Nas Says Raekwon Collabo Is ‘Likely’ After Missing Out On Last Album

‘I definitely wish I was on that piece,’ Nas tells Mixtape Daily of Only Built 4 Cuban Linx … Pt. 2. By Shaheem Reid Nas Photo: MTV News The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive Message to Green Lantern: Homie, make it happen! One of the great DJs in the game is on the road with Nas and Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley on the Distant Relatives Tour, and we’re all hoping Green can convince Nas to do another mixtape . “Perhaps,” Nas said with a grin. “Green is that dude. I’m always knocking Green Lantern mixtapes.” Nas and Damian Marley’s Distant Relatives joint LP came out Tuesday (May 18). Nas also appears on Capone-N-Noreaga’s independent July 13 album, The War Report 2. Although Nas didn’t specifically record rhymes for the album, he appears on a track called “With Me.” Nore told us the Nas vocals were taken from an old studio session he had in the vault. “It’s all good,” Nas said about appearing on the album. “That’s a team outta Queens. It’s all good.” What about C-N-N’s business partner Raekwon? Nas was conspicuously absent on the Chef’s Only Built 4 Cuban Linx … Pt. II, and he regrets it. Maybe he’ll get on the Wu-Tang Clan co-founder’s upcoming Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang album. “It’s been no discussions,” Nas said about appearing on Rae’s new project. “You know how the music game is. Everybody is out there grindin’, making music. But his last album was classic. I definitely wish I was on that piece. So yeah, something in the future is definitely likely. That’ll be good.” Finally, what’s good with a new Nas solo LP? “I talked to a lot of people I really like about my next project. But there’s no one sitting there doing my album right now that I could speak of,” he said. “This record here [ Distant Relatives ], I think it’s gonna push me and D in our solo projects. I think any record we do, it’s gotta live up to this record. It’s gotta be as good or better. We set the standard with this album. I’m just excited about this record right now.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines or follow the Mixtape Daily team on Twitter: @shaheemreid and @mongosladenyc .

Nas Says Working With Damian Marley Helped Him Through Personal Drama

‘I kept my head clear and focused on what we was doing,’ he says of recording Distant Relatives. By Shaheem Reid Nas Photo: Def Jam Nas shared a brotherly bond with Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley while recording their Distant Relatives LP , which was part of the reason he has been able to get through his much-publicized personal turmoil over the past year. In April of last year, Kelis filed for divorce from Nas . Since then, the two have been embroiled in a court battle over child support. Still, despite whatever drama the MC found himself, it didn’t blur his focus on his new project. “Personal life is what it is,” he said Monday (May 17). “Everybody goes through it. Working on this record got me through it. Rockin’ with D got me through it. His whole squad, his whole team, the way he rides, his whole culture. He didn’t have to push anything on me. He didn’t have to say anything particular. Just, I know this is my brother right here. Rockin’ with him, I kept my head clear and focused on what we was doing, so it was all good.” Their joint effort hits stores Tuesday. The two started a tour in support of the project, touching the stage in Chicago over the weekend, and they hit New York on Monday night. “People don’t know what to expect still,” Nas said of their live shows. “It’s a good thing the album is out. You can enjoy it, come through, anticipate certain songs. We’re doing an album for the first time, so we’re still getting the kinks out, but each show we do, it’s just growing.” Nas promised that the duo will get “heavily” into the album at their concerts. The guest stars on Distant Relatives include K’Naan, Josh Stone, Lil Wayne and Jr. Gong’s brother Stephen Marley. “He’s on two tracks, his vocals, which is on ‘Leaders’ and ‘In His Own Words,’ ” Damian said. “He also produced those two tracks and a track called ‘Patience’ on the album. For me, it’s a natural thing. All of my albums prior to this was produced by my brother and myself. That’s how we do music. It’s another natural step for us to do music on this album also.” “It’s mind-blowing, man,” Nas added about being in the lab with the Marley family. “Anytime you see family, you’re always taken aback and see the similarities between people. When you see Stephen, you see Julian — all the brothers. It’s an amazing thing. Sometimes I think, ‘What if their father was here to see all of them, how well they’re doing now?’ He’s gotta be proud — even now. It’s a beautiful thing. [My brother] Jungle definitely came through. We made it a big family affair; the Marleys and Joneses: We chillin’.” The current single from Distant Relatives is “As We Enter.” “Great fun shooting that music video,” Jr. Gong said. “It’s almost like, in some way, a version of the live show. We get up there, performing for the camera. It reminded me of the ‘Road to Zion’ video. The look of it.” Would you like to be a fly on the wall in the recording studio with Nas and the Marleys? Stone Sour’s Audio Secrecy Is ‘Loaded With Melody,’ Corey Taylor Says

