Coldplay Back In ‘Exploratory’ Mood During Rebooted Album Sessions

Mysterious band blogger promises ‘killer’ tunes on Viva la Vida follow-up. By Gil Kaufman Coldplay’s Jonny Buckland and Chris Martin Photo: Getty Images It’s one of the eternal challenges of the musician: to describe the sound you hear in your head and translate it into a song that will stir emotion in your fans. Even harder, though, is describing those songs before they are even halfway finished and trying to make sense of what they may turn into. In the case of Coldplay , that job currently falls to the mysterious “Roadie #42,” who has been posting infrequent updates on the band’s website , the latest of which promises that the tunes for their follow up to the world smash Viva la Vida will be full of, well, “killer” songs. Roadie, who revealed that his/her role has recently expanded to engineering the album, said a few of the lyrics from the band’s debut hit “Yellow” — “your skin and bones turn into something beautiful” — aptly describe the current process. “With the project getting something of a reboot after Latin America, they’ve been very much back in the exploratory phase again,” #42 wrote. “As described in the previous blog, there is a list of songs now and those songs have verses, choruses, riffs, lyrics and so on. These are the raw materials, though. Unrefined and rough, this is the record’s skin and bones, if you will. The ‘turning into something beautiful’ bit is the result of two methodologies.” Working again with Brian Eno , Coldplay have been tracking the album at their new studio in London and in Budapest, and after a recent tour of South America, #42 said they were recently back at work in earnest. Eno has tried to shake things up by forcing singer Chris Martin to work separately from his bandmates and then pairing the band’s members up at random to push the envelope. When last we checked in, the Roadie said rough mixes for a number of songs and a “possible running order” had already been written up. The first methodology is what Eno calls the “screwdriver work,” the craftsmanship and songwriting phase where everything is “tried and changed, analysed and re-appraised” in search of that special Coldplay magic. The second are the “happy accidents” that happen when someone is just noodling around or putting words from a different song onto a new arrangement. “Both things get the record made and neither can be invoked by attempting the other,” #42 wrote. “Sitting around waiting for inspiration doesn’t get the hard work done and long conversations and methodical approaches can waste hours when a single snap of brilliance can change everything in an instant.” While Eno has been popping in to check on progress, he’s also been leaving the band alone to get things done. “It’s been noted that he’s having as much effect on the record when he isn’t here as when he is. The band observed a little while ago that very often when they were working without him and getting stuck, they’d think of something that he would say and apply it, getting them ‘over the hump.’ ” In order to help, the band asked Eno to come up with a kind of Ten Commandments they could hang on the studio wall that would help them get out of musical dilemmas. The rules appear to be working, as Roadie described: “I’ve seen Chris on more than one occasion get halfway through playing something a little too flowery or ‘done before,’ before breaking down in laughter and shaking his head, saying, ‘All I can hear in the back of my head is Brian telling me off.’ ” The band is on break again for a few weeks, spending time with family, but not before a recent spurt of hard work that consisted of ” a real concerted effort to push every song to a place that everyone was excited about … Anything that’s not as great as the current favourite song gets strong focus. Problems get the spotlight so that they can’t hide. A verse that’s not flowing into the bridge gracefully can get a whole day’s attention — the screwdrivers have well and truly been out.” After weeks of tweaking the little details and only paying attention to the bits that don’t work, Roadie said the band is now taking a longer step back and “trying to objectively experience what they have made so far. I could be mistaken, but it genuinely felt as though there was real excitement spreading through the room. Perhaps it began to dawn on the fellas that what they have here is more than just a collection of intros, verses and choruses. “The songs haven’t assumed their final beautiful form yet, but they’re a very long way from their skin and bones phase. What’s impossible not to conclude, though, is that they have some absolutely killer tunes. I have no idea whether the fellas left for their break proud of what they’ve achieved so far and excited about what they have here, but I really hope so. They should be.” Though a spokesperson for the band could not be reached for comment at press time, Coldplay have said they’re aiming to have the new, yet-untitled album in stores by Christmas. ‘Drake: Better Than Good Enough’ Documentary Airs Next Week — Watch An Exclusive Preview Here!

