Gregg Allman Dies; Rock Legend Was 69

Gregg Allman, the singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist best known as the longtime frontman of The Allman Brothers Band, has passed away at the age of 69. Sources close to his family say Allman died peacefully at his home in Savannah. No cause of death was given, but a statement on his official website notes that Allman had been battling a number of serious ailments in recent years. “Gregg struggled with many health issues over the past several years,” the statement reads. “During that time, Gregg considered being on the road playing music with his brothers and solo band for his beloved fans, essential medicine for his soul. Playing music lifted him up and kept him going during the toughest of times.” Gregg formed the Allman brothers band with his brother, Duane Allman, who tragically passed away in a motorcycle accident in 1971 at the age of 24. Together, the brothers penned such Southern rock classics as “Midnight Rider,” “Whipping Post,” and “Melissa.” For many, the band’s distinct blend of bluesy roots rock and jam band psychedelia became one of the defining sounds of the late ’60s and early ’70s. Musically active until his final days, Allman’s influence as a singer, songwriter, and paragon of counterculture cool cannot be overstated. At the height of his fame, Allman was almost as well-known for his hedonistic lifestyle and high-profile romances as for his trailblazing music. Stories of Allman’s hard-partying ways contributed to his status as a living legend, but never eclipsed his music. (Asked by Stephen Colbert if the story of a private flight crew spelling out “Welcome, Allman Brothers Band” in cocaine was true, Gregg replied, “They abbreviated ‘Brothers.'”) Allman was married and divorced six times and became a tabloid staple during his highly-publicized split from music icon Cher in 1975. Within minutes of the news of his death, Allman’s name became the number one trending topic on Twitter, with tributes pouring in from family, friends, and a legion of devoted friend. “Words are impossible,” tweeted a clearly grief-stricken Cher. “I have lost a dear friend and the world has lost a brilliant pioneer in music,” wrote Allman’s friend and longtime manager, Michael Lehman.  “He was a kind and gentle soul with the best laugh I ever heard. His love for his family and bandmates was passionate as was the love he had for his extraordinary fans. Gregg was an incredible partner and an even better friend. We will all miss him.” Allman is survived by five children, including musicians Devon and Elijah Blue. We send our heartfelt condolences to those close to this iconic musician. May he rest in peace. Dan Toler Dies; Allman Brothers Band Member was 65

Dan Toler, a guitarist best known for his run with the Allman Brothers Band in the 1970s and 1980s, has passed away. He was 65 years old. The musician died Monday due to complications from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, better known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease. He had been suffering from the illness for two years. Toler joined the famous group in 1979 and played with it on three albums. By the end of his life, however, the artist was unable to speak or play his beloved instrument. “It is with great regret and sadness that our dear friend and loved one, Dan Toler, passed away peacefully in his sleep last night,” read a post on his Facebook yesterday. “Future service to be announced. Please keep Debbie and the family in your prayers. We would also ask at this time that you would respect the family’s privacy. The Toler family thanks you for all your love and support.”

Jim Jones Wants Diplomats Reality Show, Reunion Album In 2012

Jones tells ‘RapFix Live’ he wants the Harlem group’s comeback album to roll out with a reality show documenting their recording process. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Jim Jones on “RapFix Live” Photo: Fans have waited eight years for a third Diplomats album, what’s another few months? If Jim Jones has his way, the long-awaited Diplomatic Immunity 3 will be out by the end of the year. “Real soon; might be the fourth quarter,” the Dipset Capo said when he appeared on “RapFix Live” on June 13. Long after the group broke up , Jim, Cam’ron, Juelz Santana and Freekey Zekey announced two years ago that they would be coming back together and dropping a new album. The crew did reunite onstage this past weekend as Drake’s special guests during his concert at Jones Beach in New York, but the LP is still a ways off. “Me and Killa has been working diligently together and recording and things like that. So, everything is moving not as fast as everybody else would want it to, but it’s moving just on time for us,” Jim said, referencing he and the group’s lead MC Cam’ron. “The Diplomat album is definitely in the works.” There is a single in the pipeline, Jim briefly spoke on the Lil Wayne-assisted “Have You Ever Made Love to a Diplomat,” but didn’t say when fans will be able to hear it. If Jones had his way, the roll-out for the Harlem group’s comeback album will begin with a fall reality show documenting the quartet’s recording process. The program would then lead up to a December release for the LP. It’s all very hypothetical at the moment, Jones said. Group member Juelz Santana has been facing some legal trouble after a 2011 arrest following a raid on his New Jersey recording studio. He was charged with four counts of narcotic and weapon offenses. “They charged me with the firearms,” Elz said when he appeared on “RapFix Live” last June. “They didn’t charge me with trying to sell, but they put out a statement making it seem like I was selling weed out of my studio, which is preposterous. Dime bags? I got a phantom and a Bentley outside of my studio; I’m not selling dime bags. That sh– is just crazy.” The drama has affected Santana’s musical output, but Jones insists that he’s been working. “It’s hard when you have a break after another break and things start to pile up on you,” Jim said of his buddy. “In this past two months he’s been recording like a beast, so I know for sure he has like 30-something songs done.” What are your expectations for the Diplomats reunion album? ‘Killing’ Season Finale: The Killer Speaks

Actress Jamie Anne Allman, who plays Aunt Terry on the AMC drama, speaks out about staying silent on her killer secret. By Josh Wigler Jamie Anne Allman in AMC’s ‘The Killing’ Photo: Two seasons and 26 episodes later, “The Killing” has finally answered the nagging question it first posed in its pilot episode: Who killed Rosie Larsen? The answer, tragically enough, was never far from home. In the end, Rosie was killed by a one-two punch from Richmond campaign aide Jamie Wright and her own aunt Terry, who unwittingly delivered the killing blow. Though writers claim to have known the killer’s identity since the show’s first episode, “Killing” actress Jamie Anne Allman — who plays Terry on the AMC drama — didn’t learn about her character’s murderous actions until the eleventh hour. “[Showrunner Veena Sud] had called me a couple hours before I was going in to read for the table read for episode 13, the last episode, that I was the killer,” Allman told The Hollywood Reporter in a new interview. “When she gave me the news, I was upset, I started crying. I actually thought that while I was contemplating, ‘What if I’m the killer?’ that I’d be excited, but I started crying and started feeling bad for Terry. ‘Oh man, this is a really tragic situation.’ ” Allman said she was “shocked” and “surprised” by the “intense” revelation, and that preserving the secret of being the show’s titular killer was not an easy one to keep. “I thought I would just blab [it] out,” she admitted. “Even now, me being able to talk about it is weird because I haven’t been able to talk about it for so long. It’s not a dream if people are seeing it on TV, though, is it?” Ultimately, while she’s not happy that Terry wound up being Rosie’s killer, Allman said that she’s satisfied by the turn of events. “I don’t know if I would say happy but I would say fulfilled,” she said. “I feel like there is justice and a lot of people got to know someone who made a lot of bad choices. And have a little more understanding as to why she made those choices.” What do you think of the killer reveal? Tell us in the comments section below!
