Are Kanye And Jay-Z Delivering Watch The Throne Too Soon?

Critics weigh in on whether ‘Ye risks fans gorging on product while they’re still feasting on acclaimed Dark Twisted Fantasy. By Jayson Rodriguez Kanye West Photo: Jean Baptiste Lacroix/ WireImage Kanye West should be basking in the critical acclaim of his My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy album. He scored a number of year-end accolades for the project, including recognition from us here at MTV News. But a mere two months after the LP’s November release, the rapper’s already in promotional mode for his next project, Watch the Throne, a joint effort with Jay-Z . How did everything happen so fast? Jay-Z, of course, has been a prolific MC, having released six consecutive #1 albums, from 1998’s Vol. 2 … Hard Knock Life to 2003’s The Black Album. And after a self-imposed exile, Kanye has proved to be just as productive as his mentor, including West’s three-month-long G.O.O.D. Fridays series, during which he released a new single each week. Back in October, during a lengthy sit-down, West casually told MTV News’ Sway that the Watch the Throne EP had evolved into a full-length album. “We putting out a whole album now,” he said. “We had done five [songs] so far, but then a few of them kind of were out there, and I put them on my album. Sorry, Jay. But we got some more, and we’re going to the South of France at the end of the month to just record new ideas. But we’ll probably be done with the album in a day.” According to ‘Ye, Jay-Z only has to write 10 verses (a hint?: the album will only be 10 songs), and West is collaborating with a bevy of producers, so his load will be substantially reduced as well. Another question, however, is whether fans will flock to the project so soon after snapping up West’s extravagant solo release. The early answer seems to be a resounding yes. “I think it’s smart because I imagine the two albums will be very different sonically, so it won’t be a case where one overshadows the other,” Complex senior editor Toshitaka Kondo told MTV News. “Also, when an artist is hot, their fans can’t get enough as long as the output is good. Young Money has had five or six different releases, including the Young Money album and projects from Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj and Drake in the last 13 months, and I can’t see how it’s hurt any of them. I can’t see the sales of this album necessarily cannibalizing the sales from Kanye’s [last album] anyway. It’d be one thing if they were dropping within a few weeks of each other, but given how fast people consume music these days, six months is plenty of time.” Perhaps, though, instead of debating whether it’s too soon to put out the album, the more poignant thing to consider is this: arguably the two biggest stars in hip-hop want to make an album together ! “All artists need to find a way to combat falling record sales and meet fans’ desire for constant gratification — a new album from two of hip-hop’s biggest stars isn’t going to hurt,” the Amplifier ‘s Caryn Ganz said. “It could even renew interest in Kanye’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and encourage people to revisit it,” she said. “All the recent collaborations between these two have been very strong, like ‘Run This Town’ and ‘Monster,’ and Kanye seems to bring out a fascinating artiness in Jay. They just have to be careful that they don’t push it too far in an artsy, esoteric direction and lose their whole street base. But the timing doesn’t seem strange to me at all — strike while Kanye’s still making headlines for the right reasons, rather than wrong.” Do you think it’s too soon for Kanye and Jay to drop their Watch the Throne ? Paramore Move On, In A Small Town That Doesn’t