Documentary chronicling MC’s rise to fame airs Wednesday, June 23, at 10 p.m. on MTV. By MTV News staff Drake in “Better Than Good Enough” Photo: MTV News Drake delivers his life in rhyme like few MCs ever have, and now the up-and-coming MC is set to pull the curtain back even further in “Drake: Better Than Good Enough,” a documentary chronicling the hip-hop wunderkind’s rise to fame. The program is set to air Wednesday, June 23, at 10 p.m. exclusively on MTV. “I have always been hesitant to share the details of my life with the world, but for the first time I am comfortable and confident that you will love this story,” Drake said of “Better Than Good Enough.” Cameras have been following the So Far Gone star since he kicked off his Away From Home Tour earlier this year. “Better Than Good Enough” also features Drake and his October’s Very Own team working hard to finish Thank Me Later, his highly anticipated debut album — which was released today — and at times it finds the young rapper struggling in intimate moments where he shares the details of his ever-changing life. We see Drake opening up about his relationship with his mother, a constant presence in his life whose love he says in unconditional; we see him admonishing his staff after a poor performance in Atlanta; and we see him he feverishly working to records last-minute vocals in time for his album’s deadline. “I’m juggling my album, my reputation as a performer, my health and my sanity,” Drake says in a clip available exclusively on MTVNews.com. “It escapes me a lot of times, how I’m even still going and how I’m gonna show up in Kansas City after working all night. It’s non-stop — you think you’re getting sleep but the sleep you’re getting isn’t really real, ’cause you’re so exhausted you’re catching up to tired. “My mom is sick,” he adds. “So that scares me a lot. She’s been the most supportive person I’ve ever had in my life — the only person that loves me unconditionally, really. I know a lot of people love me and I love a lot of people. But to love somebody unconditionally is different.” “Drake is a gifted artist whose authenticity is resonating with our audience,” said Dave Sirulnick, EVP, MTV Multiplatform, News & Music, and also an executive producer for the project. “We are thrilled that he allowed MTV the exclusive opportunity to document such an important and personal time in his life.” @radical.media is the production company for “Drake: Better Than Good Enough.” Justin Wilkes is producer; Michael John Warren is director. Jay-Z Remix Of M.I.A.’s ‘XXXO’ Hits The Net

Jay raps about metrosexuals and machine guns over first single from M.I.A.’s upcoming album. By James Montgomery M.I.A. and Jay-Z Photo: Kevin Mazur/ Getty Images It’s been a fairly quiet week for M.I.A. — no feuds with New York Times journalists , nary a “Google is a puppet of the CIA” conspiracy theory floated. But all that changed on Friday (June 11), when a Jay-Z -ified remix of her first single, “XXXO” hit the Net. The a glossy, electro-stomping reworking of M.I.A.’s original track features a brand-new verse from Jay himself, in which he proclaims, “This is not my politically correct flow.” He then proceeds to spit some great lines about metrosexuals and machine guns. There’s no word on who did the actual production work for the track, and by press time, M.I.A.’s label, Interscope, had not responded to MTV News’ request for comment. The “XXXO” remix isn’t the first time Jay and M.I.A. have collaborated together. The duo — along with Kanye West, Lil Wayne and T.I. — famously tore up the stage at the 2009 Grammy Awards with their version of “Swagga Like Us,” a performance that was made even more remarkable by the fact that M.I.A. was nine-months pregnant with her first son, Ikhyd . According to reports, M.I.A. will film a video for “XXXO” — the official first single off her album ///Y/ — with iconic hip-hop director Hype Williams. The album is due to hit stores on July 13. In the past two months, M.I.A. has stepped up her rather unorthodox promotion strategy for the album, releasing a controversial video for the song “Born Free” , feuding with Lady Gaga and taking Times reporter Lynn Hirschberg to task for a less-than-flattering cover story. Christina Aguilera Brings New Songs, Classic Hits To ‘Today’ Show

