Eminem’s Recovery Dominates Billboard 200

Miley Cyrus’ Can’t Be Tamed debuts at #3, behind Drake’s Thank Me Later. By Gil Kaufman Eminem Photo: Kevin Mazur/ Getty Images Guess who’s back? Eminem is notching his sixth #1 album in a row with Recovery , which sold more than 741,000 copies last week. Those numbers dwarfed the figures for the all of the rest of the top 10 on next week’s Billboard 200 albums chart, as Slim Shady put up the best first-week numbers since 2008, far surpassing year’s other big debuts (Drake, Lady Antebellum, Sade). Proving once again that despite the album’s early leak, his fans will still come out to support the Detroit MC, Em’s massive haul pushes last week’s #1, Drake ‘s Thank Me Later down to #2. Sales for Drake’s debut cratered by 65 percent to 157,000, but the melodic Young Money MC still passed the gold mark in just two weeks, according to numbers provided by Nielsen SoundScan. Miley Cyrus had a rough landing for her more mature Can’t Be Tamed, which comes in at #3 on sales of 102,000, less than half of what 2008’s Breakout did in its debut week (371,000). And though he still hasn’t reached his goal of snagging a #1 debut on the U.S. charts, metal legend Ozzy Osbourne ‘s latest solo effort, Scream, lands at #4 after moving 81,000 copies. It’s followed at #6 by the chart bow from the Roots ‘ long-in-the-works How I Got Over (51,000). In a relatively slow week on the charts, the rest of the top 10 include: Now 34 (#5, 55,000), Jack Johnson ‘s To the Sea (#7, 44,000), Justin Bieber ‘s My World 2.0 (#8, 43,000), Sarah McLachlan ‘s Laws of Illusion (#9, 38,000) and the soundtrack to “Eclipse” (#10, 38,000). Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers ‘ Mojo crashes down nine spots in week two to #11, as sales dipped by 74 percent to 33,000. After 24 weeks in the top 10, Lady Antebellum ‘s Need You Now has dropped to #12 on sales of 32,000. Meanwhile, Christina Aguilera ‘s Bionic continues to struggle, as the singer’s latest slips out of the top 10 after just three weeks, dropping to #22 as sales trailed off by 54 percent to 18,000. One of Aguilera’s collaborators, singer Sia , debuts at #37 with We Are Born (11,000), while soul mama Macy Gray is right behind at #38 with Sellout (11,000). As the world marked the one-year anniversary of his death, Michael Jackson ‘s Number Ones collection rockets up more than 50 spots to #42 on sales of just under 10,000 (one of several Jackson titles to march back up the charts this week). Big Boi Gets ‘Live And Down To Earth’ In ‘Follow Us’ Video

‘It’s like a college frat party down in Savannah,’ MC says of clip for second Sir Luscious Left Foot single. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Kelly Marino Big Boi Photo: MTV News Next week, Big Boi is set to release the video for “Follow Us,” featuring Vonnegutt, the Atlanta MC told MTV News on the red carpet of the 2010 BET Awards. He’s already shot the clip, which is scheduled to premiere the visuals in time for the release of his album, Sir Luscious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty, next Tuesday (July 6). “Left foot, right foot, stepping over biters,” he raps over the track’s syncopated drums. “The game seems haunted/ ‘Cause there’s so many ghost writers.” “It’s just live and down to earth,” Big Boi said of the “Follow Us” video. “It’s like a college frat party down in Savannah, Georgia. Just riding through the city, having fun.” The number follows Big Boi’s current single, the Scott Storch-produced “Shutterbugg.” Sir Luscious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty is the OutKast rapper’s first proper solo offering; he and rhyme partner Andre 3000 released solo projects bundled into an group album with Speakerboxx/ The Love Below. Now, Big Boi isn’t entirely on his own: He’s got the help of T.I., B.o.B and Jamie Foxx on the LP. Andre 3000 was slated to have a prominent role on the project, particularly on the songs “Royal Flush” and “Lookin’ for Ya,” but OutKast’s label, Jive, blocked Dre from appearing on the Def Jam release. “Jive Records is trying to block 3 Stacks from being on the album. Boi Stop!!!!” Big Boi tweeted earlier this month. Big Boi spoke to MTV News in April about “Lookin’ for Ya,” which was produced by Boi-1da. “It’s me and Stacks, two verses apiece, back-to-back lyrical manslaughter,” Big Boi said of the collaboration. “Who’s better than the ‘Kast? Nobody.” Are you looking forward to more of Big Boi’s solo work? Would you rather OutKast got to work on new music together? Sound off in the comments. Related Artists Big Boi

