colleges Are Reaching Out To Those In Need Last week, ITT Tech presumably ruined the lives of thousands of its students when they permanently closed the doors of every single campus in the country. ITT Tech’s credits tend not to transfer to other institutions , effectively costing both time and money of their student population. There might be some reprieve however, as community colleges are reaching out to Tech students to help them continue their educational pursuits. via AL.com Community colleges across Alabama are reaching out to former ITT Tech students after the institute’s sudden closure last week. Calhoun Community College will host an information session and open house on September 15 from 4-6 p.m. for students to meet with instructors and representatives from the school’s various programs. There will also be financial aid advisers and counselors available for more information about enrollment. “Our team has met for the last few days in an effort to develop a comprehensive plan as we work with those ITT students who decide to make Calhoun their choice in continuing their higher education goals,” Calhoun President Dr. James Klauber said. The event will be at Calhoun’s Decatur Campus in the Aerospace Training Center. Those interested can call Caroline Canestrari at 256-306-276 for more information or go to  calhoun.edu. The school announced that it is shutting its doors today after being investigated by multiple agencies and after the U.S. Dept. of Education said it would stop federal loans for the school’s students. Another school, Athens State University, said on its website  that the school is “committed to assisting students wishing to transfer to Athens State to complete their education.” “As a regionally accredited, state-supported University, we are constrained by guidelines that sometimes limit our ability to transfer all credits from all institutions. Nonetheless, given the hardship that the ITT closing has placed on so many students in Alabama and across the country, we welcome the opportunity to review transcripts and course descriptions on request for any possible transfer of credit to our programs,” the school said. Former ITT Tech students have not been notified if their credits from the school will be transferable. Students interested in speaking with an Athens State counselor can call 256-233-8100 or go to athens.edu  for more information. According to WALA  and WHNT , other schools helping ITT Tech students include the Alabama Aviation Center at the Brookley Field campus in Mobile, J.F. Drake State Community and Technical College in Huntsville, and Oakwood University in Huntsville. This is definitely an awesome move and all the colleges involved should be commended for providing a helping hand at this time.

Sellout? Stephen A. Smith Tells Black Student

Stephen A. Smith Tells Black Students ‘Racism Doesn’t Exist’ Stephen A. Smith has been walking that fine line between absurdity and Uncle Tom-levels for a while now and it’s quite possible he just crossed that line. Here’s what he told a group of Black students in Alabama: “Racism doesn’t exist. Obviously, I’m lying. Of course it exists, but not for you. See, you don’t have to go to the back of the bus. You’re not denied the opportunity to eat at restaurants, or to enter night clubs, or to patronize businesses. You have the right to vote. You’re not being lynched. You’re not being hung,” Smith said, according to USA’s student newspaper, The Vanguard which recorded the speech. He went on to acknowledge that older black students do suffer from racism. “You’re older, you know I’m not talking about you. But youngsters, you need to understand that white folks got problems, too. Some of them can’t pay their bills. Some of them are struggling. Some of them are being denied opportunities. And you need to understand that, because when people are going through their own problems, they are not going to lament what your trials and tribulations are.” Um…what? He followed all of this up with this tweet: My MESSAGE to the youngsters: You don't get to use racism as an excuse why you can't succeed. — Stephen A Smith (@stephenasmith) March 3, 2016 Sir. If you don’t getcho…you know what? Never mind. We’ll just let the tweets do the dragging.

Donald Vs. Hillary: 2016 Primaries Projected To Put Trump In The Top Spot Against Clinton

Trump Wins Majority Of States In Super Tuesday The results from the 2016 Primaries, or “Super Tuesday” as it’s known , are still trickling in as states finish up their final counts across the nation…but the overall consensus thus far is looking as though we’ll have a race of Donald Trump vs. Hillary Clinton on the big decision day this year… Via MailOnline : Donald Trump romped through the second biggest day in American politics – only November presidential elections are grander – etching his name on seven trophies in the Republican party’s Super Tuesday display case, and hoping for more. The billionaire real estate tycoon has been declared the GOP primary winner in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Massachusetts, Tennessee, Vermont and Virginia. After tonight’s significant win, Trump told DailyMail.com during a press conference that his string of triumphs will make it difficult for Republican Party insiders to argue that he shouldn’t be their standard-bearer. ‘I have millions and millions of people,’ he said, describing the army of peasants wielding political pitchforks on his behalf. And as a result, he claimed, ‘the Republicans have tremendous energy. The Democrats don’t. … Their numbers are down. Our numbers are through the roof.’ SMH…have you all got your one-way tickets to another country in case this guy Trump actually wins it all??? CNN
