Bret Michaels’ Sister Says ‘Things Are Definitely Looking Up’

‘He’s not by any means out of the woods, but he is getting better every day,’ Michelle Sychak tells a radio show. By Gil Kaufman Bret Michaels Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images Recovery from the kind of brain injury suffered by Poison singer Bret Michaels requires patience and very careful monitoring. And according to his sister, the rocker is making slow but steady progress. “He’s doing good,” said sibling Michelle Sychak in an interview with the Omaha, Nebraska-based “Todd N Tyler Radio Empire” morning-radio show on Wednesday. Michelle said her brother’s speech was good, considering the seriousness of the brain hemorrhage he suffered last Thursday. “Things are definitely looking up. … He sounded good — as good as you can when your brain’s throbbing,” she said. “He seems very coherent to me and like he knew what he was saying. … [He] does sound like Bret. Truth be told, I think he’ll outlive us all.” She spoke to him recently and said, though he’s stable, her brother is still in the intensive care unit. Earlier reports indicated that Michaels was suffering from slow or slurred speech as a result of the buildup of blood at the base of his brain. He continues to be hospitalized at an unnamed clinic in the intensive care unit. “He’s doing good,” she said. “He’s not by any means out of the woods, but he is getting better every day.” She said the fact that Michaels lived through the initial rupture was “a miracle in itself. I’ve never known anyone that dodged so many bullets in their life, both figuratively and literally.” Despite speculation that a staging mishap that resulted in Michaels being hit by a curtain at the 2009 Tony Awards might have caused the injury, she said doctors may never know what caused the rupture. The news came a day after Michaels’ road manager, Janna Elias, posted a note on the rocker’s website indicating that, “Provided there are no further complications or setbacks,” Michaels, 47, could be back out on the road in time for a May 26 date in Fort Smith, Arkansas. “I think good news is around the corner,” she said. “Even though yesterday was a minor setback, doctors remain hopeful for a full recovery and plan to release more specific information next Monday,” Elias wrote, referring to a not uncommon side effect of the brain hemorrhage called hyponatremia , a lack of sodium in the body that can lead to seizures. Doctors told Michaels he “is very lucky, as his condition could have been fatal,” she wrote. “With further testing and rehabilitation, they are hopeful that Bret will gradually improve as the blood surrounding the brain dissolves and is reabsorbed into his system, which can be a very painful recovery and take several weeks to months,” she said. Eminem Is ‘Back’ On ‘Not Afraid,’ Fans Say