‘It’s probably the best thing I’ve done in a long time,’ says the singer, who also fronts Slipknot. By James Montgomery Corey Taylor Photo: MTV News Corey Taylor isn’t mincing words when it comes to the new Stone Sour album — and yes, he realizes this might offend fans of his other band, Slipknot. “It’s so good, man. Every song has a catchy hook — even the heavy stuff — every song is loaded with melody. It’s still got the attitude, but it’s there. It’s probably the best thing I’ve done in a long time,” he told MTV News. “I mean [Slipknot’s 2008 effort] All Hope Is Gone was a great album, and I worked really hard on it, but on this album … coming in with the amount of material — we recorded 18 songs — and knowing that every tune not only has its own identity but is damn good, I’m very, very proud of that.” Yes, Taylor is willing to talk at great length about Audio Secrecy, the follow-up to Stone Sour’s breakthrough 2006 album, Come What(ever) May. Recorded at Nashville’s iconic Blackbird Studios — the first time he’s made an album outside of Los Angeles or his native Iowa — it’s a record positively brimming with ideas, one that, as he put it, represents “everything that we’ve been threatening to do,” even if that means exploring far quieter, more refined sonic territories. “I finished my last song two days ago, and it’s all killer; there’s no filler. It’s so good. I mean, there’s so many vibes and so many styles, but it’s all cohesive. The continuity is there,” he said. “It doesn’t sound like a comp album, it doesn’t sound like 12 bands coming in going, ‘We’re going to record a song!’ It sounds like a band exploring, which, to me, is [a] really old-school tradition. “You never used to go in and just kind of chop out a bunch of songs and throw it out there. The old guard would go in, and they would just record what they had. They would record the songs that they wrote, because they wrote them. It didn’t have to sound a certain way, didn’t have to be a certain way, it didn’t all have to sound the same,” he continued. “It had life, and that’s what we did with this. … We just said, ‘You know what? We wrote this. So what if this is heavier than that? So what if this is in a major key and these are in minor keys? … We feel this, so let’s go for it.’ ” The funny thing is, though he’ll seemingly never run out of good things to say about the album, there’s plenty he’s mum about. Perhaps in keeping with its title, there’s still no firm release date for Secrecy, and Taylor wouldn’t reveal if all 18 songs would make the final track list (“There’s a plan hatching … that’s all I’m gonna say”). And when asked about his favorite song on the album, he would only say, “They’re all killer,” before singling out a piano-laden track called “Miracles” as a standout. “I play piano on a bunch of songs. One of them is called ‘Miracles,’ which is really dark but kind of crescendos into this huge chorus at the end,” he said. “There’s so much more, though. We have an overabundance of writers in this band. We all write, so it’s not a case of one guy writing all the songs or no one writing the songs. It’s a complete thing.” While Taylor is playing things close to the vest with Stone Sour, things aren’t quite the same with Slipknot. After wrapping a world tour in support of All Hope Is Gone in late 2009, the band went on a rather informal break — and, from the sound of things, not much has changed since then. For the immediate future, Taylor is 100 percent focused on Stone Sour. “There’s nothing really happening [with Slipknot],” he said. “There’s a DVD coming out, apparently, that I will be informed of so I can promote it. Nobody talks to me about these things. I get a complimentary copy. I mean, I still don’t have a copy of [the band’s 2002 DVD] ‘Disasterpieces.’ What the f—?” Are you looking forward to new music from Stone Sour? Let us know in the comments. PEOPLE.com Previews Madonna’s Hard Candy

