M.I.A.’s ‘XXXO’ Video Hits The Web

Hype Williams-directed clip is much tamer than her controversial ‘Born Free’ video. By Nuzhat Naoreen M.I.A. Photo: Roger Kisby/ Getty Images When it comes to M.I.A., we expect a certain degree of controversy. After all, the singer is no stranger to releasing songs and videos packaged with a message. So when her “XXXO” video hit the Net on Wednesday (August 11), we were understandably surprised. The Hype Williams-directed clip for “XXXO,” which, as the title implies, is about being in love (although not necessarily happily), is a marked departure from her “Born Free” video. While “Born Free” set off a firestorm of criticism for its violence, “XXXO” is much tamer in nature and much more hypnotic in style. M.I.A. is front and center in the video, which has an ’80s feel and relies heavily on graphics of hearts and flowers. In fact, the video appears to put M.I.A. inside a digital greeting card — although her look in the video is much more seductive, as she wears her hair loose and wavy and packs on the thick red lipstick. Of course, the video is not completely without political symbolism. The artist, who previously showed her support for the Tamil Tigers with her song “Paper Planes,” also features two tigers. While the video for “XXXO” only premiered Wednesday, M.I.A.’s fans are likely already familiar with the song. A remix of the song featuring Jay-Z was released back in June, and the artist herself put out the original track (along with the rest of her album ) on her MySpace page in July. What’s Next For Fantasia After Overdose? PR Expert Weighs In

‘I don’t think this is a career-breaker,’ Howard Bragman tells MTV News of apparent suicide attempt. By James Montgomery Fantasia Barrino Photo: Larry Busacca/ Getty Images In the day since former “American Idol” winner Fantasia Barrino was rushed to a North Carolina hospital after an apparent suicide attempt, reaction from her fans has been mixed. Some have expressed their support for the singer, while others have criticized her for being “selfish,” given that she is the mother of a 9-year-old girl. While that criticism might seem harsh, it’s certainly par for the course, according to public-relations executive Howard Bragman, who has overseen the career rehabilitations of Isaiah Washington and Naomi Campbell. Barrino can’t worry about what some of her fans might think of her right now, he said, because she has to focus on her own health. And no matter how bad things seem right now, the forgiveness will come. “I think the number-one thing Fantasia has to do is heal. I think she has to get some psychological help, find out what brought her to this moment, and make sure it doesn’t happen again … that is number one,” Bragman told MTV News. “And once that’s under control, then you start to look at your projects on the horizon. You don’t give yourself this timetable. But assuming she’s well enough in a matter of weeks or months to promote her album or her projects, well, the reality is, we live in a very forgiving society. “We like rehab, we like rebirth, we like reconnecting with people,” he continued. “We’re willing to give people a second chance if they look us in the eye and [tell us] why they’re going on with their lives and why they deserve a second chance. I don’t think this is a career-breaker.” Speaking of that career, Barrino will eventually have to return her focus to upcoming projects, including a second season of her VH1 reality show “Fantasia for Real” in September and a new album, Back to Me, which is due August 24. When she finally does, she needs to prepare herself for an onslaught of questions about just what happened Monday. So the best possible strategy, according to Bragman, is to be proactive about things. “I think she’s certainly going to get asked the question about what happened. And if she were my client, I would do one or two very well-orchestrated interviews, possibly a print interview, a People magazine, and then a broadcast interview … and get it out there,” he said. “And then if you’re asked about it again, you say, ‘You know, I’ve really talked about that a lot, and I feel comfortable with what I said, and I’m here to promote my album’ to change the focus a little.” Bragman added that Barrino needs to take time for herself and only come back when she feels strong enough to do so. And when she does, he expects that her fans will welcome her back with open arms. “I think we go back to talent, and I think she’s got great talent, she’s got great heart and great spirit, and I think we want her to succeed,” he said. “I don’t think she’s one of those people we don’t want to see do well. … We’re on her side, and I think she’s going to feel the love when she goes back out there.” Where should Fantasia go from here? Young Jeezy Made ‘Jizzle’ ‘For My Fans’

