Director James Gray Says Immigration Enriches Society Like many issues that are currently plaguing Washington, the topic of immigration is gaining the attention of those beyond the hill, including Hollywood film director James Gray. via USA Today Director James Gray might be portraying 1920s Ellis Island in his Cannes Film Festival competition film The Immigrant. But the story of coming to America at that time shines a light on attitudes Americans have toward immigrants today, Gray said at a press conference on Friday. Latinos, for example, are referred to in the same derogatory terms that in-coming Europeans were referred to in past generations. “I wish we would free ourselves from the racism and prejudice because I think (immigration) is one of the most important aspects to a dynamic culture,” Gray said. “After a while you have to accept the fact that (immigration) is part of what enriches the society. It doesn’t debase the society.” The Immigrant stars French actress Marion Cotillard as a newly arrived Polish woman trying to survive in New York, and also features Jeremy Renner and Joaquin Phoenix. Candice Glover Gushes Over American Idol Victory: A Dream Come True!

That’s what Candice Glover uttered last night upon being crowned American Idol winner , citing the number of seasons on which she’s appeared. “I’m still trying to process it,”‘ she told reporters soon after the finale ended. “I don’t even know my name! Oh my gosh! I don’t know what’s happening! It feels amazing though to finally have gotten to this point after working so hard for so long. Among other topics touched on by the Season 12 champion: What she’s learned on the show : How to be confident and how to be myself and to be okay with who I am. In previous seasons, I was doing what I thought America wanted, or what the judges or whoever wanted. But this year, I just did whatever I wanted to do. Hence, I would do a rapper’s song on the show or I would do The Cure when no one expected me to. Her relationship with Kree Harrison : We tell each other we love each other probably 90,000 times a day, but it really meant a lot for her to hug me and say, “I love you and I’m so happy for you!” And I said the same to her. I’m so proud of her. The reaction from Nicki Minaj : Nicki came up to me and said I was a superstar! She wanted to hug me! She was joking when she was saying, “Can I hug the American Idol?” Every time I say that, I just can’t believe it! She always tells me to have fun and be myself. I love Nicki and would love to collaborate with her. Will she Direct Message Drake? Isn’t it even crazy that I can do that though? That he even follows me on Twitter? I don’t know… he knows that I want to talk to him, because people have been tweeting him. And he did say that he was proud of me! Attending Prince Harry’s fundraising reception at NYC’s Four Seasons Restaurant on Tuesday, May 14, Miss USA Nana Meriwether gushed over the possibility of meeting — and falling in love — with the U.K. royal. Openly admitting to having a crush on Prince William’s little brother, Meriwether was pleased when she found out about Harry’s towering height from reporters. According to an Us Weekly insider, the 6-foot tall beauty pageant winner, 27, “giggled” when she was told that Harry, 28, is 6-foot-2 inches. “Perfect!” she announced. “We are meant to be! Miss USA is like royalty in America so it’ll be a pleasure to meet him.” Inquiring if Harry was officially single, she added, “It would make a great story — we should totally get married.” Unfortunately, Meriwether, a two-time All-American volleyball player and USC graduate student, didn’t have the chance to make a love connection. Harry, the guest of honor, was flocked by the crowd of 200, dashing Miss USA’s hopes for a romance. Moreover, Harry is reportedly dating dance student Cressida Bonas, 24, whom Harry was seen skiing with during a trip to Switzerland in February. Indeed, finding love couldn’t have been further away from Harry’s mind during the star-feted night, where Will.i.am and Sean Lennon were in attendance. While giving a speech on behalf of himself, William, and Kate Middleton, Harry thanked The American Friends of The Royal Foundation, which raised at least half a million dollars that’ll directly help “mentor and train our next generation of truly inspirational young sports coaches.” Earlier on Tuesday, Harry visited NYC’S Harlem neighborhood where he played baseball with underprivileged children and called the time there “truly uplifting.” Harry’s U.S. visit wraps up Wednesday, May 15, with a polo match in Greenwich, Conn. What The Hell??? Human Head Found At California Recycling Plant After Being Dumped

The world is going to hell in a handbasket. A human head was found in a batch of trash dumped at a West Oakland recycling plant this week. Via NYDailyNews reports : A mummified human head has been found dumped at a California recycling plant. Shocked staff at California Waste Solutions, in West Oakland, made the horrifying discovery in a load of refuse that was dropped off Wednesday morning. Cadaver dogs have been drafted to hunt for any other body parts that could also have been thrown away. Cops say the gender of the rotting skull, which showed signs of trauma, cannot yet be identified. They are now trawling through dental records to see if there is a match. But officers added they are treating the case as murder. Investigators are now trying to locate from where the load that included the head was picked up. The firm services homes and firms across the Bay Area, reports the Contra Costa Times. We hope they’re able to find the culprit. The world we live in these days. SMH! CBS SF BAY AREA

The Latino takeover is in full effect. And like always, Sesame Street is embracing the changing face of America by encouraging kids to be open to other cultures and languages. Their latest cast member is a curly headed ‘Rican who Via NY Daily News reports : Children’s television series “Sesame Street” said on Friday it was adding a third Spanish-speaking character to its cast and will put a special focus on Hispanic heritage in its upcoming season, in an acknowledgement of changing U.S. demographics. Bilingual character Armando, who will be portrayed by 26-year-old Puerto Rico-born actor Ismael Cruz Cordova, will debut in September on the long-running series of people and puppets that airs on public broadcaster PBS. “Like his character ‘Mando,’ Ismael represents a culturally fluid and deeply layered new generation of Hispanic-Americans,” Carol-Lynn Parente, executive producer of “Sesame Street,” said in a statement. “He has a passion for creative expression and a warmth that comes right through the camera,” Parente added. “Sesame Street” previously added two bilingual Spanish-speaking actors and one bilingual puppet, Rosita. Puppet Ovejita, who only speaks Spanish, appears occasionally. The United States is on a path to becoming a “majority minority” nation as minority babies topped 50 percent for the first time in 2011, with Hispanics the largest and fastest-growing minority group. “Sesame Street,” which is entering its 44th season, is produced by the non-profit Sesame Workshop in New York.
