‘American Idol’ Preview: Scotty McCreery, Casey Abrams Get Current

For 21st Century Night, some of the contestants will be dragged into modern music. By Eric Ditzian Scotty McCreery performs on “American Idol” Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Fox “American Idol” has been mired in the past for weeks, trudging from Motown tunes to Elton John cuts to rock and roll classics. Wednesday night’s (April 20) theme, however, will drag the reality show kicking and screaming into the present. Welcome to 21st Century Night on “Idol.” Yet as we enter this new century and hope to learn something of what the contestants might sound like outside the forced theatrics of the “Idol” bubble, we must pause briefly to remember Paul McDonald . He may not have been comfortable belting out covers week after week. He perhaps has been as invested in his new gal pal, “Twilight” star Nikki Reed , as in actually being crowned “Idol” champ. But let’s give credit where it’s due: The guy’s no hipster doofus, but a genuine artist with one of the most unique vocal tones we’ve ever seen on the show. His rendition of Rod Stewart’s “Maggie May” remains one of the most memorable of the season. Alas, Paul’s now gone, and surely none of the remaining seven singers wants to follow him out the door. Here’s what we’ll be looking for them to deliver when the show goes live. And like last week, we’ve asked Jim Cantiello — whose “Idol Party Live” hits MTV.com on Thursday at noon ET — to add in his own song picks. Casey Abrams While we remain unconvinced Casey is some pop-jazz guru on the level of Adele and Michael Bubl

Laurieann Gibson Says ‘The Dance Scene’ Is Not Just A Dance Show

Lady Gaga’s creative director says her E! series shows ‘the evolution of a dream.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Vanessa WhiteWolf Laurieann Gibson Photo: MTV News Laurieann Gibson is a creative director and choreographer whose client list includes names like Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Natalia Kills, Nicki Minaj, Diddy (and Dirty Money), Alicia Keys and Keri Hilson, to name only a few. She’s already had a movie based on her life (Jessica Alba played a Laurieann-like character in “Honey”) and appeared on various TV shows like “So You Think You Can Dance,” “Making the Band,” “Skating With the Stars.” And, of course, she was a Fly Girl alongside J.Lo on “In Living Color.” What’s left on her to-do list? Well, next she’ll be providing a peek into the world of dancing on her new E! show, “The Dance Scene,” which premieres Sunday at 10:30 p.m. ET. ” ‘The Dance Scene’ is basically the most amazing dance show in the world,” she humbly told MTV News. “And it follows me as a creative director. You see how I maintain that creativity.” The show follows Laurieann and her team of dancers and choreographers at Boom Kack studios as they audition, rehearse, choreograph and perform visuals for major events, such as “VH1 Divas Salute the Troops” and music videos. It also gives an inside look at the personal lives of the dancers and their ever-present struggle to balance work and life while living up to Gibson’s very high expectations. With her high-profile clients and a truly competitive spirit, Gibson said she really wasn’t nervous about having the cameras following her around for the show. “I wasn’t hesitant because I’m built out of a truthful place,” she said. “The only thing that I have is the truth, so the only thing I fear is a lie. I wasn’t afraid of being truthful, and I just want them to know how great they can be, and I wanted to lift the veil.” So, what should we expect from the show’s first episode? “Sunday’s premiere is quite exciting,” Gibson teased. “I saw the premiere, and I cried. I cried ’cause I was so grateful that [executive producer] Ryan [Seacrest] was not afraid to show me in all of a positive … all of the power that my gift has, and no one’s ever been brave enough to be like, ‘Yes, you are capable.’ And he just let it be, so I just cried. “And we’re at the opening of ‘Divas Live’ with four divas [including Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry and Keri Hilson],” she continued. “It’s just everything that’s going to happen on this season: It’s power packed; it’s an incredible show. It’s not just another corny dance show. It isn’t. It’s not even really a dance show. It’s the life of a dancer and the transition and the evolution of a dream.”