‘Lil Jon was the extra spice to give it a different feel,’ he says of TM103 first single. By Jayson Rodriguez Young Jeezy Photo: Prince Williams/Getty Images Young Jeezy is set to release TM103 in September, and while the Atlanta rapper said he plans to step out of his usual box on the LP, for the first official single, “Jizzle,” he kept to his comfort zone. ” ‘Jizzle’ was my formula,” Jeezy told MTV News about the Lil Jon-featured track. “It’s like the music that I wanna hear when I’m in the club. I did that for my fans, before I even step out of my box, which I will for this album, as far as singles I wanted to do what I do. What comes to heart to me. And when I hear that [song], that’s Jeezy, that’s ‘Jizzle.’ Lil Jon was just the extra spice to give it a little different feel so it wouldn’t just be a Jeezy record. Jeezy is scheduled to deliver at least one mixtape before his album arrives: 1,000 Grams, Vol. 1, with DJ Scream, will drop online on Thursday. The first track from that collection, “Death B4 Dishonor,” arrived earlier this week and led to speculation the rapper was attacking labelmate Rick Ross in rhyme. On the song, Jeezy appears to be taking offense at Ross’ single “(B.M.F.) Blowin’ Money Fast,” on which the Miami rapper shouts out a notorious criminal organization that Jeezy has had some association with. While the lyrics appear to be directed at Ross, Jeezy spoke to MTV News on Tuesday and refuted the rumblings. “It’s not a dis,” Jizzle told us. “First of all, I’m not gonna get nothing out of dissing that guy. That’s one. What am I gonna get out of dissing him? I think sometimes people can read into things too deep. They trippin’, man. They crazy out there. Basically, if homie takes that as a dis, he’s insecure.” Are you excited to hear the rest of Jeezy’s mixtape this week? Tell us in the comments! Related Artists Young Jeezy

Jennifer Lopez Reportedly Out As Potential ‘American Idol’ Judge

‘Her demands got out of hand,’ a source told People.com. By Kyle Anderson Jennifer Lopez Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images After a flurry of “American Idol”-related news about two weeks ago (lead by Ellen DeGeneres giving up her seat behind the judges’ table ), things have been relatively quiet on the “Idol” front. When DeGeneres stepped away, rumors swirled that Jennifer Lopez was the top candidate to take the job (with Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler supposedly rounding out the roster). But according to People.com , Lopez’s name has been scratched from the list of potential candidates. “Her demands got out of hand,” a source told the site. “Fox had just had enough.” If this development proves to be true, it leaves one of the most popular shows on television still in a chaotic transition period. Show creator, executive producer and lead judge Simon Cowell has checked out in order to focus on his new program, “X-Factor.” Meanwhile, DeGeneres has already exited and rumors continue to suggest that Kara DioGuardi has also judged her last contestant on “Idol.” Though original executive producer Nigel Lythgoe is back in the fold (and wants to bring back Paula Abdul), the future of the show remains decidedly up in the air. With Lopez theoretically out, maybe the producers should consider Mariah Carey . According to her husband, Nick Cannon, Cary has talked about the possibility of working on the show (where she has served as a guest mentor in the past). “She says, ‘I would love to do that.’ She is one of the greatest singers of our time; she would be great,” Cannon told The Hollywood Reporter. “I don’t know if she has enough time, though, but if they could work with her schedule, I know she would love to do ‘Idol.’ Let’s start the campaign!” Meanwhile, preparation continues on the upcoming 10th season of “American Idol.” Auditions are taking place in Austin, Texas, Wednesday (August 11) and are scheduled for San Francisco on August 19. The new season will premiere on Fox on January 12, 2011. Who would you like to see behind the judges’ table on “American Idol”? Let us know in the comments! Lady Gaga Explains Lollapalooza Crowd-Surfing

