Martinez wins “Dancing With the Stars” Photo: ABC On Tuesday night’s “Dancing With the Stars” finale, there was much pomp before the circumstance. By the time the dust settled, war hero J.R. Martinez and his partner Karina Smirnoff were crowned season 13 champs. The three finalists — Ricki Lake, Rob Kardashian and Martinez — danced one last time before Martinez’s win was announced. Lake and her partner Derek Hough were up first, redoing what they considered to be one of their best dances. The judges thought it was unforgettable. “This is one of the most memorable dances of this or any season. The first time around, I really liked it. I love it the second time around,” head judge Len Goodman told the pair. The judges scored them 30/30. Next up, was Kardashian and his partner Cheryl Burke, redoing their emotional dance from earlier in the season, which Kardashian dedicated to his late father. The judges noted a quick mistake he made on a slide, but Bruno Tonioli said, “You really have improved beyond everyone’s expectations. You make even the little hiccup look charming.” The judges scored them 26/30. Martinez and Smirnoff rounded out the routines by taking another shot at a jive, and even though they had a few missteps, judge Carrie Ann Inaba said, “You are such a catalyst for joy whenever you get out on this dance floor.” The judges scored them 28/30. The judges finally revealed which of the three would be the first to head home. Surprisingly, it was Lake and Hough, who were favorites for much of the season. “I’ve loved basically every minute of this. John Pike casually pepper spraying a group of UC Davis students like he’s Febrezing a sofa, 84-year-old Dorli Rainey being helped away from a confrontation in Seattle after being doused herself, Marine Scott Olsen getting carried out through a haze of tear gas in Oakland with a fractured skull. These recent events lend Oren Moverman’s Rampart a queasy immediacy even though it’s set in the ’90s, as the LAPD’ s Rampart Division struggles through the notorious police misconduct scandal that ended up implicating dozens of officers and inspired the likes of Training Day and The Shield .

‘Dancing With The Stars’: Rob Kardashian Steps Up

Only one will be crowned the winner on Tuesday’s (November 22) “Dancing With the Stars” season finale, but you better believe Ricki Lake, Rob Kardashian and J.R. Martinez are hoping their dance moves win over America’s heart. On Monday night, they performed two dances each — the second was a freestyle dance — and the judges loved what Kardashian brought to the table. After weeks of seeing everyone else nab the highest scores, it was the reality star who brought home the top spot on the leaderboard. Here’s how everyone fared: Ricki Lake and Derek Hough Lake, the sole remaining woman in the competition, went first, dancing the cha-cha to Chris Brown’s “Yeah 3x,” and the judges loved it, telling her she was living the dance and exuding confidence. “Action-packed performance. Good timing. Good rhythm. Hips were working good. It’s a dance deserving of this final. Well done,” hard-to-please judge Len Goodman told her. 27/30 When Lake came back for her freestyle, she burst through a screen (of her larger self from earlier in the season; since being on the show she’s shed quite a bit of weight), and they shimmied and flipped and twisted and turned all about the stage. The judges said their dance was demanding and difficult. “It was fun, it was entertaining. Overall, what a great number,” Goodman said. 27/30 Lake’s overall score: 54/60 Rob Kardashian and Cheryl Burke The reality star —whose big sister Kim watched from the audience for the first time since her divorce — danced the waltz, and the judges found his movements to be a little heavy and said he lost his posture at times. Carrie Ann Inaba said he was the male version of Cinderella. Overall, they thought it was simple and beautiful. “Tonight, you were flowing and you were glowing. So full of expression. I love the continuity of lines,” judge Bruno Tonioli said. 27/30 For their second dance of the night, Kardashian and Burke danced on a set that mirrored Harlem, New York’s Cotton Club, and Cheryl said she wanted to play to Rob’s strengths. That meant their dance started off slow and then kicked up a notch and finished fast. The judges said their dance blew them all away. “Brilliant contact! Brilliant execution! Brilliant performance!” Tonioli yelled. 30/30 Kardashian’s overall score: 57/60 J.R. Martinez and Karina Smirnoff For much of the season, he’s topped the leaderboard — or at least been close — until last week. His ankle was injured, but he danced in spite of it, and his scores suffered. For his cha-cha on Monday, his ankle was in much better shape, but the judges said Martinez was off-time and there were many mistakes. Tonioli was the lone judge who gave him praise. Carrie Ann Inaba offered: “I think when people watch you dance, they just fall in love with your spirit. Tonight, your musicality was a bit off. We’re in the finals, so watch your arms. I know you’ve got it in you.” 24/30 Martinez performed the final freestyle of the night, and they went with a Latin-inspired routine to pay homage to his Latin heritage. The judges said this time around, he redeemed himself. They said his dance was hypnotic and found it to be an incredible comeback from his first-round routine. “That’s the way to come back! I get that Roman Polanski is a cinematic genius who was just fucked up when his wife and their unborn baby was killed by Charles Manson, so fucked up that he did the natural thing guys do when they are at their lowest, and fed a teen drugs and had sex with her, forcing him to flee the country and live in exile in Switzerland, never to return because it is not worth getting arrested for…. I also get that you can’t judge a man by his sexual dysfunction, I mean if we did, we wouldn’t have priests to talk to, elementary school teachers to teach or kids, birthday party clowns….or gays and lesbian friends. But I like to point and laugh when actors or other people are hamming it up with perverts and kissing them like they aren’t perverts because it is a political move for their careers, because the man is a genius, without realizing all the Christians back in America, who are likely perverts themselves, just oppresed properly, are going to be offended by her being so Euro and lax about sex offenders….cuz Europe remains far cooler than America on all levels…. Lisa Ling On Black Male Prison Crisis “Our America: Generation Incarceration” [Video]