‘I was completely inspired by a lot of electronica music when my son was born,’ she says of Bionic. By James Dinh Christina Aguilera performs on the “Today” show on June 8 Photo: James Dinh / MTV News Fresh off her Bionic medley at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards , Christina Aguilera continued her promotional blitz for the new album Tuesday morning (June 8) by performing a mini-concert on the “Today” show. The pop star treated fans to a five-song set, including cuts from her new album and some older Xtina classics. With a slight breeze and summer sun in full effect, the always fashionable diva strutted a catwalk set up in Rockefeller Center during show rehearsals. Even though the crowd wasn’t as outrageous as those who trekked across states for Justin Bieber , Aguilera did have her share of devotees waiting in Rockefeller Plaza as early as midnight. The songstress made sure to recognize their devotion by happily signing autographs and taking pictures with fans in between her rehearsals. “I was completely inspired by a lot of electronica music when my son was born and we both were listening to it a lot together,” she told “Today” host Matt Lauer about her new album. “You know, having a child makes you think of the future and the next generation, and I got really inspired by electronica, which is so no-holds-barred with its sound and technology, and I wanted to really experiment with that. He definitely inspired a very playful side of me that I didn’t have prior to having him. He really inspired this album … and got me really in touch with my original pop roots of a decade ago, so it’s been really fun.” To start her mini-concert, the singer got the audience rowdy with the aggressive opening number “Fighter.” A flicker of camera flashes lit up the center of the catwalk, as Xtina led her dancers into a sea of fans. She continued with the M.I.A.-esque “Bionic,” while the singer’s eight backup dancers performed a slick and quirky routine. The momentum only continued with current single “Not Myself Tonight,” during which Aguilera joined in on a few dance moves. The songstress never fails to deliver ballads, so it was no surprise that her next number was her 2002 hit single “Beautiful.” But while she usually takes advantage of her high notes, she also showcased her vocal versatility on the final song: the Sia-penned ballad “You Lost Me.” The singer brought a subtle and gentle ambience to her set as she delicately delivered the tender ballad. Unfortunately for television viewers, the entire performance was not aired. In addition to the release of her album, the singer spoke about the completion of her first movie, “Burlesque,” which hits theaters in November. “It was an incredible experience,” she said. “I grew and learned so much. I had such great people to absorb from: Cher, Stanley Tucci, Kristen Bell was hilarious and funny and just made me feel so comfortable and supportive. It’s going to be a really, really fun movie come this November.” What do you think of Christina’s songs from her new album? Tell us in the comments below! Eminem’s Recovery Leaks Two Weeks Early

Rapper’s latest is officially due out on June 22. By Gil Kaufman Eminem’s Recovery Photo: Interscope It doesn’t matter if you’re a new kid on the block like Drake or a veteran like Eminem , chances are your new album is bound to leak early at some point. Marshall Mathers is the latest to fall to the leak plague, as his upcoming Recovery hit the Internet on Monday, two weeks before its June 22 official release date, and spread like wildfire. Fan forums immediately blew up with quick-take reviews on the rapper’s second album in as many years, raving about the many different sounds Slim Shady tries on over the course of the disc. The opening track, “Cold Wind Blows,” finds Em taking aim at some of his favorite targets, viciously daring haters to take him on while dropping references to Elton John, Michael Vick, Aquaman, Michael J. Fox and Mariah Carey before dipping into a sing-songy chorus, “I’m as cold as the cold wind … blows, bla bla bla blows.” He gets contemplative on the expansive acoustic ballad “Space Bound” and praises his second chances on the gospel stomper “Cinderella Man.” He also weaves his way around a gorgeous Rihanna chorus on the troubled-love ballad “Love the Way You Lie.” The leak comes less than a week after the online debut of the second song from the album, an unexpected collaboration with Pink called “Won’t Back Down.” The DJ Khalil-produced track finds Em dropping his usual verbal bombs, taking on all comers in his inimitable style. “Listen, garden tool/ Don’t make me introduce you to my power tool,” Em raps over Khalil’s droning organ chords. “You know the f—ing drill/ How you douche bags feel?/ Knowing you’re disposable, Summer’s Eve, Massengill.” Eminem spoke about his Recovery collaborations while in France on a promotional tour. Pink, Rihanna and Lil Wayne are all featured, a departure from Em’s previous projects, where the guest lists were usually limited to Shady or Aftermath artists. For “Won’t Back Down,” he explained, Pink was added to the track after it was completed. “When I did the song that I did with Pink, I laid my parts first and kind of heard her on the record and felt that she would smash this record,” Em said. Pink does her part with a fiery warning in the chorus: “You can sound the alarm, you can call out your guards/ You can fence in your yard, you can pull all the cards/ But I won’t back down, I won’t back down,” she sings. The video for “Not Afraid,” the album’s first single that’s been storming the charts, premiered on Sunday. In the dark clip directed by Richard Lee, the rapper stands on the ledge of a roof, slowly edging closer to the edge as he raps about coming out of a perilous time in his life. He’s able to pull back from the abyss and takes a walk through the streets of Newark ending up in a hall of mirrors where’s he’s forced to confront his reflection. Game Releases New Song With T.I., Robin Thicke On Twitter

