Lisa Murkowski: Sarah Palin Lacks "Intellectual Curiosity" to be President

Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowki told CBS News' Katie Couric today that she would not support Sarah Palin for president because Palin lacks the “leadership qualities” and “intellectual curiosity” to craft great policy. “You know, she was my governor for two years, for just about two years there, and I don't think that she enjoyed governing,” Murkowski said. “I don't think she liked to get down into the policy.” The Alaska senator added that she prefers a candidate who “goes to bed at night and wakes up in the morning thinking about how we're going to deal with” important issues. Palin endorsed Murkowski's opponent Joe Miller in the Republican Senate primary, an endorsement that helped Miller to an upset victory. Murkowski then embarked on a general election write-in bid that may have been successful: More write in votes were cast than votes for Miller, and the vast majority went to Murkowski. According to the Alaska Division of Elections, Miller won 87,517 votes, and there were 98,565 total write in votes. Of the 88,076 write-in votes counted so far, 78,697 have gone to Murkowski; another 7,059 have been counted for Murkowski but challenged by Miller. Counting is expected to continue through Wednesday. added by: TimALoftis

Liberal HuffPo Political Writer Validates ‘Little Alaska’ GOP Senate Primary Challenger in Delaware

Delaware might soon be referred to as “Little Alaska” not only because of its relatively small size in area but, more importantly, because the September 14 Republican senate primary in that state threatens to become a possible repeat of what recently happened in Alaska when little known Tea Party backed candidate, Joe Miller, apparently defeated the establishment incumbent, Senator Lisa Murkowski (absentee ballots still being counted). In the “Little Alaska” state of Delaware, Joe Miller comes in the form of little known Christine O’Donnell who is challenging “moderate” Congressman Mike Castle who has, until now, been considered as the sure victor in that state’s primary. However, after what happened in Alaska, the O’Donnell challenge has to be taken more seriously. Michelle Malkin is now focusing on that election in which anything, after Alaska, now seems possible: Well, 70-year-old, nine-term House cap-and-taxer GOP Rep. Mike Castle has a challenger. She’s Christine O’Donnell — a young, energetic, fresh-faced conservative activist with a real shot at dislodging the entrenched liberal Republican. She’s been traveling the state of Delaware non-stop and reaching out to conservatives across the country for support. I met her on Saturday at a grass-roots gathering of Moms 4 America in Washington, D.C. Castle refuses to debate her and has resorted to sneaking in and out of local GOP meetings to avoid her. He has bagged out on four scheduled GOP primary debates, most recently one sponsored by the League of Women Voters. The establishment Republican fund-raising organizations are sticking by their big government brother. Perhaps the greatest validation of the Christine O’Donnell challenge to Castle comes not from conservatives, who can be expected to support her, but from liberal Huffington Post political blogger Sam Stein who, although obviously disagreeing with her politics, has given her credibility with his coverage of that “Little Alaska” election: The results have not even been finalized in the quirky Alaska Republican Senate primary and already the political world is bracing itself for another instance in which an out-of-nowhere Tea Party candidate derails the highly-favored establishment contender. On Monday, Democratic and Republican operatives alike expressed interest and consternation (respectively) over the possibility that Rep. Mike Castle (R-Del.) could be the next victim of the purity purge inside the GOP tent. Christine O’Donnell has, by and large, campaigned outside the media and political spotlight so far this election. But on Monday her efforts to take out Castle in the mid-September primary got a major boost when the Tea Party Express, which spent roughly $600,000 on Alaska Republican Joe Miller’s challenge to Sen. Lisa Murkowski, pledged to do the same on her behalf. One question is whether the Republican establishment hasn’t learned its lesson and is trying to take out O’Donnell in favor of Castle. Stein offers this intriguing tidbit: Perhaps the strongest indication that O’Donnell has people wary if not worried was an e-mail late on Monday sent by a Republican operative to the Huffington Post with a quizzical bit of background research on the Tea Party candidate. O’Donnell, it appears, has no discernible steady form of income. The eyes of the political world are sure to be focused on Delaware aka “Little Alaska” on September 14. Even liberals are taking note of the power of the Tea Party movement in this election season. Note: Any writers, pundits, or blogosphere writers out there using the term “Little Alaska” when referring to the Delaware primary election, please be sure to send royalty payments to your humble correspondent who originated the term in reference to this election. Failing that, at least a story credit with link would be appreciated.

Newsweek ‘Thought Experiment’: Why Not Cut Alaska Loose From the Union?

Back in September 2008, MSNBC’s Chris Matthews floated a specious allegation that then-Governor Sarah Palin had ties to an advocate of Alaskan secession named Joe Vogler. Although the charge was roundly discredited, it was one of the many early attempts to smear Palin as a wacky extremist. Two years later, it appears at least one writer for a liberal magazine thinks Alaskan secession would be a fun little topic to bat around the Web. ” Thought Experiment: Should Alaska Secede From the U.S.? ” asked the headline for Daniel Stone’s August 18 The Gaggle blog post at Newsweek.com: August is slow around Washington, so we figured it’d be high time to toss around the idea of kicking Alaska out of the union—or the state leaving on its own accord. The reason? Those darn Alaskans are too conservative, too critical of federal government intrusion, yet they are net recipients of federal aid from Washington spending: A New York Times report from today points to the reason why: Alaskan politicians love to slam Washington for its over-the-top taxes, spending, and regulation of the state’s hefty reserves of natural resources. But when it comes to Washington giving back, Alaska is happy to take more money per capita than any other state. As of May, the Last Frontier, as it’s called, accepted $3,145 of stimulus funding per resident—money, mind you, that one of its senators and its sole member of Congress voted against. That’s not to say all Alaska lawmakers turn up their noses at D.C., but with one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country—7.9 percent, which is still high, but not as high as, say, Michigan at 13.1 percent—there’s an implicit question of how much Alaska needs Uncle Sam, and how much Uncle Sam needs Alaska. If the 49th state were to leave the union, the impact would be, at first, economically devastating, according to Gov. Sean Parnell. But over time, could Alaska, by taking control of its own regulation over oil and gas, open the state for new business, perhaps allowing it to boom in a way that, until now, Washington has apparently stifled? Let’s hear what you think. Open forum below.  This sudden academic interest in secession wouldn’t have anything to do with Palin Derangement Syndrome on the part of the media, would it?