Bigger Than the Sound goes behind the scenes in Tennessee; see more in ‘Paramore: The Last Word,’ live on Friday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com. By James Montgomery Paramore Photo: MTV News Franklin, Tennessee, is not exactly the kind of place you find yourself visiting twice within the span of 14 months (unless you really love chili cook-offs ), and yet, I did. In September 2009, I flew down there to spend the day with Paramore , who were on the verge of releasing their Brand New Eyes album and were, as I put it, poised to become “the Kings and Queen of the South.” That probably didn’t happen, but boy, did I believe it at the time. The band — reinvigorated by the resolution of the internal conflicts that had plagued them (resolutions that make up the very core of the album) — seemed happy, laughing and joking with one another as we ate lunch at Puckett’s Grocery , rode bikes up to the local Goodwill, and hung around frontwoman Hayley Williams’ house . It really seemed like they were primed to take over the planet. Or at least healthy enough to try. Last week, I went back to Franklin, once again to speak with Paramore. I stayed at the same hotel, drove my rental car down the same rolling country roads, even ate lunch at Puckett’s (you get the feeling this is the kind of town where not much ever changes), but the circumstances surrounding my trip were completely different. The planet had not been conquered, and the healing promise of Brand New Eyes seemed a distant memory. It was days after the band had announced their split with founding members Josh and Zac Farro , and the remaining members reached out to me to discuss the entire incident, for the first and, I was told, last time. And while we’ll go in-depth on my interview with the band during MTV News’ “Paramore: The Last Word” live stream (Friday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com), it’s important to know the rather incredible backstory that went into making it happen — and just how different everything was when I arrived in town. This was, after all, an interview that came together in three days, beginning with an e-mail from the label on December 27 (when New York still resembled Hoth), followed by an improbable, last-minute flight to Nashville on the 29th (while lines of stranded travelers hoped against hope to get anywhere ) and culminating in a no-holds-barred, everything-on-the-table sit down in Williams’ basement on the 30th. When I was told that the band wanted to address the issue before the end of 2010, it wasn’t just hyperbole. They couldn’t wait to turn the page, put all of this behind them and start fresh in the New Year. And as I drove to that interview — playing Brand New Eyes in the rental car — I was struck immediately by just how much the album had changed for me. Originally, I had interpreted its kiss-off missives as being about nameless naysayers and faceless detractors, but now, knowing everything that had happened, it became clear to me that Eyes is almost entirely about the conflict between Williams and Josh Farro. Lines like, “It has to be so lonely/ To be the only one who’s holy,” and, “Where’s your gavel, your jury/ What’s my offense this time?” were blow-by-blow accounts of the struggle between the lead singer and the lead guitarist, who not only wrote the majority of the album, but also dated each other. This was real, palpable vitriol … the stuff that, ultimately, led to the Farros leaving the band. When I arrived at Williams’ house, I was determined to ask her about those lyrics, and, to her credit, she didn’t deny that any of them were about Farro. She didn’t deny anything, really — the hurt feelings, the frustration, the confusion — and neither did bandmates Taylor York and Jeremy Davis. In fact, aside from how much their entire situation had deteriorated, Paramore’s honesty was the thing that impressed me the most. They answered all of Farro’s charges , and there wasn’t a single topic that was off limits. Sure, there was a sadness in the room, a genuine sense of heartbreak, because you got the feeling that the three actually believed that Brand New Eyes had healed them, but they put on a brave face, not for themselves (as they told me repeatedly), but for their fans. We spoke for nearly an hour, said our goodbyes, and I headed to the airport. On the plane back to New York, I kept thinking about how I had taken this same exact flight a year ago, and how different things had become. You don’t have to be in a band to understand why this happened. The same dynamic applies to any group of friends, especially when one is singled out and given the lion’s share of the attention. Feelings are hurt. Things are said. Most of the time, they can’t be unsaid, and the story ends much like it has with Paramore. It’s a shame, but it’s also life. Only, Paramore are adamant that the story doesn’t end here. They are pressing on, planning big things (which you’ll hear about in the live stream) and determined not to let their fans down. They recognize all the bad that has happened, but change is not necessarily a bad thing. Of course, I found it ironic that they were talking about it in a place that seems practically change-proof, but perhaps that’s the point: Franklin may stay forever the same, but Paramore will not. And maybe I’ll be making another trip down to Tennessee this year, to marvel at just how different things have become. Once again. MTV News will be unveiling our exclusive interview with Paramore on Friday at 4 p.m. ET with “Paramore: The Last Word,” a live stream on MTV.com that will feature in-depth analysis of the band’s future, real-time discussion with their biggest fans and exclusive footage of the band, past and present. Rihanna And Matt Kemp Break Up

