New Study Shows That Black People Have Bias Against Black Hair Do you love your natural hair ? A new study claims that all people, including black folks, hold an implicit bias against the types and styles of natural hair worn by black people. According to NPR , The “Good Hair Study” was conducted by Perception Institute , known within the research community as “a consortium of researchers, advocates and strategists” that uses emotional and psychological research to identify and reduce bias in areas such as law enforcement, education, civil justice and the workplace. The hair study resulted from a partnership with Shea Moisture to better understand the link of implicit and black textured coils. Researchers asked over 4,000 participants to take an online test, which involved rapidly-changing pictures of black women with permed hair then black women with more natural hair. The study showed that most people, including blacks, have an implicit bias towards women of color based on their hair. But the results of the test show that the bias can be unlearned. Some key findings confirm that black women suffer more anxiety around hair issues, and spend more on hair care than their white peers. They are almost twice as likely to experience social pressure at work to straighten their hair compared to white women. The study also concludes that “White women demonstrate the strongest bias — both explicit and implicit — against textured hair.” They rated it as “less beautiful,” “less sexy/attractive” and “less professional than smooth hair.” However, white women who are in contact with black women naturalistas demonstrated lower levels of bias. Given that white women make up a large majority of the 38 percent of female managers who decide what looks are appropriate for work, legal conflicts sometimes ensue. What do you think of the study? Do you have a bias against black hair?
Study Shows 47% Of Black Men In Chicago Are Neither In School Nor Working A new study shows that almost half of all young African American men in Chicago are neither in school or unemployed according to Chicago Tribune reports: Forty-seven percent of 20- to 24-year-old black men in Chicago, and 44 percent in Illinois, were out of school and out of work in 2014, compared with 20 percent of Hispanic men and 10 percent of white men in the same age group, according to the report from the University of Illinois at Chicago’s Great Cities Institute. The numbers for black men are far worse in Chicago and Illinois than elsewhere in the country. In Los Angeles and New York City, 31 percent of black 20- to 24-year-old men were out of school and out of work, in line with the national average of 32 percent. While declines in youth employment across all races have raised concerns for a number of years, the new report puts into stark focus the connection between unemployment and Chicago’s racially segregated neighborhoods that also are home to high rates of poverty and crime. The report shows the highest concentration of youth unemployment is in neighborhoods on the city’s South and West sides, especially Fuller Park, Englewood, East Garfield Park and North Lawndale, each of which is more than 90 percent black. The lowest concentration is in mostly white neighborhoods on the North and Northwest sides. What do you think of the depressing stat? Read the rest of the article HERE .
Study Shows Conservatives Think “Mixed Race” People Are Black Black or White???? According to Daily Caller: Mixed-race people are more likely to be considered black by conservatives, who are subconsciously attempting to “justify racial divisions,” said the authors of a new government-funded study. The report, originally released earlier this month, has begun attracting criticism from those who see political bias in the results. The study was conducted by graduate students and faculty in the psychology department of New York University. Researchers asked participants to look at pictures of mixed-race people and say whether they were black or white. The study found that conservatives were more likely to think of a mixed-race person as black than were liberal participants. This relates to what social psychology researchers call the “one drop rule,” which states that people of mixed racial heritage are often lumped in whatever racial category has the lowest social standing. “Conservatives… may maintain traditional boundaries associated with the hierarchical social order — and, as a result, they categorize multi-racial individuals according to the most socially subordinate group membership,” said an NYU press release about the study. Seeking causes for this purported racism, the study gauged conservatives’ views by asking them whether “we should do what we can to equalize conditions for groups.” A “no” answer was indicative of a conservative who opposed equality. The study’s authors then made the connection: conservatives want to link mixed-race people with blacks as a means of preserving historical inequities. Discuss… Youtube

All black everything is bad news for your lungs according to a new study… New Study Shows Connection Between Lung Cancer And Racial Segregation A new study focusing on health and health care statistics has found that lung cancer is significantly more prominent in African-Americans living in racially segregated areas of the country. Other similar studies have found that the cause behind this growing epidemic in black communities may be the lack of access to health care. via Think Progress African-Americans living in highly segregated counties are at significantly elevated risk of dying from lung cancer, according to the results from a new study. According to New York Times reports, a study published in JAMA Surgery finds that black Americans in highly segregated areas are 20 percent more likely to die from the disease compared to those who live in the least segregated regions. While the JAMA report doesn’t delve into the causes behind the mortality rate disparity, other studies on American segregation have found that, in highly segregated locales, a larger minority population corresponded with significantly less access to surgical and emergency medical care. That data alone is not conclusive, but it does suggest that stratified access to health care remains an enormous hindrance to public health — particularly for people of color. Access to sufficient health care resources is vital for treating and preventing disease in any community, so this needs to change ASAP. Get yo ish….and get out! Study Shows That Adult Children Living At Home Are On The Rise All you anti-post racial society folks might want to stop reading here. Cause this study doesn’t point the finger at any specific race….it says adult children in America are pretty much equal opportunity freeloaders . Whether in their 20s or 30s, black or white, in the West or Northeast, adult kids find there’s no place like home when their finances are in a tailspin or their relationships in shambles. The number of young adults ages 20 to 34 who lived with their parents jumped from 17% in 1980 to 24% in 2007-09 — the Great Recession— according to a detailed analysis out today. The rise was sharpest among those under 25 — a new high of 43% vs. 32% in 1980 — but it increased largely across the board. Even among 30- to 34-year-olds, nearly one in 10 lived with parents. “This ‘Great Recession’ has had tremendous effects that previous smaller recessions did not,” says Zhenchao Qian, a sociology professor at Ohio State University and the author of the report for the US2010 Project, which studies trends in American society. “The surprise mostly is that it’s increasing for every group.” The only segment not affected: young adults with graduate degrees. The share living with parents has stayed at 8% since 1980. Do you agree with this study? Should parents put their foot down and kick their adult children to the curb more often?
