Kris Allen Was ‘Pretty Upset’ About Shirtless Photos

‘American Idol’ winner tells MTV News he was embarrassed by shots showing his ‘pasty’ body. By Jim Cantiello Kris Allen Photo: MTV News When shirtless vacation photos of Kris Allen recently landed him on the pages of TMZ , the modest “American Idol” season-eight winner was baffled that people would want to see what was hiding underneath his plaid shirts. “I was pretty upset. It was like, ‘Seriously?’ ” a visibly embarrassed Allen told MTV News during a recent New York tour stop. The revealing pics were snapped in April when Kris and his band were hanging out at the pool before a Paradise Island gig in the Bahamas. “I knew it was probably going to happen. We’re in Atlantis, which is not the most secret place in the world. And we were trying to have a good time. People weren’t bothering us, but apparently they were taking sneaky pictures and selling them to the tabloids,” Allen said before joking, “I don’t know what they got off them, but I would like a cut.” Kris wasn’t the only one caught in the paparazzo’s crossfire. One photo showed the singer with his younger brother Daniel and guitarist/keyboardist Cale Mills. “That made me feel better because I was like, ‘Cale, you’re in here too, buddy. I’m not by myself,’ ” Allen said, happy to deflect some of the attention from his own “pasty” body. “I’m so glad I didn’t make those photos,” Kris’ drummer, Ryland Steen, chimed in. “I think just my elbow was in one of them.” Pasty or not, Kris’ band wasn’t so surprised that the bashful singer’s physique ended up being discussed and praised by radio DJs and on gossip sites. “He’s a hunky guy,” admitted Steen. “As soon as we heard about it we went and tried to find [the photos],” Mills said. “You know how Google will give you suggestions? If you type in ‘Kris Allen’ and hit a space, ‘shirtless’ pops up. And we were like, ‘Well, I’m guessing people have been looking for that before,” he laughed. Although the Arkansas native garnered a lot of attention for showing a little skin, Kris isn’t interested in pushing the beefcake angle in order to get more headlines. “[The tabloid scene’s] not my thing, man. Although maybe it should be,” the laid-back singer quipped. Kris’ bandmates have another idea. Drummer Steen announced, “Instead of doing our version of [Kanye West’s] ‘Heartless,’ it’s going to be ‘How could you be so shirtless’ from now on.” What do you think of Kris’ accidental photo shoot? Kris Allen Aims For ‘Street Cred’ On Tour With Radiohead Cover

After ‘Paranoid Android,’ the ‘American Idol’ alum is working on a cover of MGMT’s ‘Electric Feel.’ By Jim Cantiello Kris Allen Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images While you should never judge a book by its cover, “American Idol” season-eight champ Kris Allen hopes concertgoers judge him for his cover. More specifically, his out-of-left-field take on Radiohead’s epic prog-rocky anthem “Paranoid Android,” which he’s currently performing on his first headlining tour. “It’s our street-cred song,” Allen told MTV News backstage at Yankee Stadium, where he was about to play the CBS Radio Expo. “I’ve always loved the song, and I’ve always loved playing it, and so we worked it out as a band, because we thought it would be cool.” Street cred is a tricky thing when you’re a dude from a show that forces contestants to sing songs from the Barry Manilow songbook. But Kris and his band are eager to prove to audiences that their music tastes reach wider than the mainstream tunes fans might expect from an artist with an “Idol” past. And, in some cases, the Radiohead cover — now a fan favorite — expands the musical horizons of Allen’s “Idol” followers. “Some people come up to me after the show, they didn’t even know the song, and they were like, ‘That was incredible!’ My brother, he has no idea who Radiohead is, and he thought it was awesome,” Allen said. Not all audiences are ready, however, to hear the good-natured Southern boy sing lyrics like “When I am king, you will be first against the wall.” “We won’t play it every night. We’ll play it every once in a while,” the Arkansas native said. “I think we played it in Shreveport [Louisiana], and people were just like, ‘What is this? This guy’s creepy!’ And then we move on to the next song,” Allen laughed. This isn’t the first time Kris has taken a risk with his set list. In addition to rocking songs from his self-titled debut album, including the hit “Live Like We’re Dying,” Kris and the band have performed straight-faced, sincere mash-ups of Kanye West’s “Heartless” and Coolio’s “Gangsta’s Paradise,” as well as a “Falling Slowly”/ “With or Without You” interpolation that caught the eye of original artist the Swell Season. (Glen Hansard even performed Kris’ U2-ified arrangement on their last tour). Kris Allen has his fingers crossed for a similar shout-out from Radiohead. “What if Thom Yorke sees this?” the singer said wide-eyed. “And what if he’s like, ‘This is great’? That would be incredible!” While Kris and his band daydream about props from the Radiohead frontman, they’re busy working on another cred-grabbing cover to add to their set. “We’ve been trying to work up ‘Electric Feel’ for a while, the MGMT song, which would be pretty cool.” Kris Allen is on tour with his band through September, performing both headlining shows as well as opening for Barenaked Ladies, Keith Urban and Maroon 5. Gulf Coast Oil Disaster: Tropical Storm Could Mean Two-Week Halt to Oil Recovery | Video

