Rick Ross ‘Teflon Don’ Moniker Criticized By Mobster’s Family

‘My grandfather paid his dues for that nickname,’ Carmine Agnello says of the late John Gotti. By Mawuse Ziegbe Rick Ross’ Teflon Don Photo: Def Jam After scoring several acquittals throughout the ’80s, reputed New York mobster John Gotti was nicknamed the “Teflon Don” because of his apparent inability to get convicted. Decades later, Miami MC Rick Ross has adopted the moniker for the title of his latest album; however, a member of Gotti’s family is not happy with the use of the late mob boss’ handle. “He should have asked for permission,” Gotti’s grandson Carmine Agnello told the New York Daily News. “A stand-up, respectable guy would come and ask, ‘If I could use the nickname.’ ” Agnello also implied that lifting the mob boss’ moniker was an unoriginal choice on Ross’ part. “I think he’s a great artist, but you can’t just start calling yourself that to sell records,” Agnello said. “He wants to go for that whole image, but hey, be yourself.” Agnello added, “My grandfather paid his dues for that nickname. That was my grandfather’s life.” Agnello also took a dig at Ross’ controversial pre-rap career as a prison guard and said, “Only in America can you go from being a corrections officer to calling yourself Teflon Don.” A rep for Ross did not respond to MTV News’ request for comment at press time. Although the moniker is often associated with the headline-making mob honcho, Ross said the title has personal significance. “A lot of people don’t know Teflon Don was my original rap name,” Ross told MTV News in January . “So it’s coming back around full-circle.” While Agnello has taken issue with Ross’ adoption of the Teflon Don title, it’s not the first time the Miami MC has woven notorious gangster references into his hip-hop persona. Ross recently released the mixtape, The Albert Anastasia EP, the title of which is a nod to another New York mobster. Ross was also reportedly sued by the infamous drug pusher Ricky Ross for . Regardless of the accusations being lobbed the MC’s way, Ross has said that he’s trying to top his previous work with his latest effort. “Myself, I try to get better and better with every rhyme I make — every rhyme I bring to the table, I want to make sure it’s more potent than the last,” Ross said. “I’m setting this album, Teflon Don, to be the album of my career.” Related Artists Rick Ross (Hip-Hop)

Taylor Swift Reveals Next Album, Speak Now, Is Due October 25

‘Each song is a different confession to a different person, and I’m very excited for you to hear them,’ singer says during live chat. By James Dinh Taylor Swift Photo: UStream During a live chat Tuesday (July 20), fans were treated to some surprising news when Taylor Swift revealed that her new album, Speak Now, would be hitting stores October 25. The songstress also spoke about the album’s first single, “Mine,” shooting a video for the new song and how excited she is to share some of her life experiences from the past year. “It’s called Speak Now, and that pertains to the album as a concept and as an entire theme of the record more than I can even tell you,” Swift said during the Ustream chat , which eventually reached 58,000 viewers. “I’ve been working on it for two years, so ever since we put out Fearless, I’ve been writing for this record and sort of conceptualizing it and putting it together in my head and sort of figuring out what I want it to be,” she added. “I like to take a lot of time in between albums to work up the next one and see what it is.” The album, which Swift explained was written solely by her and is tentatively set to include 14 tracks, is full of firsthand experiences. “For me, I write everything that I live, so you got to give yourself a little bit of time to live a lot of things so you can write about a lot of things, and my only option is to write about what I’ve been through and what I’ve lived, so thankfully, in the past two years, I’ve experienced a lot of things that I’ve been dying to write about and a lot of things that I wanted to say in the moment that I didn’t,” she explained. “Mine,” which is set to premiere in mid-August, is about Swift’s “tendency to run from love.” “It’s been sort of a recent tendency, and I think it’s because, for me, every really direct example of love that I’ve had in front of me has ended in goodbye and ended in breakups and things like that,” she explained. “So I think I’ve developed this pattern of running away when it comes time to fall in love and stay in a relationship. The song is sort of about finding the exception to that and finding someone who would make you believe in love and realize that it could work out, because I’m never ever going to go past hoping that love works out.” Later in the chat, Swift spoke about filming the video for “Mine,” and while she didn’t speak about the clip’s concept, she did gush about the “gorgeous” location — even admitting that she’d love to live there one day. Earlier this month, the pop star was photographed shooting a wedding scene dressed in a cream gown and arm-in-arm with her groom. She was later spotted kissing the groom while boating on a lake in another scene. The singer spoke about a song called “Sparks Fly” that she’s performed on very few occasions, confirming that it will be included on the forthcoming album. “I played that song at one or two shows, and you guys really jumped on it and made it something I had to put on the album, because you guys really showed interest in it.” Aside from moving into her very own place, Swift told fans that she plans to tour after she releases the album. Back in May, the singer told MTV News that she was well under way with the project, citing “boys and love” as the album’s main inspirations. “I’ve been writing it for the last two years, so this summer it’s all about the finishing touches and getting in there in the studio and recording the last couple songs,” she said. M.I.A. ‘Didn’t Care About’ New Album, Diplo Says

