‘American Idol’ Champ Lee DeWyze’s Singles See Slow Sales

By Gil Kaufman Lee DeWyze Photo: Matt Stroshane/ Disney After a lackluster “American Idol” season and a finale with the second-lowest ratings in the show’s history, this year’s top two, winner Lee DeWyze and runner-up Crystal Bowersox , already had their work cut out for them. The long haul begins this week with the debut of their respective first official singles on the digital charts. And so far, the numbers are, well, modest. According to preliminary figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan, DeWyze’s cover of U2’s “Beautiful Day” will come in at #10 on the Current Digital Tracks chart, selling just over 95,000 copies, which is 25 percent less than last year’s champ, Kris Allen, sold with his almost universally panned coronation song, “No Boundaries.” With final SoundScan numbers due later today, Nielsen Entertainment Vice President Chris Muratore told USA Today that DeWyze and Bowersox are trending much lower than Allen and season-eight runner-up, Adam Lambert. “It’s about half the sales total of Kris Allen and Adam Lambert following the finale last year,” Muratore said of the season-nine pair’s combined download total of around 400,000. While Allen and Lambert placed 25 songs in the top 200 during their finale week, DeWyze and Bowersox managed to chart only nine songs among the top 200 downloads. The other four DeWyze songs in the top 200 were “Hallelujah” (#20, 63,000), “Falling Slowly” (duet with Bowersox, #32, 44,000), “The Boxer” (#55, 26,000), “Everybody Hurts” (#72, 22,000) , “Simple Man” (#107, 14,000) and “You’re Still the One” (#192, 6,000). Bowersox’s cover of Patti Griffin’s “Up to the Mountain” landed at #25 (49,000), followed by “Black Velvet” (#102, 15,000) and “Me and Bobby McGee” (#105, 14,000). Both DeWyze and Bowersox have already signed major-label deals , and if they follow the previous pattern of “Idol” top finishers, their debuts should be released around November or December. ‘Top kill’ stops oil leak flow in Gulf of Mexico, US Admiral says

Admiral Thad Allen, head of the government's effort to help staunch the oil leak that resulted after an offshore rig collapsed into the Gulf of Mexico, told reporters Thursday morning that BP's latest effort to plug the leak has succeeded, according to the Chicago Tribune (and Los Angeles Times). The so-called “top kill” effort, launched Wednesday afternoon by industry and government engineers in Houston, has pumped enough drilling fluid to block all oil and gas from the well, Allen said. The pressure from the well is very low, but persistent, he said. Once engineers have reduced the well pressure to zero, they will begin to pump cement into the hole to entomb the well. To help that effort, he said, engineers are also pumping some debris into the blowout preventer at the top of the well. Allen said one ship that was pumping fluid into the well has run out of the fluid, or “mud,” and that a second ship is on the way. Just because you broke up with your boyfriend or girlfriend doesn’t mean you won’t someday get back together. And get married. And see your spouse go on to win “American Idol.” That’s the takeaway from Kris Allen’s romance with his high school sweetheart, as the singer explains in the upcoming episode of “When I Was 17,” airing Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV. “When I was 17, I broke up with my future wife,” he admitted. Arkansas native Allen and future wife Katie had been dating for about a year when their final year of high school rolled around and Kris decided he needed space to rock out like a true senior. “She was awesome, but I was a jerk. I was like, ‘Aw, it’s my senior year. I’ve got to be free like a bird. Can’t have this ball and chain on me,’ ” he explained. He probably should’ve realized it before, but Allen was not exactly the type of guy who could move on from one girl and embrace countless others. “I had no game with the ladies, but with her, it was really easy to go up and talk to her, and everything just always clicked,” he said. “Everyone was like, ‘Oh, they’re going to end up together forever.’ ” Nonetheless, they split, first for a two-week break and then for what both thought would be a permanent separation. “She had a hard time dealing with it,” Allen said. “Actually, our lockers were right next to each other, so that was pretty tough.” But eventually they got back together and ended up getting hitched shortly before Allen debuted on the eighth season of “American Idol,” which he went on to win. But the guy still feels bad about how he treated his sweetheart back in the day. “I was more worried about my senior year and having fun than being a boyfriend,” he said. “I’m sorry, Katie. Mark Ronson teams up a Kaiser Chiefs/Lily Allen duet on new KC album

Lily Allen contributes vocals to a song on the forthcoming new Kaiser Chiefs’ album. Producer Mark Ronson is currently working on both Allen and the Kaiser Chiefs’ own records, and had the idea of teaming up Allen’s vocals with a Kaiser Chiefs track. He said: “The other week I was struck with the brainwave, ‘Why don’t they do a track together?’ I had a word with them all and everyone was keen so it happened.” Allen previously sang a cover of Kaiser Chiefs’ song ‘Oh My God’ for Ronson’s covers album ‘Version’. Speaking to The Sun Ronson said of the new song: “It sounds awesome. Lily and Ricky Wilson’s vocals really gel and the instrumentals are top drawer.” Ronson then that he thought the track will go down a treat at festivals. “We’re all hoping it’s going to be a big one,” he said. “I’d definitely rock out to it at a festival. Latest feud began when gossip blogger posted pictures of singer crying at football match. By James Montgomery Perez Hilton Photo: Jean Baptiste Lacroix/ WireImage Lily Allen and Perez Hilton have a long (and quite amusing) history of Twitter feuds, stretching all the way back to the winter of 2009, when the two engaged in an epic war of words that culminated in the Brit songstress calling the blogger “a parasite” and “a cheap-ass whore.” It was pretty amazing, to be honest. Round two went down in August of the same year, when Hilton posted a photo of Allen on his Web site (with the caption “Lily Allen + Motherhood = Bad Idea”) and linked to an interview she had given to Britain’s OK! magazine, in which she said she wanted to retire from the music business and raise a family. Hilton, ever the opportunist, used said interview to rip Allen’s virtues as a wannabe mom, writing, “We foresee the afternoon that Lily gets so drunk, she confuses the playpen for the pig pen and her baby has to waddle in mud for hours before someone notices!” Allen — who reportedly had suffered a miscarriage the previous year — was somewhat understandably upset and ripped into Hilton, calling him “an evil bastard” and threatening legal action.