‘I don’t know what came over me,’ Gaga says of crashing Semi Precious Weapons set. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga crowd-surfs with Semi Precious Weapons’ Justin Tranter on Friday at Lollapalooza Photo: Bronques at Last Nights Party Last week in Chicago, Lady Gaga felt the power of Lollapalooza overtake her when she jumped onstage with her pals the Semi Precious Weapons and decided to crowd-surf . It was a moment her “little monsters” eagerly welcomed. On Wednesday (August 11), she called in to Ryan Seacrest’s radio show and explained that she hadn’t planned it; she just really wanted to crowd-surf. “I was so excited ’cause I haven’t crowd-surfed in a long time ’cause no one lets me anymore,” Gaga said. “It was great,” she continued. “I love Semi Precious so much and they’re my band … I don’t know what came over me. I just got so excited and I remember playing that stage and what it felt like and they were doing such a great job. … I just jumped.” The Semi Precious performance isn’t all that’s gotten Gaga all jumpy lately. The recent overturning in California of Prop 8 banning same-sex marriage was also inspiring to her. “I felt like it was a revolution, a gunshot went off. It was so exciting when it happened. For me, it was a moment that indicates it can happen in every state now,” she said. Gaga was so excited by the ruling that she decided to pen more music. “I was so happy, and I went right into the studio and I kept writing,” she said. “[My album] kind of is done, but I can’t stop writing music. I don’t know what I’m going to do. I might have to put out two records.” Gaga didn’t spill too many beans about the next album but noted that she already had a thesis of sorts for it. “I never stop writing, so even when my album’s done, I’m always working,” she explained. “When I put this album together, I wanted to write the album in an innovative way. I want the message to be innovative. I already have the sonic ideas and the message ideas. … I basically asked friends of mine to produce the record with me, and we’re called the banditos.” What was your favorite Lollapalooza moment? Kanye West’s ‘Power’ Video Is ‘Timeless,’ Director Says

The clip, which premieres Thursday on MTV, is ‘a video portrait of Kanye as a symbol of power,’ Marco Brambilla tells MTV News. By Steven Roberts Kanye West Photo: Dominique Charriau/WireImage Kanye West’s “Power” video , which premieres Thursday at 11 p.m. on MTV, was a collaboration between the outspoken rapper and artist Marco Brambilla. Brambilla is currently working on a nine-video installation for an early 2011 video retrospective at the Santa Monica Museum in California, but it was his “Civilization” installation at New York’s Standard Hotel that first captured West’s attention . MTV News caught up with the artist Wednesday afternoon (August 4) over the phone, and he said West told him the Standard installation was similar to something he would post on his blog . “He loved the installation,” Brambilla said. “What he likes to feature on his blog — and he featured it on his blog when it first came out — it’s kind of interdisciplinary. Whether it’s photography or video or sculpture or fashion, he’s very interested in exposing the ‘best of the best’ or what appeals to him the most. He had never seen anything that complex, and the video collage technique that I developed for it was a brand-new thing.” Brambilla said West appreciated the project’s themes of sexuality and religion, along with its overall “epic” quality. While Brambilla typically shies away from collaborations, he admired the similarities in their approaches. But it wasn’t until Brambilla heard West’s yet-untitled new album that he decided to direct “Power.” “I instantly connected to the themes on the album,” Brambilla said. “The whole idea of celebrity, the idea of power, the idea of sensuality in it, there’s sexuality in it as well, and those were all kind of themes that I’ve explored in my work before. Once I heard the album, that was what clinched it, and I felt very much in tune with the message behind the music. “And then specifically with the single ‘Power,’ I’ve always wanted to do something that would visualize power, to do a portrait of what power would look like in a sort of timeless way and being able to have him framed in that portrait — essentially doing a video portrait of Kanye as a symbol of power was very consistent with my art practice and what I explore in my artwork.” Will you be tuning in Thursday night to watch Kanye’s new video? Taylor Swift To Perform New Single On CMA Special In September

