‘I’m not here to change the music world,’ the ‘American Idol’ champ tells MTV News. By James Montgomery Lee DeWyze Photo: MTV News It’s been exactly one week, but Lee DeWyze still can’t believe he won “American Idol.” The words seem strange even coming out of his mouth. “Yeah, it’s weird to say it, man,” he told MTV News on Wednesday (June 2). “I’m lovin’ it, to be sure, but man, it feels weird to say ‘ “American Idol” champion.’ ” To further illustrate that point, DeWyze said he can’t really remember how he felt — or what he did — when “Idol” host Ryan Seacrest announced that he’d been crowned the champ of season nine. It’s all just one rather glorious, delirious blur. “I was lost, dude. I didn’t know where I was! It was so crazy and intense, because everything we’ve done had led up to that point. And it was like, ‘And the winner is … ‘ And then there’s like the six-month pause, and then he says my name, and I was like, ‘Wow,’ ” he laughed. “It was just a big weight off my shoulders, and it felt amazing. I had it in my head what I would say or do if I won or if I lost, and all of that went out the window. … I’ve watched it back, and I try to remember what it was like. There’s some parts I don’t really remember. I remember being up there, and then the next thing you know, I was in the room with the press. It was just really fast and nonstop.” And things haven’t really let up since then. There has been the constant promotional cycle that comes with winning “Idol” — the performances and the appearances on TV shows — and then the upcoming American Idols Live! Tour. DeWyze doesn’t mind all the fuss that comes with winning the show (“Why would I complain about any of it?” he laughed), but more than anything, he’s really looking forward to getting into a recording studio to begin work on his album — which he’ll do whenever he has a free moment in between tour stops. “The studio and the stage are obviously two completely different things, so it’s going to be interesting to see how going from the live performances to the recording and back is going to pan out, but I’m really looking forward to it, because I’m going to have a lot of say in it,” he said. “I think that’s another misconception about ‘American Idol,’ is that once you go on there, you’re forced to do this or forced to wear that … we’re not. We get a lot of freedom and a lot of say. So I’m just looking forward to making a record I can be proud of.” What will that record sound like? Well, it’s still early, but DeWyze said fans can expect to hear some different sides of him — the kind of stuff he didn’t really get to show off on “Idol.” Though he knows winning the show only raises expectations, he’s ready and willing to take on the task at hand and whatever tasks come after that. “I’m sure there’s going to be elements of pop somewhere in there, there always is, and elements of rock and a folky feel. I’m not trying to go out there and do something that’s never been done. It’s all been done … and I think now, it’s more or less an opportunity for people to show who they are through their music,” he said. “I’m not here to change the music world, but I’m definitely here to show what I can do and express myself through my music. So to do that’s going to be cool, and to prove myself. Because I don’t feel that, just because I won ‘American Idol,’ that, you know, now I’ve made it. There’s a lot to prove still. There’s an album to put out, and I’m looking forward to it. It’s all about the process for me, you know? Just making the album, touring, doing all that stuff and seeing where I’m at in a year from now.” Where do you think Lee will be a year from now? Let us know in the comments! ‘Enough is enough,’ one blogger tells MTV News about the proliferation of leaked hip-hop albums. By Shaheem Reid Drake Photo: Rahman Dukes/MTV News Drake might be a budding superstar, but he’s gotta eat. That seems to be the consensus on the major hip-hop blogs, many of which have decided not to post more songs — many of them unfinished — from the Toronto MC’s forthcoming Thank Me Later LP, which leaked early Wednesday (June 2). Many times in the past — with Jay-Z’s Blueprint 3, Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter III and Kanye West’s 808s and Heartbreak — we’ve seen blogs post a myriad of songs immediately after the album leaks. While they might not post the entire album, you’d get at least three new joints from it. With Drake, however, most blogs have decided to ignore Thank Me Later ‘s early, unplanned release. “Enough is enough,” Andrew Barber of FakeShoreDrive.com told MTV News on Wednesday. “I know, for my credibility, we kinda already take enough from the artists. I know it’s a give-and-take relationship, but we already take enough from the artists. At a certain point, you have to take a stand. Most ethical blogs won’t post the album or keep posting [individual songs]. At a certain point, you’re cutting into their sales. Its one thing to post a few songs, but to post every single song, that’s basically pirating. That’s where I draw the line.” “To be fair,” RapRadar.com founder Elliot Wilson said, “I think a lot of the sites, when the album fully leaks, they don’t put up the full album leaks. They kinda slowed down on the leaks and they’ll make the bold statement, they’ll decide, ‘This is the last leak we’re gonna put up from the project.’ ” Sure enough, on Wednesday morning, NahRight.com posted a CD-quality version of the Drake/Jay-Z lyrical throwdown “Light Up.” At the end of the post a message read: “Last Thank Me Later leak we’re posting here. June 15th.” “You’ve gotta credit Drake, especially with NahRight and other sites,” Wilson added. “He was well-connected to those guys. You do form relationships, and again, as a rap fan, you sort of think a lot of these bloggers are fans at the end of the day. They don’t want to hurt his sales. You start looking in the mirror — we got excited by [Jay Electronica’s] ‘Exhibit C.’ When it went to iTunes, we was rallying people to go buy it legally just to support the movement of this new energy in hip-hop. I think those people are taking stock and they want Drake to do well also. He comes from them. He has a line in the new album about the backpack guy who’s getting to this level. He did his due diligence. He went through the blogs. So much of So Far Gone ‘s initial ascent was from the blogs. In terms of good will, they don’t wanna come back now and do anything they feel could possibly hurt him.” NahRight is part of a conglomerate of blogs known as the New Music Cartel: YouHeardThatNew.com , 2DopeBoyz.com , DaJaz1.com , OnSmash.com , and XclusiveZones.net are also affiliated. The NMC has become known as the leading source of new hip-hop music to hit the Internet, even getting tracks before some top DJs. “I think many of the top blogs posted the memorable or anticipated tracks from the album for their readers but refused to post more,” XclusiveZone’s Mr. X said. “It’s not only because of Drake — I can speak for myself and possibly the NMC, we don’t post full albums. We give the readers a sample of what they want to hear but tell them to support [artists], and always plug in the release date. But with Drake, because the anticipation was so high, everyone expected us to post the full album. We want to see him go gold or platinum the first week. We aren’t trying to take from someone’s plate — we’re all trying to eat together. We never condone unauthorized leaks but if something does leak, it’s best to take it and move on. Look at Drake’s response to his album leaking : ‘I gave away free music for years so we’re good over here.’ That made me respect him even more. It’s better than crying about it. The track is already out. Enjoy the free promotion, I guess.” So the question is, will Drake’s leak hurt his album sales? Perhaps not — there hasn’t been a single hip-hop LP in recent memory that didn’t doesn’t get leaked. In Drake’s case, he may be one of the lucky ones: Some artists’ albums get leaked as far as a month out (in the case of Lil Wayne’s Rebirth , four months ). Thank Me Later hit the black market less than two weeks from its June 15 release date. “I don’t think it’s gonna hurt him,” Wilson said. “I think it’s close enough to the release date. There’s a lot of people that want to support him. This is a moment that we’ve been waiting for. I’ve been trying to figure out what this feels like and what makes this different. Even though this is a debut album, it’s not like 50 Cent’s Get Rich or Die Tryin’ or Kanye’s College Dropout, in the sense of ‘this person really heated up the game.’ We all kind of like wanted to be a part of this guy celebrating and reaching that level. I feel like with this Drake situation, it’s kinda similar to Wayne where he’s already killed it on a lot of levels. He’s on so many hits, this is kind of like his ascension. If this record does get embraced the way people think it will be, it will [definitely make him] the next star — which reminds me of the way Tha Carter III went down, where Wayne set the table of him being the next dude but you needed the album to really prove it. Even though Drake is unproven as far as putting out a debut album, he’s been part of so much success already.” What do you think about Drake’s album leaking? Has this gone on long enough? Drake’s Thank Me Later Leak: Why Bloggers Aren’t Posting New Songs