‘All she has is a bunch of yes men around her and they kinda suck,’ producer tells BlackBook magazine. By Gil Kaufman M.I.A. Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic The last time producer Diplo was quoted talking about M.I.A. ‘s ///Y/&#92 album, he got caught in an Internet sinkhole when he referred to the noisome disc as a “turd” in joking response to a question from a fan about what sounded like a toilet flushing on the song “Tell Me Why.” He shrugged off that controversy, saying that the many music blogs that quickly headlined his slam of his collaborator’s music were “trippin’.” Diplo has since made a number of controversial remarks about the album and how it represented a breach in the once-close musical relationship he had with M.I.A., implying that he felt a bit locked out this time around. But in a new interview with BlackBook magazine , Diplo pulls no punches, making it very clear that he is not onboard with the sound of the album. “She didn’t care about it. I was in the studio with her, she didn’t write anything,” he said of M.I.A. “Me and [collaborator] Switch tried our best to be quality control of the record and she didn’t want that. She kind of went on her own way … I was like, Look, nobody in your crew — we were the only people she could trust, and our asses were on the line too. We got here because of working with people like her. We care about the way things sound, and when the people that she works with don’t, then it’s f—ed up.” Of course, Diplo was not naming names, and he noted that “she’s got talent in every aspect,” praising M.I.A.’s big ideas and ability to make things happen, but he lamented that the singer may have fallen into the usual trap of surrounding herself with sycophants. “All she has is a bunch of yes men around her and they kinda suck,” he said. “I burned like 20 bridges with her. I build my own bridges, it doesn’t matter. I’m honest. As soon as she comes to terms with what she does then we can work again. One of us has to be like, We f—ed up, and then we can do it again.” Last month, Diplo told MTV UK that M.I.A. “didn’t want to put any of my records on it like last time. She will do anything to discredit me.” And in the BlackBook interview, he added that he was a bit shocked at some of the backlash M.I.A. has gotten over the album. “I am surprised by it,” he said. “She like, retired because she married a dude and she didn’t care about music. She only did it again because ‘Paper Planes’ did blow up in the end. It gave her a second wind, but she didn’t have any hunger anymore. She already got a full table … but besides that I think she’s amazing and she’ll put another record out that’s going to be f—in’ sick because I think she needs to get grounded at some point.” For her part, the outspoken singer seems to have taken the high road and has not shot back at Diplo so far, recently telling MTV News that she’s very proud of the “3-D” sound of the album, saying she likes the aggressive, rattling drill bit effects on tracks like “Steppin’ Up.” Spokespeople for Diplo and M.I.A. could not be reached for comment at press time. Rick Ross Tells The Story Behind Drake’s Extended ‘Aston Martin Music’