Gay Bar Proposed Next to Ground Zero Mosque

In what could be a serious proposal or a thought exercise, libertarian commentator Greg Gutfeld wants to see if the tolerance expressed by proponents of the Ground Zero mosque extends to welcoming a bar that caters to Islamic gay men next door. Gutfeld, who supports the controversial project that would include a mosque and cultural center at the site of the 9/11 attacks, said Monday that he had pitched investors his idea for the gay bar, which would serve non-alcoholic drinks to accommodate the Muslim faith. He said he wants to reduce homophobia in the Muslim world while making sure that the mosque builders are not hypocritical. “Bottom line: I hope that the mosque owners will be as open to the bar, as I am to the new mosque,” writes Gutfeld at The Daily Gut. “After all, the belief driving them to open up their center near Ground Zero, is no different than mine.” Gutfeld, the host of Red Eye w/ Greg Gutfeld on Fox News, was rated as an antigay voice in 2008 by GLAAD for his comments about the pregnancy of trans man Thomas Beattie. added by: TimALoftis

Google and Verizon Propose Two-Tiered Internet System

In technology news, Google and Verizon have issued a proposal that could radically restructure the internet by essentially creating a two-tiered internet system. At first glance, the Google and Verizon proposal appears to promote the idea of net neutrality, that users should have equal access to all types of information online. But the Google and Verizon proposal includes a massive loophole that would exempt from net neutrality protections all internet access over cellphone and wireless networks and any future new subscription services that broadband providers could offer. Jason Rosenbaum is with the Progressive Change Campaign Committee. Jason Rosenbaum: “The Google and Verizon deal announced today is the first step towards corporate control over the internet. They propose creating two tiers of internet service: a public version of the internet that everybody will be able to use without fear of discrimination and then a private version that the big corporations will control absolutely. And that’s the version that they are likely going to put all of their investment in. So when it comes down to it, people in America will have a choice: they’ll be able to use the corporate-controlled internet, where they’ll get their information from corporate sources very quickly, or they’ll be able to use the, quote-unquote, 'public internet,' and that’s going to be relegated to the slow lane.” Craig Aaron of the group Free Press says the Google plan could permanently shift who controls the internet. Craig Aaron: “The beauty of the internet is that you’re able to get online, go wherever you want, do whatever you want, download whatever you want. And if you’re a content creator, then you have the opportunity to have the reach of a television station or a radio station or a cable channel. All you have to have is that good idea or something interesting to say. But if you change the way the internet works, if you reserve that fast lane just for a few select companies, that opportunity goes away.” Jason Rosenbaum of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee says he also has concerns about the impact of the Google-Verizon proposal on free speech online. Jason Rosenbaum: “We’ve already seen how corporate control over networks can lead to political discrimination. So, there was a text message sent out by NARAL Pro-Choice that was blocked by wireless carriers, because the wireless carriers disagreed with the message. When you have internet activities or various online activities running on a corporate-controlled network, you’re opening the door to these kinds of censorship. It’s very much a free speech issue, very much a civil rights issue. http://www.democracynow.org/2010/8/10/headlines#2 added by: treewolf39

Plane Crash Kills Ex-Senator Ted Stevens and Possibly Ex-NASA Cheif Sean O’Keefe

A plane crash in Alaska may have claimed the life of one of the state's former senators, as well as a former head of NASA. Former Republican U.S. Senator Ted Stevens was aboard a plane that crashed in Alaska, a congressional source told Reuters on Tuesday. The Associated Press also reports that former NASA Administrator, Sean O'Keefe, was on board. Nine people are believed to have been aboard in total, five of whom died, and Alaska National Guard spokesman Maj. Guy Hayes said. It is unclear if O'Keefe is among the survivors. Stevens was confirmed dead by friends. Hayes said The Air Force 11th Rescue Coordination Center, which is operated by the Alaska National Guardsmen, was called to the area about 20 miles north of Dillingham at about 7 p.m. Monday after a passing aircraft saw the downed plane. But severe weather has hampered search-and-rescue efforts. Several people who were in the area are at the sight of the crash, the Anchorage Daily News reports. “They're not out there alone right now. There's people that are providing support,” Hayes said. “From what I'm told, there are survivors on this aircraft. I don't know how many could be fatalities at this point.” Medical personnel are also at the scene, the Air National Guard said in a statement. Stevens served in Congress for 60 years and was its longest-serving Republican senator. He lost his bid for re-election in 2008. http://www.businessweek.com/news/2010-08-10/stevens-dead-in-alaska-plane-crash-f… http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/8c/Ted_Stevens_109th_picto… http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/2010/08/10/2010-08-10_former_sen_ted_st… added by: EmperorThan
