‘It is very different, and I’m growing up,’ she says of the yet-untitled summer record. She’s 18, in a high-profile romance and has left Disney Channel’s “Wizards of Waverly Place” behind for less tween fare. Her next step also includes her forthcoming album and the empowering first single “Who Says.” “We haven’t decided [a] title [yet for the album] and we’re dealing with the album artwork, ’cause it is very different and I’m growing up,” she told MTV News. “It’s a lot more mature.” Gomez admits that she really loves stepping out of the Disney shadow to grow up in a big way on this album. “I’m growing,” she said. “I’m constantly changing, and it’s fun being able to express that for my fans. So this album is a huge rave; it really is. It’s funky, it’s different. I’m liking it.” The album will not feature any duets or collaborations, but Gomez does have a wish list just in case she feels the need to throw someone on one of the tracks between now and the summer release date. “All of it is pretty much me,” she said of the yet-untitled album. “I love Bruno Mars; I’m obsessed with him. I love B.o.B. I love Adele’s new record; it’s insane. I would love to even just meet her.” Gomez has previously shared that “there’s a lot more depth [on this album].” She has tracks on it that fully express the wide range of emotions she feels as a young woman in the spotlight. “There is one [song] that I’m completely in love with, and it was written by Pixie Lott, who I am obsessed with,” she said. “And it’s my mom’s favorite song. It’s very sweet. It’s kind of a ballad, but not really. It’s basically about living in the moment; it’s about enjoying right now. I’m very much enjoying right now. Whether waiting for his next endearing words of encouragement or recapping his numerous outlandish and creative expletives , America is having as much fun watching Tyler as he seems to be having himself. And aside from Tyler’s newfound fans, via “Idol,” no one is more thrilled for his resurgence in popularity than his daughter Liv. When MTV News caught up with her while promoting her new film “Super” recently, we asked for her thoughts on her dad’s new gig. “I haven’t been watching every single [episode], which I feel really bad about, but I’ve been watching a lot and I love it,” Tyler revealed. “I feel really proud of him and happy for him. By Adam Graham Karen Rodriguez Photo: FOX “Love Will Lead You Back” paved a path straight to elimination for Karen Rodriguez, who was shown the door on Thursday’s (March 17) elimination episode of “American Idol.” The 21-year-old bilingual-singing New Yorker, who was praised by Steven Tyler for her “ethnic what-it-is-ness” on Wednesday’s performance episode , pleaded her case before the judges when asking them to use the season’s one save to spare her another week. “I know I can do so much better, and I know you guys believe in me,” she said, fighting back tears, after a Hail Mary rendition of Mariah Carey’s “Hero.” But it wasn’t enough: While Randy Jackson said the decision was not unanimous, the judges decided not to let Rodriguez sing another day in the competition. It was Rodriguez’s second straight trip to the bottom three, real estate she shared this week with Naima Adedapo and Haley Reinhart. Adedapo was the first to be shown mercy by host Ryan Seacrest, leaving Reinhart and Rodriguez behind to face the music. Ultimately it was Rodriguez — who performed Taylor Dayne’s 1990 hit “Love Will Lead You Back” on Wednesday’s show, while wearing a sci-fi silver miniskirt and a Snooki-like pouf atop her head — that came up on the short end of America’s votes. During the teary goodbye, Rodriguez was consoled by the three judges, as well as her fellow contestants. When they were sent to the bottom three earlier in the show, neither Reinhart nor Adedapo seemed very surprised with their fates. Reinhart, who in a winding speech explained that she ultimately sees herself combining “rock and funk and blues” into one style (note: she sang Whitney Houston’s “I’m Your Baby Tonight” this week), gave a sighing “yippee!” when Seacrest told her she might be in the bottom three. Later, she mock dusted off her chair before sitting down in the same seat she held the week prior. Adedapo, who mouthed “wonder who?” when she was told it was either her or the week-winning Stefano Langone in the bottom three, practically marched to her seat before Seacrest even read the results. Call it the curse of the ladies: So far this season, a male has yet to land in the bottom of the bunch. Thia Megia thought she was going to see the wrath of the bottom three and explained to the judges that she’s got more in her than she’s shown thus far. “If you guys put me through, I’ll do so much better,” she said. “I can show so much more.” She survived another week, but she should be held to her promise to step things up a notch beyond the bland balladry she’s shown to date. Everyone else was safe to sit back and watch the show, which squeezed in performances by the Black Eyed Peas (who dedicated their new single “Just Can’t Get Enough” to “our friends in Japan”) and “American Idol” season-nine winner Lee DeWyze, who performed the sleepy, John Mayer-like ballad “Beautiful Like You” from his album Live It Up. The show opened with a medley of Steppenwolf’s “Born to be Wild” (sang by the guys) and Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” (the girls), a cheeky homage to the week’s songs-from-your-birth-year theme. The pop superstar will receive the prize at the 2011 CFDA Fashion Awards on June 6 in New York City. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga Photo: Noel Vasquez/ Getty Images Lady Gaga is certainly known for her eye-popping, always-evolving style, and she has shown her passion for fashion at numerous high-profile events. This hasn’t gone unnoticed by the Council of Fashion Designers of America, as the trade organization announced on Wednesday night that the pop star will be among its 2011 CFDA Fashion Awards winners, the Associated Press reports . Gaga will be presented with the style icon award at this year’s ceremony, which will take place on June 6 in New York City. CFDA president Diane von Furstenberg and executive director Steven Kolb made the announcement at the DVF Studio in the Big Apple, where all the nominations were made public for the event. Also set to be recognized at the CFDA Awards is designer Marc Jacobs, will who will receive the lifetime achievement award. According to von Furstenberg, Jacobs e-mailed her noting that he didn’t think he was old enough for the honor and that he wanted it renamed the “half-lifetime award.” She explained to the fashionistas in the room, “I told him that I’m much older than him and I’m still kicking.” In addition, Jacobs garnered a nomination for the womenswear designer of the year prize, as did Alexander Wang and the design duo Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough of Proenza Schouler. The Olsen twins are also up for an award. They will be competing in the womenswear category for emerging talent for their collection The Row, going up against Prabal Gurung and Joseph Altuzarra. The International Award will go to Phoebe Philo, who designs for Celine and who gets a shout-out from Kanye West on “Dark Fantasy,” the lead cut from his My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy album. Other 2011 CFDA nominees include Wang, Phillip Lim and Robert Geller in the up-and-coming menswear designer category, and Alejandro Ingelmo, Eddie Borgo, Pamella Love and Jason Wu for accessories.
