Usher’s Looking 4 Myself Represents An ‘Evolution’

‘The last three years of my life have been extremely experimental in style, lifestyle, in music and in fun,’ Usher tells MTV News. By Christina Garibaldi Usher Usher ‘s seventh studio album may be titled Looking 4 Myself , but judging from the sound of his latest effort, he’s found what he’s looking for. Although the musical landscape has drastically changed over the years, unlike most artists, Usher has consistently evolved with it. He takes some risks with this album, and let’s face it: He’s earned the right to do just that. Usher has called his latest album’s sound “revolutionary pop” and that’s exactly what it is. Looking 4 Myself takes his fans on a musical journey that has the singer experimenting with different sounds and working with different producers, but at the same time sticking with what he does best — making infectious music that gets people on their feet and in the clubs. Usher himself admits that this album is unlike anything he’s done, and he recently told MTV News that he credits his life experiences as the real inspiration behind this new sound. “It is an experience that was kind of based off of the places that I’ve gone and the music that I’ve listened to, the styles that I’ve been inspired by and also some of the emotions that I’ve been able to feel,” Usher said. “You know, for me, every album should represent kind of an evolution. The last three years of my life have been extremely experimental in style, lifestyle, in music and in fun. I travel to different places, met and sat with different artists, made a lot of friends, and in doing that I created new music.” One can tell that Usher took his time with this album, meticulously picking out each beat and working with producers he’s never worked with before. He teamed up with Diplo , who produced the bold, artistic lead single, “Climax,” Swedish House Mafia and the late Amy Winehouse’s producer, Salaam Remi. Mixing these new producers with veterans like will.i.am , Max Martin and Pharrell , Usher found himself with a sound that mixes retro, electro and R&B. “I think when making this album, it was about what felt good. After I had an understanding of different styles, I began to find the music that I felt comfortable with, even though it was a little bit different,” Usher said. “I would find the melody and the emotion in it, most of the time it’s a beat, it’s a beat on the guitar or the piano, and then the melody finds its way and then the words begin to find a way. A lot of them came from travel so I thought back to where I was, kind of took my mental diary out and began to take myself back to that experience to what I think the people were experiencing or what I felt in that moment.” Looking 4 Myself drops Tuesday, June 12. Moguai Talks Revved-Up ‘In N’ Out’ Collabo With Tommy Trash

German DJ tells MTV News of creating big new sound on song’s re-edit to play for summer festival crowds. By Nick Philippou Moguai Photo: Thomas Niedermueller/ Getty Images EDM fans worldwide know Moguai as one of the most diverse and prolific music-makers on deadmau5’s Mau5trap label, an epicenter of EDM creativity. MTV News caught up with the German DJ recently, and he gave us all the details on his latest album, MPire, and on his synth-centric collaboration with Tommy Trash called “In N’ Out,” including their revved up re-edit that’s available on iTunes and is hovering high up on the Beatport charts. “We did [the track] three and a half years ago in Germany. I know him only from touring of Australia, and in Germany or Europe nobody knew him at that time,” Moguai told MTV News. “We did it, but it never came out. So I put it on the album, and right now it fits perfectly in the time.” Moguai said that “In N’ Out” landing on his album is the kind of happy coincidence that always happens when DJs tour together. He added that including the track on his album was even more exciting after Trash had a huge year in 2011, with tracks like “The End” and “Cascade” becoming staples in DJ sets around the world. “In N’ Out” works well with MPire ‘s melting pot of sound, which ranges from the quintessential progressive sound in “Lyme” to electro-house euphoria on the album’s title track. Moguai told MTV News that they wanted to have a really big new sound on their edit of “In N’ Out” for the huge festival crowds over the summer. Moguai’s adding more U.S. tour dates this summer. He’ll be making his first summer tour stop on June 8 at Level in Kelowna, British Columbia. Then he’s off to Chicago on June 9 to play Vision before hitting a plethora of festivals and nightclubs. “I think EDM has found a new home here in America, but it’s like the beginning, like hip-hop and R&B,” he said. “It’s a cultural thing right now. It won’t disappear anymore.” Moguai has seen EDM grow into the mainstream in his native Germany, and he sees many parallels between the explosion of EDM in America and what Europe experienced nearly two decades ago. “We had it in Germany,” Moguai told MTV News. “We’re still having it, but it feels like back in the days, back in the early ’90s, you know, when we started with Love Parade and with the Mayday. It began with 500 people around Berlin, around Brandenburg, and from there the next year it was 5000, then 50,000, then 500,000, then 1.5 million, then 2 million, you know, and it grew up. [It] feels quite the same [energy] here.” Related Artists Moguai

