Lady Gaga Is Our Top Newsmaker Of 2011!

From Parisian fashion shows to presidential powwows, Gaga was everywhere in 2011 — and MTV News followed her every step of the way. By James Montgomery Lady Gaga Photo: Getty Images As 2011 draws to a close, it’s difficult to look back over the past 12 months and not remember all the headlines made by one Lady Gaga . Unlike some of her pop contemporaries, Gaga never seemed to take a day off. Hers was an unending, 365-day news cycle, a constant stream of tabloid speculation, Twitter missives, high-gloss fashion shoots, globe-spanning promotional appearances, red-carpet escapades, super-secret video projects, television specials and political stunts. On top of all that, she somehow also found time to release Born This Way, not only the year’s most anticipated album, but one of its most thought-provoking and forward-thinking too. At the end of the third year of her reign, it’s no longer a question of when she sleeps, but if she does at all. So it’s little wonder that, as MTV News counts down our Top Newsmakers of 2011 , Lady Gaga sits at #1. Bringing you every aspect of her every whim was practically a full-time job, one requiring its own team of tireless reporters, editors and producers (“MTV News: Special Gaga Unit”). And they were in overdrive from the very beginning of the year, when Gaga premiered the first Born This Way track at a Thierry Mugler fashion show in January, then followed that up by debuting the album’s title track and arriving at the Grammys “Born This Way” and “Judas” ), both of which were prologue to the release of the BTW album itself, a massive, multi-pronged promotional masterstroke that saw her appear everywhere from “Oprah” to “Ellen” and partner with everyone from Amazon to Zynga. She also guest-edited several publications, premiered an in-depth documentary, “Inside the Outside,” live on MTV and greeted fans on the eve of BTW ‘s debut in New York City. In short, she was everywhere, and her hard work (and 99-cent Amazon pricing plan ) paid off, as Born This Way sold 1.1 million copies in its first week , the most of any album since 50 Cent’s The Massacre in 2005. The album held on to #1 on the Billboard albums chart in its second week, too, making it one of the only releases this year to (temporarily) displace Adele’s 21 from the top spot. Once her album was out, if anything, Gaga only ramped up her schedule, premiering even more music videos, announcing a photo book and opening the 2011 Video Music Awards as her alter ego, Jo Calderone . As 2011 entered the home stretch, she met with President Obama to discuss the bullying epidemic, announced she was already working on the follow-up to Born This Way and basked in the glow of her three Grammy nominations, including a nod for Album of the Year, and plotted a massive 2012 world tour . And, with that last bit of news, she basically assured that she very well be next year’s Top Newsmaker too. Don’t worry, we’re already clearing our schedules. Over the past 12 months, Gaga not only continued her rule as the most-famous person on the planet, she expanded her empire. Her fame was hard-earned, and she doesn’t show any signs of relinquishing it anytime soon. Because above all else, Gaga is our most tireless superstar. Common is quite confident in his latest project, The Dreamer, The Believer , because he’s almost released the entire album one leak at a time. The latest preview is his collaboration with the legendary Maya Angelou , “The Dreamer.” Are Common’s Bulls Dreaming Of A Championship? I’ll go on record to say that I’ve liked everything that has come out from this album so far and this is shaping up to be Common’s best album ever. According to the tracklist this is the first song on the album and there is no better way to set the tone than with words from the a poem from Ms Angelou. “Once you find your shoulders dropping and your speech gets slow and hazy You’d better change your way of being before you found your brain got lazy You can build a better future when you join the winning team If you desire a bright tomorrow you must build a brighter dream Dare to let your dreams reach beyond you, know that history owns more than it seems We are here alive today because our ancestors dared to dream… ” RELATED POSTS: Who Keeps Common Looking So “Manly”? Nine-track EP includes tracks from Stronger and revamped versions of older songs. By Jocelyn Vena Kelly Clarkson Photo: Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images Kelly Clarkson is reimagining some of her songs for a special iTunes sessions album. The nine-track EP will drop December 27, with pre-orders kicking off Tuesday (December 13). According to a press release, the album will include three songs from Clarkson’s latest album, Stronger, including its lead single, “Mr. Know It All,” along with “What Doesn’t Kill You (Stronger)” and “You Can’t Win.” She will also kick it old-school with revamped versions of “Never Again,” “Since U Been Gone,” “Why Don’t You Try” and “My Life Would Suck Without You.” The final two tracks include the holiday classic “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” and an interview with the star. Clarkson’s Stronger 2012 world tour is slated to kick off January 13. She will start in Connecticut at the MGM Grand Theater at Foxwoods before making her way around North America, with stops in New York, Austin, Atlanta and Los Angeles. The tour will end April 10 in San Diego. Stronger, Clarkson’s fifth studio album, dropped in October and debuted at #2, right behind Coldplay’s Mylo Xyloto. Clarkson is readying the release of her next single, “What Doesn’t Kill You.” “There were a few different titles that were going around, and I think the reason why we came up with Stronger was just because every song was about empowerment and almost, like, overcoming stuff,” Clarkson told MTV News about the album title. “So, even if it was a bad situation and a sad song, it was about overcoming that. … So I think that’s why [we named it that], and I think after 10 years of doing it, you feel a little stronger personally and musically. People know you better. It’s just easier, I think.” Is your favorite Kelly Clarkson hit included on the new iTunes album? Let us know in the comments! Drake Announces 2012 Club Paradise Tour Dates