“Workin’ up a sweat/ that’s what music’s for,” Madonna sings on “Heartbeat,” the pumped-up fourth song on Hard Candy, her latest album, due April 29. Indeed, the pop diva makes good on her promise – singing her way through an hour of Euro-flavored dance tracks infused with retro, house beats. PEOPLE.com took an advanced listen – and can reveal five fast facts about Madonna’s latest. • On “Spanish Lesson,” produced by the Neptunes, Madonna does, in fact, go bilingual, offering liberal translations of phrases like, “Entiendo,” which she says means, “I get it,” over a funked-up flemenco guitar riff. (Literal translation: “I understand.”) • Kanye West offers a fast-paced rap on “Beat Goes On,” the eighth track, breathlessly rapping, “I think I’m going to try something new.” • The singer indulges her choral side on the album-closer “Voices,” which features production by Justin Timberlake, Timbaland and Nate “Danjahandz” Hills. The song builds to a dark, cinematic crescendo, as the album closes with one lone tone. • Madonna sings, “You always have the biggest heart/ though we’re 6,000 miles apart,” on “Miles Away,” a direct allusion to living and working far away from hubby Guy Richie. • Madonna really wants you to dance: Two songs – opening track “Candy Store” and “Beat Goes On” – feature overt calls to action. “Gotta get up off your seat,” she sings on the latter, bolstered by the Neptunes’s production and West’s rapping. Drake Reveals Alicia Keys Collaboration On Thank Me Later

‘Fireworks’ will be album’s opening track. By Jayson Rodriguez Drake Photo: Cash Money Records Drake confirmed Alicia Keys will appear as a guest on his forthcoming debut album during the Los Angeles stop of his Away From Home tour on Thursday night. The Toronto MC broke the news to the crowd as the opening notes of “Fireworks,” slated to be Thank Me Later’s opening track, began to boom from the speakers. “This right here is the first song that you will here when you put that disk in,” Drake said of Thank Me Later, due June 15. “It’s a song with myself and Miss Alicia Keys, it’s called “Fireworks.” “Money just changed everything, I wonder how life without it would go,” he rapped. “From the concrete, who knew that a flower would grow/ Looking down from the top and it’s crowded below/ My 15 minutes started an hour ago.” Drake premiered the track during the first stop of his tour and has been revealing more of the number with subsequent performances. In Rolling Stone magazine’s Spring Music Preview, the So Far Gone superstar revealed the track would address his relationships with Lil Wayne, his own family, and a rumored romance with Rihanna. Last month, Drake told MTV News the song represents what his life is like at the moment . “The song itself is the first song on the album; I think it’s the biggest indicator of what the album is gonna be like,” he said. “That’s why I picked that song to go first, and that’s why I wrote the first verse like that. It’s really where I am in my life right now. I know they’re looking forward to the album, so I want them to get a feel of how the story starts off.” Are you excited to hear Alicia Keys collaborating with Drake? Let us know in the comments! Britney Spears Confirms Professional Split From Boyfriend Jason Trawick

