In the clip for their first LIVING THINGS single, which debuted Thursday on MTV, the band gets intimate … with fiery results. By James Montgomery Linkin Park’s “Burn It Down” Photo: Warner Bros. Records On the upcoming LIVING THINGS album, Linkin Park veer away from the political territory they explored on Minutes to Midnight and A Thousand Suns, and instead mine decidedly personal topics — relationships crumbling, trust eroding, faith failing. In a lot of ways, it is perhaps the most aptly titled record in recent history. As proof, look no further than the first single, “BURN IT DOWN,” which is full of lines like “I played the soldier, you played the king/ Struck me down, when I kissed that ring,” none of which are about empire building or military service. Instead, the song is very much about the give/take dynamics of a relationship, and what happens when it all falls apart. And the video for the song — which premiered Thursday (May 24) on MTV — follows in the same vein: There are no sweeping shots of battlefields or wretched politicians … instead, it is a decidedly human thing: just the band, in a room, sweating their collective asses off and pouring their hearts into the music. It is a performance video pushed to the limit, and sure, there are a lot of digital effects added for good measure, but they’re used only to highlight the personal flourishes of that performance — the intimately tight close-ups, the pained attention to details — shoot, even when they burst into flames at the end, you have to at least wonder whether they didn’t just spontaneously combust … it’s that intense (and intensely personal) of a thing. So after spending the better part of five years exploring the outer boundaries of what a massively popular rock band can get away with, Linkin Park return home with “BURN IT DOWN” and LIVING THINGS (due June 26), shifting the focus eternally inward. Not only is that bound to make their diehard fans happy, but it makes for a truly interesting new chapter in this increasingly fascinating band’s career. New clip, which debuted Thursday on MTV, sets Bieber up to launch the next phase of his career. By James Montgomery Justin Bieber in his “Boyfriend” music video Photo: Island/Def Jam If you are reading this, then you are probably aware that Justin Bieber turned 18 back in March . I only mention it now because it helps explain JB’s brand-new “Boyfriend” video, which premiered Thursday night (May 3) on MTV and is pretty much an 18-year-old male’s fantasy in every conceivable way (or at least most of them). Filled with cool clothes, hot cars and even hotter women , “Boyfriend” — directed by the mysteriously named Director X (n

Trailer for ‘That’s My Boy,’ starring the ‘SNL’ duo, debuts Thursday on MTV.com. By Josh Wigler Andy Samberg and Adam Sandler in “That’s My Boy” Photo: Columbia Pictures Peanut butter and jelly, popcorn and movies, baseball and springtime — all winning combinations that never fail to put a smile on your face. On June 15, 2012, you’ll be able to add another prized combo to that list: Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg. The two “Saturday Night Live” legends are joining forces for a new Happy Madison comedy called “That’s My Boy,” hitting theaters this June. In the film, Sandler stars as a down-on-his luck man trying to reconnect with his estranged family on the week of his son’s (Samberg) wedding. It’s a bizarre setup — after all, Sandler is only 12 years older than Samberg in real life — but, as one would hope, the film offers a reliably ridiculous explanation for the small age gap. If the basic premise and the involvement of actors Sandler and Samberg don’t have you fired up for “That’s My Boy,” just wait: The first official trailer is set to drop on MTV.com on Thursday, and Samberg himself couldn’t be more excited for it. “I never thought I would actually get to be in a movie with Sandler, certainly not playing his son,” Samberg told MTV News ahead of the trailer’s release. “For me, I’ve been such a huge fan of his for so long; I used to listen to ‘Billy Madison’ on audio cassette in my Walkman. I’m a real-deal Sandler fan. I’d definitely put [this experience] up there with being cast on ‘SNL’ or any of the other things I’ve gotten to do — making [Lonely Island] records with my buddies — things I’ve always dreamed of happening but never thought they would. I’m pretty psyched.” As a self-declared “real-deal Sandler fan,” Samberg was far from disappointed when it came to watching the comedy legend do his thing on the “That’s My Boy” set. “Sandler is basically on fire in this movie,” he said. “In real life, he’s about the sweetest dad I’ve ever seen. But in the movie, he’s a bit of a train wreck. If we were making a documentary, it would be called ‘Sweet Loving Dad.’ But I think [‘That’s My Boy’] is going to be a little bit more entertaining and edgy than that.” Stay tuned to MTV News on Thursday for the “That’s My Boy” trailer premiere! Clip’s on-air debut at 7:53 p.m. ET Thursday will be followed by live ‘MTV First’ interview with Perry on MTV.com. By Kara Warner Katy Perry in her “E.T.” video Photo: Capitol The Thursday night premiere of Katy Perry’s “E.T.” video with Kanye West on MTV and MTV.com is getting closer and closer. Until then, a 60-second teaser of the futuristic, otherworldly clip should tide fans over. The sneak peek shows Perry floating and spinning somewhere in outer space, decked out in an ethereal and dazzling-white ensemble. She looks like an angelic alien princess, complete with brightly colored makeup and cat-eye contact lenses. The footage of Perry singing is cut with what looks like footage from “Animal Planet” or National Geographic, showing big cats hunting game. The remaining 30 seconds show Perry exploring the desolate terrain in an unknown land. She is wearing another highly complex and stylized outfit, a long silky train billowing in the wind. This time, she looks part femme fatale, part warrior goddess, with a little Lara Croft from “Tomb Raider” thrown in. Perry approaches what looks like a broken robot, wiping dust from its eyes. She is then shown reaching down to place her hand over the device’s heart, which lights up at her touch. At this point it’s safe to say that this is Perry’s most complex, stylized and out-there video production yet. The new clip premieres online at noon Thursday on MTV.com, VH1.com and LogoTV.com. Then, “MTV First: Katy Perry’s ‘E.T.’ ” will bow on air at 7:53 p.m. ET before tossing to an MTV.com live stream, featuring MTV News correspondent Sway’s exclusive chat with Perry, an interview with director Floria Sigismondi and reaction from Perry’s fans. ‘I grew up watching Britney Spears,’ pop newcomer tells MTV News about landing a feature on ‘(Drop Dead) Beautiful.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Audrey Kim Sabi Photo: MTV News There are three collaborations on Britney Spears’ brand-new Femme Fatale. Black Eyed Peas leading man will.i.am produced and appears on “Big Fat Bass,” Travis Barker lends his drumming skills to the bonus track “Don’t Keep Me Waiting,” and the club track “(Drop Dead) Beautiful” features a newcomer: singer/rapper Sabi. MTV News caught up with Sabi a few weeks before Britney’s album dropped on Tuesday and, at the time, the pop newbie was still pretty floored about her appearance on the album, which is the focus of “Britney Spears: I Am the Femme Fatale,” a special airing Sunday at 9 p.m. ET. on MTV. “The way I understand is that Britney Spears is constantly looking for [new stuff and] had an ear out for new talent and fresh music,” she explained. “Somehow, she stumbled upon me in my old group days. I was in a group called the Bangz. “And it’s just pretty crazy, I mean, I grew up watching Britney Spears,” she added. “All my friends watched Britney Spears and we even had a routine to ‘Hit Me Baby One More Time’ that we were gonna perform, like, for a middle-school talent show. So it’s a dream come true. Never did I ever think that I’d be in the mix with Britney. I’m just lucky.” In fact, the opportunity to work with the pop star was so surreal that Sabi refused to believe her luck until the ink was dry. “I was like, ‘Absolutely not,’ ” she joked about her initial response to the collaboration offer. “Duh! I was like, ‘Yeah!’ I don’t know, it was crazy. I was like, ‘This is surreal.’ I’m the kind of person that’s like, once I hear good news, until it’s solidified and I see the actual proof it’s a done deal, I [don’t] get excited. I was like, ‘This is great, but so many things can happen in between the time I’m supposed to record it.’ But when it was solidified, I was like, ‘Wow, this is crazy.’ It’s dope.” What do you think of Britney’s collabo with Sabi?