N.O.R.E. Breaks Down Partnership With Busta Rhymes For S.U.P.E.R.T.H.U.G.

‘He’s been the person … who would call me and say, ‘Yo I don’t hear no records on the streets, son,’ ‘ N.O.R.E. tells ‘RapFix Live.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway N.O.R.E. on “RapFix Live” Photo: Natasha Chandel/ MTV News N.O.R.E. is ready for the next chapter in his career. As half of the Queens, New York, rap duo Capone-N-Noreaga, N.O.R.E. dropped an underground rap classic with pair’s 1997 debut The War Report. As a solo artist on a major label, he’s made his mark with unforgettable street singles like “Superthug” and “Grimey.” Now N.O.R.E. is looking forward to going independent and releasing his S.U.P.E.R.T.H.U.G. album and movie. For the album, N.O.R.E. hooked up with his buddy Busta Rhymes , who will partner with Noreaga on the business end of things. “He’s been the person, when I was away and wasn’t around, who would call me and say, ‘Yo I don’t hear no records on the streets, son,’ ” N.O.R.E. said when he appeared on “RapFix Live” on Wednesday, using his best Busta impression. “He’s my peer and he’s also a fan, but he wants to see me win. So why do anything separate?” N.O.R.E. hasn’t signed to Busta’s Conglomerate record label, but they have joined forces. “I’ve been down too long to be anybody’s artist. So it’s a partnership, Militainment and Conglomerate as partners for the S.U.P.E.R.T.H.U.G. album.” The accompanying film will blend long-form music videos with some acting, similar to what Jay-Z did with his 1998 cult favorite “Streets Is Watching.” The flick will star N.O.R.E., Ice T, Lil Wayne, Slaughterhouse’s Joell Ortiz and Fred the Godson, just to name a few. As far as whether or not he will make another record with C-N-N partner Capone, N.O.R.E. isn’t sure. “We’re straight, we’re brothers,” he confirmed about their personal relationship. “As far as recording, I don’t know yet.” Before he commits to another album, he needs to see Capone exhibit a passion for the music. “He has to love his job just as much as me, and I’m not judging him, but the thing is I actually love this,” N.O.R.E. said. Japandroids Unassumingly Aim For Greatness On Celebration Rock