Swift will sing ‘Mine,’ from her upcoming Speak Now album. By Jocelyn Vena Taylor Swift Photo: Jason Kempin/ Getty Images Fans might be anxiously awaiting the October 25 release of Taylor Swift’s new album, Speak Now , but they shouldn’t have to wait too much longer to hear Swift perform the album’s first single, “Mine.” Swift is expected to perform the track on the TV special “CMA Music Festival: Country’s Night to Rock.” Swift secretly taped the show last month in Nashville when she was performing at the CMA Music Festival, according to People.com . The special, which will be hosted by Tim McGraw, will air on September 1 on ABC. Other performers scheduled to appear include Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban, Miranda Lambert, Rascal Flatts, Brad Paisley and Reba McEntire. Swift has been busy as of late prepping for the release of the album, a follow-up to her highly successful album Fearless . The video for “Mine” has been shot, with British actor Toby Hemingway playing Swift’s love interest in the clip and Swift donning a wedding dress. As for the song, Swift has said it’s all about her love life. “It’s been sort of a recent tendency, and I think it’s because, for me, every really direct example of love that I’ve had in front of me has ended in goodbye and ended in breakups and things like that. So I think I’ve developed this pattern of running away when it comes time to fall in love and stay in a relationship. The song is sort of about finding the exception to that and finding someone who would make you believe in love and realize that it could work out, because I’m never, ever going to go past hoping that love works out,” she explained. Like the song, the new album will have a theme. “For me, I write everything that I live, so you’ve got to give yourself a little bit of time to live a lot of things so you can write about a lot of things. And my only option is to write about what I’ve been through and what I’ve lived. So thankfully, in the past two years, I’ve experienced a lot of things that I’ve been dying to write about and a lot of things that I wanted to say in the moment that I didn’t,” she explained. “I’ve been working on it for two years, so ever since we put out Fearless, I’ve been writing for this record and sort of conceptualizing it and putting it together in my head and sort of figuring out what I want it to be,” she added. “I like to take a lot of time in between albums to work up the next one and see what it is.” Related Artists Taylor Swift

Drake Reveals His Biggest Thank Me Later Regrets

The rapper laments one early leak and two songs he wishes were on the album. By Jayson Rodriguez Drake Photo: MTV News One of the most ambitious tracks on Drake ‘s Thank Me Later is The-Dream duet “Shut It Down,” a sweeping number about seduction that clocks in at nearly seven minutes. Unfortunately for Drake, an unfinished version of the song leaked three months before the release of his debut album. The final product is a slow-grinding effort that comes to a climax with a Drake rap after the pair croon throughout their respective verses. A second leak, “Darlin’ ” featuring Lil Wayne, and the “9 AM in Dallas” freestyle, an urgent battle-style rap — both of which were recorded after Thank Me Later ‘s deadline — are pretty much the only faults Drake found with his debut. “The saddest part to me is that I would have made ‘9 AM in Dallas’ the intro for the album, but I did it the day of mastering, which is crazy, so it couldn’t make the album,” Drake told MTV News. “That’s probably my greatest upset, was the fact that it couldn’t be on the physical disc and be a part of that album. ‘Darlin’ ‘ was a loss just because it was never mixed, and every time I hear it in the club, you can never really hear the words. I think the words are the best part of that song. I think Wayne painted such a vivid picture. I tried to come in and add my little two cents at the end. “Most of the music made it,” he continued. “Most of the music we held for a long time, and the stuff that did leak, it was pretty good references. It wasn’t anything I was too upset about. ‘Shut It Down’ leaking early was painful. I think it could have been a bigger record had it not been out there so long. And ‘Fall for Your Type’ I wish was on there, but I have other plans for that record, so it’s gonna be good.” Despite records leaking and the Toronto lyricist’s album arriving online before its June 15 due date, Drake told MTV News on the day of Thank Me Later ‘s release that he never considered changing his plans for putting the project out. “They tried to force me into a situation — I’m not sure if it was the label — [but] somebody tried to force me into a situation and drop the album June 9,” Drake said. “I really was like, ‘June 9 isn’t enough time to let them digest all the leaked music. If they got the music already, let’s let them listen to it. Let’s give them that two weeks to ride around to it and talk to their friends about it.’ ‘Cause that way, when they show up to the store, there’s no pressure — you know what you’re buying. You’re just going to support an artist you love and music you believe in.” What do you think of Drake’s take on his debut album? Tell us in the comments, or tweet @MTVRapFix ! Related Artists Drake

Will Kanye West’s ‘Power’ Video Set The Tone For His Album?