Tip tells Mixtape Daily that the controversial name is ‘in no way a direct shot to a DJ.’ By Shaheem Reid T.I. Photo: Atlantic The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive T.I. said he isn’t dissing mixtape DJs or making a disparaging statement about the mixtape circuit by naming his new street project F— a Mixtape. Rather, the King of the South said, he’s actually going up against people who tried to discourage him from making a mixtape at this point in his multiplatinum, Grammy-winning career. “F— a mixtape” was a common response T.I. got when he started telling people that he was, in fact, going to drop a mixtape before he put out his King Uncaged LP, due in August. Some felt Tip should just focus on the album, while others thought he should do a film. Nah. Tip wanted to give back to the streets. “There’s so many songs I have recorded [for King Uncaged ],” he told Mixtape Daily earlier this week in NYC. “I already have 60, 70 songs. A lot of these songs are period pieces that speak volumes to what’s going on right now. If I hold onto them next year or the year after, they’ll be dated, because my life will be in another direction. If I’m not gonna put it on the album — and they all can’t make the album — then they might as well have another platform to present it to the world. Me, myself, personally, I feel that although I haven’t done mixtapes, it’s not ’cause I can’t. It’s ’cause I have so many other pressing issues that are on my plate, I have chose to work on that. ” F— a Mixtape, that’s in no way a direct shot to a DJ. ‘Cause for other people, [a mixtape] works wonders. It do what it’s supposed to do,” he added. “For me, I do what I need to do. That’s a common knowledge around the industry. I got enough music to go around. I can drop a song a day three or five years straight and still be cool. But F— a Mixtape, it got the response it was supposed to get. It got people thinking, it got people talking, and it generated a demand.” F— a Mixtape is co-hosted by DJ Drama and DJ MLK and features guest appearances from Lil Wayne, Mike Bigga, Young Jeezy, MacBoney and Tip’s cousin Rich Kid Rashad. Jamie Foxx appears on the tape’s intro, and Lil Duval and Kevin Hart do skits and interludes. Meanwhile, Swizz Beatz, Lil C, Smash Factory and DJ Toomp are among the producers. F— a Mixtape drops Thursday night (May 27) via LiveMixtapes.com . F— a Mixtape ‘s track list, according to DJ Drama: 1. “Intro” (Jamie Foxx) 2. “Welcome Back to the Trap” (produced by Smash Factory) 3. “Spazz Out” (produced by Swizz Beatz) 4. “Whatcha Saying Tip” (produced by Chuck Diesel) 5. “Yeah” (featuring Lil Wayne and produced by Lil C) 6. “Yeah Ya Know” (produced by DJ Toomp and Lil C) 7. “Once Upon a Time” 8. “Here We Go Again” (produced by Timbaland) 9. “Get Yo Girl (featuring Rich Kid Rashad and produced by Jim Jonsin) 10. “Like So” (produced by Lil C) 11. “Gettin’ Paid” (produced by Track Slayers) 12. “F— a Mixtape N—a!!!” (Lil Duval) 13. “Really Livin’ Like That” (produced by DJ Toomp) 14. “Whether You Like It or Not” (produced by Amadeus) 15. “Shooting Range” (Jamie Foxx) 16. “No Competition” (featuring Young Jeezy and produced by Black Mob) 17. “Bi— Who” (featuring MacBoney and produced by Lil C) 18. “Ready Set Go” (featuring Mike Bigga and produced by No I.D.) 19. “F— a Mixtape” (Kevin Hart) 20. “Outro” 21. “Celebration” (produced by J-Rock) Bonus track: “Got Your Back” (featuring Keri Hilson and produced by DJ Toomp) For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines or follow the Mixtape Daily team on Twitter: @shaheemreid and @mongosladenyc . ‘He studies his music, and he sees what people react to,’ singer says of Guetta, who worked on her upcoming LP. These days, it seems as if everyone is getting in on the dance-music craze, which has been fueled by chart-topping releases by everyone from Lady Gaga and Ke$ha to the Black Eyed Peas and Akon . And the genre’s resurgence has a lot to do with the rise of the celebrity DJ, as seen with music-industry darling David Guetta . Kelly Rowland , who worked with Guetta on much of her forthcoming, yet-untitled solo album, said she has all the aforementioned artists to thank for the sound on her project. “We have wonderful artists to thank, like Gaga, who have opened up the doors and just really made it start to be a thing,” the former Destiny’s Child member told MTV News when she stopped by the offices on Wednesday (May 26). But the credit doesn’t just go to Gaga: “With David and the Black Eyed Peas, Will.I.Am, we have them to thank,” Rowland added. Rowland might be a bit biased when it comes to Guetta. The two have found chart success already with their 2009 song “When Love Takes Over,” so it felt natural for them to reunite on this project, including the album’s first single, “Commander.” She loved having him bring his musical vision to her project. “He studies the crowd and, I think, he studies his music, and he sees what people react to,” she said. “And that’s what separates him, for me, [from] any other producer.” Are you excited to hear what else Rowland and Guetta have in store for her album? ‘It brought us out of what we normally do — the real hard hip-hop videos,’ Hi-Tek says of clip with partner Talib Kweli. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway Sway, DJ Hi-Tek and Talib Kweli Photo: MTV News When Talib Kweli and Hi-Tek first debuted as Reflection Eternal 10 years ago , the duo’s most well-known visual stemmed from their breakout hit “The Blast.” The video for that song found Kweli and Tek sitting on a park bench outside a housing project as they rapped in a rainstorm — the epitome of the underground hip-hop aesthetic at the time. These days, the duo’s creative process is far different. After individually pursuing musical projects in the ensuing decade, Reflection Eternal were ready to step out of their comfort zone when they came together again for their new album Revolutions Per Minute. The pair took a novel direction on the Alex Moors-directed clip for “Midnight Hour,” a Doo-Wop inspired number. “I think it’s more conceptual. It brought us out of what we normally do — you know, the real hard hip-hop [videos],” Hi-Tek told MTV News of the video, which features Estelle. “It gave us a chance to get our acting skills on, to have fun with a video as opposed to being so serious about it. … [Instead], we just had fun with the music.” “It’s just a look, we were going for a certain vibe,” Kweli added. “Graphically artistic.” The opening shot shows a record spinning before the camera pans up to reveal Estelle crooning the chorus into a 1950s-style microphone. Kweli and Hi-Tek are dressed sharply in conservative looks: a slim-fitting suit, tie, and glasses for rapper Kweli, and a cardigan, bow tie, and newsboy cap for the producer. The video is mostly performance-based and centers on the three collaborators singing and dancing. According to Hi-Tek, the song was originally slated for Estelle’s debut album. But when it didn’t make it to the Brit singer’s Shine, the track went unused for two years until finally landing on the hip-hop duo’s Revolutions. Reuniting with Kweli for their sophomore set gave the song a new release opportunity. “I was working on joints for her album, and I was working on my third [solo] album and we cut two records,” Tek explained. “One for my album and [one for Estelle’s], which we wanted to submit for the project, but it was too late for her album. It was sitting for two years, and I played it for Kwe and he loved it. I didn’t really think it was a record for our album, but we made it work. And it’s a classic piece of music, so it should be heard rather than sitting in my crates.” What do you think about Reflection Eternal’s “Midnight Hour” video? Let us know in the comments! Cam’ron, Fat Joe, Rick Ross, Big Boi, Raekwon and more hip-hop heavyweights come out to support Inf. By Shaheem Reid DJ Khaled Photo: Ben Rose/ Getty Images ATLANTA — A couple of weeks ago, DJ Khaled found himself in the center of MCs: Cam’ron, Vado, Fat Joe and Rick Ross. All the spitters had smiles on their faces because Khaled was making one of his movies again, this time by rapping. Khaled and company were at Atlanta radio station V103 on DJ Infamous’ radio show. “Sittin’ on the top floor/ What you think I’m hot for?/ Every summer drop more/ Hits to make my stock go up!” Khaled rapped as Infamous spun the “All I Do Is Win” remix. Khaled couldn’t contain his excitement afterward, yelling, “We made it, ma.” “We all out here for Infamous,” Khaled said when the radio show was over. “He’s official We the Best. He’s been We the Best.” Khaled recently inked his friend Infamous to a record deal via his We the Best label. Khaled, Cam’ron, Vado, Ross, Fat Joe, Chaka Zulu, Donnis, Pill, Big Boi, Raekwon and members of the Atlanta Hawks and Orlando Magic all came down to ATL’s club Compound to support the fifth anniversary of Infamous’ radio show. “We here to support my man Infamous,” Cam said before the party. “He shows us much love, so we here to support him. We’re going to Compound and do a whole ‘nother movie tonight, but Infamous, we appreciate all the love from my brother down here. He’s Atlanta. Say no more.” “Its very monumental, and its very big,” Infamous said about his new deal. “I represent We the Best, as Khaled said. We making that We the Best move.
