Kim Sozzi Ready To Release Self-Titled Second Album

Dance hitmaker calls ‘Little Bird’ Annie Lennox cover ‘a standout track.’ By Adam Stewart Kim Sozzi Photo: MTV News She’s an original Jersey Shore girl. She didn’t need to GTL or puff-her-poof before taking the stage at the legendary D’Jais nightclub in Belmar, New Jersey. All she needed was great music and her loyal fans. Kim Sozzi has always seemed to have a knack for that true Jersey Shore vibe. Growing up in Long Island, New York, and getting her start in the club scene, Sozzi is one of dance music’s most-iconic vocalists. Through various projects, labels and collaborations, she has maintained her position as one of underground dance music’s most-sought-after hitmakers, and after two years, is set to release her second studio album, the self-titled Kim Sozzi . While no official release date has been set, Sozzi assured MTV News that the album is complete and ready to go. “It’s totally different from my dance [music] and my previous singles,” Sozzi said. “I wanted to do something a little more mainstream. Hopefully my dance fans are going to follow me over, but if not, I have plenty of classic Kim Sozzi songs on the album.” After releasing “Rated R,” the album’s first single, back in December, Sozzi is gearing up to release the second track, “Little Bird,” a cover of the Annie Lennox classic. “I love, love, love this record. It came out great,” Sozzi gushed. “The guys from Beatport actually did the production. They did a killer job. This is definitely going to be a standout track on the album … It’s totally a song for the fans.” Produced by former Beatport staffers Brad Roulier and Shawn Sabo, known as Manufactured Superstars, “Little Bird” shows Sozzi at her best. With her distinctly sexy swagger and stunningly soulful vocal prowess accompanied by clean and crisp production from the Denver duo, this little birdie seems geared to fly up the charts. Sozzi has been a magnet for producers since she burst onto the scene back in 2001 with the epic Sound Factory NYC anthem “Feelin’ Me,” produced by Hex Hector and Jonathan Peters. She was launched almost instantly on a path to chart success, becoming a go-to for dance producers and topping the Billboard dance chart several times. In 2004, she joined the production quintet Mynt, which pumped out classic dance smashes such as “How Did You Know?” “Stay” and “Still Not Sorry.” To the dismay of their fans, the group split up in 2006 amid what many speculated were creative differences. “It’s tough because when you’re working with producers, it’s a double-edged sword,” Sozzi explained. “It’s great because you have these built-in people working around the clock and playing and producing, but then you also have everyone wanting to be the star, so it’s definitely a bit tricky. “But luckily, since parting ways, we are all friends again, which is nice, but I always wanted to be a solo artist, so I’m happy we did it amicably. It sounds like a divorce, but it kind of was.” Rich “DJ Riddler” Pangilinan , a well-known DJ/producer and former Mynt member, shared a similar sentiment regarding the split, saying he’s also glad the past is behind them. “It’s no secret that there were some differences in opinions on that project and some feelings were hurt on both sides,” he said. “It took some time to mend those fences, however, we were friends before that project, and we stayed friends after. “If there was one thing that I regret about that project it is that we never really got to do another album. I think that with what we both know now, we could come up with something very special.” Whether or not a Mynt reunion would ever be in the cards, Sozzi is keeping her eyes and ears open, always seeking to make moves and pair up with the hottest names in dance music. “I would love to work with deadmau5, David Guetta. I’m a big fan of Kaskade; I’ve been trying actually to get Ryan to work on one of my tracks. There’s so many great people doing great music and great tracks that I would like to work with.” Are you awaiting the release of Kim Sozzi’s next album? Tell us below!