Spears rep says the pair want to ‘focus on their personal relationship.’ By Jocelyn Vena Britney Spears and Jason Trawick Photo: Lester Cohen/ WireImage Britney Spears and Jason Trawick have decided to go their separate ways, at least professionally. Trawick will no longer serve as Spears’ agent, but the two confirm that all is fine and dandy in their personal relationship. The pair “have decided to end their professional relationship and focus on their personal relationship,” a Spears rep told People.com . And while they continue to dodge rumors of their engagement, a source close to the couple added, “They are very happy. Things are really good with them.” Fans, however, might be happier to hear that Spears is hard at work on a follow-up to her 2008 release, Circus. “Since wrapping her recent world tour, Spears has been busy in the studio working on her next album,” her rep said. While there had been rumors that the album could be released sometime this summer, the fact that she is still working on it means that fans may have to wait a little longer. While details are scant about the new record, buzz about the album has been floating around the Web for quite some time now. Several names are attached as possible contributors to what will be the singer’s seventh studio album. David Guetta is involved, according to Idolator , as well as frequent Britney hitmaker Max Martin, Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins and Sean Garrett. Spears recently had fans salivating over her leaked demo of Lady Gaga’s “Telephone.” The song’s producer, Darkchild, spoke about the work he’s doing with the pop star on the album. “We talked about the direction of her album, [manager Larry Rudolph] gave me some insight into the direction, and he wants me to work on stuff for the album,” he said. The producer went on to assert that he’s very focused on the pop singer, and he’s determined to “write an international smash for her new album. “I think the fans deserve it, I think Britney deserves it and I can’t wait to get back into the studio with Britney. I’m about to go crazy on making something that’s so crazy. Since I’ve had that conversation with Larry Rudolph, I’ve studied some stuff from her last album and the Blackout album, and that was great stuff, but I think I’m going to bring something a little bit greater. I’m gonna give it my all to deliver something that’s crazy, crazy amazing for Britney.” Related Photos The Evolution Of: Britney Spears Related Artists Britney Spears

Limp Bizkit’s Fred Durst: The Chocolate Starfish Gets Humble

The singer we met this week was worlds away from his former self, in Bigger Than the Sound. By James Montgomery Fred Durst Photo: Jeff Vespa/ WireImage Think back, if you can, to the nightmarish state of rock and roll in the late ’90s. Recall the thudding riffs, the macho posturing, the turntablists. Shudder at the memory of Woodstock ’99, the Family Values Tour, and moshpits filled with red-faced, shirtless frat guys all looking to abuse and/or murder you. Recoil from the terror. The dread. The Puddle of Mudd. It was a tough time, indeed. Now, think even harder … what’s the first image that comes to your with mind? Chances are, it’s a dude. He is probably wearing a blood-red Yankees cap, turned backwards on his skull. He is probably crouched, wildly gesturing, the crotch of his baggy sweats nearly scraping the floor. He is probably angry at seemingly nothing — and everything — all at once. He is almost definitely Fred Durst. Because, more than anyone (or anything), fairly or unfairly, Durst represented most of the above. He was misogynistic, mean-spirited and egotistical. He picked fights, burned bridges, and stomped on anyone who got in his way. He rhymed “Nookie” with “Cookie,” and did it loudly and proudly. Basically, he was “rap-rock” personified, an outwardly lunk-headed, ham-fisted dude who elbowed his way to the top of the mountain. And when the genre that he embodied dropped off, Durst was left in the lurch. And here’s the thing: Fred Durst knows all of this. Or, at least, I think he does. Because when I met him (and his Limp Bizkit mates) Recently, he was none of the things I mentioned above. Instead, he was soft-spoken. Slightly goofy. Strangely Zen. And most of all, incredibly humble. Time and reality seem to have tamed him. Of course, this is all based on the 45 minutes I spent talking to him, and everything he told me about Limp Bizkit’s new album, the rather excellently titled Gold Cobra (which, strangely, still does not have a release date), but I don’t think I’m that off-base. It’s the first album to feature the band’s full lineup in more than a decade, one that Durst calls their “full circle” affair. Making it meant mending the bridges he had so roughly busted up during his heyday, apologizing to his bandmates, and realizing — probably for the first time ever — that the world does not revolve solely around him. And sure, the first song we’ve heard off the album — “Why Try,” currently streaming on the band’s official site — is very much a Limp Bizkit-y affair (one in which Durst refers to himself as “the pirate pimp”), and yes, the presumed first single is called “Douchebag,” but those are merely superficial details. Durst admits that the former was born out of in-studio collaborations and the latter is actually a song about bullies. It would seem the shoe is on the other foot. But that’s not all. Durst spoke at length about the “unspoken language” that he and his bandmates share, a “magical” connection that he couldn’t have with anyone else. He mentioned the pure intent behind Cobra, a renewed focus the band had lost in their later years (“It’s controlled chaos now … there’s an intent behind it”). He heaped praise on guitarist Wes Borland’s work on “Douchebag,” and beamed about the “melodic stuff” on the album. But most of all, he repeatedly talked about the fun he’s having these days, about the energy the band is receiving from the crowds they’re playing for. Make no mistake about it, Durst is amazed — and a bit flattered — that his fans have stuck with him through all of this. He is taking nothing for granted. And, at the end of our interview, he made a point of showing me the (then-unreleased) artwork for Cobra on his iPhone. You’ve probably seen it by now. It’s a painting, done by Borland, of a giant cobra, rearing up in a cave, with a bikini-clad babe nestled in its coils. As Durst was dialing it up, he couldn’t help but laugh, mostly because he was so excited by the artwork (and, of course, the sheer WTF-ness of titling an album Gold Cobra ). It was an oddly telling moment, not to mention a really genuine one; the kind of thing I’d never expect from a guy with his reputation. But it only further illustrates my point: Fred Durst, the former Enfant terrible of rap rock, is actually a pretty humble guy these days. He laughed. He smiled. He even wore his ballcap forward the whole time. His image may not be what it was, and perhaps that’s beside the point. Fred Durst isn’t the monster you probably think he is, at least not anymore. He’s been through the ringer, he’s heard all the jokes, and he’s better for all of it. And while he still may do it all for the nookie, he no longer derives satisfaction in instructing you to stick it up your (yeah).