Ross tells Mixtape Daily we might see the unofficial track on a Teflon Don re-release. By Shaheem Reid Rick Ross Photo: MTV News The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive Rick Ross’ Teflon Don LP came out Tuesday (July 20), and by now, if you’ve been listening to the radio and the mixtapes, you’ve already heard the extended version of “Aston Martin Music,” a highlight of the project. The track features Chrisette Michele and Drake sharing hook duties. On the extended version, which is not on the album, Drake adds a rap verse. Ross stopped by our 1515 headquarters on Monday to explain Drizzy’s extra vocals. “It boils down to me having the idea, the concept,” Ross said. “Shout-out to J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League. I got the production from the J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League. I wanted to do something else, two-seater music. That’s what I like to call it when it’s personal music for you and that special female that’s riding shotgun in a two-seater. Chrisette Michele, she was on ‘Mafia Music 2.’ She came to Miami to film the video. I got her in the studio to do the first half of this idea I had, which is ‘Aston Martin Music.’ She was like, ‘What you mean just do half of the chorus?’ I was like, ‘Yeah, just do half. I’mma save the other half.’ ” Trusting Ross’ direction, the singer got in and laid the vocals we hear today: “Riding to the music, this is how we do it/ All night/ Racing down the freeway/ Just me and my baby/ In our ride.” “She loved the beat. She wrote her lyrics,” Ross continued of Michele’s session for “Aston Martin.” “It took her 10, 15 minutes to cut her vocals. I’m sitting there like, ‘Wow. All right, all right.’ At that point, I didn’t know who was gonna sing the second half.” The Bawse said listening to Drake’s new album, in his leisure time, inspired him to make that call to his friend from Toronto. “I sent it to the homie,” the Miami rap lord described. “He laced me. Right then, he was ready to jump on his verse. Right then, he was ready to cock and load. I was like, ‘I know you finishing your joint. Just give me that half a chorus, and I’mma make it do what it do. He loved the record. I got it back. He laced it at the point. When he heard [the finished version], it was magic. He was like, ‘I’m finnin’ to go in the studio, Ross. I’mma need to get on that.’ ” A version of the song with just an extended chorus and Drake’s verse called “Paris Morton Music” came out shortly after “Aston Martin Music” leaked to the Net almost two weeks ago. “I talk slicker than a pimp from Augusta,” Drake raps on the track. Then, one of Ross’ engineers mixed Drake’s verse and extended chorus with the album version of “AMM,” and that song has lived on the Net and mixtapes ever since. It’s also getting play on the radio. Ross said he has no problems with an unofficial extended version of “AMM” being out. He might even include it on a repackaging of Teflon Don in the future. “It’s only right,” Ross said. “I got on [Drake’s] first single [‘Find Your Love’]. He even put a twist on the title after some sexy ladies, I believe. It made it feel good. That’s what that music is about. On that re-release, that deluxe packaging, that’s what you may get. You never know.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines or follow the Mixtape Daily team on Twitter: @shaheemreid and @mongosladenyc . Busta Rhymes Is ‘Indecisive’ About The Chemo Album Title

‘The album is pretty much at the 85, 90 percent mark,’ rapper says of upcoming LP. By Shaheem Reid Busta Rhymes Photo: MTV News Busta Rhymes is sure about the music. He’s just not sure about the album title. The New York veteran has the heater “Stop the Party” with Swizz Beatz out right now; he just dropped the remix featuring Ghostface, T.I., Cam’ron and DMX; and a video directed by Hype Williams is on the way. Both are from his upcoming LP, which he was going to call The Chemo, but now he’s having second thoughts. “To be honest with you, to clear it up, I haven’t given the album title a title yet,” he explained to MTV News recently. “I think what’s creating the back and forth is that I officially had the name of the album as The Chemo, but the selected few ears that I trust that have come in the studio, that heard the [new] album, they have been declaring that’s it’s developing into something that’s feeling like what Extinction Level Event felt like. I thought that was an unbelievable honor to hear that coming from the opinions of the ears that I trust and respect. As artists, you wanna, make sure the co-sign is a never ending co-sign, whenever you’re at a point that you’re ready to share your music or your body of work with the ears that you trust. It felt good to hear that. “For me, I still was leaning towards The Chemo, ” he added. “But the way I’m getting beat up about it, I’m now at an indecisive place. We always try to appease and cater to what the demand is, what the people want. I’m still working. The album is pretty much at the 85, 90 percent mark. Between now and the next three to four weeks, we’re gonna be able to give some confirmation on what it’s gonna be. Stay tuned.” Do you think “The Chemo” is a good album title? Usher Gets Steamy In ‘There Goes My Baby’ Video