Finally Oprah is stepping her game up and showing some stuff black people actually want to see on the OWN network. Lisa Ling is taking on the prison industrial complex with her latest episode of “Our America” : Lisa Ling has covered a range of topics on her documentary series “Our America,” from underage sex trafficking to the difficulties of being gay and Christian. Now, the 38-year-old journalist is taking on the issue of black male incarceration. In an episode titled “Incarceration Generation,” Ling will explore the disproportionate number of black men behind bars and the challenges they face after being released. The show will also discuss the effect imprisonment has had on multiple generations, creating a cycle of poverty in the African American community. Ling spoke about her work with the OWN network series that is now in its second season, a venture she took on after doing investigative work for the National Geographic Channel and a three year stint on ABC’s “The View.” “It has certainly been the most gratifying work experience I’ve ever had,”she said, according to Eurweb.com. “I can’t tell you how many times throughout the course of shooting this series, that I felt like I was in a foreign place or a distant place. But the reality is that all of these stories, in their greatest complexity, are in our backyards.” Statistics show that an incarcerated man is not foreign within the black community. According to the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics, non-Hispanic blacks comprised 39.4 percent of the total prison and jail population in 2009, with an imprisonment rate that was six times higher than white males and almost three times higher than Hispanic males. That number goes beyond prison doors and into homes. A Bureau of Justice Statistics special report found that over 1.7 million children had a parent in prison in 2008, usually a father. Of those fathers, four in 10 in state or federal prisons were black. Studies have found that children of incarcerated parents face unique difficulties including increased chances of homelessness, agressive behavior, failure in school and future imprisonment. In addition, ex-offenders are far less likely to find a job upon their release from prison, crippled not only by their criminal record, but oftentimes, additionally hindered by their lack of experience and education. According to a 2003 report by the New York University Urban Institute Reentry Roundtable, about 70 percent of offenders and ex-offenders are high school dropouts. Ling takes on these issues and more in the episode, which airs Nov. 20 at 10pm ET/PT. This one looks like it might be good. Check out the sneak peek below: More On Bossip! Kristin Cavallari Attends Marine Corps Ball

Kristin Cavallari served the United States of America proudly last night. The former Hills star looked stunning as she attended a Marine Corps ball in Temecula, Calif., with Lance Cpl. Jonathan Burkett, who asked her out on Twitter! Here’s the happy pair at the event, in a photo obtained by TMZ … Like Justin Timberlake , who attended one last weekend (there are many Marine Corps balls across the U.S.), Kristin Cavallari was reportedly the best date ever, humble but outgoing, and taking pictures with anybody who asked. She didn’t try to pull an early exit, either, staying until after they shut the place down. Burkett said of this season’s Dancing With the Stars contestant: “[Kristin] was awesome for sure. She looked very beautiful. Jay Cutler is a lucky guy.” That he is, no doubt. He better not blow the engagement again!