Pill Went From ‘Zero To 60’ To Become ‘Hottest Breakthrough MCs Of 2010’ Candidate

Fans decide our ‘Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010′ — vote now! The winner will be revealed on July 25. By Shaheem Reid Phil Photo: Warner Bros. “Hottest Breakthrough MCs of 2010” Candidate: Pill Fourteen months ago, Pill had the trap going ham for his street pharmaceuticals. The young rapper struck gold when he dropped his rugged video for “Trap Goin’ Ham.” Rapping with a Corona in his hand, he showed women in his neighborhood smoking Newports and dudes rolling blunts. It was uncut, real and raw, and it gave you a flashback to that unflinching peak of ATL when some of the greats, such as Outkast and T.I., showed their lives in Georgia. Since then, Pill has become a favorite of hip-hop bloggers with his mixtapes 4180: The Prescription, 4075: The Refill and 1140: The Overdose. “It’s surreal, man. When you start off, you hope you can make it to this place,” Pill said of his growing popularity. ” 4180 was my first solo project ever. I went from zero to 60.” With that trilogy done, Pill is working on a brand-new tape, sans the medicinal theme, with DJ Holiday and the Empire. His debut LP should be dropping sometime in the fourth quarter or top of 2011. ” The Medicine, I’m working on it. I wanna make sure I don’t rush it. Once you get the deal, you feel like, ‘I gotta drop the album,’ ” Pill said. “I wanna make sure everything is new, everything is fresh. I got music for it. But I just wanna make sure all the feelings I go through, all the experiences, I wanna incorporate everything. Look forward to The Medicine. Not too many features. I don’t wanna crowd my first album with a bunch of features and make it a compilation CD. I want it to be more of me giving the people who I am and letting them see where I come from and hear my testimony.” Although the album is still being recorded, Pill said he has a keeper. It’s one of his most personal projects yet. ” ‘A Song for My Momma,’ ” Pill said when asked about a must-hear on his LP. “My momma passed away. I went in the studio, and I had been so stressed that week. That night, I was out clubbing, and I got a little tipsy. I was in New York. When I got back, I burst into tears. It caught up with me. I was like, ‘Damn, I’m actually doing what I told my momma I was gonna do.’ It was like, ‘Man, I gotta make her a song.’ I was supposed to make her a song, and I been running from it. I knew it was gonna take a lot of emotion and pain to do it. So when I got to the studio, I was boo-hooing still. My pages [that I write my rhymes on] was wet up, but I got through it.” Pill and 19 other up-and-coming MCs are in the running to become MTV News’ “Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010” — and the winner will be decided by you! Cast your vote for the “Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010” right here . The top five will be revealed beginning July 19, and the winner will be announced on the “Sucker Free Summit” July 25!

Bun B Says Tupac, Pimp C ‘Right Now’ Verses Feel ‘Natural’