For clues, MTV News takes a closer look at clips for ‘Ye’s previous first singles. By Steven Roberts Kanye West 10.10.2005 Photo: MTV News Despite his newfound penchant for social media, Kanye West has kept quiet about what’s in store for the video for his newest single, “Power.” MTV News gathered a few clues, including a look at the videos for his previous first singles, for hints about what fans might expect from his latest. A photo from the Marco Brambilla-directed “video project” hit the Web last Thursday and it featured a sullen-faced West wearing his oversize, gold Horus chain and standing between rows of columns. Still, West urged fans to not get too excited — via his Twitter. “Preview of the ‘Power’ Trailer, it’s just a still pic. Don’t get to[o] hype.” Naturally, everyone got hyped, and West tweeted a link to a New York Times article about Brambilla’s involvement with the project soon after. Brambilla described the video as “kind of apocalyptic, in a very personal way.” It remains to be seen how it will shape up, but it seems certain the clip will set the tone for his still-untitled fifth album. “Through the Wire” The video for West’s triumphant, Chaka Khan-sampled first single from his debut LP, The College Dropout, featured a bulletin board of Polaroids documenting ‘Ye’s recovery from a near-fatal car crash and early footage of West’s road to recognition. With his jaw still wired shut, West narrates the story of how his life-threatening accident fueled his fire as an MC. The video reflected the mood of West’s debut, which saw the Chicago native detailing his early struggles trying to get put on in hip-hop after being overlooked and underappreciated. West spent years behind the scenes, producing for the likes of Jay-Z, Mos Def and Beanie Sigel, but received little encouragement when it came to his dreams of rapping. It wasn’t until his accident, however, that even he began to give it his all. “Diamonds From Sierra Leone” Following the enormous success of College Dropout, West upped the ante with the video for “Diamonds From Sierra Leone.” The black-and-white, Hype Williams-directed video finds West riding around in a Mercedes-Benz in Prague. As he explores the city’s lavish architecture, he’s haunted by the sins of wealth in the form of children who’ve died mining diamonds in West Africa. The video reflects the creative steps forward that Kanye took on his second album, Late Registration. West collaborated with composer/producer Jon Brion on the project, which combined hip-hop production, string arrangements, horn riffs and piano. “Can’t Tell Me Nothing” West again reached out to Hype Williams for the video for “Can’t Tell Me Nothing.” The visual was filmed in the desert with West rapping to a track featuring some Young Jeezy ad-libs. The barren backdrop was perfect for the boastful song, as Graduation became the album on which West began to separate himself from the rest of the rap universe. Famously criticized for not having a street record, Kanye dropped “Can’t Tell Me Nothing” and it became not only an anthem for the streets, but nearly every MySpace page. It was during this period that West also topped 50 Cent in a much-hyped sales duel. Following the album’s release, MTV named ‘Ye 2008’s “Hottest MC in the Game” “Love Lockdown” In all honesty, the video for “Love Lockdown” may not have played as large a role in helping to set the tone for 808s & Heartbreak. West had lost his mother, Donda West , in 2007 due to complications from surgery and broke off his engagement to his fianc

Kaskade And Dragonette Vocalist Team Up For ‘Fire In Your New Shoes’

‘I wanted somebody who was on the pop-electro sound already,’ Kaskade says of choosing Martina Sorbara as his collaborator. By Akshay Bhansali Kaskade Photo: MTV News Earlier this year, progressive house-music producer Ryan Raddon — known to his fans around the world as Kaskade — found himself body-checking pop-music goliaths when his album Dynasty debuted at #5 on the iTunes album download charts, knocking Justin Bieber out of the top 10 that week. The album spent three consecutive weeks in the top 10, an indicator of popular music’s current appetite for faster beats per minute as well as a credit to Kaskade’s own skills. And while Dynasty features a mainstream dance collaboration with Dutch music titan Ti