Lady Gaga’s Born This Way: What We Know So Far

MTV News rounds up what we know about the songs on the May release. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga Photo: Paul Warner/WireImage With months to go until we can get our hands on Lady Gaga’s Born This Way, the pop star has been slowing leaking details about the vibe of the May 23 release. Fans have already heard the first single of the same name, and in several recent interviews Gaga has given out a few facts about the songs that fans will hear on the highly anticipated release. While we wait for more, here’s a recap of what we know so far. In the latest issue of Vogue, Gaga revealed that the album’s next single is “Judas,” which producer RedOne has described as shocking. “The melody sounds like it was written for the Ronettes,” the Vogue writer comments. “But it is set to a sledgehammering dance beat and is about falling in love with backstabbing men of the biblical variety.” On Tuesday morning, Gaga confirmed to Carson Daly on Amp Radio that “Judas” will be the second single. “It’s about always falling in love with the wrong man over and over again,” she said. ” ‘Judas’ is a very very dark song. It’s rad.” She also told Vogue about another track on the record, “Americano,” describing it as “a big mariachi techno-house record, where I am singing about immigration law and gay marriage and all sorts of things that have to do with disenfranchised communities in America. … It sounds like a pop record, but when I sing it, I see Edith Piaf in a spotlight with an old microphone.” When Gaga called into Ryan Seacrest’s radio show on Tuesday, she described the song “Government Hooker,” which is “one of my favorites” and “has more of a hip-hop beat,” she told Seacrest. “We double-timed the beat. It’s a super fast, really hard record, and the lyrics are really filthy. It’s also empowering, but more in the direction of sexual female empowerment.” On Seacrest, she teased the lyrics to another song, “Hair.” On it she sings, “This is my prayer that I’ll die living just as free as my hair.” “It’s really up-tempo. It’s a club record, but has a Bruce Springsteen vibe,” she explained. “It’s really interesting because it’s putting sax on a huge dance record.” She talked about “Hair” again when she visited New York radio station Z-100 . “Some of those themes are explored more on this album. To put my money where my mouth is [regarding themes of empowerment on this song and album].” She went on to describe the entire album as “eccentric” during the chat. Before we can hear anything new from Gaga, she did also reveal one new detail to Daly about the forthcoming video for “Born This Way,” which will be about “the birth of a new race within the race of humanity. The birth of a new race that doesn’t bear any prejudices. “I think the most important thing is that I continue to grow, and I knew when I put ‘BTW’ it would be a transitional moment, because it doesn’t sound like [my previous singles,” she said, adding that it is the “marijuana” to the “heroin” of the album and that it is a much lighter song than “Judas.” And for those who can’t wait, she had this to share while on Z-100, “I’m gonna be releasing about two to three songs before the album comes out on iTunes.” Related Videos Lady Gaga’s Grammy Night

Arcade Fire’s Album Of The Year Grammy Stuns Publicist

Merge Records’ Christina Rentz recalls her awards-show experience. By James Montgomery Arcade Fire at the 2011 Grammy Awards Photo: Getty Images As the week draws to a close, many still can’t believe Arcade Fire managed to trump Eminem and Lady Gaga to win Album of the Year at Sunday’s Grammy Awards . And if you’re one of those who are still coming to grips with the upset, well, you’re not alone. Turns out, even the band’s publicist can’t believe it. In fact, on Grammy night, she had made peace with the fact that Arcade Fire seemed destined to go home empty-handed. In a new Billboard.biz story, Merge Records’ publicist Christina Rentz writes that, after watching her band go 0-for-2 during the Grammy’s pre-telecast awards (they lost both Best Alternative Album and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocals to the Black Keys), she was resigned to the belief that the band would lose Album of the Year, too. In fact, she thought Eminem had it sewn up. “The production value was amazing, and it was incredibly exciting to be in the room. When Eminem came onstage and blew the roof off the place, I thought we were sunk for sure,” Rentz wrote. “But Jamie [Beck, Merge’s retail director] had been saying all weekend that we were going to win. She gave me very good reasons why, but I still didn’t think it was possible. As the night wore on, she persisted in her certainty, but it wasn’t until Eminem won Best Rap Album that I felt the familiar sweaty palms again.” When Album of the Year was announced, her feelings of nervousness quickly changed to jubilation — much to the consternation of those seated around her. “Barbra [Streisand] announced the Album of the Year: ‘And the Grammy goes to … The S-S-S-S-Suburbs ? We began screaming and jumping as our section emptied out with people muttering under their breath, ‘Who is Arcade Fire?’ ” she wrote. “The band accepted the award then immediately set up for their second song, with Win [Butler, the band’s lead vocalist and songwriter] putting his Grammy on top of an amp so he could pick up his guitar … my favorite moment of the evening! “They could not stop smiling and neither could we. Together, we had accomplished something pretty incredible and hopefully inspired musicians everywhere not to compromise when it is important.” And afterwards, having bested Eminem for the night’s biggest award, Rentz and Beck did what any newly minted Grammy winner would do: They partied hard. In their own way, of course. “We then phoned our label manager Stacy ‘Spott’ Philpott and said, ‘Holy crap, what do we do now?’ ” she wrote. “I still don’t fully know the answer, but at the time, it seemed like the best thing we could do was to get in our red Mustang, throw the top down, drive to the after-party to hug our friends in Arcade Fire, high-five their manager Scott Rodger and then get back to work on Tuesday, the release date for two new albums from Telekinesis and East River Pipe.” Were you surprised by Arcade Fire’s win? Wiz Khalifa Gives Fans Cabin Fever Mixtape