‘THAT is the eminem I like hearing,’ one fan tweets about the lead Recovery single. By Jayson Rodriguez Eminem Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Eminem’s “Not Afraid” has been the talk of blogs, message boards and social-media networks on Thursday (April 29), as the rapper detoured from his normal route of celebrity-bashing numbers and instead delivered an honest take on his life and career, even calling last year’s Relapse “ehh.” Fans have mostly been supportive, with many noting his departure from zanier fare. “Very different than his usual 1st singles, but I like it,” kevi-B wrote on MTV.com. The Detroit rapper’s last album, Relapse, was among 2009’s highest sellers, but fans complained that it didn’t show off the MC’s skills. The album was Eminem’s first in five years, after suffering from drug dependency and the loss of his close friend, D12 rapper Proof. In interviews, Em noted that the album helped him work his way through writer’s block, and he returned to his Slim Shady persona for aid. Rbrt_vndrvn wrote on MTV.com that the criticism seems to have motivated Eminem on “Not Afraid.” “Well, it’s official: Eminem has to work with a chip on his shoulder and something to prove to bring out his potential,” he said. “From now on, I declare Eminem the underdog, and we will always get great music!” Since Relapse, Eminem stayed visible by contributing to Drake’s “Forever,” Lil Wayne’s “Drop the World” and B.o.B’s “Airplanes (Part II)” in preparation for his upcoming Recovery, due in June. That output left fans excited, and Twitter member Tony Markovich gave Em two virtual thumbs up. “THAT is the Eminem I like hearing,” he tweeted. “Forever, Drop the World, Airplanes, Despicable, and now this!? I’d say he’s back.” Some Slim Shady fans weren’t happy with Eminem dismissing Relapse, which actually took home some awards-show hardware. “Great leadoff song,” Tom wrote on MTV.com “Really goes well with the album title. … I’m surprised he called Relapse ‘ehh.’ Relapse wasn’t as bad as people make it out to be. The only downside to it was it was a bit repetitive, but he spit fire on every track. Em’s ‘ehh’ album still wins a Grammy for Best Rap Album.” Are you excited to hear Eminem’s new music? MC also tells Shade 45 about Recovery LP, collaborators. By Shaheem Reid Eminem Photo: Nigel Parry Eminem has said that when he opened up his planned album Relapse 2 to a variety of producers, he was inspired to not just change the direction of the LP, but rethink the project completely: He buried the Relapse sequel and started working on Recovery , which will be out on June 22. “I kinda went back to the lab on that whole concept,” Em told radio personality Angela Yee on her Shade 45 show “The Morning After,” on Thursday (April 29). “As I started getting to work with different producers and sh–, the very sound changed and I kinda turned the corner.” Em rattled off an impressive array of trackmasters that he secured for Recovery, including Dr. Dre, DJ Khalil, Boi-1da — who produced the album’s first single, “Not Afraid,” which debuted Thursday — and Havoc from Mobb Deep. “He sent me a couple of tracks,” Em, a huge Mobb Deep fan, said of Havoc. “They were both cool, but one of them was that sh– and I had to do something to it. I’m just happy I got to work with him.” Jim Jonsin (T.I., Lil Wayne) also worked on the LP. “He was open to ideas,” Jonsin told Mixtape Daily . “He was real respectful to my craft. He let me do what I do. He asked me ideas on some of the lyrics. We had ideas for lyric changes. Certain words may or may not work on radio. We talked about that. He had a setup outside of the room to do production, but I’d rather be in the room where he was at, and he was cool with that. And I knocked out a couple of joints in there while he was in there with me. He was pretty open and he let me do my thing. He did his thing. It was a pretty good experience. “We touched on something that I haven’t done anything like that before,” Jonsin added. “It’s unique in a way for myself. It’s a place I’ve been wanting to go, and I’m so happy he allowed it to go down. He played a huge part in the record. Without him on it, it’s not the same. I don’t wanna give up too much about what it is and what direction.” Slim Shady told Yee that Recovery is diverse and doesn’t have a uniform sound. “There’s a variety of different things, different moods and things like that on there,” he said of the LP. “There’s not just one overall sound. It’s a bunch of different sh–.” Another surprise Em dropped about the album: for the first time, he will not have any skits. The often-hilarious segments had become a hallmark of a Slim Shady’s albums. What do you think Eminem’s Recovery LP will be like? Let us know in the comments below! Related Artists Eminem

Trey Songz Recalls His Barbershop Days On ‘When I Was 17’

‘I cut everybody’s hair for the prom,’ the singer says on new MTV show, premiering Saturday. By Jayson Rodriguez Trey Songz Photo: MTV News We all know Trey Songz is a ladies man, but the extent of his devotion to the opposite sex hasn’t truly been revealed until now. “When I was 17 I did my girlfriend’s eyebrows,” the singer confesses during the premiere of MTV’s new show “When I Was 17,” which premieres Saturday at 11 a.m. and also features Khloe Kardashian and Perez Hilton. But to be fair, Trey Songz was a barber-in-training at the time, keeping the fellas and the ladies looking sharp. It all started when he devised a plan to receive early dismissal from school and enrolled in a trade that he thought he would be able to take lightly. Instead, the Virgina native found himself with an intense schedule that included learning the finer points of hair care, from cutting heads to, well, waxing eyebrows. His skills eventually became so in demand that his friends lined up at his house to score haircuts before prom. “I cut everybody’s hair for the prom,” he recalled. “That whole week of prom, like every day, probably at least five to 10 guys would come over to the house to get a shape-up,” his cousin Jay chimed in. The downside to his popularity with his clippers resulted in some hotheaded customers — literally! “My clippers got so hot, I remember I messed my homeboy’s head up so bad,” he recalled, smiling. “He had scars for, like, the next two days. [ Traces his hair line to show where the damage was done. ] All that. My bad.” “When I Was 17” — this week featuring Trey Songz, Khloe Kardashian and Perez Hilton — premieres Saturday (May 1) at 11 a.m. on MTV. Related Artists Trey Songz