MC posts a link to a mixed and mastered version of his latest single, ‘Pushin’ It.’ By Jayson Rodriguez The Game Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic The Game debuted a new track featuring T.I. and Robin Thicke from his forthcoming The R.E.D. Album via Twitter on Friday (June 4). The track, “Pushin’ It,” actually leaked to the Web on Thursday, but the Compton rapper released a mixed and mastered version of the song. The sexy number finds the rappers trading verses trumpeting their credentials with the ladies while Robin Thicke croons the chorus. “I’m a rude boy, so I’m gonna get it up/ Rihanna post-Chris, Matt Kemp, baby, this is us,” Game raps. “So talk to me, have you ever been to Cannes?/ Yeah, south of France/ Next stop Japan, let’s go.” “Pushing it, your lips/ ‘Cause my drug, it’s your lips” Thicke sings. The song follows his street single “Shake” and Game’s lead offering from The R.E.D. Album, “It Must Be Me.” The video for “Shake” premiered in an exclusive MTV News post and the clip for the Neptunes-produced “It Must Be Me” is slated to premier Friday on BET’s “106 & Park.” The former G-Unit cohort recruited a bevy of high-profile producers to man the boards for the project, and reunited with mentor Dr. Dre. “I feel great about this album,” Game told MTV News earlier this year. “It’s back full-force Aftermath and I’m conjoined with Star Trak.” (Pharrell Williams is one of the LP’s executive producers.) “I got this colorful movement over here where it’s beautiful music on this side [with Star Trak] — then when I need to go dark or super grown and sexy, I got Dre over here. The combination is crazy — mixed in with a Cool & Dre track and RZA track and all the sh– I been doing. The only person I’m upset I didn’t work with on this album is DJ Premier. I feel his sh– would have been perfect for this all-star producer cast that I have. One Premier track would have did me just fine. I would have murdered that sh–. Drake, The Game Say Album Leaks Can Be A Good Thing

Chamillionaire, Paul Wall also agree that artists can’t blame poor sales on early bootlegs. By Shaheem Reid Chamillionaire and Paul Wall Photo: MTV News Drake has been anointed by many fans and journalists alike as hip-hop’s new golden master of ceremonies, but he is not exempt from the same problem plaguing most musicians these days. Bootleggers leaked his much-anticipated Thank Me Later LP earlier this week, but the Toronto MC took it stride, tweeting, “I gave away free music for years so we’re good over here.” Drake told TheLifeFiles.com that the word of mouth won’t hurt him. “It’s a honor to make this dream come true for Wayne, and I’m excited to start my journey,” he said of the new album, which he previewed for the press on Wednesday. “I always say, if I would have put out an album that was poor quality, I think the leaks would have hurt me. Because a lot of the feedback has been great, it can only help.” The Game spoke about the inevitability of leaking when he stopped by the MTV Newsroom on Wednesday. “Every album is getting leaked from now until the duration of hip-hop,” he said. “It’s just once it hits the plant, or once a radio station gets their promo, somebody is gonna leak the album. You can look forward to it being leaked a week early or whatever. It’s gonna get leaked.” Chamillionaire and Paul Wall weighed in as well. And though they agreed that an MC’s ire is definitely raised when his album leaks early, for the most part, it doesn’t hurt too much. “You can’t not be bothered by that,” Cham told MTV News. “Because you wonder, is that a sale that I could have made? You hate to see all your hard work that you went to the studio doing. We done seen bootleggers riding 28s. We like, ‘Man, they eating good off of us.’ But we understand; you just gotta give them that music. If it’s dope, they gonna come buy it. I don’t think Drake or anybody else should worry if it’s dope. If people want it, it’s gonna create enough hype. 50 Cent, even Lil Wayne, everybody suffered from leaks and some people benefited from it.” Wall agreed that leaks can do as much good as they do harm. “If the album don’t sell good — that’s just not Drake, this is every artist — then [they say], ‘Oh, it got bootlegged.’ If it does great, then they’ll be like, ‘Oh, it does great ’cause the bootleg got out, and it let everybody know this was legit.’ It goes both ways.” Game suggested that any artists who complain that leaks hurt their sales should stop making excuses and make better music. “Lil Wayne showed me that,” Game said. “His album leaked four weeks before Tha Carter III was supposed to come out, and he sold a million the first week. That’s just an excuse. … It’s no longer acceptable because people are still selling.” Do you think leaks can help as much as they hurt? Talk about it in the comments.