Epitome Of A Bad Father: Dad Inks Three-Year-Old Son With ‘Daddy’s Boy’ Tattoo

What kind of animal could do something so selfish to a precious, innocent child??? A Georgia man was let off with a slap on the wrist after pleading guilty to tattooing his 3-year-old son. A judge in Floyd County, Ga., ruled on Monday that Eugene Ashley must pay $300 and serve 12 months probation for giving his son a tattoo on his shoulder that said “DB” – short for “Daddy’s Boy” – in 2009. Ashley was arrested about a year later after an official from the Department of Child Services visited his house and spotted the tatted up tyke, the Rome News-Tribune newspaper reported. It’s illegal in Georgia to give a tattoo to someone younger than 18. Prosecutors called the crime “egregious,” but said that it would have been difficult to prosecute because it would rely solely on the toddler’s testimony. “I don’t know if we would be able to elicit a testimony from a child,” Patterson told the paper. Ashley said he was drunk and didn’t remember giving the toddler the tattoo, Georgia’s WSBTV television reported. The boy was taken into custody by child services and is now living with his uncle. The uncle, George Hawkins, said that the boy remembered the tattoo and recalled that it hurt “a little bit,” the station reported. SMH at this a*shole being too drunk to remember giving the tattoo… that means you were too drunk to be watching a child!!! We can’t believe they only fined him $300 dollars. Poor lil precious baby. Swizzy’s Ex-Wife Continues To Show Support For BabyMama Number Three

Aw how sweet… Mashonda took to Twitter yesterday to let folks know it was Mother’s Day in the UK and sent her goodwill wishes to ex-hubby/adulterer Swizz Beatz’s jumpoff who is not Alicia Keys — Jahna Sebastian, the mother of his little daughter. So… is Mashonda showing her maturity by wishing Swizzy’s former mistress well? Or was this just a great excuse to remind Alicia Keys (and the rest of the world) of Swizz’s Dirty Dog ways??? The “Love & Hip-Hop” star previously said she is able to have a relationship/friendship with Sebastian because she was just a young girl who wasn’t aware of Swizz’s family… unlike that other trifling homewrecker.

Jennifer Hudson Says R. Kelly, Alicia Keys ‘Gave Me My Sound’ For I Remember Me

Singer calls Kelly’s ability to channel her ‘kind of creepy.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Christina Garibaldi Jennifer Hudson Photo: MTV News On Tuesday, Jennifer Hudson drops her new album, I Remember Me , and it seems the artists she worked with on the record also remembered her. For the release, she hooked up with Alicia Keys and R. Kelly, who seemed to channel the singer perfectly — almost too perfectly. “R. Kelly was writing for me at the time, and I didn’t even know it, and they just sent me this song,” she recalled to MTV News about the track “Where You At.” “You don’t want to get your hopes up too high of being able to work with someone like R. Kelly, and when they sent the song, they told me, ‘Kelly put up a shrine of pictures of you to channel you, and he created this song.’ ” Whatever he was doing seemed to really work, as Hudson explained: “It was kind of creepy to me, because when I heard the song, I was like, ‘Oh my god! … He’s, like, giving me me! This is what I would do! This is something I would say.’ And I hadn’t even met him until after … and I’m like, ‘This is bizarre.’ ” Crediting Kelly and Keys, Hudson notes that “they gave me my sound.” And it seems whatever otherworldly bond she had with Kelly, she had a more-grounded one with Keys, with whom she worked on the songs “Angel,” “Everybody Needs Love” and “Don’t Look Down.” “I must say that working with Alicia was my favorite sessions in the recording studio ever, and I think it was partly because … it was a learning experience,” she said about Keys, who gave birth days after their sessions. “She’s just amazing to work with. We had such a good time together. … It was an amazing, fun experience.” Which I Remember Me collaboration are you most looking forward to hearing? Tell us in the comments below!
