Jennifer Lopez’s ‘On The Floor’ Video: Behind The Scenes

‘I got to be wild and crazy, and at the same time I got to be sexy and sweet too,’ new ‘American Idol’ judge tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias Jennifer Lopez on the set of her video for “On the Floor” Photo: MTV News Jennifer Lopez just wants everyone to dance. Over the weekend, J.Lo shot the music video for her new club jam, “On the Floor,” and in it, Lopez and her crew are living by this motto: Just dance. “I play one character where she kind of runs this party, acts like she’s kind of over it, but at the same time loves it and loves this kind of underground kind of party dance culture,” the new “American Idol” judge told MTV News on the set of her video. “So I got to be wild and crazy, and at the same time I got to be sexy and sweet too.” The video and song feature Pitbull, and the rapper revealed he has a certain system when it comes to appearing on this type of dance track. “When you got these big, big house records or club records that are very global, I try to come in on what I was raised on, what I’m a fan of, which is just spitting hard,” he explained. Lady Gaga producer RedOne said of crafting the track, “It’s a global sound. It’s very rhythmic. It has this rhythm. You know J.Lo: She’s this global star with Latin flavor.” Last week, RedOne gushed about working with the pop star. “She’s a dancer. She can sing. I was really amazed, and I had so much fun working with her,” he said. “Her energy and everything about her is a star, and it was natural for me to do what we did.” Lopez said the video mirrors the song’s theme. “Every single lyric is about letting go: Get on the floor and be an animal,” she said. And she explained that while the album is diverse, it’s all really just about one thing. “There’s so many songs on the album I’m excited for people to hear for so many reasons,” she said. “Some of them because they’re just straight-up club bangers, some because of what they have to say, and some because of how they make you groove. They’re all very thematic in the sense that they’re all about love.” What are you expecting from the “On the Floor” video? Let us know in the comments! Lady Gaga Gets ‘Bigger And Bigger’ On Born This Way, RedOne Says

‘She’s growing all the time, from the day I met her,’ producer tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias Lady Gaga Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images It’s only a matter of weeks until Lady Gaga releases the first single from her highly anticipated album Born This Way, due in May . Producer RedOne recently chatted with MTV News about their latest collaboration, saying it shows the next step in the evolution of the girl formerly known as Stefani Germanotta. “She’s growing all the time, from the day I met her,” RedOne said. “Of course, she’s an encyclopedia of music. She listened to all the Bruce Springsteens, all the legends, and she has music in her. But on her personal level, she’s always growing and growing and growing and becoming bigger and bigger, and her vision’s the same thing. She just needed this platform to put all her ideas and learning from what she’s been doing [into one place], and she’s doing her thing.” With work on the album close to complete, this is a very exciting time for Gaga and him. “It feels exciting. It feels very exciting,” he said with a smile on his face. “It’s really exciting, and I hope the world is going to enjoy this as much as we do.” RedOne also dished about the album’s forthcoming single . “It’s so beautiful, and Gaga is very special to all of us — to the world,” he said. “Honestly, the only thing we do is we get into the studio and suddenly magic happens. We never overthink, or we just do what we do. That’s how it all started. With ‘Just Dance,’ we did it in one hour. There was no overthinking. Even though I remember when we did ‘Poker Face,’ people said musically it brought something new to the music and you won’t be able to top it, we went into the studio and we did ‘Bad Romance’ on a bus. “That explains how we do it, so I can’t tell you anything about what’s coming, but that’s what we do. We just get in and do music we love and feel it, and thank God it comes out good.” What are you expecting from Gaga’s new music? Let us know in the comments!

Cage The Elephant Carry Alt-Rock Flag Into 2011

Thank You, Happy Birthday band is one of MTV News’ 11 for ’11 stars to watch. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Sasha Hamrogue Cage the Elephant’s Matthew Shultz Photo: Roger Kisby/ Getty Images Cage the Elephant toured long and hard behind their 2008 self-titled debut, wowing fans on both sides of the Atlantic with their high-intensity live shows, scoring a pair of rock-radio hits and generally learning the ropes from the likes of Silversun Pickups and Stone Temple Pilots, both of whom they toured with. In other words, they earned their success the old-fashioned way, and now they’re ready to take the next step. On Tuesday, they released their second album, Thank You, Happy Birthday — which is equally indebted to both the Pickups (who memorialize the 1990s) and the Pilots (who lived through them) — and they’re already gaining traction with the album’s first single, “Shake Me Down.” MTV News expects 2011 will be a big year for the Bowling Green, Kentucky, quintet, which is why we’ve tapped them as one of our 11 for ’11 stars to watch. Of course, months ago, there was a very real chance that none of this would’ve happened. Weary from nearly three years on the road, the band began work on Birthday, and sessions were proving difficult, to say the least. “We had written like 80 different song ideas, and I feel like we were really trying to write to a particular sound — like, what we thought Cage the Elephant should sound like — and we were pigeonholing ourselves,” frontman Matt Shultz revealed, laughing. “We all started writing songs on our own, and they were really different from what we had written before, so we were like, ‘We should use these for a side project,’ ” he continued. “And after a while, we realized most of the songs we liked were ‘side-project songs,’ [so] we made it our album.” Birthday showcases a fuzzy, rough-hewn side of Cage, which has as much to do with their decision to start fresh as it does with Shultz’s personal struggles — and his newfound love of the Pixies. “At the time, I had just broken up with my girlfriend of five years, and I’d drive around until like 3 or 4 in the morning listening to Doolittle, ” he said with a sigh. “It was my therapy, I guess.” And he carried that therapy into the songs he wrote for the album, which — like all great ’90s alt-rock tunes — delve headlong into themes like heartbreak, loss and alienation, and they do so unapologetically. “It’s not something I think you should try to hide, and especially don’t try to change your behavior,” Shultz said. “You don’t want to end up like some people, where their lives have been torn to shreds and they’re, like, smeared in the press. I’d rather people know everything that’s terrible about me than hide all the terrible things and have them come out.” So, with Birthday behind them, Cage the Elephant are pushing forward. They’ll open a few dates for the Black Keys, then begin a headlining tour of their own next month. And like all the thrift-store Titans that went before them (seriously, if you’re jonesing for an alt-rock fix, Thank You, Happy Birthday is the album for you), they’re doing it all their way, mostly by the seat of their pants. After all, they’ve sort of earned that right. “We try not to concern ourselves too much with strategic plans and all that,” Shultz said, laughing. “We’ll see what happens.” Check out MTV News’ 11 for ’11 — actors, musicians and TV stars who are about to have a huge year — all week long. Swizz Beatz Says Jay-Z And Kanye West’s ‘H.A.M.’ Is ‘Super Positive’