Tropical storm, oil slick equal more fear, uncertainty By the CNN Wire Staff June 26, 2010 2:34 p.m. EDT New Orleans, Louisiana (CNN) — As much as 2.5 million gallons of oil could flow into the Gulf of Mexico for two weeks if Tropical Storm Alex forces a work stoppage at the ruptured BP well. Adm. Thad Allen, the government's disaster response manager, said Saturday that gale-force winds near the well head would prompt an evacuation of the thousands of workers and vessels involved in the oil recovery and cleanup effort. It would take 14 days to put everything back in place, Allen said. That means the containment cap would be off for that period, allowing oil to flow freely. Researchers have estimated that between 35,000 barrels — about 1.5 million gallons — and 60,000 barrels — about 2.5 million gallons — of oil are gushing into the ocean every day. Anxiety levels rose Saturday as Alex churned toward Mexico with a potential for hurricane force winds in the coming days. The storm is not on track to directly pass over oil-affected areas but forecasters have not ruled out an easterly shift in Alex's path. “We all know the weather is unpredictable, and we could have a sudden last-minute change,” Allen said. Alex — the first named storm of what is expected to be a fierce Atlantic hurricane season — formed in the Caribbean on Saturday and had maximum sustained winds of 45 mph. It was heading toward Belize and Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. Allen said it would take five days to evacuate more than 38,000 people and 6,000 vessels that are involved in the oil response as well as the two rigs that are collecting about 24,500 barrels of oil a day from the well, Allen said. He told CNN there is “no playbook” when it comes to responding to a massive oil spill as a storm brews. “But I will tell you there's been an extraordinary amount of planning being done,” he said. BP plans to place a third rig called the Helix Producer at the well site next week, which will increase the amount of oil being captured to 53,000 barrels a day, Allen said. That, too, could be disrupted if Alex affects the area. Gulf Coast residents feared that high winds and storm surges could spread the slick and push more oil ashore into bays, estuaries and pristine beaches, exacerbating the oil disaster triggered by BP's ruptured well. “The greatest nightmare with this storm approaching is that it takes this oil on the surface of the Gulf and blows it over the barrier islands into the bays and the estuaries,” Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Florida, told CNN. “And that is where you really get the enormous destruction, because it's just very difficult to clean up those pristine bays.” Americans took to beaches Saturday to protest offshore oil drilling. They held hands and formed lines in the sand. “I believe Americans need to stand together and take our energy future back from the grip of the oil industry,” said Dave Rauschkolb, a restaurant owner from Seaside, Florida, who founded Hands Across the Sand. Deepwater drilling could resume by the end of July after U.S. District Judge Martin Feldman in New Orleans, Louisiana, on Thursday denied a request to keep a six-month moratorium imposed by President Barack Obama on May 27 in place, pending a government appeal. The government has 30 days to show it is beginning to comply with Feldman's order and start issuing permits. The appeals process can continue, but until the appeal, the government must act as if Feldman's order will be upheld. While protesters lined the sand, Alex moved toward Mexico, no one knowing whether it would make a sudden turn north into the open Gulf. Meteorologist Karen Maginnis said the “preferred scenario” actually would be for Alex to head to northern Florida. That's because the oil spill has been gradually rotating counterclockwise. If the storm heads to the east of it, it would send the oil farther out to sea. If the storm heads more directly towards the central Gulf and Louisiana, it might push the oil toward Florida. “We've never been in this situation before,” Maginnis said. “We've never seen an oil spill that encompassed the Gulf like this, end up so close to shore.” A powerful storm would also complicate efforts to clean up miles of coastline. “It's going to mean we're going to have to find a way to maneuver all our resources, change things,” said Grover Robinson, chairman of the Escambia County Commission in Pensacola, Florida. “We won't be able to fight the oil for a couple of days. And we have no idea about winds and current and what it will do to the oil in the gulf. So obviously, it's a very big concern for us.” Allen said he and some top Obama administration officials, including Vice President Joe Biden, will be headed back to the Gulf region next week to assess the oil relief efforts. But in a new blow to fishermen, Mississippi officials announced that waters east of the Gulfport shipping channel would be closed to shrimping, because of oil sighted in the area. In one Vietnamese fishing community in Biloxi, the oil spill has been devastating. Jennifer Le said her father has known nothing but shrimping since coming to America. He doesn't know how he would succeed in any other career and his checks from BP have not been enough. “I mean, everything was based on the waters and now it's just, it's just gone,” Le said. Aside from state closures, the federal government has banned fishing in 78,597 square miles of the Gulf, which is about 32.5 percent of of federal waters. Like Le, many oil-affected residents face an ominous future. But this week, there was some promising news for potentially tens of thousands of people seeking claims against BP. Kenneth Feinberg, who is administering the $20 billion compensation fund set up by BP under White House prodding, says that people who work in support of oil rigs will be able to file claims — and not just fishermen and businesses along the coast. Employees of businesses that brings tools to oil rigs, for example, also would be able to file a claim. The company previously agreed to set aside the $20 billion in an escrow account for spill-related costs, a sum that does not cover fees and penalties that could be imposed by the federal government. BP had resisted approving claims by people who said they were affected by the moratorium on oil drilling, saying it was imposed by the Obama administration. But Feinberg said BP and the administration now have agreed those claims will be covered. “I now have discovered — I didn't realize this until yesterday, but the moratorium claims will fall under my jurisdiction,” he told CNN. To date, almost 74,000 claims have been filed and more than 39,000 payments have been made, totaling almost $126 million, according to the company. CNN's Brandon Miller, T.J. Holmes and Moni Basu contributed to this report. added by: EthicalVegan

