Busta Rhymes ‘Honored’ To Be On Tha Carter IV

‘I was the last voice to be heard on the album,’ Busta Rhymes tells MTV News of Lil Wayne’s latest. By Rob Markman Busta Rhymes Photo: MTV News LOS ANGELES — With all of his versatility, Lil Wayne puts his range on display on Tha Carter IV . Songs like the acoustic-R&B “How to Love” and the John Legend-laced “So Special” show Weezy’s penchant for crafting female-friendly radio hits, while tracks like “6 Foot 7 Foot” and “John” revolve around Tunechi’s rap roots. The album’s “Intro,” “Interlude” and “Outro” also celebrate rapping for rapping’s sake. On the “Intro,” Wayne raps solo over a pounding, bottom-heavy beat supplied by newcomer Willy Will. Halfway through the album, Missouri MC Tech N9ne and Outkast spitter Andre 3000 appear atop the same instrumental on the C4 “Interlude.” Finally, on the LP’s “Outro,” Bun B, Nas, Shyne and Busta Rhymes take their turns over that beat. As standalone cuts, the three tracks feature some pretty aggressive rap bars, but we couldn’t help but notice that if Wayne were to string them together into one track, it might have been one of rap’s most star-studded posse cuts. “I actually close out Tha Carter IV. I’m the last voice you hear on Tha Carter IV, ” Busta Rhymes pointed out to MTV News on the 2011 VMA , black carpet. “It’s special because I didn’t know that’s what [Wayne] was gonna do with it.” With his rapid-fire verse, Busta boasts of his “uncompetewitable” rhyme style before toasting to Weezy by rhyming, “OK, enough of that, now I’m out the door/ Tunechi, thanks for giving us a whole ‘nother classic with Tha Carter IV. ” “When we did the joint, he didn’t really tell us how he was gonna put it together. All I knew was that when it was done, it was me, Bun B, Nas and Shyne, and I was the last voice to be heard on the album, so I feel honored for that,” Busta said. Although he had yet to hear the completed version of C4, Bussa Bus was excited for his friend and frequent collaborator, Wayne. “I didn’t really get to hear it in its entirety yet, but I hope that everybody understands that that man put his foot in this album,” he said. “From what I did hear, being in the studio with him, he goin’ ape sh– on it.” Share your reviews of Tha Carter IV in the comments below! Kelly Clarkson Sasses Off On New Single ‘Mr. Know It All’

Singer drops first track from October’s Stronger album on her website. By Jocelyn Vena Kelly Clarkson Photo: RCA Records Kelly Clarkson dropped her new single “Mr. Know It All” on her website this week. It’s the first track off her Stronger album , due in October. The song is an obvious Clarkson joint: feisty and straightforward, with a strong melody and a sing-along chorus. The midtempo breakup tune is about a girl letting her guy know that despite thinking he’s got it all figured out, he doesn’t. On the chorus, she blasts, “Oh, you think that you know me/ Know me/ That’s why I’m leaving you lonely/ Lonely/ ‘Cause baby you don’t know a thing about me/ You don’t know a thing about me.” She’s equally sassy on the bridge when she sings, “So what, you’ve got the world at your feet/ And you know everything about everything/ But you don’t/ You still think I’m comin’ back, but baby you’ll see.” The track was written by Brett James (who has a country pedigree, having written for Carrie Underwood), Ester Dean (Beyonc

J. Cole Debuts Sideline Story In New York

‘Jay-Z doesn’t owe me a verse because I signed to him,’ Cole tells a room of writers after playing his debut album for them. By Rob Markman J. Cole (file) Photo: Johnny Nunez/WireImage J. Cole has had his whole life to make his first album, and for Cole World: The Sideline Story , the Roc Nation rookie draws on a combination of his past failures and victories to tell his tale. A select number of writers were invited to Roc the Mic studios in Manhattan on Wednesday night to hear the North Carolina MC’s debut, which is due out September 27. Though the album is almost complete, the guests were asked not to report any song titles or lyrics because they are still subject to change. In many ways, Cole feels like an underdog, and on Cole World , he raps as if he may never get another shot. In a wrap-up speech delivered to his guests, he even compared himself to the character Daniel “Rudy” Ruettiger from the 1993 film “Rudy.” In the movie, Rudy dreamed of playing football at the University of Notre Dame but faced immeasurable odds due to his small frame and lack of natural ability. It isn’t until the waning moments of the final game that Rudy is allowed to suit up and achieve his dream. Familiar previously released songs like “Work Out,” the Drake-assisted “In the Morning” and “Lights Please” anchor the album, which revolves around heartbreak, triumph and good old-fashioned storytelling. On one gut-wrenching track, which Cole produced himself, the rapper strikes a chord when trying to convince his pregnant girlfriend to abort their child. In the song’s second verse, he switches roles and rhymes as if he is a pregnant woman — singing in a higher pitch for effect. J revealed to the room that this song in particular had been completed even before he signed with Jigga in 2009. In fact, four of the album’s songs were holdovers from his early days. Cole produced most of the LP himself, though Danjahandz and NO I.D. both contributed. Although Drake appears on “In the Morning” and Trey Songz sings the hook on the album’s next single “Can’t Get Enough,” the record is light on featured guests. But what about Hov? One of the big questions surrounding the album has been whether Cole secured a featured verse from Jay-Z . The answer is no — well at least not yet. As of now, the rapper has until August 20 to turn his album in, so there is still hope for a last-minute collaboration from the God MC. If Jay does decide to lend his bars to Cole World, the rapper already has a track set aside — he’s actually left the third verse open just in case. If not, Cole doesn’t feel slighted but motivated. “Nobody owes me anything,” he told the crowd. “Jay-Z doesn’t owe me a verse because I signed to him.” No, Jay has given J. Cole something much greater: a chance to make his dreams a reality when the album is released on September 27. The guest verse is merely a bonus. Related Artists J. Cole
