Update: Florida Christian School Decides Not To Expel Young Black Girl For ‘Wild Natural Hair’

We’re glad the school did the right thing. Girl Will Not Face Expulsion Over Natural Hair Kids come to school to learn. The focus shouldn’t be on hair, but on preparing these students to be productive members in society. According to Click Orlando: A Central Florida teen told Local 6 on Monday she faced expulsion because administrators at her private school wanted her to cut and shape her hair. But a day later, administrators appeared to have changed their mind, saying she will not be expelled. Vanessa VanDyke said she was given one week to decide to whether cut her hair or leave Faith Christian Academy in Orlando, a school she’s been going to since the third grade. But for now, she and her mother do not plan to change her hair because it is part of the 12-year-old’s identity. But her natural hair style comes with a cost. “It says that I’m unique,” said VanDyke. “First of all, it’s puffy and I like it that way. I know people will tease me about it because it’s not straight. I don’t fit in.” VanDyke said that first the teasing came from other students, but now, school leaders seem to be singling her out for her appearance. Faith Christian Academy has a dress code and rules against how students can wear their hair. The student handbook reads: “Hair must be a natural color and must not be a distraction,” and goes on to state examples that include, but are not limited to, mohawks, shaved designs and rat tails. Doesn’t make any sense. “A distraction to one person is not a distraction to another,” said VanDyke’s mother, Sabrina Kent. “You can have a kid come in with pimples on his face. Are you going to call that a distraction?” VanDyke said she’s had her large, natural hair all year long, but it only became an issue after the family complained about students teasing her about her hair. “There have been bullies in the school,” said Kent. “There have been people teasing her about her hair, and it seems to me that they’re blaming her.” “I’m depressed about leaving my friends and people that I’ve known for a while, but I’d rather have that than the principals and administrators picking on me and saying that I should change my hair,” said VanDyke. “I’m going to fight for my daughter,” Kent said. “If she wants her hair like that, she will keep her hair like that. There are people out there who may think that natural hair is not appropriate. She is beautiful the way she is.” School administrators told Local 6 in a statement on Tuesday, “we’re not asking her to put products in her hair or cut her hair. We’re asking her to style her hair within the guidelines according to the school handbook.” Vanessa and her mother will be discussing her hairstyle over Thanksgiving as school is in recess until Monday. This is why America is behind in education: we focus on the wrong thing in the classroom.

Jesus Take The Wheel: Mother Says 19-Year-Old Son Was Killed By Flu Shot After Falling Into A Coma 24 Hours After Taking Vaccine

This is sad. Man Dies After Taking Flu Shot He thought he was helping himself by getting the flu shot and it ended up killing him. Dayum. According to KSL: A Utah woman said a flu shot caused her son’s death. Lori Webb put her assertion in her son’s obituary and is warning other families about what she believes are potential hidden dangers of vaccinations. “I could not believe it,” Webb said. “I never in my life would ever think ‘Your son is in a coma?’ How does it happen?” Lori Webb said her son, Chandler Blake Webb, 19, was the perfect picture of health and was preparing to submit his papers for a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. However, the day after a physical, tuberculosis test and flu shot, Chandler turned very ill. Within a few days, he was in the hospital for the second time. Within 24-hours of his second check-in, Webb said her son was in a coma. He had previously suffered from numerous severe symptoms, including shaking and vomiting. “This was his first flu shot,” Webb said. “He’d never had one before.” Chandler Webb’s family ultimately elected to take him off life support, and he died after 28 days in the hospital. “I hate this,” Lori Webb said Friday afternoon before her son’s viewing, tears streaming down her cheeks. “I hate that I have to bury my son.” Utah Department of Health officials did not go into specifics about the case. Instead, a spokesperson said the department was aware of the case. Another spokesperson late Friday offered another statement: “Our epidemiology staff have [sic] commented that although they have no evidence of a flu vaccine (or any other kind of vaccine) causing this type of reaction/outcome, they take these reports very seriously and they are thoroughly investigated by the [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention].” Webb admitted to reporters that not even all the neurologists on her son’s team agree to blame the flu shot, but she also said every test for a disease came up negative. “They cannot prove any other thing,” Webb said. “My gut tells me that too.” Does this story make you rethink getting a flu shot?