‘We got a song that spans across three decades,’ UGK MC tells Mixtape Daily ; Trey Songz also guests on new track. By Shaheem Reid Bun B Photo: MTV News Cornerstone Credentials: UGK and Tupac Shakur Bun B knows he has an angel in his corner, with Pimp C looking down on him from up above. And Bun smiles as he talks about a record off of his upcoming LP, Trill O.G. The song features Pimp, Trey Songz and the late Tupac Shakur. The Port Arthur, Texas, legend says that it feels like a higher power intervened allowing the cut “Right Now” to come to fruition. “I don’t know, the big man was with us on this one,” Bun said of his late UGK partner, Pimp C, earlier this week in New York. “It was a song that was originally recorded in one version for a Tupac tribute album. Whatever reason, it didn’t make the [Tupac] album and ended up getting locked up in a vault. Somebody opened up the vaults and was like, ‘We got this record y’all did. Do you still want the record?’ We put some new music on top of it to get it back to a fresher feeling and give it more of a party vibe. When you listen to it, it really was a party record. [Producer] Steve Below put a real good beat behind it. I went in and did a fresh verse, got a new hook to it. “I always knew we would have to get somebody new to sing the hook because that ain’t my job. I’m an MC. We called up the young boy Trey, he was more than happy to fit us in his hectic schedule. He was getting ready to go out on the [ Blueprint 3 ] Tour. He worked it out for us. I think we put together something people are going to be playing for a long time.” Bun said the track also captures his UGK partner’s essence. “Anybody that knows Pimp’s personality, this is classic Pimp C — definitely talking about the ladies, definitely talking about getting money,” Bun said. “Same thing with Tupac; to me, this is the ‘Let Me See It’ Pimp C-meets-the ‘I Get Around’ Tupac. It’s a fun time had on this record. I think a lot of people will have a good time when they hear it. The craziest thing about this record is when you think about it, Tupac’s verse is from the ’90s. Pimp C’s verse is from the 2000s. My verse is from 2010. We got a song that spans across three decades and is just coming out now. And it’s gonna crush anything that’s out there. It sounds like we all literally came out the booth yesterday. It feels natural.” With such storied careers, it’s easy to imagine UGK and Tupac would’ve collaborated while Pimp and ‘Pac were still around, but oddly, Bun said they didn’t cross paths. “We never got to meet ‘Pac,” Bun said. ” ‘Pac got our album, I believe Edi [from the Outlawz] was saying, maybe two weeks before he passed away. Scarface gave Tupac the UGK Ridin’ Dirty album. ‘Pac went to Edi and said, ‘I don’t know who these dudes is’ — this is what Edi is telling us — ‘but they gonna be down with us. They talking about the same thing we talking about. These dudes is gonna be down with us, they on the same thing we on.’ It was crazy because Edi told us [Tupac] got the album and he was listening to it. And in one week, he lost two cousins. ‘One Day’ was a big record for him. Literally, one day [his cousins] were here, the next day they were gone. That [song] was something that helped them get through what he was going through at the time.” Trill O.G. comes out August 3, and besides features from ‘Pac and Pimp, Young Jeezy, Drake, Gucci Mane, LeToya Luckett, Yo Gotti and the aforementioned Trey Songz all appear on the LP. Drake Easily Notches #1 Debut With Thank Me Later

Early estimates show the album had the third-best first week sales of the year. By Gil Kaufman Drake Photo: Getty Images The Game may have been off by a bit when he predicted Drake would sell 650,000 in his first week, but according to preliminary figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan, Thank Me Later will debut very strongly on the Billboard charts. Drake Never Considered Changing Thank Me Later Release Date

‘If they got the music already, let’s let them listen to it,’ the Toronto MC recalls telling label after leak. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway Drake Photo: MTV News Back in April, Drake revealed June 15 would be the release date for his much-anticipated debut, Thank Me Later. But when his album leaked well before its expected delivery, the Toronto rapper was adamant that the album rollout plan remain unchanged. “They tried to force me into a situation — I’m not sure if it was the label — [but] somebody tried to force me into a situation and drop the album June 9,” Drake told MTV News earlier this week. “I really was like, ‘June 9 isn’t enough time to let them digest all the leaked music. If they got the music already, let’s let them listen to it. Let’s give them that two weeks to ride around to it and talk to their friends about it.’ ‘Cause that way when they show up to the store, there’s no pressure — you know what you’re buying. You’re just going to support an artist you love and music you believe in.” His strategy seemed to have paid off. Hundreds of fans lined up outside of a Best Buy store in Manhattan to meet the rapper, who showed up to greet them and sign their copies of Thank Me Later. “I got here at 3 in the morning,” Natalia Morales, the first female fan to meet Drake, told MTV News. “I’m ecstatic right now. I’m still shaking!” For his part, Drake is returning the “thank you” for all the adoration he’s received this week from fans, especially the die-hards who camped out overnight to buy his LP. “I have more than confidence in them,” he explained. “I have a relationship with them, I understand. I don’t ever for a second doubt them.” What do you think about Drake wanting fans to have time to enjoy his album once it leaked? Let us know in the comments! Sean Garrett Talks Finalizing Deal With Lil Wayne, New Mixtape