N.E.R.D. Say New Album Is ‘Very Psychedelic’

‘It’s a fun record and it’s geared toward the women,’ Shay Haley says. By Steven Roberts Photo: Sam Hendrick/ MTV News N.E.R.D. recorded several tracks for their new album — in fact, they recorded the entire album twice and still weren’t happy and, in the end, found themselves with nothing. “We had several [album] names throughout this process,” Shay Haley explained. “It’s just one day [Pharrell] called and said, ‘What do you think about the album title Nothing ?’ ” Shay said the group started with a blank slate and ultimately filled it in with songs inspired by two things: touring and women. The group has toured extensively since before the release of their third album Seeing Sounds in 2008. They’ve played several festivals, colleges and opened for both Kanye West and Jay-Z. And Pharrell said the touring influenced the type of music they made. “It’s funny — I think we were blessed in that sense,” Pharrell explained. “The music is very psychedelic for the most part — 80 percent of it is definitely flower-power, counterculture, release and let yourself be free and have a great time!” Pharrell also said they wanted to tap into a new understanding of the opposite sex and cater the album more towards women. The first single is “Hot N’ Fun” and features Nelly Furtado, who the gang recruited for her distinctive tone. “We think that the new definition of sexuality is the appreciation of life and the moment, and that’s why people should have sex. For the most part, when you and her are there and you’re having a special moment, it’s like, ‘Aww man, I could have been anywhere in the world, but I’m here with you! This is amazing to me! This is so cool — let’s do it,” Pharrell laughed. “I’m so kidding, by the way.” “It’s the ultimate spring, summertime record. It’s the festival record, it’s a fun record and it’s geared towards the women,” Shay offered. “What woman doesn’t want to put on their sundress and stroll through SoHo and have that as their theme music?” Nothing is due in stores June 15. ‘Kiss teamed up with DJs Drama and Green Lantern for this Mayweather-Mosley-themed mixtape — a Mixtape Daily special! By Shaheem Reid with additional reporting by Rahman Dukes Jadakiss Photo: MTV News No matter what happens in the big Floyd “Money” Mayweather vs. “Sugar” Shane Mosley bout on Saturday, it’ll have a hard time topping the excitement on the new Champ Is Here 3 mixtape by Jadakiss and DJs Drama and Green Lantern. ‘Kiss is already legendary, but the lines on this one are as immaculate as ever. “The game is all Jada’s/ Something hot drop, I get ’em in all flavors/ The Black Mamba of the vocals,” he spits. “He’s a di–, you a p—y, y’all neighbors/ The Black Mamba of the vocals/ MJ of the Pro-Tools, anti-social.” We don’t need to say much more than that! Our money is Money May and of course ‘Kiss. Shout to DJ Drama and Green Lantern who hosted this one on the tag team. It’s a “Gangsta Grillz Invasion.” This Week’s Main Pick Street Kings : Jadakiss, Green Lantern and DJ Drama Holding It Down For : Legendary hip-hop Mixtape Album : The Champ Is Here 3 Real Spit : As promised, the biggest event in hip-hop right now is here: Jadakiss’ Gangsta Grillz Invasion, The Champ Is Here 3. ‘Kiss’ collabo with Green Lantern and DJ Drama has been strategically planned to drop on the same day that Floyd Mayweather and Shane Mosley are getting it on in the ring: tomorrow, May 1. This time around, though, Jada isn’t pushing an album (at press time he was only three or four