Owl City Is Under ‘Good Pressure’ While Working On New Music

‘There hopefully will be a few more ears willing to listen the next time around,’ he says. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Zach Smith Owl City’s Adam Young Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/ Getty Images By now, Adam Young’s journey from his parents’ basement to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 is pretty well-documented. And while it’s a pretty amazing story, the trick now for the man known as Owl City is to do it all over again. Young — who still lives in his tiny hometown of Owatonna, Minnesota (though he’s got his own place now) — is already at work on the follow-up to his breakout Ocean Eyes album. And yes, he freely admits to feeling all the pressure that comes along with the task. Though, unlike many, he’s channeling the increased focus to make his new songs even better. “I think it’s kind of a good pressure, in a way,” Young told MTV Radio. “Because I think through the upcoming singles, or singles from the new record that’s upcoming, I feel like now that I have a bit of an audience, there hopefully will be a few more ears willing to listen the next time around. [So] it’s kind of a good pressure, as far as having a bit more purpose behind the writing.” And while Young wouldn’t reveal what the new Owl City tunes are sounding like — it’s still sort of early, after all — he did admit that he’s finding solace in writing them. After all, the time he spends working on new stuff is about the only “personal time” he has in his increasingly hectic schedule. “Currently, the wheels are turning, so I’m really excited to get off the road here in a couple of weeks and get back down into the studio and kind of hide away and be kind of an evil genius for a little while and see what happens,” he said. “People are always telling you where to go, but … here and there I get a stab of inspiration, so I try to run to the laptop and type it out, or kind of demo it out on guitar.” The plan, Young said, is to continue working on the album between tours (his headlining jaunt runs until May then resumes in August, when he’ll open for John Mayer) and have the album out by the end of the year. That’s assuming everything goes according plan — something Young knows might not happen at all. “I’m excited to have a lot of time to mess around in the studio, and when I feel like I’m getting a bit stir-crazy, I’ll be able to get back on the road. So I’m excited,” he said. “Who knows, though. I’m kind of that perfectionist guy, so currently, I think the plan is for a new record in December, so a bit of a ways off but should be fun.” Are you excited for new Owl City music? B.o.B Says Debut Album Has Some ‘Surprising Factors’

‘You can’t just understand me with one song,’ he says of B.o.B Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray. By Steven Roberts Photo: MTV News B.o.B has forged quite a path for himself during his brief time in the music industry. The promising young MC is set to release his debut album, B.o.B Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray, on Tuesday (April 27) after a year that included announcements of alleged retirements , label squabbling and two name changes (Bobby Ray and then back again to B.o.B). Now B.o.B finds himself with the #2 record in the country and his collaboration with Paramore’s Hayley Williams following close behind. B.o.B said that he and his fans are finally ready for his full-length effort. “Getting to this point and finally getting an album out — I know I speak on behalf of all my fans — it’s been a very long wait and I feel like everybody’s finally ready for it,” he explained. “Even though I’ve had a lot of music in the past, I feel like now it’s timing, because timing plays a huge role in the success of things — especially me, and getting here really took a lot of online presence, a lot of performing. It took a lot of shows. “It took a lot of building relationships,” he continued. “Even with the fans, you have to build the relationship with the fans. Someone may just like one song, but that’s just one song. You really have got to build and grow. My music has a wide variety to it, so you can’t just understand me with one song.” B.o.B joked that it would probably take the average listener 10 songs to get to know him — his album is eclectic and not short on guest appearances, featuring T.I., Lupe Fiasco, Rivers Cuomo of Weezer and Eminem . “I think now people know what they should expect, and even still, playing the album for people they’re still like, ‘Wow, I didn’t know it was going to be that,’ ” he said of fans’ reactions. “I think the fans know to expect decent music. I don’t think anybody’s expectations will be low for it, but I feel like it will definitely have some surprising factors to it.” What do you think of B.o.B’s debut? Let us know in the comments below! Miley Cyrus’ Can’t Be Tamed Due June 22

Album will be available for download May 18; title track debuts this week. By Jocelyn Vena Miley Cyrus Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage Miley Cyrus ‘ next album, Can’t Be Tamed, is due June 22, Hollywood Records announced Monday (April 26). Cyrus worked with a number of producers on the album, including John Shanks (Jessica Simpson, Kelly Clarkson). The title track, the album’s first single, premieres Friday on MySpace and will hit radio May 3. “7 Things” collaborators Tim James and Antonina Armato produced and co-wrote the single with the pop star; Robert Hales (Demi Lovato, Jonas Brothers, Justin Timberlake) directed the clip for it. According to the label, “Can’t Be Tamed” is “a self-empowering song in which Miley asserts that she has to stay true to herself in relationships, and it is sure to become an anthem among her legions of fans around the world.” Can’t Be Tamed will also be available for download May 18. The album will come in two versions, one of which will be a combo CD/DVD pack; the DVD will contain never-before-seen footage from Cyrus’ Miley World Tour. Also, the concert will get its own prime-time network special, with more details to follow. Fans are especially excited about this album because it could be Miley’s last musical project for quite some time. “I have a record coming out in June, and that’s going to be the last thing I do in music for a while,” Miley said on “The View” earlier this year. “I just want to do films, ’cause I like being someone else. My music is kind of like my diary. I’ll always do that … I just feel like the music industry isn’t as positive as I’d like it to be.” Are you counting down the time until Miley releases her next album? Tell us in the comments! B.o.B’s ‘Airplanes, Part 2,’ Featuring Eminem And Hayley Williams, Hits The Net

