On Friday morning (February 11), Lady Gaga debuted her highly anticipated new single, “Born This Way,” a funky, fun dance tune about loving yourself for who you are. Akon, who signed Gaga to his Kon Live Distribution label in 2008, opened up about the pop star’s latest dance opus, admitting that he thinks it will finally show off Gaga’s full capacities as a musician and songwriter, and not just a pop ingenue. “I think ‘Born This Way’ is the kind of record that if you are really paying attention you will get the full depth of Gaga as a songwriter. Sometimes the creative image hides the element of her lyrical content,” he told PopEater.com . “That’s why she wanted to give people a better idea of what she was saying outside of her image when she dropped those lyrics.” The track has a clear message: Everyone should be treated equally no matter who they are or what they believe in. “Gaga says a lot of stuff in her records,” Akon added. “But I know these parents and critics are not really listening to her lyrics. I know that for a fact. She’s singing about a lot of adult subject matter. She’s not just making dance records. Unfortunately, people pay more attention to what she is wearing.” The song is the lead single off the album of the same name, which will drop in May. Akon revealed that there are a few more touches that need to be added before they reach their deadline. “We are finishing up the album now,” he said. “She’s about to go back on tour later this year. The accompanying article is an in-depth portrait of the pop star that also reveals some new details about her single, “Born This Way,” set for release on Friday. “I wrote [‘Born This Way’] in 10 f—ing minutes,” she explains in the article. “And it is a completely magical message song. And after I wrote it, the gates just opened, and the songs kept coming. It was like an immaculate conception.” Jonathan Van Meter, who wrote the article for the fashion magazine, heard the track and said that it “at first sounds suspiciously like a Madonna tune and then switches into something that feels a bit like a Bronski Beat hit and then finally transforms into its own thing: a Gaga original. Clearly an homage to the obscure underground disco record ‘I Was Born This Way’; it is an unbelievably great dance song, destined to be the anthem of every gay-pride event for the next 100 years.” In the chat, Gaga said that the album of the same name, out in May, will certainly be a Gaga record with something to say about life and her “little monsters.” “Because as an artist and as a performer, the person that they look up to to create this space of freedom and escapism, I want to give my fans nothing less than the greatest album of the decade,” she said. “I don’t want to give them something trendy. I want to give them the future.” Gaga also revealed the name of the album’s next single, “Judas,” which will blend pop and rock. “There’s a Bruce Springsteen vibe, there’s a Guns N’ Roses moment. It’s the anthemic nature of the melodies and the choruses,” she said. “It is much more vocally up to par with what I’ve always been capable of. Bieber was one of the lucky ones. When he spoke to MTV News in 2009, shortly before he rocketed to pop superstardom, he opened up about transitioning from small-town life to life in a big city like Atlanta, where he moved with his mother after he was discovered by his manager, Scooter Braun, on the Internet. “I grew up in a town of 30,000 people, so moving to Atlanta, there’s like millions of people,” he explained at the time, when he was gearing up to release his debut EP, My World. “And you don’t know anyone [in Atlanta, but] in my town everyone knows everybody. … I didn’t really get to travel before this whole experience, so it’s definitely been great.” At the time, he was also prepping work on his second single, a follow-up to the Web sensation “One Time.” He hoped “One Less Lonely Girl,” now a fan-favorite when he plays live, would send his fans a very special message. “I think it’s important that these girls have something,” he said. “So there can be one less lonely girl.” Bieber was quick to point out that his album wasn’t all feel-good filler. “There are a lot of people, especially young artists, that are just, like, they make songs that are cookie-cutter — everything is perfect — and real-life things aren’t perfect,” he explained. “There’s a song on my album called ‘Down to Earth’ that is just, like, my relationship with my dad and how my mom and dad split up … at a very young age,” he continued. “So there’s just a lot of stuff that they can relate to, and it’s just going to be a lot of fun.” On Friday, Justin Bieber’s 3-D documentary, “Never Say Never,” opens. The film takes a look at how the teen star worked to hit it big.