-Phil Jackson just told Doris Burke that they’re “talking” to Kobe Bryant about dribbling too much. He should have said “pleading.” -Mark Jackson believes Kobe Bryant will step up because he’s played with a lot of great players, and great players get it done. Excuse me sir. The best players you played with are Patrick Ewing and Reggie Miller. Kobe Bryant is better.

Kobe’s the Best Right Now, but Not Ever

Filed under: Celtics , Lakers , NBA Playoffs , NBA Finals LOS ANGELES — OK, so he isn’t Michael, and try as he might for the rest of his career, he’ll never be Magic, either. Still, Kobe being Kobe is great enough. Kobe Bryant is great, by the way, even though he spent most of Thursday night inside Staples Center operating as if he were dribbling with one hand on the ball and the other around his throat. Which brings us to a problem for Bryant, especially since his admirable yet unreachable goal is to rise higher than anybody in NBA history. This was a Game 7 — the ultimate of games in sports for the elite — and somebody not named Kobe Bryant was the most valuable player. It was Ron Artest , Bryant’s teammate on the Los Angeles Lakers , and Artest forgot that he only was supposed to be a bit player in Bryant’s show by becoming the more consistent performer for the evening.

-One quick thought before we hit the stretch run: notice how the Lakers aren’t going to TEH MOST CLUTCH PLAYER EVAH down the stretch? I have. As much as Kobe has been Kobe all season, this hasn’t been uncommon. Pau Gasol has closed games as the go-to guy a lot this season, and he’s doing it again. Of course, as I say that, Kobe will take over at the very end and finish this off. -Movement. Movement. Movement. Movement. MOVEMENT! This is officially my new bumper sticker. -Gasol’s defense on pick and rolls has been unbelievable. LA is stopping Boston’s pet play – the Paul Pierce pick and roll. Yet another reason why I blog instead of coaching. -Kobe Bryant hits a jumper, Lakers by 4. I dread Mark Jackson’s lead-out to commercial. It turns out more tame than I expected. -Isn’t it funny how you can’t get your offensive rhythm back easily once you go to too many isolations? LA has played great defense, to be sure, but Boston definitely lost a lot when they started to rely too heavily on Pierce isolations late in the third quarter and early in the fourth quarter. Right now, Ray Allen is out of rhythm, for example, and so is Kevin Garnett. That definitely made a difference on Allen’s wide open missed jumper. -LA dodges a huge bullet there, because Ron Artest left Paul Pierce wide open to close out on Rasheed Wallace for no reason. Pierce missed the shot, Gasol got bailed out on the other end and actually hit his free throws. Lakers by 6. -I’m surprised we haven’t seen Boston post up Garnett on Gasol much this quarter. That would be a smart offensive set. -Speaking of out of rhythm … Ray Allen just missed a layup. -Kobe just got to the rim and got fouled on a dunk attempt. He missed another free throw. I find it funny that, if the Lakers win, Kobe will get praised for sticking with it on offense. The praise really should go to the Lakers’ defense for shutting down Boston’s offense, which has little to do with Kobe. -Garnett gets free for a dunk right after Mark Jackson said he’s never seen the Lakers play better defense, ever. I love karma. -Pau Gasol has 16 points and 15 rebounds, though it doesn’t seem like he’s made that kind of impact. I guess by my standards, nobody is playing well tonight. -Dribble, dribble, dribble, WHISTLE, foul, free throw attempt, missed free throw. -Paul Pierce and Ron Artest just traded dumb fouls on consecutive possessions. They might need to repaint the free-throw line after tonight.