‘Since the album is leaking, I want this one to come from ME,’ B.o.B tweets about posting song. By Steven Roberts B.o.B Photo: MTV News There’s been much hype surrounding B.o.B’s debut album, B.o.B Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray, which is slated to drop April 27. The album’s lead single and surprise hit, “Nothin’ on You,” featuring Bruno Mars, currently sits at #1 on iTunes’ songs chart . But once the album’s track listing was released, anticipation began to grow even more, thanks in large part to the Eminem feature on “Airplanes Part II.” B.o.B decided to unleash the track Monday afternoon (April 19) via his website , and it lives up expectations. The song features Em spitting another song-stealing verse, rapping hypothetically about what could have been failed opportunities. “Let’s pretend Marshal Mathers never picked up a pen/ Let’s pretend things would’ve been no different/ Pretend he procrastinated, had no motivation, pretend he just made excuses that were so paper thin.” Em continues, listing off scenes from his now-famous narrative of a tortured childhood and his tumultuous relationship with his mother. “Now pretend they ain’t just make him angry with this sh–/ And there was no one he could even aim [at] when he’s pissed at/ And his alarm went off to wake him, but he didn’t make it to the Rap Olympics/ Slept through his plane and he missed/ He’s going to have a hard time explaining to Hailey and Laney this food stamps and this WIC sh–/ Because he never risked sh–/ He hoped and he wished it.” The retrospective track also features Paramore’s Hayley Williams on the hook , who was as surprised as anyone by the Eminem collaboration. “I only found out about Eminem getting on the track like a month ago,” she told MTV News. “As if the song couldn’t get any better. He just slays me, he’s such a genius.” B.o.B told MTV News last week that it was a gift to work with one of his heroes. He said Em’s manager Paul Rosenberg grabbed Slim Shady’s attention with B.o.B’s first mixtape, Cloud 9, and he kept Em abreast of B.o.B’s work. He tweeted Monday that he wanted to share the song first, since his album was leaking. “Since the album is leaking … I want this one to come from ME. Hear ‘Airplanes Pt. 2’ ft. EMINEM & Hayley Williams of Paramore.” Related Artists Eminem Paramore B.o.B

Eminem Says ‘There Is No Relapse 2’

After repeated delays in releasing Relapse follow-up, rapper tweeted that the project has been scrapped. By Gil Kaufman Eminem Photo: Chelsea Lauren/ Getty Images Last spring, Eminem promised to drop a sequel to his Relapse album in late 2009, announcing that he’d almost finished work on the follow-up to his comeback effort. “It’s extremely close to being finished,” he said of the sequel LP. “It just depends on how many songs I wanna put on it.” Then, the rapper pushed the release back to 2010. And early Wednesday morning, he did a complete reversal, tweeting , “There is no Relapse 2. ” It was the first tweet from the rapper since March 29, when he promised, “Don’t worry. Some big news is coming. Soon.” With no elaboration, the latest terse missive sent fans into wild speculation about whether the notoriously exacting, and reclusive, MC had decided to completely scrap the album, or if he is headed back into semi-retirement. A spokesperson for Eminem could not be reached for comment at press time to elaborate on what his future plans are and what will become of the tracks he’d recorded for Relapse 2. Just last week, producer Just Blaze told MTV News that he’d been working on new songs for Eminem, saying “[the album], it’s getting there, but we still got a lot of work.” Though he was sworn to secrecy, Blaze did reveal that “a lot of good music is being made. … He’s really back spitting. The wordplay is crazy, the metaphors are crazy. He’s really back on his game. He had his ups, he had his downs, he’s back way, way, way up. This is definitely going to be up there with the best of his albums, for sure, for sure. The fact that he’s branched out working with a lot of different people now, collaborating in a lot of different ways that he never has before, I think he’s going to surprise a lot of people.” In addition to seemingly working on exciting new music, Em will also pop up alongside Paramore’s Hayley Williams on B.o.B.’s upcoming debut album, The Adventures of Bobby Ray. Williams was hyped about Slim Shady’s rhymes on the track they did together, “Airplanes (Part II),” saying, “he just slays me, he’s such a genius.” Related Artists Eminem