New offering includes Lex Luger-produced track ‘Taylor Gang.’ By Jayson Rodriguez Wiz Khalifa Photo: MTV News Wiz Khalifa recently wrapped up work on Rolling Papers, his album due next month on Atlantic Records. But the Pittsburgh rapper continues to stay on the same grind that delivered him the MTV News’ Hottest Breakthrough MC crown last year and a selection as an 11 for ’11 pick this year. He released a mixtape offering, Cabin Fever, on Thursday night to satiate his fans before his official project drops on March 29 . The nine-track effort includes the Lex Luger-produced “Taylor Gang,” which arrived online earlier this month. “Tay-lor Gang, Tay-lor Gang, Tay-lor Gang, Tay-lor,” Wiz chants on the “Taylor Gang” hook, before going into a more melodic chorus. “And you know I’m repping the Taylors, all my weed from Cali, so you know I’m smoking flavors.” Kanye West prot

Grammys Give Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber Immediate iTunes Bump

Cee Lo, Esperanza Spalding, Lady Antebellum and more also see post-show sales increases. By Gil Kaufman Lady Gaga performs at the Grammys on Sunday Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images It didn’t take long for the big winners at Sunday night’s Grammy Awards to get an iTunes bump. Less than 24 hours after the show, the iTunes singles and albums charts were flooded with songs that were either performed on the show or which won awards during the program. At press time on Tuesday morning (February 15), the iTunes singles tally was topped, not surprisingly, by Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way,” which got its televised debut during the show, followed by Dr. Dre’s “I Need a Doctor,” which Eminem and Dre (making his first televised performance in nearly a decade) also performed on the show. Justin Bieber’s “Never Say Never” was at #3, followed by Cee Lo Green’s “F— You,” which was one of the most colorful and bizarre live spots in the three-and-a-half-hour show thanks to his outer-space Henson Puppet band and a cameo from a sultry Gwyneth Paltrow . Mumford & Sons also got some iTunes love after playing on the show with folk legend Bob Dylan, which helped their song “The Cave” hit #5, followed by the night’s big Grammy victors, Lady Antebellum , and their Song and Record of the Year winner, “Need You Now.” Although she didn’t perform “Firework” on the Grammys, Katy Perry’s anthem hung in at #7, ahead of Rihanna, who had two shots onstage at the Grammys. Her “S&M,” whose video is the subject of legal action, came in at #8, with Bruno Mars ‘ “Grenade” and non-Grammy performer Avril Lavigne’s “What the Hell” rounding out the top 10. Just outside the top 10, there were plenty more Grammy bumps to be found: Cee Lo’s censored “Forget You” (#11), Mumford & Sons’ “Little Lion Man” (#12), Muse’s “Uprising” (#20), Rihanna and Drake’s “What’s My Name?” (#21), Eminem’s “Love the Way You Lie” (#24) and Florence and the Machine’s “Dog Days Are Over” (#29). The iTunes album chart told a similar story, with Mumford’s Sigh No More holding on to the #1 slot, followed by Bieber’s Never Say Never remixes disc, Album of the Year winner the Arcade Fire’s The Suburbs was back in play at #3, proceeded by Grammy performers the Avett Brothers’ I and Love and You at #4, with Best New Artist Esperanza Spalding’s Chamber Music Society climbing to #6. Other Grammy album action included: Lady Antebellum’s Need You Now (#7), Bieber’s My World 2.0 (#8), Eminem’s Recovery (#9), Rihanna’s Loud (#10), Florence and the Machine’s Lungs (#11), Bieber’s My Worlds Acoustic (#12), the 2011 Grammy Nominees compilation (#14), as well as albums by the Black Keys (#17), Muse (#19), Bruno Mars (#21) and Spalding’s 2009 Esperanza release (#28). Lady Gaga Talks Grammy ‘Vessel,’ Born This Way Details