Young Money MC will kick off 17-city North American tour on February 14 in Miami before heading off to Europe. By Jocelyn Vena Drake Photo: John Shearer/ Getty Images Drake is inviting you to Club Paradise. The Take Care rapper has announced dates for a 2012 headlining tour. Drake’s Club Paradise Tour will kick off on Valentine’s Day (the same day fellow Young Money family member Nicki Minaj drops her album Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded ) in Miami before circling around 17 cities in North America, with stops in party spots like New Orleans, Austin and San Diego. The tour name pays homage to a track Drizzy dropped back in September. The tour will visit colleges across the U.S. before wrapping up the North American leg on March 11 in San Diego. Drake will then head to Europe for a string of additional dates, according to Pressparty . And Drake isn’t going at it alone. As previously confirmed, he’ll be joined by Hottest Breakthrough MC contenders Kendrick Lamar and A$AP Rocky. “I spent a lot of time out there [in Toronto]; that’s what this album is about,” Drake recently explained. “That’s what I’m gonna showcase. It’s the same thing with the tour: I wanna bring Kendrick, I wanna bring A$AP, those are guys that I love. It has nothing to do with people on my label,” he added. “Tyga’s out, Nicki’s working on an album and everybody else is doing their thing on the road with Wayne or with Wayne in the studio, so I just sort of showcased the music that I happen to love right now, and those are the two guys that I’m bringing out.” “I fought for this tour, I fought really hard for this tour because, of course, they want me to go get the big bucks, go into the stadiums and cash out,” Drake revealed to MTV News in October about the decision to play more intimate shows . “But I was just like, I really made this album for the same people that supported me since day one.” In addition to a tour, next year Drake and Rick Ross plan to drop the Y.O.L.O. (You Only Live Once) mixtape. “It’s official, the music is most definitely official,” Ross said. “But, you know, me being a boss, I’m trying to find a way that we could put that on the shelves for the world, baby. But it’s most definitely official.” The release rides on the heels of Drake’s chart-topping Take Care , which dropped in November. Dates for Drake’s North American Club Paradise Tour are as follows:

T.I. Says New Songs ‘Can Get Me In Trouble’

Trouble Man tracks ‘reminiscing on the days when I used to run wild and do my thing the way I used to do it,’ rapper tells MTV News. By Nadeska Alexis T.I. Photo: MTV News Immediately following his release from prison in September, T.I. got to work crafting his eighth solo album, Trouble Man , which he plans to debut early in 2012. During a recent stop in New York to promote his VH1 series, “T.I. and Tiny: The Family Hustle,” the Atlanta rapper and reality star told MTV News that he had 50 new songs recorded for the album in a matter of weeks. “My life inspires my lyrics at all times, so at that moment in time, when I first came home, I have about 15 songs just totally focusing on that,” T.I. said. “Out of those 15, I probably picked the two or three most significant, most compelling, impactful ones, and after I’ve been out for a minute, then I’ve got records totally focusing on speaking to people who can only focus on that and telling them I’m ready to move on.” The title of T.I.’s latest project is inspired by a 1972 Marvin Gaye song of the same name, which Tip felt was an accurate description for the body of work. “The name of the album is Trouble Man , and every song on here is about things that can get me in trouble,” he explained. “I’m reminiscing on the days when I used to run wild and do my thing the way I used to do it. I’ve got records that are just totally intellectually ignorant.” During his time behind bars, T.I. dropped his seventh album, No Mercy , and although it debuted at #4 on the Billboard 200 chart, the Rubberband Man plans to top that effort without breaking a sweat. “I was able to release a project that did well considering the circumstances, but I wasn’t able to put my all into it, which made it only a fraction of my usual contribution to the game,” he said. So far, T.I. has released three singles from Trouble Man : “I’m Flexin’ ” featuring Big K.R.I.T. was the first to debut, followed by “Here Ye, Here Ye” featuring Pharrell Williams and his latest, “Pyro.” Are you looking forward to T.I.’s next album? Blink-182’s ‘After Midnight’ An ‘Homage’ To ‘I Miss You’