songs deep into his next LP, Top Five, Dead or Alive ). “The regular formula for the first two was drop the mixtape right when I finished the album,” Jada added. “I just shifted it on you this time: Give you the mixtape then go finish the album. Let you compare it with the albums that’s coming out while I’m in the kitchen.” Kiss’ mixtapes have been so dope, he’s often found himself competing with himself. “That’s another reason why it’s good to drop it before, so I won’t have that problem,” Jada laughed. “It’ll just be creating pandemonium everywhere instead of competing with my own album. It might be better to do it this way. We gonna keep switching it around. We might do another one this way, but we gonna switch the pattern up so they can’t follow.” Guests on the tape include Yo Gotti and Nicki Minaj — and that’s just to start it off. “We got some underground artists, some high-class artists, some of them good, down-bottom artists. It takes you all around. You definitely gonna rock out for Memorial Day, for the summer.” “There’s some surprises on this joint, even with just his features,” Lantern continued. “We never had features outside of the Lox. But we have some nice surprises.” Green and Jada have been rocking on this series since the start. They called Drama into the fold for the third. “I got the phone call one day. Green been in [Atlanta] recently, invading the airwaves, invading the city,” Drama told of his participation. “We been looking for a project to do for a couple years now. Green called and said, ‘We making the mixtape game exiting again. It’s fun. We’re moving around brands. What do you think about coming on board for this Champ Is Here 3 ? It made perfect sense. I been on my New York sh– heavy. Green is in the A, ‘Kiss being the legend he is — three very important and crucial brands in hip-hop. Stupid!” Joints To Check For : “Bang” “You know what I’m spitting already,” Jada laughed. “That’s self-explanatory. The content is just fight dialogue, workout dialogue, getting ready for the fight. What I’ll do to you before or after the fight.” “Here I Go” (featuring Yo Gotti) “Yo Gotti is poppin,” Jada said. “He’s been doing his thing for a while in the South. I feel he’s an underdog like me. He do his thing but he don’t get the props he should get. Those are the people I rock with the hardest. He don’t care, he knows what he’s doing despite what anybody might think. I respect him for that.” “It’s a problem man,” Dram concurs. “We wanted to give them something they wasn’t expecting and haven’t heard. The beat on ‘Here I Go,’ it felt right. Mystikal is home. We used his beat.” “Who Shot Ya?” “Rest in peace B.I.G. Big shout to Nasheem,” Kiss — who rapped over Biggie’s classic track, said. “You can’t really play with that. I took shots at y’all [the MTV Hip-Hop Brain Trust] on there … Not really, just getting y’all back. Big up to them [ “Hottest MCs in the Game” ] lists. I don’t let them lists discourage me because the people who make the list, the people who’s on the lists, [watch out for my] new album, Top Five, Dead or Alive. ” “Listen,” Green adds. “I heard it for the first time a couple of days ago. I had to stop for a minute. This is special. You just can’t go regular on that beat, so I just stopped. I had to take a minute and really concentrate on that one. He came off. He wrapped it up. Blood on the floor at the end of that one!” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines or follow the Mixtape Daily team on Twitter: @shaheemreid and @mongosladenyc .
