Florence And The Machine Almost Went Gaga On Ceremonials

In new interview with Billboard, Florence Welch reveals she nearly worked with Lady Gaga and Katy Perry’s hitmaking teams. By James Montgomery Florence Welch on the cover of Billboard magazine Photo: Billboard Florence Welch graces the cover of the new issue of Billboard magazine (on stands now), and inside, she talks about the making of Ceremonials, her brand-new album with the Machine due November 1 here in the States. Welch began work on Ceremonials (the follow-up to their 2009 breakout Lungs ) more than 18 months ago, and during those early stages, they toyed with the notion of making the new album with the same hitmakers responsible for Lady Gaga and Katy Perry’s success. But eventually, as she told the magazine, Welch decided against it because it would be too much of a departure. “I love Lady Gaga and I love Katy Perry and R&B and rap music. … I love big, American pop music. … So the label said, ‘Do you want to go over to America to work in that scene?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, OK. Maybe I could bring my own take on it,’ ” she recalled. “It got put in the diary to go out for a week, to start writing the new record. And then the diary got sent to me, and I looked at it and just went, ‘No … I can’t do that. This is too weird. I can’t just suddenly leave behind everything that made Lungs. ‘ ” Instead, she decided to work with producer Paul Epworth (most recently known for Adele’s multi-multi-platinum 21 ), and yet, sessions kept getting delayed due to Florence’s continued success in the U.S., thanks in no small part to her show-stealing performance at the 2010 Video Music Awards . Eventually, with Epworth working on tracks in his London studio and Welch recording vocals in U.S. studios during days off from her tour, the duo finished some 40 tracks, 12 of which made the cut for Ceremonials (a total of 20 will be included on the album’s deluxe version, Billboard reports). “I’m pretty surprised at how prolific I’ve been, to be honest. When making the first album, I think I wrote a song about every six months,” Welch said. “The first album was so much about the vocals carrying it. This time I really wanted to give the music space to breathe and for the band to be able to experiment.” Of course, though she was under the gun to finish the new album, Welch says she never felt pressure — mostly because she’d already felt it during the making of her first album. “Nothing could have been harder than making the first record, so I was prepared for the onslaught this time,” she said. “There was a huge amount of media scrutiny on me. … Those conditions of people waiting and waiting, that expectance, everyone talking about you … those are the conditions that I did my first album in. This one, by comparison, is much easier. I came into it having a much clearer idea of what sound I wanted to make and a much clearer idea of what was going to happen after the record was finished.” What are you expecting from Florence’s next album? Barbara Palvin Turning Me On in Some Photoshoot of the Day

Barbara Palvin is an Eastern European model who was born in October 8, 1993 – That means she is 17 for 1 more week, so take in these pictures of her stripped down to her panties for Elle Hungary, because in America, 17 year olds in panties, unless they work for Victoria’s Secret in the 90s, are illegal, where as in Eastern Europe they are prime to be mail order, or at least to be human trafficked because they know what’s up…

Starring Shawn and Marlon Wayans. Now what is more funny than two black male cops dressed up as rich spoiled rotted white girls. ‘X Factor’ First-Night Ratings Underwhelming

With 12.1 million viewers, Simon Cowell’s show pulls half ‘American Idol’ season 10 premiere audience. By Gil Kaufman Simon Cowell on “The X Factor” Photo: FOX Simon Cowell has been talking all week about how he’d like his new reality singing show to bury the competition, which, in his case is his old reality singing stomping grounds, “American Idol.” Well, “The X Factor” is going to have to do a lot better than it did during its Wednesday night debut if it’s going to reach the “Idol” critical mass. According to overnight ratings, not only did “Factor” pull about half of the typical “Idol” market share, it wasn’t even the highest-rated show that aired last night. According to Nielsen, “Factor” pulled in 12.1 million viewers for its heavily hyped two-hour debut, with a 4.4/12 rating in the prized 18 to 49 demographic, which was far below the numbers for the night’s ratings champ, Emmy-winning sitcom “Modern Family,” which boasted 14.3 million viewers and a 6.0/15 for its season premiere. In fact, “Factor” was only the fourth most-watched show of the night. The Hollywood Reporter noted that overall “Factor” averaged an 8.7 rating, which was half of the 16.4 rating “Idol” pulled in earlier this year in its season 10 premiere, which drew 26.1 million eyeballs in January. The trade magazine called it a “quiet start” for a show with the richest prize on TV — a $5 million recording contract — and which the mag reported cost the Fox network $250 million to obtain the U.S. rights from NBC. That’s on top of the untold millions Fox spent promoting the show all summer and what we can only assume is Cowell’s hefty producer/judging fee. Before the “Factor” debut, Cowell told the Reporter he would view anything less than 20 million viewers for the first show as a “disappointment.” As with “Idol,” it’s likely the ratings for “X Factor” will grow as the season progresses and the competition becomes more intense among contestants to whom viewers have become attached. And judging from the first episode, while the show certainly has some glaring similarities to “Idol,” there are enough novel touches — a wider age range of contestants, singing groups and a live audience at auditions — that like the hit singing competition “The Voice,” Cowell’s latest might find its footing and end up with solid, but perhaps not record-shattering ratings. Or, it could be that no matter how much we love to hate Cowell, America doesn’t have enough room in its heart for three celebrity-packed singing shows . Only time will tell. Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.

‘Lion King’ 3-D Begins New Circle Of Life At Box Office

Steven Soderbergh’s ‘Contagion’ follows at #2, with Ryan Gosling vehicle ‘Drive’ at #3. By Ryan J. Downey “Lion King 3-D” Photo: Disney What’s old was new again as Disney’s iconic “The Lion King” became the #1 movie at the box office over the weekend, taking in an estimated $29.3 million with a souped-up 3-D redo of the 1994 original. “Drive,” one of the year’s best-reviewed films, was #3 in its weekend debut, while the poorly reviewed remake of “Straw Dogs” and Sarah Jessica Parker’s even-worse-reviewed “I Don’t Know How She Does It” both flopped in their debuts. Last week’s #1 movie, “Contagion,” dropped to #2 this week. “The Lion King” 3-D re-release earned more than the other three new releases combined. The film’s original-run IMAX re-release (back in 2002) and the past weekend’s numbers pushed “The Lion King” from #25 to #17 on the all-time domestic box-office chart, according to Box Office Mojo . The animated tale, which has also quite successfully been adapted for Broadway, has made $357.8 million in the United States to date. Steven Soderbergh’s ensemble procedural drama “Contagion” made $14.5 million in its second weekend of release, for a total of $44.2 million. “Drive” took in $11 million, but while the film has set Twitter abuzz in critic circles, it remains to be seen how it will continue to play with a broader audience. “This is one of Ryan Gosling’s best performances,” Aisle Seat reported. “The Help” came in at #4 at the box office, adding $6.4 million for a total of $147.3 million. The remake of director Sam Peckinpah’s 1971 thriller “Straw Dogs,” featuring “True Blood” star Alexander Skarsg