Mother Monster teases in a radio interview that ‘Born This Way’ is ‘just the beginning of this album.’ By Jocelyn Vena Lady gaga arrives at the 2011 Grammys on Sunday Photo: MTV News Lady Gaga called in to Ryan Seacrest’s radio show on Tuesday morning (February 15) and opened up about the “Born This Way” “roller coaster” she finds herself on these days. She also talked about that now-famous egg-like “vessel” in which she arrived to the Grammys on Sunday. “Only I would pull up to an awards show in a giant industrial-sized truck,” she explained about the vehicle that brought her and her unusual container to the big event. “I was in [the vessel] for about 72 hours and it was a very creative experience and it was time for me to prepare and really think about the meaning of the song. I really wanted to be born onstage.” Gaga finally emerged from her egg thingy when she took the stage at the Grammys to perform her new single live for the first time. “It was such a magical moment. I can’t even say enough about the joy that I felt singing ‘Born This Way’ on that stage,” she gushed. “We were just so emotional and so excited and I put so much hard work into creating the performance, designing it. I really have spent a tremendous amount of time dancing and working on becoming a better dancer … It’s important to me, if I want to someday be remembered as a great, great artist, I think I have to do what all the greats did — I’ve got to sing and dance live at the same time.” As for her unusual Whitney Houston shout-out during the ceremony, Gaga explains that it was a thank-you a long time in the making. “I can’t tell you how much I listened to her growing up,” she explained. “She was my vocal idol for so many years. I thought of her voice when I wrote [‘Born This Way’], because she’s just such an incredible singer. I sort of planned to thank her a long time ago, at some point. I said, ‘If I ever win a Grammy I’m gonna thank Whitney’ … so I did.” During the chat with Seacrest, Gaga also gave more details about her album, Born This Way , which comes out May 23. “The next single is called ‘Judas,’ ” she confirmed ( Vogue originally reported the news about this track, which was produced by RedOne ). “And that will be out a couple weeks before the album.” As for the LP as a whole, the singer said, “It’s eclectic. I wouldn’t tell everyone to expect lots of the same kind of songs like ‘Born This Way.’ I explore lots of different genres in tandem with dance music and electronic music and industrial music. I have expanded even further in that area, and I’m so very proud of it.” Later on the conversation, Gaga reiterated, “The great news is ‘Born This Way’ is just the beginning of this album. It’s certainly not even the biggest hit on the album. You have to hear the rest of the record. I don’t want to boast about it, because I am humble about what I do, but it’s a great album and I can’t wait to share each and every song with my fans.” Related Photos Lady Gaga’s Grammy Night Lady Gaga Knows How To Make An Entrance Related Artists Lady Gaga

Kelly Clarkson Influenced By Prince, Aretha Franklin, Others For New Album

‘I record my last song on the 25th of this month and then we will be releasing the album!’ singer writes on Facebook. By James Dinh Kelly Clarkson Photo: Billy Ingram/ WireImage It’s been a while since we’ve heard some new music from Kelly Clarkson . But according to the “American Idol” alum, that’s all about to change very soon as she’s one track away from finishing her new album. While the 28-year-old songstress has previously described the project as ” Garbage-meets-pop-meets-Muse ,” the singer has now come forth to reveal that the she’s been influenced by some of music’s greats, including Prince, Tina Turner and Aretha Franklin, for the forthcoming LP. Taking to her Facebook on Monday to keep fans updated about the project, Kelly said that she’s one track away from completing her fifth studio album. “PS: I record my last song on the 25th of this month and then we will be releasing the album!” she wrote. “This album was influenced by Prince, Tina Turner, Sheryl Crow, Radiohead and there’s a little bit of a Country vibe/influence on a couple of songs.” While the big-voiced singer wasn’t part of the Grammys’ all-star tribute to Aretha Franklin on Sunday, Clarkson revealed that one of her favorite tunes from her recent studio sessions was inspired by the Queen of Soul. “Oh and also one of my favorites on the new album is highly influenced by Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder. Eric Hutchinson wrote it … the album is gonna be a great pop record! I can’t wait for y’all to hear it!” she wrote. Although she partnered with acclaimed songwriter Toby Gad for two tracks, the singer tweeted to fans that she did not re-team with pop maestro Dr. Luke (“Since U Been Gone,” “Behind These Hazel Eyes”) this time around. Last October, the pop star participated in an impromptu Twitter Q&A , where she teased details about the new album. Not only has Clarkson recorded two duets for the still-untitled album, but she’s also announced that she’s ready to hit the road again. When we spoke to songwriter Claude Kelly last year, he said they’re working on something different for the new album. “Well, I wrote ‘My Life Would Suck Without You’ for the last album, so we’re trying to take it up a level,” Kelly said. “She’s toured the world with that album. She’s experienced stuff, so whatever she’s going through right now: fun, good, the bad, the ugly — we want to put on that record.” What type of sound are you hoping to hear on Kelly’s new album? Travis Barker Says Solo Album Helped Turn Tragedies ‘Into Strengths’