‘It all sounds ridiculous to me,’ drummer David Prowse says of the critical acclaim heaped on their second album. By James Montgomery Japandroids’ Brian King Photo: MTV News The best rock record of 2012 is not some overwrought, double-disc affair, nor was it presided over by a studio pro like Rick Rubin or Butch Vig, and it doesn’t contain a single instance of dubstep . Rather, it is an eight-song, 35-minute fist-pumper called Celebration Rock, the second (barely) full-length from Japandroids , a pair of unassuming everydudes from Vancouver. And what Celebration Rock lacks in general grandiosity, it more than makes up for in sheer sonic wallop, featuring thundering drums, rousing riffs and more top-volume “Woah-oh-ohs!” than any record in recent memory. Much like the duo that made it, the record is a brazenly blue-collar, proudly scruffy thing, a revelatory, celebratory disc that seems tailor-made for beery, cheery sing-alongs and all manner of drunken debauchery. It is meant to be played very loud, very often and very late at night. It doesn’t quit, and it never really slows down to catch its breath either. And it has, in the weeks leading up to its release, earned all manner of critical acclaim, including a Best New Music designation from Pitchfork and a recent review on Grantland that compared it to the Who’s Who’s Next, Bruce Springsteen’s Born to Run, Guns N’ Roses’ Appetite for Destruction, the Replacements’ Let It Be, Nirvana’s Nevermind and the White Stripes’ White Blood Cells … all in the space of a single paragraph. And if that last bit of praise seems a bit, well, unbelievable to you, you’re not alone. Not surprisingly, the guys who actually made the album are having a pretty hard time wrapping their heads around all the adoration Celebration Rock has received. “It all sounds ridiculous to me,” drummer David Prowse laughed. “I mean, come on. ” “We love all those records, and I don’t think it would be out of the realm of reality to say you could hear those influences on our record, but to compare them in a quality sense is pretty ridiculous,” guitarist/singer Brian King added. “Especially given the fact that a lot of those records weren’t hailed as masterpieces, like, the day after they came out. They had to earn their place in rock history … obviously, we’re nowhere near that yet.” Yet, they’re definitely appreciative of all the attention. After all, making Celebration Rock was a true task in every sense of the word. Burned out after two years of touring behind their debut (2009’s Post-Nothing ), Prowse and King returned home to begin work on the album, only to find, well, they had nothing left in the tank. And the situation certainly didn’t improve over the next few months. So, riddled with doubt and no record on the horizon, they decided to leave the city and head all the way across the continent, to Nashville, where they isolated themselves and decided to make an album that would give them an excuse to head back out on the road. “I think, in general, the first record was about being stationary and not wanting to be stationary, and this record is actually about being on the move and liking being on the move,” King explained. “When we wrote the first one, we were just a local band. We had never been on tour, we had no fans, so you’re just kind of writing the songs for yourselves, for fun. But having played a couple hundred shows in between writing this one, you now have a brand-new thing to take into account when you sit down to write a song. You have an audience, you play shows every night, you know when you play songs what works and what doesn’t. And you can apply that to the songwriting process. “And having played all those shows, we’ve known what songs garnered the kind of reaction that we wanted,” he continued. “And it was sort of like, ‘Let’s just write a whole album of those kind of songs, so when we play a set, instead of it being kind of like peaks and valleys of energy and excitement, it’s just one big peak the whole time we play.’ ” So far, Japandroids have basically done nothing but play the songs on Celebration Rock, and the end result has been shows that match the album’s exhilarating scope — “On a good night, it’s just a big, sweaty mess,” Prowse laughed — and they’ll remain on the road until the end of the summer. And then, perhaps, they’ll actually take a minute to bask in their accomplishments, and prepare themselves for the album’s inevitable conclusion on year-end “best of” lists. But then again, maybe they won’t. “Maybe when all the touring is done, we’ll enjoy it. Everything has been happening so fast, and when we’re on tour, the focus is on the shows, and everything else goes right through you,” King said. “It’s only when you get an extended break, you get a chance to breathe … and you can kind of take a load off and let it sink in. But even then, you know, we probably still won’t believe it.” Related Artists Japandroids

Justin Bieber Parties With Ludacris On ‘All Around The World’

