And while renditions of Ellie Goulding’s “Starry Eyed” and Prodigy’s “Smack My Bitch Up” remain in their arsenal, the duo are on the precipice of new material, set to be unleashed by a mammoth single bearing co-production by a titanic name. “People of the Night,” which the BBC’s Pete Tong debuted about a month ago, is anthemic and features a soothing vocal by Eleanor Bodenham from the band Lover Lover, a blessing delivered by the track’s production partner, dance music legend Ti
MTV News crashed Jay-Z and Kanye’s pop-up store in NYC to speak to Throne fans. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Steven Roberts Kanye West and Jay-Z Photo: Kevin Mazur/WireImageGetty Images/ NEW YORK — “We were at our office and one of my colleagues said, ‘I just saw on Twitter that there is a new pop-up shop that’s selling Watch the Throne, ” said a man identified only by his Twitter handle @hiprobbie. “So we ran down here to check it out.” And just like that, fans scurried down to 201 Mulberry Street, in the SoHo section of Manhattan, to celebrate the physical retail release of Jay-Z and Kanye West’s combo album . Things started off slowly at first. MTV News was on the scene at approximately 11:30 a.m. ET and the storefront, which was wrapped in a gold Riccardo Tisci-designed print, was barren out front. It wasn’t until noon, when MTV broke the news and folks from Kanye’s camp began to tweet about the surprise retail space, that fans started to show up. At about 1 p.m. ET, fans were let in to the surprise store, where the Throne album was sold and the album’s art was displayed. The biggest attraction: the chopped-and-screwed Maybach from Hov and Yeezy’s “Otis” video , which premiered on MTV on Thursday. “That’s the first thing you see when you get in the store is the Maybach, and it’s all tore up,” hip-hop fan Max Lockie said. “The engine’s exposed, the doors are ripped off, the trunk’s split open so you can see the inside of it.” Dorian Talker was equally excited to see the tricked-out whip, which will eventually be auctioned off for charity, though he did express just a bit of disappointment. “I would’ve liked it better if Jay-Z and Kanye had been in the car, but, you know, you get what you get,” he said. See what car expert Myles Kovacs estimates the Maybach’s work cost. The pop-up store caps off an exciting week in which fans waited until Monday’s early morning hours to purchase the album on iTunes. Then on Thursday, Throne fanatics got to see WTT first visual component when the “Otis” video debuted. On Friday, folks were still buzzing. “It was dope. What I liked about the video most was it seemed like they were having a good time,” Jonas Guerrero said. “They were stuntin’ on a whole ‘nother level. The whole big Riccardo Tisci flag on the back, and they were all smiles … I haven’t seen a video like that in a long time.” What did our panel of tastemakers have to say about the “Otis” vid? Check it out here. Talker agreed. He applauded the video’s director for letting Jay and ‘Ye just let it all hang out. “I think Spike Jonze just allowed Kanye and Jay-Z to do their thing,” he said. “It wasn’t overly conceptual, which I think was a benefit to the video.” What do you think of the “Otis” video? Superstar duo will sell copies of their brand-new album from shop in New York’s SoHo neighborhood. By Rob Markman The Watch The Throne pop-up store in New York City Photo: Rob Markman/MTV News NEW YORK — Watch the ingenuity. In what has already been an unorthodox album roll-out, Jay-Z and Kanye West are keeping the surprises coming during the record release for their tag-team LP, Watch the Throne . On Friday afternoon (August 12), the duo erected a pop-up store to sell copies of the album in Manhattan’s trendy SoHo neighborhood, and MTV News was among the first inside. When the album dropped on Monday as an iTunes digital exclusive , it seemed that Friday’s physical release of the LP would be nothing more than an afterthought. Not so! The store-front, located at 201 Mulberry Street, is regally wrapped in gold, just like the album’s Riccardo Tisci-designed cover art, the real attraction however is inside. As if slinging albums weren’t enough, Hov and Yeezy are putting the tricked-out Maybach from their “Otis” video on display inside of the retail space. Read what some hip-hop DJs had to say about “Otis” as an unconventional single. The black luxury vehicle sits there in all its remixed glory: hood on the trunk, trunk on hood, doors ripped off. Unfortunately, there is a strict no photo/no video policy in the store, but visitors are allowed to walk right up to the ‘Bach-mobile and can even touch it. On a large overhead screen, the Spike Jonze-directed “Otis” plays on a loop. There are even rumors that Hov himself will make an appearance sometime tonight and the store will be up until Sunday. For fans stopping by