‘Wayne embraced me with open arms,’ singer/songwriter tells Mixtape Daily of Cash Money deal. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Jayson Rodriguez Sean Garrett Photo: Universal Don’t Sleep: Necessary Notables Mixtape : The Inkwell Headliner : Sean Garrett Key Collaborations : “She Geeked” (featuring Gucci Mane and Tyga), “Summer Love” (featuring Bun B and Yo Gotti) and “Girls on Girls” (featuring Lil Wayne and T-Pain) Essential Info : Sean “The Pen” Garrett always has to be on point, because he might have to switch modes at any given moment. The Grammy winner has his singer hat on one minute, then he has to get right back into his songwriter/producer duties when he gets a call from a T.I. or Rihanna or Jamie Foxx, who just took a song Sean wanted to keep for his own album. The Atlanta native said he doesn’t mind; he’s elated to be active. His next mixtape, The Inkwell, drops in a few weeks. ” The Inkwell is sort of like the album before the album,” Sean said recently in New York. “As a creative person, creative artist, you have to sort of spoon-feed your audience. I was an artist well before I became ‘The Pen.’ With all of that, a lot of people have had the opportunity to hear my music on other people. So sort of representing yourself as an artist, I want my albums to be classic but creative, where people are excited to hear my music. I want people to look at me as an artist as someone that’s fun and at the same time intricate, but at the same time not typical. ” The Inkwell is the introduction to Sean Garrett the artist, officially,” the crooner added. “The first single ‘She Geeked’ is real ill, real street, but sexy. All the ladies like it. It’s me, Gucci Mane and Tyga from Young Money. It’s just super swagged-out. My music … I don’t wanna call it R&B. It’s just swag music. If you can relate to the street, you can relate to my music. If you can relate to R&B, you can relate to my music. If you can relate to urban, you can relate to my music. If you can relate to mainstream, you can relate to my music. The Inkwell is a collaboration of great artists that I expect to create music. It gives people a great look on who Sean Garrett is. I got a smash with Rocko, smash with Roscoe Dash. Of course Gucci Mane, of course Lil Wayne, Bun B, Yo Gotti, Nicki Minaj. Should I stop? It’s real ill. The more I work on it, which I’m pretty much done, the more excited I get.” After The Inkwell drops, Garrett will be focusing on the launch of his album. He’s close to finalizing a deal with Cash Money Records. Lil Wayne brought the deal to the table before he went to prison. “I really got a lot of respect for Wayne,” Sean said. “Wayne embraced me with open arms before he went on a little vacation. He took me on tour with him. He was really open arms about rocking with him. He put me on the pilot seat going on right before him. I got a lot of respect for [Cash Money], because it represents where music is going as far as really believing in yourself and not just being in a box. Just creating your own style, your own movement and believing in your team. Cash Money is really family-orientated. I can bring a lot to Cash Money, in reference to what I do, developing their other artists, helping them to travel across the water. They’ve got artists they are trying to break internationally. It’s sort of a win/win situation.” Sean has been on the road, opening for Gucci Mane, and he said he’s about to go on tour with Cash Money/ Young Money family member Drake. Other Heat This Week