Lonnie Rashid Lynn, Jr.  has turned multitasking into an art form. One day he is sitting on a panel with Robin Williams , Elijah Wood and Hank Azaria trading jokes about their frosty, eco-friendly new movie Happy Feet 2 . The next day the artist more commonly known as…Common… is in the studio finishing up his ninth album, The Dreamer The Believer . Between all of this he is promoting his memoirs “One Day It’ll All Make Sense” and a new TV Show, “Hell On Wheels”, where he plays a freed slave working on the railroads in the 1800s. More than Common…Extraordinary! How does someone keep all of these disparate interests straight in their head, especially coming from an industry that places a premium on being “real”? “You go to those different places inside of you,” Common tells TheUrbandaily.com between bites of his lunch at The Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles. “I think a lot of us as human beings express these different qualities; love, anger, fear. All those things…joy. The way I was raised I came up seeing the streets but I was also educated in private school. So I’ve been able to express myself in different ways.” The cliche is that luck favors the prepared but it’s still an impressive feat to have a book, an album, a movie and a television series coming out in the same quarter. However, Common is humble about the whole convergence, chalking it up to an unseen hand at work that is certainly not the illuminati. “Everything is happening when it’s supposed to,” he says. “It’s God’s divine order that all this came out at the same time. I did Happy Feet 2 a year and some ago. The album was supposed to come out earlier and it’s coming out in December. I thank God for the way people are reading the book and now I’m on a panel with Robin Williams and Elijah Wood. This is what I do and I love it.” In Happy Feet 2 Common voices a penguin named Seymour. His son Atticus is a little b-boy that would give Chilly Willy a run for his money on the mic.  With this role Common joined a growing list of rappers voicing cartoons like Queen Latifah , Fat Joe and Xzibi t all because a previous opportunity fell through. “[Director] George Miller and I were going to work on J ustice League for Warner Brothers,” he explains. “It didn’t go through but he and I built a good relationship and I hold him in a high regard. I saw Happy Feet and thought it was really fresh. I was impressed and loved it. He called me and said he wanted me to [voice] this character in Happy Feet 2 and I said I’d love to. I haven’t been part of any films where the whole family could go and enjoy it.  This was my first opportunity to do animated voice over work. It was incredible.” Common, who is the father of a 14-year-old girl has personal experience with playing a protective dad. “She was into it but she’s in her teenage stage now. She wanted to go see The Ides Of March , ” he says with a laugh. “But she was happy that I was  a part of the film. Just the other day we were riding around and she said this is everywhere.” Common may have better luck getting her to tune into his AMC series, “Hell On Wheels”.  In the small screen Western Common plays Elam Ferguson, a biracial ex-slave working on the Union Pacific Railroad. “‘Hell on Wheels’ is an incredible show because it deals with all these different people of different cultures and backgrounds coming together to build this railroad,” he shares.  “It’s the American dream being built and [it shows] how some people relate. Some get a long, some don’t, it’s like a reflection of America today. My character is real strong. It’s a character you haven’t seen depicted in film or TV from a Black person in that era. Maybe Denzel in Glory , but it’s still a little different.” All of these many moods seem to manifest themselves on Common’s new album, and rightfully so. On the combative “So Sweet” he boasts lines like “Hip-Hop’s master cleanse and I’m gonna get my sh*t off…”, which is the antithesis of the more ethereal “ Blue Sky.” But like his many outlets in the world of entertainment there are many sides to Common waiting to be revealed. “Doing a song like ‘Sweet’ was just me too, and being able to go in my imagination and be a penguin is also an aspect of my creativity. I always feel proud to represent hip-hop in whatever world we go to.” Happy  Feet 2 will be in theaters on Friday November 18th.