the Mulberry Street store, it will be open on Friday until 10 p.m. ET, on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., and on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Jay, who doesn’t take to his Twitter often, posted the SoHo address this afternoon. So much of the Watch the Throne release has been shrouded in mystery. Other than “H.A.M.,” which was released in January and the LP’s first official single “Otis,” fans had heard nothing from Hov and Yeezy’s project until it was released Monday morning. Who knows what they will come up with next. What did you think of the “Otis” video? Share your thoughts on Facebook or tweet your reactions and videos @MTVNews with the hashtag #MTVOtis! Jay-Z and Kanye West’s collaboration is getting some big first-week estimates from the experts. By Rob Markman Jay-Z and Kanye West Photo: Getty Images There is little doubt that when Watch the Throne debuts on the Billboard albums chart next week, Jay-Z and Kanye West will snag the #1 spot. The real question is: How much will the superstar duo actually sell when the smoke clears and the first-week retail registers are tallied? “I’m gonna say, ladies and gentlemen: 450,000,” Shade 45’s DJ Wonder said on Wednesday’s “RapFix Live.” Statik Selektah and Hot 97’s DJ Kast One predicted similar numbers. Kast guessed the duo would sell anywhere from 350,000 to 400,000 thousand copies of their new LP, while Statik, who spins on Shade 45’s “Showoff Radio” show on Thursday nights, thought the Throne would hit the 500,000 sales mark and earn themselves a gold plaque in the first week. Get a sneak peek of the Throne’s “Otis” video, and tune in to MTV, MTV2, mtvU, MTV.com or BET at 8:56 p.m. ET/PT to watch the world premiere. On Monday, the day of Watch the Throne ‘s exclusive iTunes release, Billboard.biz predicted that the mega-collaboration would sell anywhere between 400,000 and 500,000 units. But the very next day, the site reported that based on the first day of sales, WTT was projected to go upwards of 500,000 in week one. Estimates may be adjusted again once the physical copy of the album is released to retailers on Friday, but as of now, Vibe editorial director Datwon Thomas’ guess is on pace with current projections. “I’m going just north of half-a-mil, only because of the fact that they’re coming out so unorthodox,” he said of Watch the Throne ‘s rollout , which as of now has produced no crossover single, just the boom-bap affair, “Otis.” “I don’t know if Middle America has latched onto the concept of just throwing out a hot record that can just carry through urban areas and not lift off with the traditional hook that they’re used to from a Jay or Kanye.” Some wondered if superstars like Hov and Yeezy were actually capable of selling a million copies in one week. Rap Radar founder and Respect magazine editor in chief Elliot Wilson didn’t rule out the romanticized sales figure, though he feels it may be unobtainable at this point. “I think they’d love to sell a million records in the first week and show that you could still do something like that,” he said. “I think it’s possible. Is it probable? Probably not, but I think it will do big-boy numbers first week. I think it will do at least 400k or something like that.” What do the critics think of Watch the Throne ? No one has ever entertained the thought that Watch the Throne could tank. Even though fans had only heard two songs leading up to the album’s drop (“H.A.M.” and “Otis”), Jay-Z and Kanye’s respective legacies were enough to ensure the Throne’s sales success. The real question was whether it would meet critical expectations. “I don’t think [Kanye and Jay] really care what the sales look like,” Wilson said. “I think it’s more about people saying the album’s dope and the peer group props that come with it, and the influence and the impact and the fact that, ‘Damn we really did do it. We really did get it out there. Now we’re gonna go on tour, and it’s a celebration.’ ” What are you expecting from the “Otis” video? Join the conversation on Twitter with the hashtag #MTVOtis. ‘Nah, we ain’t longer than Detox, ‘ Styles tells MTV News, comparing group’s first album since 2000 to Dr. Dre’s long-awaited project. By Rob Markman Jadakiss and Styles P Photo: MTV News When the LOX dropped their last album, We Are the Streets, the world had just finished breathing a collective sigh of relief, thankful that their computers didn’t crash in the Y2K scare. Not that the Yonkers, New York, rap trio made up of Jadakiss, Styles P and Sheek Louch haven’t been busy dropping solo albums and mixtapes over the past 11 years. “Paperwork, paperwork, it ain’t on us. All I’m gonna say is, LOX-wise, you hear how many verses we do, freestyles we do, songs we do, LOX songs we drop here and there,” Styles P said about the group’s long-awaited third album . “Due to common sense, it’s