Rihanna Is Working On ‘Positive, Explosive’ Tracks With Sean Garrett

‘Her album is definitely gonna be way more exciting, happy,’ songwriter says. By Jayson Rodriguez Rihanna Photo: Fotonoticias/ WireImage Rihanna channeled her personal life into her last album, Rated R, a dark collection of songs that touched on her experience with former flame Chris Brown, who assaulted her just before the 2009 Grammys. For her follow-up, she and her collaborators are promising something more energetic . Rihanna recently told Elle that she’s much happier these days, and gushed about how her new beau, baseball player Matt Kemp, keeps her “sane.” And according to songwriter Sean Garrett , who has been in the studio with Rihanna recently, her new music reflects this state of mind. “I can definitely say that her album is definitely gonna be way more exciting, happy,” Garrett told MTV News. “I hope she doesn’t mind me saying this. I love Rihanna. She’s fun, she’s like a sister, and I tend to think she doesn’t really take herself too seriously. And I think that’s what this album is gonna be about. “Remember when Rihanna was just the little girl from the island and she was just having fun with ‘Pon de Replay’ and enjoying life?” Garrett continued. “It always seemed like, ‘Dag, she has that thing. ‘ And it wasn’t so serious until the incident happened. And everything became so serious. That’s just life. But I’m just happy to see her back. And I can definitely say the records that we’ve been working on are very positive and very explosive. Heavy in the club.” In addition to Garrett, producer David Guetta said he wants to work with Rihanna and help her revisit her “Umbrella” days. “Well, you know, I’m a DJ, so I make beats that make you want to dance,” Guetta told MTV News. “And I think she was one of the first to do that in that urban world, so you know, I think it would be good for her to do it again.” What musical direction would you like to see Rihanna go on her next album? T-Pain Says He Won’t Release His New Album Until Music Sales Pick Up

‘Ain’t nobody selling records unless you Susan Boyle,’ T-Pain tells MTV News. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by James “FLX” Smith T-Pain Photo: MTV News There was a time in recent pop-culture history when T-Pain and his Vocoder were virtually inescapable. You couldn’t turn on the radio, watch a hilarious viral video or tune into an awards show without getting an earful of T-Pain and his computerized twang. But in 2010, with albums sales still sluggish, T-Pain said he’s not putting out any new music until the tide turns. “I got the mastered version of my album in my car right now. But I’m not bringing my album out until these artists start selling records again, ’cause ain’t nobody selling records unless you Susan Boyle,” T-Pain told MTV News. Even though his website is promoting his forthcoming effort RevolveR, the collabo king insisted he’s going to fall back until album sales pick up. “I’m not doing nothing. I’m not bringing out no album, not dropping no more new singles until people start selling records again, and that’s the approach I think everybody should take unless you Susan Boyle or Miley Cyrus.” Pain said that, these days, artists who are not running things on the pop tip don’t really have a chance. “It ain’t really nothing else you can do. Any hip-hop artists, anybody coming from the South, we ain’t doin’ it,” T-Pain said. “Until everybody show and prove, I ain’t droppin’ no album.” While he’s holding back on his solo work, Pain is still collaborating and told MTV News about creating the track “My Own Step” with ATL’s Roscoe Dash for the soundtrack to the dance flick “Step Up 3-D.” “The song was for somebody else at first, and then they was asking … [T-Pain’s label] Nappy Boy: ‘Do we have some songs for the “Step Up 3-D” movie?’ ” said Pain, who sent songs featuring artists such as Sophia Fresh, Tay Dizm and One Chance. “They was like, ‘You got some stuff with you on it?’ I was like, ‘Yeah, here go a song right here.’ They came up to me like, ‘Roscoe Dash got on.’ I was like, ‘Yes! We got him!’ ” T-Pain said, adding, “I’ve been trying to do a song with Roscoe Dash for a long time.” Pain, who’s no stranger to hitmaking, said he was looking forward to working with the “Show Out” rapper, because he thought Dash brought something fresh to the game. “I’ve been living in Atlanta for, like, two and a half years … and I listen to the radio a lot, and they play all Atlanta. When Roscoe Dash’s song came on the radio, I was like, ‘Oh, thank you,’ ” Pain said. “It was just a relief. It was just something new.” Are you bummed that T-Pain is waiting to release new music?