Bieber gets his dance on with new Believe track, which dropped Tuesday. By Jocelyn Vena Ludacris and Justin Bieber Photo: Getty Images Justin Bieber has re-teamed with his pal Ludacris on “All Around the World,” off his forthcoming album Believe , and this party track is a far cry from the sugary sweet puppy-love track “Baby.” Grinding, fist-pumping and produced by the Messengers, the song sounds a bit like it could have been recorded by Bieber’s mentor Usher. A likely contender for the song of the summer, he’ll no doubt have fans dancing along with the track. It’s a definite party anthem, full of bleeps, dubstep breakdowns and swirling production. “All around the world/ People want to be loved, yeah/ ‘Cause all around the world/ They’re no different than us,” Bieber proclaims on the club-banging chorus. When Luda pops in to drop his verse, he’s no longer rapping about first love as he did on “Baby.” He’s definitely upped the swagger for this track, mirroring Bieber’s more mature stance on the track. He spits, “Once again, dynamic duos are back!/ JB, Luda!/ I love everything about you/ You’re imperfectly perfect!/ Everyone’s itching for beauty/ But they’re just scratching the surface.” For the single’s artwork, Bieber is holding an acoustic guitar over his shoulder, standing on the surface of the world, the moon glowing behind him. The acoustic guitar is an interesting choice given how much of a dance song “All Around the World” is. This is the third song dropped ahead of the album’s release on June 19. He already has girls swooning with “Boyfriend” and “Die in Your Arms.” According to Aceshowbiz.com , Bieber will release another new track, “As Long as You Love Me,” on June 12. “All Around the World” isn’t just the name of a new Bieber song. It also happens to be the title of his prime-time special airing June 21 on NBC . The hour-long show will give fans a behind-the-scenes look at his global promotional tour in support of the album. And given the chaos he’s caused everywhere he’s been, including stops in Norway and Paris , it should make for some interesting viewing. Pusha T’s Making ‘Superhero’ Music, The-Dream Teases

‘We just need him to be this guy for us right now, because I need that music in my car,’ Dream tells MTV News of Push’s album. By Nadeska Alexis with reporting by Rahman Dukes The-Dream and Pusha T Photo: MTV News Pusha T is still surprised that his opportunity to drop a solo album came around so quickly. But since he has the chance, the Clipse rapper and G.O.O.D. Music signee has immersed himself in a new learning experience with Kanye West and The-Dream, one he’s confident will result in a classic LP. Between the mad genius that is Kanye and the R&B storyteller that is The-Dream, Pusha might’ve just hit the production jackpot. “I’ve learned so much about song structure from Dream and I’ve learned so much from ‘Ye about finding the most colorful parts of your rhymes, editing it down and making sure, like, all the best parts of the rhyme are right in your face,” he told MTV News during a studio session with Mr. Terius Nash in Atlanta. “I’ve just totally taken this [attitude of] sitting back and absorbing everything they say.” After just a few sessions with Dream, Pusha said he has learned to accept the creative criticism as a tool to push further. “Sometimes [a track is] wrong. Sometimes it’s over-rapped and [The-Dream] will tell you, ‘Nah, stay right here. Stay within these lines, in these perimeters right here.’ This sh– is school, man; it’s real live school to me.” What might be school for Pusha, however, is just another spiritual experience for The-Dream, who’s infamous for crafting engrossing narrative across his projects. “It’s [being] spiritual about it and I think it’s just a timing thing,” The-Dream explained of how he builds the perfect songs. “It has a lot to do with what we want to hear, so it wasn’t [like I wouldn’t] allow Pusha to get off on rapping. We just need [him] to be this guy for us right now, because I need that music in my car. I’m R&B, but I grew up on Bankhead and I was riding around with UGK in my car, so I know what that real sh– is. I know how it makes you feel like a superhero.” “I want to feel like I’m literally beating my chest out the car,” he added. “You look over in my car — I’m mean-mugging you, you mean-mugging me, and I got Pusha in my deck. That’s how I want to feel. And so I was just providing that feeling, I just wanted to capture it in each song. We need [him] to say this because [he’s] talented enough to do it.” Thus far, we know that a few titles on the album will tentatively include “40 Acres” and “Automatic.” But Pusha, who recently dropped the fiery “Exodus 23:1,” is sure that the entire project will be cohesive and, of course, classic. “At the end of the day, we’re trying to make classic material,” he said. “Everybody who’s here is tuned into this project — period. It’s about being cohesive, and cohesive musicality is just not happening right now.” Since Pusha and The-Dream are hitting it off so well on this album, we asked if we might expect any future collaborations? “Man, I called him about the next album, already,” Pusha said without hesitation. And to that, The-Dream said with a laugh, “We will grow old together.” Are you excited for Pusha’s solo album? Tell us in the comments! Related Artists Pusha T The-Dream
