Now that everyone has grown tired of touting the allegedly thrilling promise of 3-D, we may have some chance of figuring out exactly what its future might be. While I still think 3-D is almost less than a gimmick, I’ve come to think that its real promise lies not in big-budget filmmaking along the lines of The Adventures of Tintin or even a picture as wonderful as Hugo , but in the hands of directors working on a more modest scale who simply have a good idea and a spark of enthusiasm for the medium. Wim Wenders has brought that spark to a rather unlikely subject, the late German modern-dance choreographer Pina Bausch. For years, Wenders and Bausch, longtime friends, had been working on a movie together. Bausch died suddenly in 2009, at age 68, and Pina is Wenders’ tribute to her, less a strict documentary than a heartfelt — and visually gorgeous — celebration of Bausch’s work and her mode of working.
No one is immune to the Alamo Drafthouse’s strict no texting policy, not even comedian Patton Oswalt. Recently, Oswalt was in Austin promoting his new film Young Adult when the notorious Tweeter was caught on his phone in a well-lit, sparsely populated theater. Director Jason Reitman then walked in to kick him out and…wait a minute, this is a joke! At Comic-Con, ‘Twilight’ actor says he and John Singleton studied film. By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Taylor Lautner Photo: MTV News SAN DIEGO — Taylor Lautner is ready to abduct the title of Hollywood’s resident action star when “Abduction” hits theaters September 23, but he didn’t get there without a little inspiration from some of the genre’s greatest actors. When MTV caught up with the “Twilight Saga” star at Comic-Con 2011 this week, he revealed that he did more than admire the top action actors: He studied them. Considering “Abduction” is being described along the lines of the “Bourne” movies and “Minority Report,” it makes sense that Tom Cruise and Matt Damon are among Lautner’s biggest role models. “I studied film with John Singleton while preparing for the movie, and I chose Tom Cruise, Matt Damon, Denzel Washington, Harrison Ford; we just went down the list,” Lautner explained. “It would be an honor to have a tenth the career that those guys have.” Having spent so much time watching the movies, Lautner said he sometimes found himself copying their moves during his takes. It took him time to take a step back and figure out how to tailor — or “Taylor” — their concepts to his own acting style. He got a chance to meet Cruise while filming a promo for the 2010 MTV Movie Awards, and though their work together wasn’t action-oriented, Lautner said working with the “Mission: Impossible” actor was “surreal.” But was he able to hold it together around his idol? “I definitely played it cool,” Lautner said with a laugh. “It was hard.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Abduction.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . ‘We didn’t miss a step at all,’ Royce says on ‘RapFix Live’ of reuniting with Em. By Alvin Blanco, with reporting by Sway Calloway Royce Da 5’9″ Photo: MTV News With Detroit rappers Eminem and Royce Da 5’9″ back on friendly terms, fans are being rewarded with their forthcoming EP Hell: The Sequel, due in stores June 14. Recording under the moniker Bad Meets Evil, the celebrated lyricists told MTV News’ “RapFix Live” that the fluid back-and-forth on the project’s lead single, “Fast Lane,” was due to their latent chemistry. “Me and Royce, ever since back in the day when we did records together, we always had kind of a chemistry,” Eminem told MTV News. “It was fairly easy to play off what each other was doing, and I think we can [think] a lot alike.” As the “Evil” in the Bad Meets Evil equation, Em added that the project was the result of mending the rift he had with Royce, which dates back to when the latter stopped working with Dr. Dre and was feuding with D12. “This record, the way it came together, it wasn’t anything that we planned to do,” Em said. “We didn’t get together and say, ‘Hey, man, let’s make a Bad Meets Evil record.’ It was more so along the lines of us making amends and repairing our issues that we had, and then one day, Bad [Royce] brought a song to me and wanted me to jump on it, and the way it ended up coming out, it was pretty easy to do. It didn’t take a lot of time. It was fun to do it. The way we knocked that record out kind of quickly … it just morphed into this.” Added Nickel Nine: “It didn’t feel like work. We just had fun doing it.” Some of the previous fruits of Royce and Em’s good times in the studio, such as “Bad Meets Evil” from Em’s The Slim Shady LP, occurred more than a decade ago. But fans need not worry about whether the Motor City tag team will be on the same page musically for the rest of Hell: The Sequel, which features production from DJ Khalil, Bangladesh and Denaun Porter. “It was pretty nostalgic, actually,” Royce said of the recording process. “It took me back to when we used to do stuff back in the day. We clicked like that. I wasn’t really surprised. We didn’t miss a step at all.” Related Videos ‘RapFix Live’ With Eminem And Royce Da 5’9″ Related Artists Eminem Royce Da 5’9″