Source cites Rihanna’s busy schedule as a cause for the split. By Jocelyn Vena Rihanna and Matt Kemp Photo: Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images Rihanna and Matt Kemp kicked off 2010 as a couple, but it seems they are bidding the year farewell apart. According to Us Weekly, the singer and her baseball-player beau have split. “It happened over the last few weeks,” a source told the magazine. “She basically was just over it.” The insider added that the pop star has been “so busy” with work that “he just can’t keep up with her crazy travel schedule.” The duo started dating in January and couldn’t keep their relationship under wraps for long, but apparently Kemp got tired of dating a woman with a jet-setting lifestyle. “Matt’s sick of always following after her like a puppy dog all over the world. He wants something more normal,” the source explained. “It was never as serious as it looked. It was always just [about] having fun.” Shortly after they began dating, Kemp threw Rihanna a birthday party in February. In June, Rihanna opened up about the L.A. Dodger to Elle magazine: “I have a boyfriend. I’m so happy. I feel really comfortable, and it’s so easy. I have such a chaotic life, but at the end of the day, that is just my peace. It keeps me sane, really, talking to him and talking to my family.” In November, when she released her latest album, Loud, Rihanna said that her athlete boyfriend enjoyed hearing her softer side on the record. “He really likes, actually, the ballads on the album. Those are his favorite ones,” she said. “I always play him songs when I finish them. I’ll bring them back home and ask him what he thinks. At the end of the day, we still disagree on some things, but for the most part … he loves everything on the album. … ‘Who’s That Chick,’ he doesn’t really like that one. I guess it’s too lightweight pop for him.” Related Artists Rihanna

Lady Gaga To Make Born This Way Announcement New Year’s Eve

‘My gift to you is a BORN THIS WAY announcement Midnight on NEW YEARS EVE,’ she writes in a Christmas tweet. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga Photo: Michael Caulfield/ Getty Images Lady Gaga is kicking 2011 off with a bang. The singer shared with her little monsters that, come New Year’s Eve, she will have a special announcement for her loyal fans about her upcoming album, Born This Way. She tweeted over the weekend: “Merry Christmas little monsters! I love you with all my heart. My gift to you is a BORN THIS WAY announcement Midnight on NEW YEARS EVE. -MM.” The Mother Monster didn’t reveal anything else about the announcement but did react to a fan-made video sending Christmas love to the superstar. “This is so darling!” she wrote . “You make me so happy, Im sending you monster kisses!” Gaga had always planned to end 2010 on a high note. She shared with Rolling Stone back in June that she had every intention of making an announcement on New Year’s Eve, even if what she had planned to announce was pre-empted. “I think I’m gonna get the album title tattooed on me and put out the photo,” she said of her plans six months ago. “I’ve been working on it for months now, and I feel very strongly that it’s finished right now. It came so quickly. Some artists take years; I don’t. I write music every day.” Since she already revealed her album title at the VMAs , what she plans to announce on New Year’s Eve is a mystery, but we’re sure her fans are counting down the moments. Gaga recently shared that the album will be her “most innovative.” A single is expected in February , and the album will follow shortly thereafter. “[The album is] a marriage of electronic music with major, epic, dare I even say, metal or rock and roll, pop, anthemic style melodies with really sledge-hammering dance beats,” Gaga said. “I think that lyrically this album is more poetic … It’s really written by the fans, they really wrote it for me because every night they’re funneling so much into me. So I wrote it for them. Born This Way is all about my little monsters and me, mother monster.” What do you think Gaga will unveil on New Year’s Eve? Share your guesses in the comments! Keri Hilson Says Chris Brown Is Back In ‘Good Graces’

Her just-released No Boys Allowed features Brown, who completed a yearlong domestic violence course. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Keri Hilson Photo: MTV News Keri Hilson’s new album may be titled No Boys Allowed , but as she told MTV News recently, men are definitely allowed on the project. A cursory glance of the track list reveals Rick Ross, Nelly, J.Cole, Kanye West and Timbaland as guest artists. Also included on the set, on the steamy duet “One Night Stand,” is Chris Brown. Hilson has been a staunch supporter of the embattled singer: Brown appeared in the “Slow Dance” video from her previous LP, and the two shared a laugh over a lap dance the “Deuces” star gave Hilson in a promo clip for her album. “People are already putting [Brown] back in their good graces ’cause they see his remorse,” Hilson told MTV News. “And I know people are saying, ‘Is he really a man? You have him on your album.’ I mean, yeah. To me, a man is someone, you don’t go backwards in life. You learn from your mistakes, and you don’t do it again. You show remorse, and you move on. You move forward onto bigger and better things. That’s a man trait.” Earlier this week, Brown completed a yearlong domestic violence course after pleading guilty to assaulting Rihanna, his girlfriend at the time. Brown posted a picture of his certificate on his Twitter page and shared a sentiment with his fans regarding the process. “I have enough self-respect and decency to be proud of accomplishing this DV class,” Brown wrote. “Boyz run from their mistakes. Men learn from them!!! thx.” Related Videos Behind-The-Scenes With Keri Hilson