paperwork. When the paperwork pans out, you got LOX. That’s all I’m gonna say. We would’ve been gave y’all LOX.” The LOX got their start on Diddy’s Bad Boy Records in 1997 after they dropped their debut single, “We’ll Always Love Big Poppa.” The song stood as a dedication to the Notorious B.I.G. after he was murdered earlier that year. In 1998, the group dropped their debut album, Money, Power, Respect, but soon after, they became disgruntled with their label and organized a “Let the LOX Go” campaign to be let out of their Bad Boy contract. Diddy eventually obliged , and the threesome dropped their sophomore album on Ruff Ryders in 2000. Aside from the group effort, each member dropped a number of solo albums on various labels, leaving entangled contracts that are now getting sorted out. “It’s a lot of heads involved with the new LOX album. You got Ruff Ryders, you got Bad Boy, you got Interscope. It’s a lot of politics in one set of paperwork, but it’s gettin’ close,” Styles said. If Dr. Dre’s Detox is rap’s longest-delayed LP, then the LOX aren’t far behind. Jada and P are amused at the comparison. “Nah, we ain’t longer than Detox. We close! We right behind it; we ain’t neck and neck, though,” Styles said, laughing at the notion that his group could eclipse Dre’s drought if the producer’s album is dropped this year as planned. Jadakiss begged to differ, starting a little debate with his rhyme partner. “We passed Detox, ” ‘Kiss proclaimed. “Nah, they said Detox was coming in ’99,” Styles argued. Despite common misconceptions based on the album’s title, it was 1999 when Dre dropped his 2001 LP. Work on his third album was said to have started in 2003 , but details are sketchy. Jada suggests a joint Dr. Dre and LOX album release to satisfy the fan’s demand. “We need to do a double album: the Detox and the new LOX album,” he joked. After a few laughs, Jada got serious and said the group was close to a breakthrough in the legal holdups, but he wouldn’t nail down a specific label where the album would be released. “Big shout-out to J Records, Geffen Records, Atlantic, Warner,” he said. “Big shout-out to all of these labels.” What are you expecting from new LOX music? Amy Lee tells MTV News the band is preparing to end four-year road hiatus with run of ‘big energy’ shows. By James Montgomery Evanescence’s Amy Lee Photo: MTV News It’s been nearly four years since Evanescence wrapped the tour in support of their The Open Door album … and in the time since, as any fan of the band will tell you, Amy Lee and Co. spent most days doing anything but Evanescence . Of course, all that has recently changed. Their self-titled comeback album is due in stores October 11, and the snarling first single, “What You Want,” is waiting in the wings. Last weekend, they shot a video for the song, and they’re gearing up for a massive world tour . In a way, you could say they’re making up for lost time, which has made the past month a rather hectic ride, indeed. “We haven’t started rehearsing [for the tour] yet, actually. … It’s just been a crazy run-around. We did a big photo shoot in L.A. for a couple days and I’ve been running around doing a lot of press,” Lee told MTV News. “We’re putting the album art together, getting the mixes done at the same time — I’m carrying my speakers around everywhere with me and, like, setting them up in different hotel rooms.” Evanescence have also been focused on finishing the track list for their album — a process made easier by the fact that they’ll also release a deluxe edition that features all 16 recorded tracks — and finalizing the routing for that aforementioned tour. And then it’s full-steam ahead … regardless of whether everyone’s ready or not. “I wish I had more time to prepare,” Lee said of the tour set to kick off in October. “No, we’re excited to get back out there. All we can do is just run as fast as we can. Everything’s just crammed really tight, from the video to the promo to the rehearsal,” she added. “I’m ready to get to rehearsal, because I’m starting to feel like, ‘OK, we’ve got dates booked, we haven’t practiced yet.’ Starting to get a little nervous, but in a good way. … [We’ll] be back in front of the fans, and feeling that energy again. That’s going to be good for my brain.” And when Evanescence do return to the road, what can fans expect? Well, a solid dose of the new album, of course, but also plenty of the old hits too. Of course, Lee can sum it all up pretty nicely. “It’s just going to be straight-up rock. Big energy, this album is just a fast-paced rock ride. Is that dumb to say? Fine, make fun of me,” she laughed. “We’ve got three albums now to pull from so, of course, we want to play the new ones but, of course, we’re going to play the old ones too. It’s going to be a lot. ” Are you looking forward to a new album from Evanescence? Tell us in the comments!