R&B heartthrob goes shirtless in sexy new clip released online Tuesday. By Jayson Rodriguez Usher’s “There Goes My Baby” Photo: LaFace/ Jive Usher has taken on critics who say he’s lost his swagger. And with a new video for his single “There Goes My Baby,” the singer continues to push back at detractors who dare to suggest he’s slipped. His last single, the Will.I.Am-produced “OMG,” is still riding high on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, currently resting comfortably in the #3 slot. And now, he’s pushing his next number with a video for the slow-burning ballad “There Goes My Baby.” Released on Tuesday (July 13), the clip features Usher and his leading lady trading sweaty moves under a desert sun. In the opening scene, Usher has his back to the camera as the sun rises just over his right shoulder. The R&B crooner, sporting a black tank top and dark jeans, slowly pulls his love interest closer toward him in the next scene, and then ditches his tee as he sings to her. “There goes my baby,” he sings on the chorus. “Loving everything you do/ Ooh girl, look at you.” As the song’s climax begins, the pair unite once again and exchange kisses as the sun fades. “There Goes My Baby” is the latest from Usher’s Raymond v. Raymond, which the singer recently announced would be made available in two separate extended editions next month. Versus will feature eight new songs, including “DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love,” a Pitbull-assisted number that premiered on the singer’s website earlier this month. Usher will also release Raymond v. Raymond (The Deluxe Edition). That edition of the album will include tracks from Versus, as well as material from the original version of Raymond v. Raymond that had initially leaked online prior to his album’s official release and wasn’t included on the retail set. What do you think of Usher’s new video for “There Goes My Baby”? M.I.A. Says MAYA Is ‘A 3-D Album’

‘It’s not this one-dimensional, shiny pop album,’ singer says. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Akshay Bhansali M.I.A. Photo: MTV News It’s been called everything from her “most personal” effort and “a towering work” (link http://www.clashmusic.com/reviews/mia-maya) to an outright “turd” , but according to M.I.A. , her new ///Y/&#92 album is really just her … in 3-D form. “I think my album’s really diverse, because I tried to make a 3-D version of who I was. Maybe that’s because I made it in the year when everything was f—ing 3-D, like ‘The World Cup … in 3-D!’ ‘Toothpaste adverts in 3-D!’And I was like ‘Fine, I’ll make an M.I.A. album in 3-D,’ ” she told MTV News. “And … that’s what I did. Sonically, it’s a 3-D album, it’s not this one-dimensional, shiny pop album, or, like, f—ed up dub-step album. It’s just 3-D. You’re not always high all the time, going like, ‘Oh My God, life’s so great! [I’m] at the beach!’ It’s way more complex that that, and I think it has those levels in it.” And ///Y/&#92 (which hits stores Tuesday), is most certainly complex, an album of multi-tiered dissonance, of whoops and wails, squelches and scuzz. From the paranoid rattle of opening track “The Message” to the stoned-out babble of closer “Space,” M.I.A. and her cadre of producers (a team that, this time around, included not just frequent collaborator Diplo — he of the “turd” comment — but also Blaqstarr, Rusko and Switch) go to great lengths to pack the album with as much sonic detritus as possible … everything from pneumatic tools (on “Steppin’ Up”) to screaming jet engines (“Story To Be Told,”) with Suicide samples, handclaps, Tablas, Jamaican radio chatter, muffled gunshots and an army of power chords thrown in for good measure. It’s enough to make your head swirl … or possibly explode. And it sounds that way because, during the year-plus she spent working on the album, M.I.A. very much felt like she would explode, too. Barred from leaving the country, pregnant with her first child, watching her homeland of Sri Lanka slog through the last stages of a bloody civil conflict, she felt helpless, confused and downright frustrated by everything going on around her. And ///Y/&#92 is the sound of her inner turmoil. “The last album was more about the environment and where you ended up and the people you met … on this one, there was just so much going on in my own world, and in my own life — whether it’s personal or professional — [that] there’s just no room for all that stuff,” she said. “And I’m still working off things I’ve seen and been inspired by that I haven’t fully explored in my other two albums. And so, having all that, and then with all this extra sh– that was going on in my personal life, I think it worked out great that I couldn’t leave the country, and I was just, like, locked up in a cave. It gave me time and space to just puke all this stuff out that was going on in my own life.” So while it’s by no means easy listening, ///Y/&#92 isn’t supposed to be. Born out of intense personal strife, it represents M.I.A. at her most cathartic, her most detached, her most free. Does all of that make for radio-friendly pop? Not especially. Does it make for an absolutely compelling listen? Most definitely. “I couldn’t even register another human being, or another influence, or the scene and the music that’s going on outside. I’ve always been like that, I’ve always been out there … and been really connected to everything and everyone before,” she said. “And this was the first time I had to just take time out and I think this is the music that reflects all the stuff that was going on — sometimes it was confusing and sometimes it was great.” Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: M.I.A.