Welcome to AmeriKKKa folks! Fourth San Jose State Student Charged With Hate Crime Via Reuters reports: A fourth student at a California university has been suspended for being involved in alleged racially motivated abuse of a black student , an occurrence that has led to student protests on campus. The suspension of the fourth student, which followed suspensions and misdemeanor hate crime charges against three other students, was disclosed by San Jose State University President Mohammed Qayoumi in a statement late Friday. Qayoumi did not identify the fourth student or say whether he might also face charges. The victim in the incident that led to student protests at the campus in Northern California has not been named. Logan Beaschler and Colin Warren, both 18, and Joseph Bomgardner, 19, have been charged with misdemeanor hate crime and battery against their black roommate, Santa Clara County Deputy District Attorney Erin West said. The three freshmen students are accused of using racist terms to refer to the young man, displayed Nazi symbols and a Confederate flag in their suite and once tried to put a U-shaped bicycle lock around his neck, causing him minor injuries when he fought back, authorities said. Qayoumi said he met Friday with the Reverend Jethroe Moore, president of the San Jose/Silicon Valley Chapter of the NAACP and agreed take several steps to address the issue. They will hold a news conference Monday on the criminal charges, host a campus forum on the topic in the first half of December and offer a lecture series next spring on diversity and tolerance. “While these efforts move forward, we are undertaking a comprehensive review of SJSU’s student code of conduct,” Qayoumi said. “Our goal is including race-based misconduct in existing zero-tolerance student conduct policies.” What happened to the “post-racial” America we’re supposed to be living in?

SMH: Teacher Suspended Without Pay For Forcing Student To Say Pledge “Or Go Back To Your Home Country”

This is America right? Teacher Suspended For Forcing Student To Say Pledge This teacher was out of line. According to Raw Story: A Florida teacher was recently suspended without pay for five days after school officials said that she forced a fourth grade student to violate his religious beliefs and say the Pledge of Allegiance. The Tampa Bay Times reported that the student, whose Jehovah’s Witness religion forbids him from worshiping objects, was used to standing silent while the other students put their hands over their hearts and recited the pledge. But on the morning of Sept. 11, Explorer K-8 School teacher Anne Daigle-McDonald forcibly placed the boy’s hand over his heart. “You are an American, and you are supposed to salute the flag,” she said, turning to the class. “In my classroom, everyone will do the pledge; no religion says that you can’t do the pledge.” “If you can’t put your hand on your heart, then you need to move out of the country,” the teacher reportedly added. Hernando County Schools Division of Business Services-Heather Martin Executive Director later told Daigle-McDonald that nearly all of the students in her fourth grade class had recalled her telling them the next day to move back to their home country if they didn’t want to say the pledge. “But that’s not what I said,” Daigle-McDonald insisted. “It was directed at citizenship. I was talking about pledging allegiance to our country, and if you don’t want to pledge to our country, you should go to your home country.” The teacher said that she had no idea that the boy was a Jehovah’s Witness but admitted that the mother had told her he did not celebrate holidays. “[I] just wanted all of the students to respect the day,” she remarked. “It wasn’t a holiday, so I didn’t see why the whole class couldn’t say the pledge.” She needs her azz whooped for putting her hands on that child. What Time Is It? Daylight Saving Time Ends, Sends America Scrambling

Daylight Savings Time came to an abrupt, dramatic conclusion and took America by storm early Sunday, prompting millions of people to ask, “What Time Is It?” Seriously. “Time” is a Trending topic on search engines right now, and not due to a sudden spike in interest regarding the iconic weekly news magazine. “Daylight Savings Time,” “What Time is It?” and “Local Time” are also popular choices. Chaos. It is bedlam out there in America, people. So what happened? It’s complex, but we’ll break it down for you real quick here: Early this morning, for the first time since November 2012, U.S. residents (sans Arizona lucky) were required to move their clocks backward one hour. Just jaw-dropping, unprecedented stuff, we know. With that in mind, THG has provided a helpful End of Daylight Saving Time visual aid (above) to help you navigate this and keep your anxiety at bay. You got this, people. We believe. Make us proud. Follow the jump for more DST fun facts … The concept of Daylight Saving Time dates way back to 1895. The idea – advancing clocks during lighter months so evenings have more daylight and mornings have less – has been praised and criticized. Historically, retailing, sports and tourism interests have favored daylight saving, while agricultural and other interests have been opposed to it. DST’s initial adoption was prompted by energy crises and war. It was recently extended across the U.S. to save energy use. Arizona, Hawaii and Puerto Rico do not observe it. Lucky. Daylight Saving Time begins Sunday, March 9. You may begin planning accordingly … or just forget and panic all over again that morning. If you can’t figure out how to change the effing clock in your car, don’t worry. Just make a mental (or Post-It) note that it’s an hour fast until 3/9. The more you know.