‘I think that if more of the industry did moves like this it would be a better place for everybody,’ producer tells MTV News. By Mawuse Ziegbe Swizz Beatz Photo: MTV News When Kanye West and Jay-Z dished out “H.A.M.”, the first official single from their forthcoming joint album Watch the Throne, it was a colossal hip-hop moment. Two of the rap’s reigning mic-rippers tag-teaming on a track heaping with bravado-laden lyricism over producer Lex Luger’s incessant, piercing drums is a major way to star to start the hip-hop conversation in 2011. Swizz Beatz, who’s crafted multiple records with both MCs, told MTV News on Wednesday (January 12) that Yeezy and Hov’s collaborative effort could be taken as a blueprint for how to push the hip-hop game further. “I think that those being both of my friends, and knowing that people can team up on such a high caliber level — as musicians, as rappers, as friends, as peers — I think it’s super-positive, and I think that if more of the industry did moves like this it would be a better place for everybody,” Swizz said. The Monster Mondays songsmith has been in the lab with the hip-hop titans as they craft Throne, and added that the tracks that in the works definitely game-changing potential. “I’m involved a little bit on the album, and just hearing the different songs it’s like ‘Wow, they’re really taking it to another level.’ I’m happy to be a part of it, those are my brothers and [they’re] going to continue pushing the envelope,” he said. Swizz also insisted Jay and ‘Ye are “definitely coming with the monsters,” and that “H.A.M.” will be followed up by tracks that are “just gonna keep getting better.” However, the prolific producer mused that the two MCs don’t have an specific agenda for Throne’s chart performance — since they’ve both got boatloads of accolades, fame and radio hits to their names — but are rather hitting the studio to create the tracks they feel like making. “I think they’re just doing them. I don’t think artists nowadays are paying attention to any like, particular formats. Because the industry is not what it used to be — you can’t predict a Top 40 record or a #1 Urban record. You just gotta just do what you feel is hot. It’s just like you feel like you don’t want to rap no more [or] you wanna keep going past the hook, just keep going past the hook. That makes it real hip-hop.” he said. “People don’t understand that hip-hop got started from being rebellious to any rules. Hip-hop has no rules, and the only reason hip-hop started getting rules [was] because of radio airplay, sales, different spins and trying to reach out to another audience. But Jay and Kanye got the audience already so they can do what they want to do, and I think that’s what they doing, which is a great move.” Like his homies, Swizz is also making some high-profile joint moves, collaborating with Reebok and luxury car maker Aston Martin. The producer/rapper has also been tinkering on his next solo effort, titled Haute Living, which he said will be a creative departure from his previous work. “I think people are not gonna expect what they’re gonna hear on my album. I’m very hard on myself with the album because it’s like putting on another hat and it’s opening up the door for a lot of criticism,” he said of heading back to the mic for the follow-up to 2007’s One Man Band Man. Ultimately, he shrugged off any possible Haute hate, and maintained that, like Jay and Kanye, he’s in it to make music and have a good time. “Doing this album I said, ‘Look, I’m not trying to be the best rapper in the world, I’m not trying to do none of that. I’m just trying to have fun and treat it as [an] art project where I’m expressing myself.’ ” While he may be prioritizing creativity over commercial viability, Swizz hasn’t been slacking on securing a diverse lineup of A-list features that includes a rock star, a Rebirth rapper and R&B royalty. “I have amazing collaborations on the album from Lenny Kravitz, Wayne, my sister Mary [J. Blige], Maxwell is on the album,” he said. “I don’t want to give it all away but I’m trying to come with something … that’s just gonna like blow people’s minds away. They gonna be like, ‘Wow.’ ” Do you agree with Swizz’ thoughts about Jay and Kanye’s “H.A.M.” record? Let us know in the comments!