Tom DeLonge jokes that his and Mark Hoppus’ lyrics are about ‘me and him kissing and making love to each other.’ By James Montgomery Blink-182 Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Blink-182 ‘s Neighborhoods album was rather famously recorded in fits and starts , so it’s sort of odd to learn the story behind “After Midnight,” the latest single from the disc, because, unlike pretty much everything else, this one was easy. ” ‘After Midnight’ was one of the last songs that we actually wrote for the album, and it originated from a beat that Travis [Barker] made up one day when he was working in the studio,” Mark Hoppus told MTV News on the set of the “Midnight” video in California. “We went in, listened to the beat, [and] it grabbed us immediately. It was one of those moments on the album where everybody just had a bunch of ideas all at once, and it came together pretty quickly. I think like in two or three hours, we had the basics of the song all written out.” “Midnight” is like most older Blink songs in its speedy creation, and its similarities with the band’s back catalog don’t end there: Much like “I Miss You,” a single from Blink’s 2003 self-titled album, the lyrics were handled by both Hoppus and DeLonge. “Tom and I divided the responsibility of writing the lyrics — Tom did the verses and I did the chorus — and we didn’t necessarily know what the other was writing about, but it fit together pretty well,” Hoppus explained. And DeLonge took things one step further by including lyrical nods to “I Miss You” in his verses on “Midnight.” Of course, he explained, that was only mostly intentional. And it’s not that he’s running out of ideas, he said. “Well, maybe a little bit, but not totally,” DeLonge said. “I threw in a little homage to ‘I Miss You,’ because, specifically on this song, I remember Travis saying that we should have something in the category of ‘I Miss You’ [on this album], and that’s when he showed us the beat. So when we wrote that, I remember that was in my mind.” Then again, DeLonge said he had ulterior motives for co-writing the song with Hoppus — ones that bordered (of course) on the sexual. “What’s cool about this song and ‘I Miss You,’ when Mark and I both write lyrics in different places, they come together and they’re both about the same thing, usually me and him kissing and making love to each other,” he laughed. “We end up writing super romantic songs. And I think it worked out really good on this one.” What do you think of “After Midnight”? Share your thoughts in the comments! Related Videos Set Visit With Blink-182 Related Artists blink-182

B.o.B, Lil Wayne Rhyme Beneath ‘Strange Clouds’ In Video

Song ‘really [lets] people know we’re back,’ Bobby Ray says of title track off upcoming LP. By Steven Roberts B.o.B. Photo: MTV News The video for B.o.B ‘s “Strange Clouds” dropped Monday (December 5) morning; the Motion Family-directed clip features Bobby Ray and Weezy F. rhyming in a field beneath a sky of — you guessed it — strange clouds. The song serves as the first single off B.o.B’s sophomore effort of the same name. But when MTV News recently caught up with B.o.B, he revealed that the Dr. Luke track was originally just something he wanted to rhyme on. “I was actually in mixtape mode when I heard it, so I just really wanted to go in on the beat. A hook came to me, and it kind of started to stick out to me the more and more I listened to it, and it ended up being the title track for the album,” said B.o.B. “I wanted to get an artist on it who could really bring it even more to life, the whole concept of ‘Strange Clouds.’ ” He said that “Strange Clouds” could mean a variety of things from lacunosus clouds to unidentified flying objects to puffs of the most exotic of plants. He wanted to get an artist on it who could really bring that idea to life, and who better than Lil Wayne? “We brought the record to him, we turned it around real quick, and when we put our final ears to it, we were like, ‘Yeah, this is the first one to come out and really let people know we’re back.’ ” B.o.B said the album’s sound was a fusion of a lot of different things. He said his music has danced around in a lot of genres, whether pop, rock or hip-hop, but ultimately he wants listeners to feel good about it. “Really, at the end of the day, music is supposed to make you feel good, and at the same time, I’m an MC at the end of the day also, so there’s a lot more of that in the album,” he said.