Give the Drummer Some, his long-in-the-works solo album, is finally due March 15. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Sway Calloway Travis Barker Photo: MTV News NORTH HOLLYWOOD, California — It’s not exactly breaking news to say that Travis Barker has been working on his solo album for a while now ( at least two years , by our count), nor is it much of a stretch to say that, in the time he’s been working on it, a lot has happened in his life, both good and really, really bad. From the plane crash that took the life of longtime friends “Lil'” Chris Baker and Charles “Che” Still in 2008 to the death of collaborator Adam “DJ AM” Goldstein the following year, Barker has been forced to endure more than his fair share of hardships along the way, but through it all, he’s maintained focus on just one goal: finishing that album. And, at long last, he has. On March 15, his Give the Drummer Some album will finally see the light of day, and when MTV News paid Barker a visit in his NoHo studio, he was definitely in the mood to celebrate — in his own, understated way. “It’s a big accomplishment for me,” he told MTV News. “It’s something that’s been in the making for a couple years now, and there’s been lots of bumps in the road along the way.” And, in a lot of ways, the album — which features head-whirling contributions by everyone from Tom Morello, Raekwon and the RZA (on the track “Carry It” ) to the Transplants and Slash (on “Saturday Night”), not to mention Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Game and Swizz Beatz on the proper first single, “Can a Drummer Get Some?” — helped him overcome the loss of his close friends and saved his life too. “I had to transfer those [tragedies] into strengths and just push through,” Barker said. “Once I started coming in here, little by little, making my way into the studio, and I could actually make music again, and I was able to think, be in the studio environment, be productive, that was a big accomplishment, and, you know, from getting out of the hospital and learning how to walk and survive without being on 20 medications and stuff … I never envisioned it being OK again. So it was a big thing for me, and knocking this album out was the number-one priority on my list.” Which is why, when he talks about the album, he does so in relatively hushed tones. It’s been a long voyage getting to this point, but finally, Barker has made it. And he definitely considers himself blessed to have done so. “Everyone on the album is someone I was blessed to come in contact at one point or another in my life,” he said. “That’s a pretty good way to describe how I feel about it too.” What are you expecting from Travis Barker’s album? ‘Justin Bieber: Never Say Never’ Director’s Cut Could Hit Theaters Soon

Jon M. Chu said to be working on version with new footage that may be released in theaters this month. By Eric Ditzian Justin Bieber in “Never Say Never” Photo: Paramount With a running time of one hour and 45 minutes, Justin Bieber’s “Never Say Never” packs in 3-D concert footage, home videos, behind-the-scenes looks, interviews with everyone from Snoop Dogg to the pop star’s vocal coach and extended, slow-motion shots of the 16-year-old shaking out his famous locks. Perhaps, however, you didn’t get your fill of the kid — perhaps your Bieber Fever rages on. In which case, you might be in luck. New York magazine’s Vulture blog reports that Paramount Pictures is making plans for a director’s cut of the film, following its $29.5 million opening this past weekend. Director Jon M. Chu is said to be working on an updated version of the movie, including new live performances, footage of Bieber at the “Never Say Never” premiere and various advance screenings, and potentially scenes shot at the Grammy Awards on Sunday. The studio is reportedly waiting for delivery of the re-cut film before deciding if it will be released in theaters late in February or as part of a special DVD. MTV News’ request for comment to Paramount (which, like MTV News, is owned by Viacom) was not returned as of press time. Box-office grosses for the concert film are likely to decline in the coming weeks, following Bieber fans’ initial pilgrimage to multiplexes during opening weekend, and the re-cut film could dramatically boost its B.O. bottom line. If the new version does hit theaters, it will likely be as a 3-D-only release, as the cost of releasing digital prints is significantly less than printing and shipping film prints. A final decision on a release will be made once Chu finishes the cut after returning from international premieres in London and Paris.