‘I’m nobody’s fool, I didn’t give up my day job,’ former Universal exec tells Hot 97 of Sony rumors. By Alvin Blanco, with reporting by Jim Cantiello L.A. Reid Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images Could L.A. Reid have another music executive gig up his sleeve? The music mogul resigned from his chairman post at Island Def Jam to become a judge on Simon Cowell’s “X Factor,” but he’s been dropping hints that he hasn’t completely abandoned the record label boardroom. When MTV News asked Reid whether the relationship “X Factor” has with Sony Music — the winner will get a recording contract from the label — means he may be taking on an executive role at the company in the near future, he didn’t totally dismiss the notion. “You’re good, you are so good, you’re good, let’s have that conversation another time,” Reid coyly told us. “Just hold that one for a little while; slow down, pal.” On Tuesday, during a phone interview with Hot 97’s Angie Martinez, Reid dodged a similar question from the radio personality while also noting that his gig on “X Factor” is only one of his gigs and “just a little bit of a shift.” “Listen, I’m nobody’s fool, I didn’t give up my day job,” Reid told Martinez. “I had to leave Universal Music Group and try my hat on someplace else that we’ll announce. We’ll announce that one in a little while.” While at Def Jam Reid, reported to Doug Morris, who recently left his post as chairman of the Universal Music Group. Morris will formally assume the role of CEO of Sony Music on July 1. Besides a recording contract from Sony Music, the eventual winner of “X Factor” will take home $5 million in cash. Cowell, Reid and the rest of the still-unannounced judges will be seeking artists with astronomical talents to match that windfall. “I’m personally looking for artists that are along the lines of today’s pop stars,” Reid said. “Whether it be a Rihanna or a Justin Bieber or a Kanye West or a Beyonc
Yahoo! Mail just conducted a poll of 2,000 people in the U.S, surveying them about their email behavior. One of the very surprising results to come out of the poll, is that 13% of adults think it is acceptable to break up with someone via email, IM, or text . What’s more, the study found that men are more likely than women to end a relationship this way. But that’s not all. The poll found that 1 in 5 people admit to having read their significant other’s email without their knowledge. When I read these stats, I had to go back and make sure that I had read it correctly, and not mistaken ‘adults’ for ‘teenagers’. But alas, I had not. I wasn’t really surprised with the finding that 70% of adults find it acceptable to send thank-you notes or cards via email, as I have already lamented the fact (even though I am guilty of it myself), that a lot of communication these days only happens via the web , but come on now, breaking up with someone over a text message or email! Really? And having no qualms about spying on your partner’s emails? That’s just straight up shady! A quick Google search about breaking up via email further baffled me. I found that there are entire sites dedicated to the online breakup, many of which claim the online breakup is best if you ‘don’t want to hurt the other person’, but really should be tag-lined as best if you ‘can’t stomach doing it in person’. There are convenient ‘how to’ guides , and even email templates for the ‘perfect’ breakup. Because, if it isn’t bad enough to break up with someone online, you can get someone else to write the breakup letter for you. Breaking up with someone using email or text message should never be acceptable. It is the coward’s way out and, in my opinion anyway, says a lot about you as a person (but I guess if you’re hacking into their emails, then I really shouldn’t expect any different). If you really don’t want to do it in person, at least be game enough to call. You’re most likely going to have to speak to them anyway, considering they will probably phone you after opening their email and reading your pathetic Dear John note, and the conversation is going to be a whole lot less pleasant after that than it needed to be. In a world where violence and cruelty seem to be common and almost acceptable, many parents wonder what they can do to help their children to become kinder and gentler—to develop a sense of caring and compassion for others. Raising kids who care isn’t a solution to violence by itself, but it’s reasonable to worry that being exposed to a lot of violence—whether it’s on television or on the streets —could make your children hard and uncaring. People sometimes think that children don’t really see the outside world—or other people—the way adults do, that they only view the world from their own eyes and in their own way. The most important thing you as a parent can do is to let your children know how much it means to you that they behave with kindness and responsibility. When you see your child doing something that you think is thoughtless or cruel, you should let them know right away that you don’t want them doing that. Speak to your child firmly and honestly, and keep your focus on the act, not on the child personally—something along the lines of ‘What you did is not very nice’ rather than ‘YOU are not very nice.’ Be frank, honest and upfront with your kids about what kind of behavior you do and don’t like. Keep your comments short and to the point; the idea is to teach them, not to make them feel guilty. In other words, our actions speak louder than words. If you are consistently caring and compassionate, it’s more likely that your children will be, too. Children watch their parents, and other adults, for clues on how to behave.
